Dear Reader, New Year Greetings from AYJNISHD (D)! It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all, that I have taken up the charge as Director, AYJNISH (D) from 23 rd January 2019 onwards to lead the institute, its regional centres and CRCs in line with its vision and mission. Over these years since inception, the Institute has been the nerve centre, in the country for uplifting the lives of individuals with speech & hearing disabilities by way of clinical services, human resource development, outreach extension service, research and development activities to name a few. It’s my endeavour to lead the institute, channelizing the efforts of its staff and students in a more focussed manner in further enhancing and improving the services towards the speech and hearing impaired population of our country. ‘NINAD’, the Newsletter of AYJNISHD (D) is a reflection of the activities undertaken by the Institute in every quarter. I am very proud to present you the Volume 4 of ‘NINAD’ for the October-December Quarter of 2018. New Year Greetings from AYJNISHD (D)!

It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all, thatI have taken up the charge as Director, AYJNISH (D)from 23rd January 2019 onwards to lead the institute,its regional centres and CRCs in line with its vision andmission. INTERNATIONAL DAY OFPERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.

On 3rd December 2018, theInternational Day of Persons withDisabilities – IDPD was observedby AYJNISHD(D) at the Institute andits Regional Centres andComposite Rehabilitation Centresthrough various programs andactivities.

In order to create awareness to thepublic and to provide answers totheir questions a program was airdon ‘Vividh Bharati-Mumbai’. Thesame was broadcast by All IndiaRadio (AIR) at 4pm on 24thSeptember 2018. Dr. Gayatri Ahuja,Lecturer (Special Education)addressed the audience andanswered several questions onhearing impairment, casue,screening and significance of earlyidentification, ADIP scheme ofGovt. of India.

The program was also laterbroadcast on 3rd December 2018.

Since 1992, the United NationsInternational Day of Persons withDisabilities (IDPD) has been annuallyobserved on 3rd December aroundthe world. The theme for this year’sIDPD was “Empowering persons withdisabilities and ensuringinclusiveness and equality”. Thistheme focuses on the empoweringpersons with disabilities for theinclusive, equitable and sustainabledevelopment envisaged in the 2030Agenda for SustainableDevelopment.

The 2030 agenda, pledging to ‘leaveno one behind’, is an ambitious planof action of the internationalcommunity towards a peaceful andprosperous world, where dignity of anindividual person and equality amongall is applied as the fundamentalprinciple, cutting across the threepillars of the work of the UnitedNations: Development, Human Rightsand Peace and Security. It is criticalto ensure, in this regard, the full andequal participation of persons withdisabilities in all spheres of societyand create enabling environments by,

for and with persons withdisabilities.The 2030 Agenda placesgreat importance on issues related tosustainable urbanization, particularly inGoal 11: make cities and humansettlements inclusive, safe, resilient andsustainable. There can be nosustainable development withoutsustainable urban development. TheUN Conference on Housing andSustainable Urban Development(Habitat III), held in Quito, Ecuador in2016, recognized the importance ofadopting a smart-city approach thatmakes use of opportunities fromdigitalization, clean energy andtechnologies, as well as innovativetransport technologies, thus providingoptions for inhabitants to make moreenvironmentally friendly choices andboost sustainable economic growthand enabling cities to improve theirservice delivery.This year, the Secretary-General of theUnited Nations launched a first-everflagship report on disability anddevelopment UN Flagship Report onDisability and Development | 2018 –Realizing the SDGs by, for and withpersons with disabilities, The Reportprovides an evidence base fordisability-inclusive policy-making,implementation and monitoring andevaluation of an inclusive, accessibleand sustainable global developmentagenda.

SECRETARY, MSJ&E MEETSSTAFF OF SECUNDERABADREGIONAL CENTREMrs. Shakuntala Devi Gamlin, TheHonourable Secretary of Ministry ofSocial Justice and Empowermenthad visited Secunderabad on 22ndDecember 2018 in connection withRegional Conference on DDRscheme and its implementationDuring her visit to NIEPID, she alsomet the staff of SecunderabadRegional Centre of AYJNISHD(D).

VIGILANCE AWARENESS WEEKOBSERVEDIn pursuance of the order of MSJ&E,Government of India VigilanceAwareness Week-2018 was observedin Ali Yavar Jung National Institute ofSpeech and Hearing Disabilities (D) atMumbai and its Regional Centres andComposite Regional Centres from29th October to 3rd November2018.The objectives of vigilanceawareness week was to bring aboutsocial awareness amongst the Staff,and Students about the need to be self-accountable to the society, the nationand to bring about awareness on rightsand duties of the individual in curbingcorruption. A number of activities wereorganized at Head Office and itsRegional Centres, starting from pledgetaking ceremony, Elocution onEradication of Corruption, Essay writingand Poster making competitionetc.The majority of the staff alsoundertook E-Pledge through online onwww.pledge.cvc.nic.in through theCVC portal. Accordingly staffmembers who have taken the e-pledge and submitted their certificatesissued by the CVC office portal.

REGIONAL SECUNDERABADRENEWS ITS UNIVERSITYAFFLIATIONSA team from Osmania Universityinspected the facilities at RegionalCentre (RC) of Secunderabad ofAYJNISHD(D) on 28th November2018.

On satisfactory reports from theinspection team the SecunderabadRC renewed its affliation to OsmaniaUniversity, for its undergraduate andgraduate level couses in the field ofAudiology and Speech LanguagePathology. The courses affliated to

Osmania University are BASLP, MSc(Audiology), B.Ed.Spl.Edn(HI) andM.Ed.Spl.Edn(HI).

STATE COMMISSIONER PwDsVISITS REGIONAL CENTREDr.Sivaji Kumar, State Commissioner(PWDs) Patna, Bihar State, visited theRegional Centre (RC) ofSecunderabad of AYJNISHD(D) on14th December 2018.

He was on an official visit toTelangana State to study the detailsof functional strategy adopted by theState on various schemes/plansimplemented for empowerment ofPersons with Disabilities. During hisvisit to the RC he interacted with thetechnical staff and expressed hisimpression about the activities as aregional centre of AYJNISHD(D)playiing a vital role in the region interms of early identification,intervention and rehabilitation ofspeech and hearing impaired.

SECUNDERABD RC CONDUCTSRURAL CAMPS

Implementing the ADIP scheme ofGovernment of India, digital BTEhearing aid distributed to the needy

persons during camps conducted atParchuru and Nellore in AndhraPradesh State. The camp wasorganized in collaboration with SNRADeaf school located at Parchurumandal, Prakasham district on 19November 2018 and DEIC Nellore on20 November 2018 respectively.Camp at SNRA Deaf school wasinaugurated by MRO Shri SrinivasRao , MDO Smt. B Pramila Devi.Camp at DEIC centre, wasinaugurated by Shri. Srinivasa RaoSuperintendent of District Hopital,Nellore.

A total of 50 and 96 clients wereregistered for the camp at Parchuruand DIEC Nellore respectively. All thebeneficiaries of hearing aids wereprovided with diagnostic facilities interms of pure tone audiometry andhearing aid trial during the camp andwere fitted with 98 and 192hearing aidrespectively.

AYJNISHD(D) REACHES OUT FORACCESSIBLE ELECTIONS

As per the directions of the ElectionCommission of India, AYJNISHD(D)at Mumbai and its SecunderabadRegional Centre reached out itsinputs in making the election inaccessible manner. In the processDr. P.J.Mathew Martin, ESA (MassMedia) of OESD, AYJINISHD(D),provided orientation to the officialsin the office of the Chief ElectoralOffice of Maharashtra, making themfamiliar with frequently used phrasesand questions by the deaf personsin sign language on 27th Sept, 2018at 11am to 2pm in the office of theChief Electoral Officer in Mantralaya.

During the orientation session Dr.P.J.Mathew Martin, provided theofficers of CEO in Manthralya, thesignificance to interact with the Deafusing Indian Sign Language andenable the accessibility to electionprocess. There were 39 officers whotook part in the orientation programheld in collaboration withCollaboration with Chief ElectionCommissioner Office at Mantralayaon 27th September 2019.

Ms.C.G.Chitra interpreter fromSecunderabd Regional Centre wasdeputed to conduct a orientationsession for Election Officials of allDistricts on basics of Indian signlanguage on 6th October 2018 atOffice of the Chief electoral Officer,Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,Hyderabad. She also providedorientation to persons with hearingdisabilities regarding the procedurefor voting on 8th Oct. 2018 t incollaboration with Welfare of Disabled& Senior Citizen Department, Govt. ofTelangana. The orientation programsaimed at providing the participantsbasic knowledge about Indian SignLanguage and the information aboutDeaf culture while interacting withthem. The participants expressedtheir eagerness to learn ISL throughshort term training programs.
