Hospitality Highlight Student interview with: Justine Lavoie Class of 2015 Event Planner at LeBaron Hills Country Club

What did you like most about Nichols? I liked that it was small so that all the professors knew you by name. They want you to succeed  they were very understanding.

Why did you chose to major in Hospitality and how is it helping you today?

When I was looking at colleges I saw that Nichols had an Entertainment Management program and that was something I was truly interested in. After I got accepted I found out that they took that major away. Even though I was disappointed I talked to an adviser and I found out that Hospitality could work just as well. I am so happy this happened because I now am doing something that I love and I'm glad that things turned out the way they did.

What did you like most about the hospitality program? The hospitality program helped me to be the successful person I am today. The classes and field trips helped me fully understand all of the lessons in and out of the class room.

Were there any unique experiences or projects that you did while taking a hospitality class? There were 2 classes/ projects that really helped me figure out what I wanted to do as a career. The first one was the event planning class I got to actually plan an event; we had to get everything on our own from getting our own sponsors to figuring out where to hold the event. The second is that I took a senior level Hospitality class and we had to volunteer at the DCU center. We saw how little details that the company missed were very important to the event. This is actually where I found my internship.

Where was your internship and what did you do? I actually did two internships. I did one at Mohegan Sun and one at All Points Travel. I got both of these while taking classes at Nichols. Mohegan Sun taught me a lot of things I even got to run a few concerts by myself making sure the bands were happy and everything went perfect. It was a great experience and it was so much fun. All Points Travel was a travel agency and I met the owner at a trade show that happened to be going on at the same time I was working the function at the DCU center. This internship was fun I got to go to expositions/ trade shows to advertise travel. I was mostly doing marketing and running the trade shows!

What did your internship teach you? It taught me that I loved talking to people and making them happy. It really helped me see what I wanted to do with my life and that is to run events.

Would you recommend the Hospitality program and if so, what would you say to a student who was interested in pursuing Hospitality? I would highly recommend this program. This program is not for everyone but once you try it out you will love it. I know that it helped me figure out my future and if Hospitality is for you than Nichols is the place to get your foot in the door.

If you could say one thing to current students, what would that be? If you are serious about your future please put the effort in because if the professors here see your dedication they will help you and try to help you build your career.

Knowing what you know today would you have still chosen to be a hospitality major? I would choose Hospitality over and over again if I could because I am living my dream. I honestly couldn't picture my life without it.

Internship Highlight Student interview with: Lauren Noga Class of 2017 Intern at Mohegan Sun

How did you hear about this internship and what did the internship entail? I heard about this internship by going to talk to Professor Richards about what my options would be at Mohegan Sun.  I was an intern at the front desk at Mohegan Sun in the hotel.  Basics of this involved: learning the LMS operating system, checking guests in and out, solving problems for guests, etc.

How  has being a hospitality major helped you during your internship?  Being a hospitality major, you have to have a strong love towards working with people.  Basic knowledge from class about hotels was very helpful in my internship, as well as the skills I learned from Resort and Conference management with being organized, professional and working well with others.

What is your daily work day like? I worked a 9-5 shift, so my shift was different than somebody who works swing shift or overnights. In the morning, I come in, take the shuttle over to the casino, walk to my time clock and punch in.  I go to a big cash machine, where I get my cash for my drawer for the day, and go upstairs to get pre shifted before I go out to the front desk.  I have to sign onto LMS and at that time of day I usually start checking people out, but some people are also coming to check in.  Throughout the day, I check express check out boxes that are located next to the elevators, that way guests can drop a piece of paper into a box to check out instead of coming to the front desk.  At the end of the day, I have to “roll out” which means I count up all my cash, total up all my paid out tickets, cash tickets and print a report to make sure all my cash and tickets are even and I’m not short or over any money. Then when all of that is in order, I drop my cash back into the cash machine and go home.

Was there a difficult situation that you had to deal with? If so, what did you do to handle the situation and how you over came it? I had a supervisor that was very condescending and rude whenever myself and other agents asked her for help when we needed it.  It became difficult to work with her because I would avoid asking her questions in order to save myself from dealing with her attitude.  Eventually, one day she was the only supervisor for me to go to, and she was condescending yet again.  In a professional way, I told her that her attitude towards me was affecting how I was working and it was really bothering me.  Afterwards, she apologized for making me feel that way, and we worked together fine the rest of my time there.

What was your favorite part of your internship? My favorite part of my internship was all the people I worked with.  Working in a hospitality environment is very stressful, and the people I worked with made work fun.  I love people, and the good guests definitely outweigh the bad; however, there are those times when you get those really awful guests and you just need to go to the back office and complain and crack some jokes with the people you work with, and then everything is OK again.    Would you recommend this internship to other students who are pursuing hospitality management? I definitely would recommend this to other students pursuing hospitality management. However, there is a big “but” to that.  This internship is definitely for people who have tough skin, and already have experience in a hotel. The operating system is difficult to learn, and people will yell at you. Mohegan Sun is a great company to work for, and they really treat their employees well.  I would definitely go back after this experience.

What’s Happening In The Classroom? Facility  Opera-ons

Siobhan Kelleher Class of 2018 This semester I was lucky enough to get into Professor Richards night class Facility Operations. The first couple weeks of the semester we learned about different ways to measure the success of a company within the Hospitality Industry. One interesting thing I took away from this was how to measure the Customer Lifetime Value. This will be very useful in the future for my career and other hospitality classes.  Customer Lifetime Value is the measure of how much customers in a certain demographic will spend at your business. Currently we are working in groups to compare two companies to one another. Each group selected 2 companies in similar locations with demographics. Each group has a weekly meeting, called a

status update, where we demonstrate to our Professor how far we are coming along on the project. Each week we have different sections within the project due so we can manage time to complete it. The final project will be a video we will be making in the green screen room showing our research and proving why one company is stronger than the other.

Courtney Hemingway Class of 2017 The Hospitality Operations night course focuses on developing an understanding of the factors that effect organization's in the Hospitality Industry. This includes the organization's concept along with their service qualities and different measures to analyze and improve their service. The goal is to develop ways to create the best possible experience for guests and customers. We have currently been working on a portfolio-worthy team project to demonstrate these concepts. We are comparing two similar organizations in the Hospitality Industry using online reviews. From this, we have been able to analyze what their concepts are and determine the service factors that make one organization unsatisfactory and

one organization great. With the help of Professor Richards, we have had the opportunity to look into the customer's journey and present our ideas on how to increase the success of the unsatisfactory organization.

Travel  and  Tourism    David Arute Class of 2016 The Travel and Tourism class gave us a unique experience that you would not have been given in any other class.  Being a Hospitality Management Major it is important to learn everything you can about the travel industry, and that is what this class did.  I found the LEAD program we took when we traveled to Disney was very intriguing, it gave us the opportunity to learn about the Travel industry outside of the classroom and be right in the heart of the Travel Industry, Disney World.  The most unique and interesting part of the class was the readings we were given each week, which were the process Disney WORLD goes through to be such an outstanding business. These readings helped me understand what it takes

to be successful in the Hospitality industry. The Travel and Tourism class has a wide variety of hands on assignment some all that are focused on Hospitality.  This class helped me understand more about the Travel industry and expand my knowledge in the Hospitality industry as well.

Hospitality Spring Break Trip

Taking the travel and tourism course here at Nichols

was very valuable. We were introduced to a different side of

hospitality that many people forget is a part of the industry.

We learned everything about the travel industry from how

airlines operate to planning a trip. We even got to put this

into practice by creating our own travel itinerary to a

destination we wish to go to. We had to maintain a budget,

while also incorporating all of the aspects needed in a real life

vacation such as flights, hotels, food, and activities. Not only did we just learn about traveling, but we also got

to travel as a class to the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World! We stayed five days and four nights at

one of Disney’s resorts, Port Orleans-French quarter. There, we participated in

three different classes that were a part of Disney’s YES program. The classes took

place in the Disney parks, the first two being in Epcot, the last one in Magic

Kingdom. During these programs we focused on developing and strengthening our

leadership skills as we worked together in groups, solving problems and coming

up with new ideas to bring back with us to Nichols. The most important thing I

learned from the YES program was that a great leader does not work alone, but

works along with others. We also learned the many

different strategies that Disney uses to go above and

beyond for their customers and employees, or as Disney refers to them, guests

and cast members. Something very unique about this program was being able to

go behind the scenes and underground at Disney. We got to physically see how

one of the biggest companies in the world operates and it was truly an amazing

experience. This was a trip of a lifetime and I’m so happy to have been given the

opportunity to participate in a class like this one.
