Milepost One

As I reflect upon this Yearbook, it is extremely rewarding to be reminded of the range of ex-periences that we offer to our students. The creative arts play an important part in our school curriculum and while we all understand the drive for academic excellence, we also ensure that our children receive a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to always give a holis-tic, child-centred approach to education where children have the opportunity to excel in a wide range of areas. International Mindedness is also a key area that we endeavour to devel-op at Panaga. We understand the need for a national identity, however, we also encourage the development of an open, respectful and enquiring approach to other cultures. The intro-duction of Bahasa Melayu lessons is an example of developing an interest in and respect for our host country, Brunei. As you look through this Yearbook, I am sure you will view several examples of creativity, internationalism and of course, academic excellence.

This year has been monumental in many ways. The building expansion that is nearing completion is probably the biggest change in the long his-tory of the school. As we complete the new buildings, we will take great delight in fully utilising the new educational facilities that will further support the children's learning. Clearly, the physical environment helps the education process, but the key features of any school are the teach-ers and support staff. In my short time in the school, we have dramatically increased the teacher numbers to support our children in their learn-ing. Next September, we will have close to seventy teachers in the school and over fifty learning support assistants. Along with the new expan-sion, we feel the addition of extra staff will further enhance learning experiences for our children.

All of this success would be difficult to achieve without the support of our many stakeholders. I would like to acknowledge the support that we receive from the School Board, the PTA (who have kindly half-funded this Yearbook) and BSP; plus our supportive parents and community.

A special thanks this year to everyone who has worked tirelessly on the school expansion.

At the core of all we do are our vey special students who come from numerous parts of the globe. Children at our school integrate quickly and soon become part of the Panaga family, due to our team of dedicated teaching and support staff who harness the children’s enthusiasm.

As you look through this Yearbook now and in years to come, I hope it evokes many positive memories of the authentic and rewarding learning experiences that your children have been exposed to and which will remain with you for a lifetime wherever you may be.

We COMMUNICATED what we had learned in our class assembly about Holidays.

We showed the right VALUES when listening to each others’ ideas.

We used our ADAPTABILITY to try things a different way, if what we had

in mind didn’t work.

We demonstrated that we could be

THOUGHTFUL and supportive of our friends when

working together on a task.

We showed

RESILIENCE by working on the problem until it was completed.

We did a fair bit of EN-

QUIRY when a mystery pot

of magic green

porridge was given to us by an old lady.

In role-play, we showed RESPECT for

each others’

choices and ideas.

We demonstrated COOPERATION in group work.

Milepost One Challenge Day Three: Milepost 1 Sports Day

Milepost 1 Sports Day After a delayed start due to the smoke haze, our Rampayoh students showed great determination during our Milepost 1 Sports Day. The students of P2 and P3 had practised hard during PE lessons to hone their skills in basketball push, football dribble, sack race, bucket-ball, standing long jump, running relay, ob-stacle course, javelin and penalty shoot-out.

With the later start, the conditions proved tough as the sun’s

rays grew hotter but the children of Rampayoh showed tremen-

dous resilience in earning as many points as possible for their

house.

After 9 grueling events and 3 water stops, the

final scores were close but there was no

denying Red House as they won the House

Trophy by a slender margin of 12 points.

IP8R … Personal Goals in Action...

Cooperating together

with other budding scien-

tists whilst experimenting

with jelly.

Designing and carrying out the

perfect survey using our excel-

lent communication skills.

Trying to beat the land speed

record by designing the fastest

car can be challenging. We

needed to adapt our plans and

be resilient!

Using our enquiry

skills to find out how

people in the past

communicated their

news and presenting

it in a creative way.

Respecting the differ-

ent ways in which we

see the world and rep-

resenting this through

art.

Thoughtfully listening to

the ideas of others and

making messy craters at the

same time!

Showing our values when

choosing what news to re-

port and how to report it.

Ahmad and Jean-Paul are communicating during their

visit to RTB. Burhan, Fathi, Paulina, Thomas and Daniel

are sharing their skills with the rest of P8. They may have

had to be adaptable in their approach to make sure that

we respect what they can do and what they know! Riley

and Simin are cooperating to present their understanding

of Shakespeare. Masin is conducting an enquiry into sign

language, Mark is finding out more about space. Ananya

is thoughtful about political movements and Rifqi is

thoughtful about his piece of art. Mohamed is resilient -

like all of IP8 - we keep trying! Laura and Sundus are smil-

ing - they know that all of our values make our school a

great place to learn!

Milepost One P8 Concert

The Engineer of Panaga was

our interpretation of Merchant of

Venice. Our enquiry into Shake-

speare’s times showed that 16th

Century Venice was similar to

Panaga today - people from dif-

ferent communities came togeth-

er to trade, just as people from

around the world come together

in Panaga today to produce oil.

This play required all of our speaking and listening skills.

Communicating the story to our audience was our top priority.

We cooperated ef-

fectively with each

other, respecting the

contributions that

everyone made.

Everyone needed to be resilient whilst practising as we all made mistakes. We learnt from every rehearsal and were al-

ways adaptable - aiming to make the performance better.

Studying the original play and producing our

own version has made us think about our val-

ues of how we need to do the right thing

all of the time - treating everyone with respect

- regardless of our differences. We think we

are now more thoughtful in our approach to

our community as a result.

Milepost One Community

We have been blessed this year to be able to further our ties and friendships with many schools in our community. We are proud to

live in Brunei and are grateful for the gifts this country gives us. Thank you to all children and teachers across the country who have hosted us or been guests of ours. Let’s continue our ‘open house’ approach to learning and fun for many more years to come!

I’ve had a fantastic 3 years in

Brunei and have fulfilled my

childhood dream of living on

mystical Borneo. Thank you to

the truly wonderful children

and supportive staff and par-

ents for making my job so en-

joyable. I will miss the window

-shaking thunderstorms, the

short commute to work and

the never-ending greenery.

Naomi

It has been a pleasure to work and live in Bru-nei for the past six years. We will truly miss the children, teachers, learning support assis-tants, support staff and the parents. We would like to thank you all for your support, coopera-tion and involvement during all these years. Meino, Clara, Jill & Kaj

I will miss Brunei very

much; the warm days,

the beach, the wildlife

and the welcoming peo-

ple. It's been a real

pleasure to work with

the children of Panaga

and I wish them all the

best for the future.

Vanessa

Living in Brunei has been an eye opening experi-ence for me. I have learnt many lessons and will take these with me when I return home to Australia. I would like to thank all of the wonder-ful children and families I have worked with.

Brunei has been a won-

derful experience for

both me and my fami-

ly. Browsing through my

photos shows how many

memories we've made

that will stay with us. We

have enjoyed living as a

part of the Panaga com-

munity and I have really

enjoyed working with

great colleagues and chil-

dren. Dave

It has been a priv-ilege to get to know so many children and par-ents. Brunei is in-deed a very spe-cial place. I leave here with only happy memories that I will carry in my heart forever. Hettie

My family and I

have enjoyed six

wonderful years at

Panaga School. I've

really been lucky to

work with so many

great kids and

teachers from so

many different

countries. Simon

Living in Brunei has provided me with a great opportunity to travel in Asia. I have al-so enjoyed my time here participating in many sports and physi-cal activities. After time in Russia and now Brunei, I am look-ing forward to living in Australia again and be-ing closer to my family.

Tim

Unfortunately, after only one year, it's time for us to leave Brunei already. New pastures lie ahead in New Zea-land, where we hope to settle. I've really en-joyed teaching my fan-tastic group of children in P3 and would like to thank everyone who helped us make our time in Brunei a very memorable one.
