“I am spiritual but I’m not religious” is a phrase I hear quite often from folk I meet when I am out and about, and something we hear when questions are being asked of ‘celebrities’ about their faith. They are probably telling us that although they don’t go to church they still sense that there is a depth to life beyond the physical. Some collect their wisdom from all religions and literature rather like making choices in a supermarket.

The problem is that, although they know that there is more to life than meets the eye, some of the creeds and formality leaves them wondering and still searching, trying to find that hidden secret or treasure, longing for something to hold on to, almost physical in its tangibility! Of course this can happen for those of us who go to church too.

In the past, Christians spent a great deal of time and travelled to far-flung places on pilgrimage or to collect special holy treasures: relics of the saints or other holy things such as parts of the cross, art, and books. We still enjoy travelling to marvel at such things when we come across them in churches on the continent, art galleries and museums, but are we aware of the treasures closer to home, where we are now?

When it comes to this spiritual treasure we seem to spend quite a lot of our lives looking all over the place for the best spiritual treasure, perhaps spending hours launching requesting prayers into the

heavens, travelling to special holy places and collecting small religious artefacts.

Are we allallallall - churchgoers and “spiritual people” alike - missing what is so much closer by, in our everyday lives and activities?

Is the reason we cannot see the true treasure because we fail to notice the ‘X’ which marks the spot, because we are too busy standing on it, living with it and breathing it in! We don’t need to go on lengthy expeditions, or buy expensive equipment, or have a superior aptitude or even need special company.

All we lack is the willingness to imagine and know that we have everything that we need for a true and deep spiritual life.

At the end of May we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. (Whitsun in the Book of Common Prayer). The disciples did not have to go anywhere to receive the Holy Spirit, did not have to have any special religious artefacts or even the right creeds. The Holy Spirit came to themthemthemthem. Where they were!

The Holy Spirit comes to each of us where we are, whoever we are. We need look no further! In the Confirmation Service the Bishop says: “Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit”, in other words, the Holy Spirit is already with us, even if we are new, old or lapsed Christians.

If we can stay mindful of the moment, the place where we are, the breath that we take, as being sacred, as being filled with the Holy Spirit, then the feeling of

longing will be over, as we cannot long for that which we already have!

At the annual general meetings of the P.C.C. and D.C.C.s there are many ‘thank yous’ said to all those who discreetly get on with the task of cleaning our church buildings, polishing the brasses, arranging flowers, meeting and greeting folks as they arrive at church, and doing the hundred and one things that need to be done but no-one seems to have the ‘job’ of doing them – so to you we say a huge ‘thank you’, and assure you that all that you do is much appreciated.

Finally, may I also record our thanks to our Churchwardens and the members of Pau

One of the less obvious appointments made at PCC AGM’s is that of the Deanery Synoc Representative(s). This article answers the question:

What is a Deanery Synod ?What is a Deanery Synod ?What is a Deanery Synod ?What is a Deanery Synod ?

The Church of England is ‘episcopally led and synodically governed’. The Bishops take responsibility for overall leadership on policy and strategy whilst clergy and people, together in synods, make decisions about the everyday running of the church.

The Deanery Synod is a group of people from parishes across the Deanery who meet during the year. It is a communication link between people in the parishes, the Diocese (Diocesan Synod) and the Church of England nationally (General Synod).

Ideally it means that areas of interest and concern can be communicated from clergy and people in local churches to the wider church. Decisions and consultations can be brought from General Synod to keep the local church informed and involved.

Our parish is in the Ripon Deanery and elects 3 lay representatives (one from each church) who serve for 3 years. They are currently: Linda Billenness (Hunsingore), Brenda Short (Kirk Hammerton) and Jennifer Oxtoby (Nun Monkton) who sit on the Synod for 3 years. Their current term will expire next year.

These lay representatives form the House of Laity in Deanery Synod. Deanery Synod members are ex-offico members of their own Parochial Church Council (PCC).The House of Laity elect a Lay Chair who shares the responsibility of convening meetings and administering Synod with the Rural Dean and a Deanery Synod Secretary, who is responsible for maintaining minutes of meetings.

All clergy licensed to parishes in the Deanery or licensed to work in the Deanery, clerical members of Diocesan and General Synod who are resident in the Deanery and a representative from retired clergy are members and together they form the House of Clergy in Deanery Synod. Our Rector, Paul, is a Member of the House of Clergy.

The Synod meets 4 times each year and are hosted by different parishes churches. Some meetings are open to all parishioners when special guest speakers have been invited. The Synod last met several years ago in Kirk Hammerton. We advertise in Church when this happens.

Items of business that are considered at the General Synod often start life at Deanery level. Interestingly, the proposal to appoint women bishops started life some years ago in our very own Deanery Synod where it was overwhelmingly supported by both laity and clergy.

This highlights the other important role of Deanery Synod representatives is to elect the 3 lay representatives from the Diocese to the General Synod. This is a very important function which will next be exercised in 2014.

A spotlight was shone on the House of Laity in General Synod in 2012 as it was in this forum that the proposal to appoint women bishops failed to reach the required two-thirds majority in the House of Laity, with two of the three laity from Ripon and Leeds voting against.

Next year’s Deanery Synod representatives will have to consider whom to vote for in order to best represent the views of their parishioners on this important issue.

We will publish more information about this early in 2014.

I think that I should start this page with the good news from our Hunsingore Correspondent, Lucy Hainsworth, that she is making a good recovery from her knee surgery and reports that she is ’getting stronger by the day’. She is now able to walk up to about 100 yards on crutches and, best news of all, “the pain has gone”.

Hopefully we will be seeing Lucy up and about in the village very soon and in the meantime we all send her our best wishes.

When Dennis Backhouse died, the District Church Council decided that they wished to place something in the Church in his memory. After a discussion, it was decided that we would buy a ciborium - a container that holds the communion bread on the altar. Our search for something suitable has gone on for several years, and included forays into church suppliers from York to Rome itself.

Finally, however, a few weeks ago, Clive and Linda Billenness, on a business trip to Austria, came upon a beautiful ciborium in a shop in the shadow of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.

Thanks to modern technology, a smartphone photograph was taken and e-mailed to Paul for approval, and a beautiful new ciborium, which matches our chalice, will now grace our altar at larger communion services.

July 7th July 7th July 7th July 7th ---- An Outdoor ServiceAn Outdoor ServiceAn Outdoor ServiceAn Outdoor Service

You may notice that our Morning Worship on the 1st Sunday of July is advertised on page 27 as being ‘hopefully outdoors’. Given the state of the weather so far this summer, this is as much a prayer itself as an announcement !

1st Sunday services in Hunsingore are used to explore different kinds of worship, and have in recent months included Cafe Church (coffee and biscuits during worship not afterwards), Celtic Worship (a spiritual feel from the old Irish Church which involves art and poetry) and Iona Worship (which tries to bring worship closer to the people of the Church).

In July, if the Sun will condescend to join us, we will hold a ‘Picnic Service” in the area around the church doors where there is both grass and gravel to sit on or put chairs on. We will have some chairs available, but please feel free to bring a camping stool or chair if you would like.

We will supply tea, coffee and squash, and if you could bring along some cake or biscuits to eat and share, that would also be great.

If the British Summer lets us down, don’t worry, we will simply move inside the church and continue our worship there,

The Picnic Service will last about 35 minutes so do come and join us at 10 am on Sunday 7th July.

In Memory OfIn Memory OfIn Memory OfIn Memory Of Harold LynasHarold LynasHarold LynasHarold Lynas

On 29th April, we said goodbye to one of Cowthorpe’s longest residents, Harold Lynas, who moved into Cowthorpe with his wife, Joyce, in December 1954.

For almost all of us, Harold, who worked all his life on local farms, and spent over 25 years working at Kendal’s Farm, was an integral part of our village. A true countryman, Harold was a crack shot with his shotgun and equally proficient at skinning rabbits and plucking pheasants.

Harold was also a prolific user of chainsaws and could make your blood run cold at his tales of chopping more off himself with the spinning teeth than off the trees he was working on !

In later years relying on his electric buggy, which was equipped with a large yellow beacon light to announce his presence, Harold was a familiar site on the roads around the area, with his little dog, Brandy, sitting grandly on the running plate. He rarely missed a day to go up to his beloved Boot and Shoe Pub in Tockwith and was, a few years ago, presented with an award by Sam Smiths for his long loyalty to his favourite pub.

Harold’s health deteriorated a great deal in the final months of his life, but most days he could still be seen walking determinedly around the village and would always take the time for a chat about the weather or the state of the fields and the crop.

Joyce has now moved from Cowthorpe to live in Boroughbridge, and will be as greatly missed as Harold. She has asked that we express her gratitude for the help and support she has received during Harold’s final illness and also from all the neighbours who helped her to move house.

We offer our sympathy to Joyce, to Harold’s 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

and couldn't pay for their accommodation so they agreed to work for the sour-faced landlady and thus become acquainted with Leo, a window cleaner who could spin a yarn or two. Who else could have claimed that his allergy to ukuleles was caused by chip fat on his hair?

When Biddy is refused entry to the Tower Ballroom because she has no invitation and is wearing the wrong clothes, the guesthouse landlady gives her her unworn wedding dress so that she can sing in the final. Sadly, she loses to a dancing dog but nevertheless there are happy endings all round.

Peace is announced, Biddy is offered a job in London and Buff announces that she is going to marry her Italian. A rousing chorus of "Wish me Luck" with hearty audience participation brought the performance to an end.

Zoe Land as the perky Buff and Kaitlin Howard as the more serious Biddy gave outstanding performances, and the versatile Robert Angell was ever present as traveller/narrator, Farmer Crow, booking office clerk, the guesthouse landlady, Leo and Oswald, the Tower Ballroom compère, to name but a few.

He wove in and out of the narrative in a way reminiscent of Shakespeare or classical drama. There were some wonderful touches - the chicken shadow

LIGHTS OUT LAND GIRLSLIGHTS OUT LAND GIRLSLIGHTS OUT LAND GIRLSLIGHTS OUT LAND GIRLS There are many signs of impending summer. The rain gets warmer, the snow melts more quickly and the drama season in Hunsingore draws to a close. The quality of the performances do not diminish however, as Maureen Long found out when she went to see the Badapple Theatre’s latest production:

All those of us who saw Badapple Theatre's production of "Back to the Land Girls" were looking forward to its sequel, "Lights Out Land Girls", and we were not disappointed. Travelling with its own portable stage, lights, etc, Badapple Theatre has earned a reputation for versatility and energy, and in "Lights Out Land Girls" there were both in abundance.

The story line of this new play was simple: The war is nearing its end. Buff and Biddy, plus posh frock on which she had spent all her clothing coupons, were travelling to Blackpool where Biddy was to enter a talent competition at Blackpool Tower.

But nothing could be that simple! There were various delays because of poor information, unreliable or nonexistent public transport which resulted in cycling or borrowing a horse drawn cart.

Sadly, Biddy's frock was destroyed by chickens which the girls had agreed to take to Blackpool (don't ask!).

Throughout all these setbacks Buffy remained ever optimistic and cheerful while Biddy's spirits sank. Always in the background was the worry of what the girls would do when the war was over. Would Biddy follow her dream to be an entertainer? Would Buff marry her Italian prisoner of war whose ring she carried with her?

Even when the girls eventually arrived at a guesthouse in Blackpool their problems weren't over; Biddy had lost her purse

puppets, the girls simulating riding bikes - and lots of humour. Let's not forget the famous Hanging Gardens of Basildon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

Jane and her team of helpers had made changes to the menu and we enjoyed an excellent meal which included venison and seafood.

There were additional grounds for applause when it emerged that Jane and Nigel were celebrating their wedding anniversary and where better to spend it than among friends in the village hall with good food and a good laugh?

EDITOR’S NOTE:EDITOR’S NOTE:EDITOR’S NOTE:EDITOR’S NOTE:

Niddside News’ undercover reporters have discovered that Badapple’s Kate Bramley is working on new dramas for the winter season and Nigel has already booked them to return to us later this year to enrich our winter evenings.

We will publish details in the October / November edition of Niddside News. If you live in Nun Monkton you will also have a chance to enjoy one of Badapple’s performances in St Mary’s Church shortly before Christmas.

was kind and they all had a fantastic day. Our reception and KS1 children have also been very busy. They entered the Harrogate Spring Flower Show and won Silver for their entry into the Salad Bowl section. The children learnt all about the science of growth when they planted seeds and tended them until they were ready to send to the show. They combined their literacy and creative art skills to produce a written account of their project.

Now that summer is here, the children are enjoying the addition to the Village Green of a beautiful tree seat which has been funded by various fund-raising events (some still ongoing) One of these is on Friday 24th May at 2.00pm when the children will be manning stalls and selling cakes to assist with its payment. We are looking forward to next half term when our new reception children will be spending three full days in school every week until the end of term. This will help with their transition from playgroup and help them settle into school quicker in September as they will be familiar with school routines.

Time is flying past so quickly, I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of the school year and our Year 6 children will be leaving us to go their separate ways. We have just had our SATs and optional tests, the children have all worked so hard, we are all very proud of their attitude and accomplishments. Some KS2 children are off on residential next week to Kingswood at Dearn Valley.

In April KS2 children were ‘Racing to School’ at Ripon Racecourse, applying their learning to the real world. It is amazing how much they took in when they spent a day behind the scenes at the races. They dressed in racing colours, discovering the shapes, colours and designs which are used in jockeys silks. In the Weighing Room they discovered where the jockeys prepare themselves before each race. They learnt about the design of the racecourse, ran a furlong and discovered how jockeys control their weight by adjusting calorie intake - the science of jockey nutrition. The weather

Caring for the Karen Hill Tribes Linda Billenness attended the May

meeting of Nun Monkton YCA to hear a talk by Penelope Worsley, Founder of the

Charity The Karen Hill Tribes Trust

For several years now, I have been using silver fittings and accessories in my jewellery which was manufactured by members of the Karen Hill Tribes. I chose it because it is beautifully hand-made and is always admired by people, and because I knew it was a Fair Trade product certified by the World Fair Trade Organization.

When I read in Niddside News that Penelope Worsley, founder of the Karen Hill Tribes Trust would be coming to address the Nun Monkton YCA, I put the date in my diary immediately so that I could go to hear more about the work of this charity.

Penelope explained that the Karen People are nomads who have historically suffered great persecution, especially in Burma, where 8 million of them still live. Approximately 250,000 have settled in a 10,000 square mile triangle of land near the North-West corner of Thailand, near the Burmese border, where the Thai Government has provided some support. (Look up Chiang Mai on the internet)

The Karen people, however, live in abject poverty, with limited access to clean drinking water and with their food supply constantly at risk due to flooding. Many of the roads

in the area are little more than mud tracks which are often impassable due to the heavy rains.

Access to education is limited by the distances that children might have to walk to school (if they can get through the mud). Some Karen villages have been fitted with solar panels to provide electricity, but the villagers cannot afford to replace the batteries to store the power when they wear out. (The average family’s income is £40 per year)

Penelope’s 3rd son, Richard, had gone to Thailand to work with the Karen people before joining the Army, and became deeply connected to the area, returning regularly to work with them. Richard

made many friends, and worked tirelessly to install systems to provide clean, fresh drinking water and drainage systems.

Tragically, in 1996, Richard died in a car crash while visiting Thailand between tours of duty in the Army.

Penelope then founded the charity to continue Richard’s work with three objectives:

• To improve health through water and sanitation projects and the provision of mosquito nets and blankets (the weather is as cold there in January as it is in Yorkshire)

• To improve access to education through the provision of transportation, food at school for children and sponsorship of university students (most Karen people over the age of 25 have never received any formal education).

• To improve income generation capability for the Karen people, by the provision of tractors, irrigation schemes for crops and rice and supporting small projects such as coffee growing and silver manufacture. (The King of Thailand originally sponsored the silver manufacturing with a gift of silver bullion)

Penelope has worked tirelessly for years raising funds to support many schemes.

In 1997, one village dedicated their village water supply scheme to Richard’s memory and several hundred Karen youngsters have now received University education, with many returning to help their own people.

On her 70th birthday, she undertook a sponsored parachute jump, which raised £18,000 to support a school dormitory which enables children to stay overnight at their school and not have to walk miles every day. (£50 will feed 50 children at school for an academic year)

After her safe landing, Penelope decided to hand over the running of the Trust to her Board of Trustees, and step back.

Providentially, someone came forward to take over much of the day-to-day operation of the Trust, which is run between York and a local office in Thailand - the Trust places great emphasis on self-help.

Penelope brought with her some of the colourful clothing which is the daily garb of the Karen people, as well as shoulder bags, scarves and samples of the lovely

silver work, some of which were seriously heavy ! All the money generated from the sales goes back to help the Karen people and a lot of sales were made at the end of the talk.

For more information, please visit the Trust’s website at

www.karenhilltribes.org.uk

My thanks to Nun Monkton YCA who made this an open meeting, and to the ladies who kindly prepared some delicious snacks for us to enjoy before (and after) the talk. The refreshing glass of wine was also much appreciated.

This was a highly enjoyable and very informative meeting, and I am slightly jealous of Nun Monkton for having such a great group on their doorsteps

Penelope is currently reviewing how to make it easier to buy the things being sold by the Trust, and Niddside News will publicise any news about this.

In the meantime, I will continue to use Karen Hill Tribes silver in making and repairing jewellery, and have decided that in future I will donate a percentage of each sale to the Trust when I use Karen silver.

Remembering Warren Fenwicke-Clennell David Aykroyd writes:

I was delighted to have been asked to write these few words about my dear friend Warren. I have known him for in excess of 50 years and we have always had the greatest fun together.

He was my tennis partner for almost half of this time in our local men’s four until only very recently. When the partnership had reached a combined 316 years of age I forced him to retire in spite him being the best of us!!

He excelled in nearly all sports and his grandchildren (which he shares with me as my daughter, Emily, is married to Luke, his younger son) have, I am glad to say, inherited all his skills. They are all good at tennis, the boys are fine cricketers to say nothing about the youngest boy’s speed at long distance cross country running.

I remember the day when I returned home to Carlton Farm. He was standing by my car waiting for me. He opened the boot of the car and showed me 3 wonderful silver cups which his labrador, a dog which I had bred and given to him had won. He had won the Puppy Stake, the best performance on a runner and the dog best liked by the guns that had been shooting that day. I say “the dog had won” but I should have said that “Warren had won”. He was a brilliant dog handler added to the rest of his skills. He was a tower of strength and a great supporter of the Yorkshire Field-trial Society which he was involved with for many years.

I must end up by saying that I and all that knew him will miss him a lot and wish Caroline all our sympathy and best wishes.

Over the past few years, we have held a Taizé Worship annually within Lower Nidderdale.

This year, this service will be held in St John’s Kirk Hammerton at 6.30pm on Sunday 14th July.

Taizé worship is quiet and reflective. The congregation remain seated throughout the service except during a period of prayer and reflection, when they are invited to move around the church to visit prayer stations.

Taizé music involves the chanting of repeated phrases in both English and Latin, but because the music used in already accompanied by a choir, you are free to join in, whisper the words to yourself, hum along or just sit quietly and listen to the words.

If you have never experienced Taizé, do please feel free to come and try it.

Crickets for tea? Yum!Crickets for tea? Yum!Crickets for tea? Yum!Crickets for tea? Yum! Pupils from Kirk Hammerton C of E Primary School and Staveley Community Primary School joined forces for a very special outdoor learning experience recently.

62 children spent 2 days and 1 night in the great outdoors on the school fields undertaking activities such as building shelters, cooking on, and singing round a camp fire, team games and the most exciting part...erecting and sleeping in a tent.

The programme was delivered by ‘Under Canvas’, a specialist company run by Sinan Osman & Ian Bell, who between them have decades of experience in outdoor education.

Sinan said ‘’We have developed our School Camp in the School Grounds concept specifically to give primary school children who have never experienced camping or bushcraft, their first step into the great outdoors.

The great outdoors allows children of all ages, abilities and experience to learn outside the classroom by providing new challenges and confidence building skills.’’

The two village schools share a head teacher in an innovative collaborative partnership established in September 2011.

Acting Head Teacher Mr Joe Cooper described the experience as ‘’a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of our pupils. We aim to bring together the pupils from our 2 schools on a regular basis so they can build new friendships and take part in challenges together. It is a delight to see the children push their own personal boundaries whilst having lots of fun.”

Poppy, a Staveley pupil said ‘’ my favourite part was making friends with the Kirk Hammerton children - and making

hot chocolate’’.

The highlight for some was the chance to eat cricket and meal worm pancakes! Just like a Bush Tucker Challenge.

In fact one pupil who was rather worried about the creepy crawlies visiting the tent at night was heard to say when asked if they had visited, ‘Yes they did but we ate them !’’

On the 23rd April, the residents of St.John’s House launched an attempt to create a World Record.

“And what will this record be for ?” you may ask.

The answer is: to be recognised as the World’s Oldest Choir. With a total membership of 13, the choir boasts a total age of 1,180 years.

The choir was formed in 2012 by Activity Co-Ordinator Ruth Strangeway who has been singing and acting for almost 40 years. After months of singing together, the number of residents taking part was growing. Staff and visiting family members were starting to join in regularly.

At the beginning of 2013, it was decided to record a CD, and on 19th February a recording engineer came to St.John’s and

the recording was made.

It was then that quest to achieve the record of World’s Oldest Choir, when Ruth’s research that no one had ever bothered to claim the title based on the average age of the choristers.

Guinness World Records were contacted and on 11 April permission was given for an attempt.

The choir used a planned concert on 23 April for their Record attempt, which generated a lot of local press interest, with Look North coming to film them.

Documentation has now been submitted to Guinness World Records, and their decision is anticipated for about July 15th.

We will report progress in the next edition of Niddside News.

being at the Coronationbeing at the Coronationbeing at the Coronationbeing at the Coronation

It is, as you may have noticed, the sixtieth anniversary of the Queen’s coronation this month. If you are under 55 it is probably simply a matter of history.

That piece of history, however, will be relived this month in many grainy pictures on our television screens - even, perhaps, some in colour, from the cinema newsreels of the time. For those of us over that age, however, it is probably one of those memories - images, really - that you can never quite forget. In truth, it is part of our history.

Millions, like me, sat in a crowded room and gazed at a tiny television screen on which black and white images appeared of the distant scene in and around Westminster Abbey. Up till then, TV had been largely a rich person’s toy, but no one was going to miss the event of a lifetime.

Aided by the entrepreneurial genius of Radio Rentals and other newly formed competitors, we watched on rented sets, our own or a neighbour’s.

Television suddenly became available to almost everybody. Indeed, I can’t think of anyone in our very ordinary circle of friends in a London suburb who didn’t watch the coronation as it happened.

And that made a difference. Previous coronations had been great affairs of State, attended by the nobility, the great and the good - just a few hundred of them. True, the crowds could line the route to and from the abbey and cheer and wave flags, but once the real business began they were definitely outside. But now - miraculously, it seemed - we were inside: indeed, we had a better view of proceedings than most of those distinguished folk who had got tickets for the abbey.

This, like no other, was the People’s Coronation, and the young Queen and her fair-haired sailor husband were the People’s Monarchy, in a way none of their predecessors could possibly have imagined. When the archbishop placed the crown on her head, we were just feet away (or so it seemed). When he anointed her with oil, we could see it glisten. We could join in the prayers and the hymns, hear the glorious music and fanfares, share with the congregation in the abbey an occasion that was, after all, a vital part of the life of our nation and the Commonwealth.

Time and again over those few days we sang ‘Long live our gracious Queen’, and she has done it. ‘Long to reign over us, happy and glorious’. Exactly.

JUSTICE

Every time there is a story about the

law and justice in the newspapers or on

television they always use the same

symbol to show justice – a woman

wearing a blindfold over her eyes,

holding a set of scales in one hand and

a sword in the other.

The blindfold is there to show that

nothing affects the decision except

the scales.

The scales show that justice is only

right when both sides weigh the same

and that all are equal before the law.

The sword is there to show that the

good are protected and the wicked

punished.

All through Jesus’ teaching is the idea

of judgement – that we all shall stand

before the throne of God and answer

for what we have done. And when we

do, the judge will be Jesus because he

lived on earth as we do. St Matthew’s

Gospel, chapter 25, verses 31 to 46

tells us about this judgment.

What did the cloned sheep say to the other sheep?

“I am ewe”
