Dear Friends,
What a time we have had just recently, ‘Le Tour’, Wimbledon, Grand Prix racing, World Cup football, Rugby and Cricket, to mention but a few. If you are even remotely interested in sport there must have been something you could thoroughly enjoy. Over the years, sport has come through some very difficult times, what with accusations of bribery, game fixing and all sorts of hullaballoo regarding professionalism and amateurism.
One thing that sticks out in my mind are the near running battles of football ‘supporters’ back in the 60s, 70s and 80s. We all appreciate that if you support a particular team or participant in a sporting activity there will be some ‘high octane’ moments; either of euphoria or despondency.
There is no way of getting away from the fact that ‘Le Tour’ brought an immense sense of joy, excitement and friendliness. When else can we find 2.5 million people coming together to relish in the efforts of the 190 or so men, streaming around the roads and lanes of Yorkshire.
There can be no doubt that anyone watching the television coverage of the event, whether in Yorkshire, elsewhere in the U.K., or abroad, must have been bowled-over by the sheer beauty of the countryside, the sunshine, the amazing involvement of the Yorkshire folk, and all the activities taking place right across the county.
For me, this has to have been one of the most delightful sporting experiences of a lifetime.
Not only was the action infectious – those sprints up hills and on timed sections – but the riders demonstrated a real camaraderie with each other, whilst at the same time being highly competitive.
I remember my father telling me at one time that, ‘Football is a gentleman’s game played by hooligans, and rugby is a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen’. I’m not quite sure whom he was quoting, but I have heard a similar assessment from others over the years. Nevertheless, what is it that we find so difficult in not only sport but also life in general? Do we find it so hard to be competitive without ‘coming to blows’ over what is, after all, a game? All of this extends into the broader realms of life as well.
It is good to take things seriously, but surely, that has to be in proportion to the ‘bigger picture’. We all have our own personal agendas and give greater or lesser importance to what affects us. However, so much of our lives are dictated to by our ‘diaries’ and the needs of those around us; the pressures and expectations of those we work with and for; having or not having the wherewithal that allows us to do what we would wish to do; peer pressure, both in adolescence and full adulthood.
There is a prayer, which has often been used to help us to approach some of

these apparent insurmountable difficulties, which is:
Grant me, Lord, the serenity of knowing that I do your will
and contentment with my lot.
Grant me the courage to change what I can change,
the grace to accept what I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference.
So as the summer begins to get well and truly under way, let us hope that we can all find some time to ‘re-charge the batteries’, and to take advantage of some ‘quality time’ for ourselves, and those near and dear to us, over the coming weeks.

Visitors from the U.S.A.Visitors from the U.S.A.Visitors from the U.S.A.Visitors from the U.S.A. The Rector writes... The Choir from The Episcopal Church of St Elisabeth, Memphis, Tennessee visited us on Sunday, 29th June 2014 for the Benefice Eucharist and they were wonderful.
We had a lovely service in St Mary’s Church, Nun Monkton with some marvellous singing from both the choir and congregation. Afterwards the shared lunch was enjoyed in a marquee on The Green, with ducks on The Pond for additional company and vocal contribution.
Many thanks to all those who organised the ‘accommodation’ and food, we were able to participate in some delightful fellowship with our guests. After lunch the choir made a visit to The Church of St John the Baptist, Kirk Hammerton.
The Choir’s home church was built in 2013 when they moved from ‘downtown Memphis’ to very ‘out-of-town Memphis, and were finding it difficult to comprehend our churches from 12th and 9th centuries – something of a culture shock – nevertheless, they enjoyed every minute of their visit.

Pictured opposite with Rev Canon Andrew Hawken, Chaplain of Aude - Midi Pyrenees, and Area Dean for the South of France, it was a big day for licences, since Andrew had to receive a licence from the Bishop of Europe authorising him to conduct Linda’s licensing in the Bishop’s absence. Champagne corks popped after the service as this was a day of multiple celebration for Linda, having also received confirmation that she has been awarded her MA in Theology, specialising in Fresh Expressions of Worship, marking the end
of 9 years of study at York St John University. Linda will return to York in November to receive her award in York Minster.

BarbecueBarbecueBarbecueBarbecue On 28 June to celebrate Le tour de France a barbecue was held in Hunsingore. It was well attended, despite the weather, and we all enjoyed a delicious spread of salads and desserts to accompany the meat so ably cooked by the chefs. Nigel had prepared a clever quiz - with a cycling theme, of course - that left many of us scratching our heads, mystified. We all appreciate the hard work that goes into organising such an event, not to mention clearing up after it, so many thanks to everyone who was involved in making the evening such a success. £500 was raised and will be shared between the village hall fund and St John the Baptist Church.
Hunsingore Village MakeoverHunsingore Village MakeoverHunsingore Village MakeoverHunsingore Village Makeover Hunsingore has undergone a makeover! Trees have been felled on Church Hill and a major programme of maintenance has been initiated in the churchyard. Bunting and yellow bikes abound and even the telephone box is decorated - all in honour of Le Tour de France, of course.. We shall miss the
bunting and bikes when they are taken down but at least the wide open spaces where those old trees used to be will be with us for a while yet. On 6 July when Le Tour passed through our parish many residents of Hunsingore flocked on foot or by bike to the A59 to watch this amazing event roll by and there was quite a party spirit there at the roadside. How lucky we were to be able to walk through fields of waving barley on a sunny morning to experience the greatest annual sporting event in the world.
Dates for Your DiaryDates for Your DiaryDates for Your DiaryDates for Your Diary On 10 October the Badapple Theatre Company will perform “Daily Bread” in Hunsingore Village Hall, and Alan Bennett’s “Talking Heads” will return on 14 November.

Friends and neighbours of Mick were stunned to learn of his sudden death only a few weeks after his wife, Pat, died. He was 72. Mick had worked as a printer and also, with Pat, ran the pub in Kirk Hammerton where fishermen's breakfasts, served at 6.30am, were a speciality. In the late 70's he and Nigel ran a youth club in Hunsingore. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in Peace and rise in glory.

Bicycles and all things French were the order of the day in church for the Tour de France weekend - the decorators really used their imagination!
We had a glorious Eiffel Tower, bikes large and small, - not yellow, (they were all in the village) - helmets, wheels, jumpers, a little French lady dozing under a signpost to Paris, baguettes, wild flowers from Provence, sweet peas from a Yorkshire garden and a colourful frieze of cyclists from the School- children.
A big Thank You to everyone who contributed in any way.

Kirk & Green Hammerton WI meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in either Kirk or Green Hammerton village hall. We have an interesting range of speakers & activities with new members & visitors always welcome.
In June we were eager to hear from Mrs Cluny Chapman after her article in 29th March’s Yorkshire Post Magazine. She gave an illustrated talk entitled ‘Sheep to Shawl’ and we were not disappointed. Her progress from studying textiles to shepherd, spinner, textile maker & artist while juggling with motherhood had us all enthralled – what a talented lady! She finished her talk with a demonstration of hand spinning using a Shetland style spinning wheel & provided a range of her products for us to see & buy. No one seemed to want to go home that evening!
We followed this with our plant & produce stall at Green Hammerton Open Gardens in the front garden of Elsie (WI secretary) & Richard Rymer. WI members provided a goodly array of cakes, biscuits, jams & chutneys as well as plants. Despite the weather not being its kindest we
were able to donate £50 to the Open Gardens total & a similar amount to our own funds for speakers, etc.

The National Governors’ Association, which represents more than 300,000 school governors across England has called for the repeal of the provision of the 1944 Education Act which requires all state schools to provide Christian worship every day.
The NGA, whose proposal has been welcomed by the British Humanist
Association, have asserted that this requirement is no longer relevant in non-religious state schools.
The Church of England has denounced the proposal, stating that it would “deny children the opportunity to experience something they wouldn’t experience elsewhere in their lives”
The Roman Catholic Church have also condemned it, saying that they believe the requirement “provides a strong moral framework for young people.”

Vanessa reports that her journey was a great experience despite torrential rain and more hills than she could count. High points included staying in a variety of memorable locations including a convent and an artist’s house, as well as the ride into Paris and being photographed in front of the Eiffel Tower.

CHURCH OF ENBLAND TO HAVE CHURCH OF ENBLAND TO HAVE CHURCH OF ENBLAND TO HAVE CHURCH OF ENBLAND TO HAVE WOMEN BISHOPSWOMEN BISHOPSWOMEN BISHOPSWOMEN BISHOPS
The General Synod of the Church of England has today given its final approval for women to become bishops in the Church of England. The vote in the General Synod on the measure was carried by the required two-thirds majority in the three constituent parts of the Synod: the House of Bishops, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity. The voting results were as follows: House of Bishops Yes 37 No 2 Abstentions 1 House of Clergy Yes 162 No 25 Abstentions 4 House of Laity Yes 152 No 45 Abstentions 5 This means the first woman bishop could potentially be appointed by the end of the year. Today's vote comes 18 months after the proposal was last voted upon in November 2012 when the proposal failed to achieve the required two thirds majority in the House of Laity. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said: "Today is the completion of what was begun over 20 years with the ordination of women as priests. I am delighted with today's result. Today marks the start of a great adventure of seeking mutual flourishing while still, in some cases disagreeing.” This Act of Synod is part of a package which also includes a Declaration made by the House of Bishops (which amongst other things sets out five 'guiding
principles') and Regulations, to be made once the Canon is enacted, providing for a mandatory disputes resolution procedure.
Following this vote, the Measure will be submitted by the Synod's Legislative Committee to the Ecclesiastical Committee of Parliament, which will produce a report on it. If it is to pass into law the Measure must subsequently be approved by both Houses of Parliament. If they approve it, it will then receive the Royal Assent and be brought into force by the Archbishops.
The Canon can then be returned to the Synod, in November if the Parliamentary processes are completed sufficiently quickly, so that it can be formally enacted. It is at that point that the law will be changed, so as to allow women to be consecrated as bishops."
If this timetable is achieved, it is possible that the first woman might be consecrated as a bishop by Christmas.
The Christian press have identified a number of leading candidates to become the first appointee.
Among these are the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, Dean of York Minster, and the Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin who is currently the chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.
