Nika Neelova Nika Neelova (b. 1987) is a Russian artist based in London. Her recent exhibitions include ‘EVER’, The Tetley, Leeds (2019), ‘She sees the shadows’ Group exhibition DRAF & Mostyn, UK (2018) and EVERYWHEN Brighton CCA (Upcoming 2021). She studied MA Fine Art Sculpture at Slade School of Art, London. Nika Neelova makes evocative sculptures and installations that resonate with associations of history, personal memory, and the rise and fall of civilizations. Inspired by multidisciplinary research into the artefacts that form the surrounding world and using existing and fictional narratives, the pieces are often based on salvaged materials from lived-in environments, reconciling recognisable day-to-day objects and pronouncing their alternative qualities.

    The Lemniscate series are sculptures made from wooden bannisters each from two flights of stairs, reclaimed from houses awaiting demolition, repurposed and fitted together so that each forms an infinite loop. A lemniscate, in mathematics, is a curved line or plane with a distinct 8-shape, consisting of two loops that meet at a central point.

    Bannisters are moulded specifically to fit in the palm of the hand. They were crafted over a hundred years ago by human hands, and spent the next century interacting with other hands guiding them through space. Their wooden surfaces, altered by prolonged exposure to touch, also collect microscopic bits of skin. That way, each sculpture carries the DNA of hundreds of people becoming a collective portrait of the absent human bodies who have come through the now demolished houses. This relationship between skin and wood mimics a direct connection between a person and a building, and suggest a continuity that runs through the human body, architecture and space.

    Lateral cuts refer to a site of phantom architecture and architectural mutations. It is a network of sculptures based on computer generated images of a lateral cross-section exposing the internal layers of a building by making a straight cut through its walls and foundations. Transecting the architectural body in order to  uncover its enclosed structural layers, the sculptures are formed following methods of reverse archaeology. Exposing the remnants of the building replicated in ardex, jesmonite, hand-cast ceramics, glass and metals the sculptures recreate the future ruins of the facades, external and internal walls, insulation, underfloor heating, cabling, pipework, skirting boards, flooring and screed. By revealing  the 'hidden geology' of buildings, the pieces trace a line of continuity between the human body, architecture and geology of earth.

    «Blue 17" – is a part of the geological series of works by Nika Neelova. They are made of jesmonite - synthetic gypsum. The artist creates artificial stones with it and merges them together, combining like a collage. Stones and any other geological formations are always something voluminous, but here they seem flat, so as if they were made in a slice. The sensation of their two-dimensionality is illusory, because only one of their surfaces is flat, the others are hidden. “Blue 17” is an attempt to make something between two-dimensional and three-dimensional, to create something that belongs to indefinite space and time. Fragments of blue color complement the collage of stone-like structures and resemble water flows, bringing the idea of the flow of time and history into the artist's work. This futuristic and at the same time archaeological landscape offers to look at the world as “temporary solidification in the continuing course”.

    «Untitled (ikea stools)» is a plaster relief, molded from the form taken from the IKEA stool leg. With the change of material, it loses its original function, and can no longer withstand human weight, but it still looks like a support, resembling a fragile bone. The relief also continues the attempt of the artist to transfer objects familiar to man in the natural landscape and geological formations. It is painted with chalk and metallic powders, giving different shades depending on the metal: pinkish - copper, greenish - brass. But the main motive of the work is denial and rejection of human ordinariness. Nika Neelova finds an abstract form to a recognizable object, casts each leg by hand, denying technological progress and going back to manual work.
