According to the Telegraph Newspaper last year, six out of seven people inBritain pray! People that refuse to pray or don’t believe in prayer are in theminority. In fact the report went on to say that young people in their teens andtwenties are more likely to pray than their parents generation.

And, although prayer is apparently seen as a natural concept, manypeople including Christians, don’t know HOW to pray.

Jesus spoke to his friends, the disciples, and gave them an outline of how to prayin the Bible that is famously known as “The Lords Prayer”, which I learned torecite, not in church but in my cub scout pack as an 8 year old boy. We said itevery week right at the end of all the other activities, it was the final piece of theevening, but after three years of reciting it I still wasn’t sure what it meant toforgive our trespassers. The way I simply saw it was that I didn’t own any land foranyone to trespass on!

But Jesus started his instruction with the words “When you pray…”, not if youpray, but simply when. He was expressing the concept that prayer should be anormal part of everyday life.

So why is it that we often pray only when things gowrong in our lives, or we pray, like a child on ChristmasEve, when we want something? Prayer is so much morethan that – it is a conversation with God himself. Thisautumn, in New Life Church we will be lookingat how to pray, whether you are in themajority or not, everyone is welcome.

Chrissie’s StoryOver the last 2 years I have had a lot of very difficult ‘stuff’

going on in my life as well as having to deal with manyhealth issues. I thought by the beginning of this year I had atlast come to the end of it all, but no, ‘stuff’ has a habit ofcreeping back when you least expect it!

In February of this year I received a notice from my landladystating that she wanted me to move out of her house I had

been renting for the last 4 years. You can imagine my reaction, what have I done, why, panic, despair, what am I going to do and more importantly where am I going to go!

I was given 2 months to find somewhere else to live. Suddenly my whole world wasturned upside down. I was already dealing with a lot of anger from all the ‘stuff’ now Iwas given more to cope with. What was going on, why did God keep letting thesethings to go on in my life, surely now at my age I was entitled to be able to have a quietand peaceful life.

Yet over my life so far that peace was snatched away so many times I began to feellike a yo yo. And although I was strong, got through it and dealt with it all, when was Iever going to be at peace not only with life but also within me.

When I heard about the “Freedom in Christ” Course, I felt that I had to do somethingto try and help me get rid of the anger. Over the first few weeks I listened and watchedthe DVD and it made me think about how things affected me, how my emotions got inthe way of me dealing with things in the right way for me.

But I still felt the anger I still felt ‘why me’ I still felt ‘it's not fair’ and I thought is it worthme carrying on, but I knew that I had to keep going, and I am so very glad that I did. Bythe end of the course I understood a lot more of not only myself but also of life, humannature and relationships. But above all I finally knew beyond a doubt that my FatherGod was always there, that God hadn't abandoned me, that He wasn't to blame, it wasjust life getting in the way.

And as it says in the Footsteps poem, when I thought I couldn't go on He carried meand strengthened me enough for me to go on and get through. I know that He hasplans for my life and through all these things the ‘stuff’ is for a purpose, because Heknows that if we go through these things it make us a better person able to makebetter choices in the way we deal with things and gives us experience with which wecan help others.

As it says in Romans 5:3 5 ‘but we rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that, suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hopedoes not disappoint us, because God has poured our His love into our hearts by the HolySpirit, whom He has given us’.

So that last day I came away from the course, I was smiling properly for the first timein a long while! I felt good, I knew I had my peace back and above all I felt free!

God Bless

Chrissie x
