His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej

Over long decades, King Bhumibol has truly fulfilled his oath by tirelessly devoting himself to projects aimed at bringing benefit and immediate relief to his people, particularly the poorest and most vulnerable. The plight of the farmers in the country’s arid northeastern plateau, who depend on regular rainfall to harvest their rice crops, has drawn his special

attention. The King applied his scientific expertise to invent a rainmaking technique called “The Sandwich.” It involves using two planes to bracket warm and cold clouds at different altitudes and seed them with chemicals, causing vapour droplets to form and fall towards the earth. This technique was first patented three decades ago.

As the need arose for greater precision in rainmaking, and also for the rain to fall over a wider area of the parched paddies, King Bhumibol developed the “Super Sandwich” technique. In 2002 he was granted a patent for the “Super Sandwich”, making it his fourth patent. He is believed to be the only member of a royal house to hold patents for his inventions. The official name of the patent, which was registered in the European Union, is “Weather Modification by Royal Rainmaking Technology.”

In a song dedicated to His Majesty, musician, Sri Chinmoy writes:

“King Bhumibol, Bhumibol! You are your life’s supreme compassion-role. O clarity-mind, charity-heart, majesty-soul, In your Kingdom, children’s nectar-goal.”

King Bhumibol Adulyadej is undoubtedly a supreme leader in our world today.

THE NIVA GRYPHON

The Eagle’s Eye: the honor of truth and determination; a penetrating stare that won’t allow you to hide and balk from the challenges set forth in your life.

The Lion’s Strength: the vitality of virtues and character; an athletic and confident prowl that creates possibility and defines style in expression.

We push for excellence, and this year is no exception. Everywhere we made strides in getting NIVA to be a better school; from our teachers to our studies, to our facilities, to our students - we set our goals and standards to be worthy of our effort and time.

Therefore I am proud of our school and to be a part of a community that works together on accomplishing such admirable goals that are not easy to reach: getting a population of non-native English speakers on level with native speakers, changing teen-aged children into responsible men and women, learning how to be humble enough to acknowledge that we are all learning - all of the time, not just trying to exist but excelling in life!

Although achieving excellence is a formidable task, it is not the end result that matters - but the attitude one shows in trying. The honor of meeting a challenge and the vitality that comes forth in expressing this effort.

The Gryphon’s Talon: what we use to hold onto, grasp and carry with us; our yearbook - a small but insightful year in review of such honor and vitality.

Remember to remember,

Jonathan D. JustHead of School

AUGUSTTWINS DAY

Twins Day is one of first new activities that this year’s Leadership class has organized. It was held on August 30,

2013, and was one of the many “Spirit Days” of the school year. Twins Day was a day where the students and teachers chose partners and dressed up in similar clothing to look like twins. The goal of this activity was to engage the students in expressing school spirit and to have fun while doing so. At first, the students were not too positive about the activity and didn’t think they would participate. However, when Friday came, many of the students dressed up as twins, and some even came as triplets. It was an enjoyable and interesting day. It showed us that the students had “school spirit.” Some of the best-dressed classes were from the first to fourth grade. They were wearing identical outfits and looking at them made us feel like we were seeing double.

SEPTEMBERSENIORS’ BONDING CAMP

Our 2013 senior bonding camp was held from September 1 to September 3. The purpose of the camp was to allow

each member in the Leadership class to contribute, participate, communicate, lead, and work as a team in as many activities as possible. At the same time, it helped to bring us together despite our differences. We went to Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy in Nakhon Nayok. It is a military training institution that provides camp sites and activities for campers to use and participate in. For our first activity, the soldiers taught us a chant known as “The Awaken Power Chant”. We sang along as we

moved from station to station. The next day, we went on an eight kilometer hike through the forest. As we did not expect to be trained so hard during the hike, we were all shocked when a soldier commanded us to drop down and crawl on the muddy ground. Hours flew by while we were in the forest, and we were amazed to see that everyone had stopped caring about their appearances due to their fear of being punished by the soldiers. Instead, we focused on getting through the hike, chanting together, finishing all the stations, and returned back to our rooms safely. We were worn out, but proud of ourselves. From that five hour hike, we gained

much more than just a memorable experience. It taught us to care about our friends, to plan and work as a team, and to be independent. During the evening, we had productive meetings and discussions about our plans for the school year. We also played a few games and had a few performances in order to release stress from the meetings. Altogether, the camp was exhausting, but worth the experience. It was different from what we normally do in high school camps. It made us feel more like a team, taught us to work together, and gave us the feeling that we could go through anything together. by: Sithu, Jess, & Truc

SEPTEMBERWAI KRU TEACHERS’ DAY

Teachers’ Day is very important because it is a great opportunity for us, as students to show respect and honor our teachers. They didn’t only educate us about

academic subjects, but they also imparted knowledge on how to survive in society. This also shows our Thai culture of being humble and respectful to our beloved teachers, who have the role of being parents outside our home. NIVA celebrates Teachers’ Day or “Wai Kru” every year to show appreciation for their hard work and sacrifices. This also reminds us in the future that teachers are part of the success we achieve in life.

The senior class did a great job in showing their love and care to the teachers by singing a tribute song to all teachers. Without teachers being here for us today, we might be walking on the wrong path in the future. Being a teacher is not an easy career, as they need to be strong, generous, and understanding of their students whenever things go wrong. With their hard work, Teachers’ Day ceremony is a very significant time for us to repay the kindness they’ve given to us from their hearts.

SEPTEMBERHERITAGE WEEK

Heritage Week 2013 was held from 23 to 27 September. During this whole week, teachers taught students through the

perspective of their assigned countries, and each classroom was decorated to represent assigned countries. On Friday the 27th, judges visited each room to determine which classroom was the best at representing their country. Winners from elementary school, middle school, and high school levels were announced at an assembly the week later. In addition to learning a lot about each homeroom’s

country, everyone also got the chance to visit other classes to learn about other countries by sampling their native food, music, language, and more. The purpose of Heritage Week is to enable everyone to know more about different cultures and languages throughout the world. Heritage week also helps students work together as a class and build teamwork skills. It is a fascinating and fun experience for students to visit and learn through the different perspectives of various countries.

OCTOBERHALLOWEEN CELEBRATION

Trick or treat! It’s October 31st and echoes of the famous Halloween phrase could be heard through the hallways as kids from kindergarten to elementary school visited each class, hoping to get candy. Everywhere you turned, you’d see students and teachers in various get-ups like zombies, vampires or even a magician! Although classes continued as a normal day for high school and middle school students (aww man!), it was still very eventful.

A competition was held by the Leadership

Class during the secondary school lunch time as representatives from each class presented their most creative or most scary looking costume by walking down the catwalk to be evaluated by the judges. A horror movie was also showed during the last period, while the elementary students had enjoyable activities outdoors in the grass area, arranged by the NPSC. Overall, this was a very successful Halloween celebration and promises that next year will be even more…horrifying!!

NOVEMBERSENIOR PRESENTATION

On November 25, 2013 the senior class invited students from grades 6 to 11, teachers, and parents to watch the Senior Presentation. It has been a long standing tradition of NIVA seniors to express themselves to the

school with a medium of their choice, whether it was through videos or performances. While the SG Induction ceremony’s purpose was to introduce this year’s senior class, the Senior Presentation’s purpose was to show a deeper understanding of who the seniors really are. After watching the senior presentations of previous years, the senior class of 2014 had decided to do something different, something that would stand out from the crowd. Our simple but holistic video first started out by showing interviews of the seniors, each giving some personal information and showing a fun side of them. The scene changed to showing the seniors being splashed with two or more colors, using the spontaneous mix of colors as a way to define themselves. After establishing how the seniors are like now, a compilation of videos from old projects done in the earlier years was shown to convey the changes they have gone through over time. As the video came to an end, the senior class performed three short dances, which showed the hidden sides of some of the more shy seniors. Mr. David, the homeroom teacher and the Leadership class’s supervisor, gave the closing words to the program.

The main goal of the Senior Presentation was to let the students know the seniors for who they really are. “Interaction between students from lower grades and the seniors is not frequent, and our thoughts on the people around us are only limited to the things we see them doing as we pass them on the hallways.” The overall feedback from the audience was positive, and the video was widely received. It is with great hope that this presentation will manage to bring the seniors and the other students closer than ever.

ACTIVITIESSTUDENTS TAKE ITBS TEST

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), also known as the Iowa Tests, are standardized tests provided as a service to schools by the College of Education of the University of Iowa. The tests are administered to students in kindergarten through eleventh grade as part of the Iowa Statewide Testing Programs, a division of the Iowa Testing Programs (ITP). Over decades, participation expanded and currently nearly all school districts in Iowa participate annually in the program, as do many other school districts across the United States. In a cooperative relationship, participating schools receive ITBS test materials, scoring and reporting services and consultation in the use of ITBS for instructional purposes, and ITP utilizes participation by schools in research and test development. This standard has also reached Thailand and many schools including NIVA uses this test to help student become internationally cometitive.

FEBRUARYMIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP

The middle school students of NIVA International School went to camp at Greenery Resort, Khao Yai on February 9-11, 2014. If I was to describe the camp in one word, that word would be “fun.” With all the help from our teachers, the camp was so much fun and was very nice and memorable. With so many activities planned for us, we had no idea of how much fun it was going to be. We enjoyed

swimming in the big swimming pool, ate delicious food, and did various activities that were organized by our teachers and resort staff. I was impressed with the people running the resort because they were very kind and also provided extra snacks to the students. The middle school students felt like they were royalty.

All of the team building activities that the

140

Who knew that with duct tape, sticks, and straws, we could throw an egg farther, and it wouldn’t crack. That was totally amazing! I also remember the hygiene presentation as it presented some new information we never knew before. The teachers were experts in giving us good advice in taking care of our bodies. The camp gave us the opportunity to get closer with our peers and our teachers. We had fun exchanging jokes and sharing

funny stories with each other. The final part of the camp was a blast and was the highlight of our trip. Paintball and ATV’s were the popular choices of the students. Our teachers were there to supervise and they made sure that we were safe while having fun. Everyone enjoyed the activities and nobody was hurt. All in all, we came back home with smiles on our faces.

May 10 was the long awaited 2014 High School Prom Night. Every year, the junior class organizes the Prom with the goal of creating the best and most memorable night for the seniors. The theme of this year’s Prom was “Garden” and it was the perfect opportunity for the students and teachers to dress up in their most elegant dresses and most dashing suits. It was also a great chance for students and former students to socialize in a setting outside of school.

The Prom program comprised of many activities including various performances from the Grade 11 class, a video presentation for the seniors, games, and dancing. Various types of food including Western, Japanese, and Thai food were served at dinner. In addition, a vote was held to award the title of Prom King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Adam, and Eve to the six loveliest and most handsome students that night. Overall, the Prom night was a truly delightful and splendid experience for everyone attending.

Recently, the situation surrounding international logistics has been changing dramatically. Instead of considering freight forwarding, warehousing and other distribution functions individually, customers tend to adopt a comprehensive logistics strategy that seeks to optimize the distribution process as a whole. Logistics companies are now being called on to provide "one-stop service" that offers all the distribution functions in one package.

In response to these conditions, the Yusen Air & Sea Service Group and the NYK Logistics Group have integrated their operations throughout the world, and are making a new start in Japan as Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd., in October 2010, which marks 55 years since the Company's establishment.

“SUNNY” brand emergency light have been available in the local Thai market for the past 35 years, starting from a small business named Ngow Ha Limited Partnership located at 1048 Nakorn Chaisri, Dusit, Bangkok. At that time, “SUNNY” emergency light imported only 3-4 models for a local distribution in a limited area.

Later, Ngow Ha Ltd. Part. started to spread the SUNNY brand through the market. The company again changed its name to Sunny Engineering Co.,Ltd. to be in line with the company’s products and to expand its customer base. At that time the company was vey successful in importing the emergency light to Thai market. For this reason, the company began to manufacture its own products and changed its company name to be Sunny Engineering (1998) Co.,Ltd. Beside all those of the SUNNY brand were passed inspection for manufacturing standards from the office of Industrial manufacturing standards, Ministry, number 1102-2538 on July 24, 1995. Also, it was the first brand in Thailand to receive the certificate number 1955-2542. Until today, we develop the products into the standard and receive the certificate number 1955-2551.

Nowadays, the company plans to expand the market to the foreign market. As a result, we used the IsOn Import-Export Co.,Ltd. for selling the products in Thailand and to the other countries. We also received the trade mark to sell the products to around the world by using the company’s name to be “IsOn Import-Export Co.,Ltd.”

THE FRONT COVERTHE TALON is a symbol of strength; to hold, to carry, and to persevere. The cover artwork has been created by Dollada Kasarn (Nadia), Grade 6.

This school year has been very colorful and full of life. The activities known as “Spirit Days” made life at NIVA memorable. This yearbook captures those moments to be re-lived over and over again. The yearbook staff hopes that you enjoy flipping through the book and reminiscing the times at NIVA.
