Here there is a water ski school, water polo facilities, all the water sports and for the night thereis Club 'Kalypso' next to the sea among the pine trees.

The attractive town is popular with tourists and Athenians alike.

The old harbour and environs with many grand old houses is a wonderful place to wander around. The local yards build the Spetses caique which is considered to be among the best in Greece.

John Fowles´ novel "The Magus" is set on the island.

S P E T S E S

Spetses Island is a beautiful green area with many pine trees, wonderful beaches, picturesque small bays, crystal-clear waters, neoclassical architecture and cosmopolitan life.

The narrow stone-paved streets of the town lead to beautiful churches, lovely chapels and magnificent spots from where the view over the island and the sea is astonishing.

In September a small caique rigged out as an old trader is set on fire to commemorate the revolt against the Turks. This is accompanied by a noisy fireworks display and much merriment.

Near the town you can plunge in the waters of Agia Marina, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Mammas, Kounoupitsa and Scholes, while the beaches of Xilokeriza, Vrellos, Ligoneri and Agii Anargyri are located a bit further.

Monemvassia, the Byzantine and Venetian jewel of the eastern coast of the Peloponnese. The fortress-state of Monemvassia, with the forty churches, with the arches under which the cobbled streets intersect, throbs with life.

One of the most beautiful and attractive regions in Lakonia and Peloponese. The rock of Monemvasia stands 95 km southeastwards of Sparta and attracts thousands of visitors all year round.A low bridge connects the rock with the coast.

MONEMVASIA

The famous castle-town was founded during the Byzantine period and was one of the most important castles in Peloponese. The stone-built houses, the old manor houses, the Byzantine churches and the strong fortifications cause awe and admiration to every visitor.Monemvasia is consisted of two settlements: Epano Poli, which is built at the top of the rock, and Kato Poli, built at the southeast part of the hill. These two settlements were inside the castle walls and communicated through a staircase. The only monument saved in Epano Poli is the church of Saint Sophia. Kato Poli has tall stone built houses, narrow cobblestone paths and churches that take visitors back to past times.

This sole entry gave the city its name. The infixes “Moni” and “Emvasis” show that Monemvasia is accessible only through an entrance (the narrow strip of land which connects the rock with the east shore of Lakonia).

Many old houses operate now as traditional guesthouses. Staying at of them can be an unforgettable experience to all visitors as the atmosphere is really romantic.Behind the heavy door of the entrance and the walls of the fortress, the visitor will find a town that is full of life, with coffee-houses, bars, restaurants andboarding-houses, a town which will give him the chance to see its medieval daily routine through today. The new

Hydra has been maned after the Island's plentyfull waters, which gushed from the founts that existed in the ancient times. Historians mention the island by the name Hydrea.

In the interior of the Island have been found traces of ancient living quarters, according to archaeological excavations that took place in the location of "Episkopi". The first residents of the island where called Dryopes.

In 1821 it was the first island to pledge its sizable fleet to the Greek cause. It has been said that but for the Hydriot fleet and sailors, the War of Independence against the Turks would not have been won.

The Starfish StoryThere was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old man.As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea.The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water. He asked, "Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time."The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun."But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!" exclaimed the young man. "How can you make any difference?"The old man looked at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety of the sea. He said,"It makes a difference to this one!".

The Sea

I am the beautiful sea, the provider for many. You may know me but only for what is in me.For the beauty I hold, it is I who choosesto make me beautiful. But only for those who deserve it.For being so mysterious and silentit is anger and frustration for what goes on around me.The way I work no one shall ever know. For my secrets you will never understand them.I am the great provider and if you give up on me,you shall lose meforever.

Wishing you a pleasant cruise !!!Save the sea and her prescious habitants...
