AUSTRALIAN CUP FINAL …

this Saturday night!

ON SATURDAY NIGHT at The Meadows we will witness the 11th running of the Australian Cup over 525 metres. Steeped in tradition, the Austra-lian Cup commenced in 1958 when Rookie Rebel won at North Mel-bourne, with its most recent hero be-ing Taswegian star, St. Pierre at the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Asso-ciation’s fourth ‘home’. The early scratching of Spring Gun did have a negative effect on the Group 1 series, as he seemed to have heaps of class on his rivals in a heat, and presuming he’d won, he would have been one of the popular picks to

land the rich final. After the ‘sudden death’ heats and following the box draw, my se-lection is the high-level performer, Dyna Tron to take out the Rover Mowers Australian Cup final. Drawn ideally in the six, the ‘Team Dailly’ prepared dog has a list of credits, as he’s the current Group 2 Geelong Cup, Group 1 Melbourne Cup and Group 1 Hobart Thousand winner.

The Brendan Wheeler owned son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale should get a good run early and I can envisage him occupying top spot on the podium at race’s end.

Tom Dailly, summed up the race by saying that whilst Dyna Tron had drawn favourably, he would be hop-ing that the avid racer could find the lead in the early stages, similar to his equal fastest 29.75 heat victory. Tom liked Dyna Trion’s run be-cause… “he came out well then was turned sideways at the first corner and yet went on to win.” “Yes, he’s done a nice job. He did exactly what he had to and held on strongly to the line.” “He’s spot-on at the moment and he pulled up a treat after his heat run,” the Anakie bloke confided. Looking for a danger to Dyna

Tron, I’ve settled on top NSW cam-paigner, Oaks Road. Drawn box seven won’t be a dis-advantage if Dyna Tron jumps fast; in fact it will work in the well-bred dog’s favour, as he’ll get a good cart across the field. The recent Perth Cup winner has contested most of the feature events around the nation, and ran 29.89 to land a heat last week.

One thing’s for certain, his men-tor, Mark Gatt will have his charge primed to perform. If Zara Zulu can replicate her heat run then she will lead them past the post the first time in the $175.000 to

the winner ‘black type’ final. She registered 4.95 (just .02 out-side Amado’s split record) and siz-zled past the next checkpoint in 17.54 for trainer, Ros Hume and owner, Geoff Collins. The daughter of Mogambo and Zulu Zepha ran out a five lengths winner in equal Best Of Night 29.75, showing that she can also get the 525 metres trip at the Northcorp Boule-vard layout. It’s hard to bypass a Jason Thompson runner in big races, and Peggy May came from the eight alley to snare a heat in 30.01. You’d have to wonder if the white and black greyhound can put the two trap to advantage this time, and also whether she can match the early speed of rails runner, Zara Zulu. Graeme Bate has two runners in the Australian Cup final, with David Bale likely to perform the better after being allocated box three.

His other charge, Gordon Bale, drew the eight gate, will need luck in running, whilst Soda Boy and Auda-cious Elle will complete the line-up for Saturday night’s action attraction.

- Allan Hawkswell

With every stride they glide if they had wings they could fly With the thrill of the chase these animals set the pace Sub-thirty they run if they are to compete as a good one On Australian Cup night only one will appear to be worthy Of the crowds’ cheer pronounced the one a son of a gun!

- Kristopher Dates Oozing class, Dyna Tron charged into another Group final by landing a heat of the Australian Cup in a fast 29.75, downing the luckless Allen Hertz.

JUST WHEN it looked like the mighty West Australian stayer, Miata would dominate the staying ranks for a fair part of this year, there was a tiny 27kg chaser with the right bloodlines that produced an effort that had that hint of “I’ll take anyone on” written all over her. The Dom Lauricella trained Arapina Star was produced for a first-up effort over the Glebe 720 metres and dominated the Mul-tiquip Stake, running a most im-pressive 42.30 at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

This daughter of Bombastic Shiraz has also broken the 30-seconds barrier on two occasions over the 520 metres course, so there is a fair chance that not many other stayers would lead her. Arapina Star exited box five and showed out quickly to lead the pink vested Thrilling Bloom on settling down, with Thrilling Reign next.

At the lap mark Arapina Star started to run her rivals along, and with slick sections, was a clear-cut leader heading to the back.

Thrilling Bloom was working overtime down the back straight and was making no impression on the leader. Down the side Arapina Star really let down and got right away, and with nothing else a chance, turned for home well clear. At the judge it was Arapina Star by six lengths over Thrilling Bloom, with Quiet Achiever run-ning on to grab third place, a fur-ther three lengths away. Arapina Star is owned by Leon Bozovitch, who bred the February 2009 litter of Arapina Miss, who herself won an Association Cup, so staying is in the veins.

From 26 starts to date Arapina Star has now secured five wins with 12 placings.

Thrilling Bloom (Primo Uno x Ready To Star), trained by Russell Mansley, has had 41 career starts showing six wins and 10 placings whilst the Queenslander, Quiet Achiever (Where’s Pedro x Petite Mamselle), prepared by Ken Haw-kins, has raced on 29 occasions for four wins and 13 placings.

WENTY PARK’S weekend fixture saw three staying events run and won, which may just be start of recognising that the race programming brought in last year to promote the half-milers may in fact be starting to work ever so slowly. ANOTHER impressive winner over the 720 metres was Cousin Callum, who won first-up over the distance and clocked a most re-spectable 42.47.

Seven days earlier Cousin Callum had competed in The Rookie Rebel at The Meadows, and after a checked run, didn’t finish too far from the winner, Lektra Jay. When the lids opened in the Centrebet Stake, best away was Heat The Plate from box four, with Gail Allen in the yellow vest and Cousin Callum sporting the pink singlet not too far away when they settled down. At the lap mark Heat The Plate broke clear, but Cousin Callum worked into second spot and al-ways looked to have the leader covered as they entered the back straight.

Heat The Plate was still in charge as they came down the side,

but Cousin Callum had warmed to his task and quickly darted to the front, with Gail Allen making some ground from well back. In the run home Cousin Callum stretched right out for a four and a quarter lengths win over Gail Allen, while Lavana wound up third, a further one and a quar-ter lengths away. Cousin Callum, by Hallucinate from Gondola Serenade has now had 49 career starts for 13 wins and 20 placings for Ray and Sharon Webster.

Gail Allen (Collision x Olivia Allen), trained by Simon Rhodes, has had 42 career starts with 15 wins and 10 placings, whilst the Andy Lord trained Lavana (Collision x Token Whiz) has raced 71 times for 12 wins and 25 placings.

Saturday snippets EARLIER in the day some great racing was at Potts Park, where the GRNSW Country Challenge Series was won by the Shane Wheeler prepared Marvicki, who defeated Chenzhou Boy by six lengths, with El Bonito third.

The winner led throughout and clocked a fast 29.93 on a track that has returned in superb form for 2012.

So good is the racing surface that a new 303 metres track record was clocked by the Fred Chircop trained Princess Taleah, who won the final race on the program in 17.05.

ALSO from the weekend is the continued success of former cham-pion stayer, Miagi… as a sire.

The all way win by Cosmic Image at headquarters followed a recent winning double at The Meadows, and this under-utilised former Greyhound Of The Year might just grab some interest as he ticks all the right boxes, particu-larly with ability and temperament.

NSW

Ron Arnold

At Potts Park on the weekend, Marvicki strolled to an emphatic six lengths victory in 29.93 for Shane Wheeler of Blue Haven and owner, John Allain.

After settling just off the pace at his first 720 metres outing, Cousin Calllum raced away to win the 5th Grade at Wentworth Park in 42.47, kick-starting a staying career in the best possible way.

Audacious Elle has had a meteoric rise in the past couple of weeks. Contesting low-end Grade 5 events in town in early January, the black daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Pure Elle displayed good box manners by taking out a heat and final of the Floodfawn Damsels Dash at Traralgon then slipped away by gaining promotion into the heats by scoring an all the way win in the Preliminaries on February 18. Handling awkward draws, the chunky 28.3kg bitch has early pace to burn, which was quite evident in her all the way 29.82 heat victory.

Dyna Tron has picked up some fine silverware to date, landing the Geelong and Melbourne Cups, plus an epic shoot-out with Rewind in the Hobart Thousand final. He didn’t lose any friends either with his gallant effort to lead all the way in the Brisbane Cup, finding local star, Glen Gallon too strong in the run home. But what will define Dyna Tron as one of the greatest chasers of all-time is if he can clinch an Australian Cup. Only two greyhounds have managed to snare the elusive Australian and Melbourne Cup Group 1 double, Rookie Rebel (1957/1958) and Tangaloa, back in 1978 and 1980. Dyna Tron probably doesn’t need that extra pressure to realise just how hard it is to capture both famous races, and will be thankful he can’t read. Benjamin John, Cheltenham Lass, Go Wild Teddy, Half Your Luck and Tenthill Doll are a few of superstars that come to mind who have been fortunate to win either leg and come up short in the other. Dyna Tron bounced back to his best with an all the way equal Best Of Night 29.75 heat win, recording 5.05 and 17.73 along the way. Achieving success in this world recognised greyhound race will catapult him to infinite stardom.

Peggy May didn’t dwell on her seemingly difficult draw out in the eight alley and rushed across to score an all the way victory in 30.01. She possesses an abundance of early pace, and on this occasion recorded splits of 4.99 and 17.66. A relative newcomer at Group 1 level, the white speedster has done the majority of her racing on the one-bend provincial circuits, winning 23 of her 37 starts. Raced by Casie O’Neill and trained by Jason Thompson, this famous race is on the Pearcedale trainer’s bucket list.

David Bale has lived in the shadows of kennelmates, megastars Radley Bale, Shireen Bale and Tonneli Bale, all successful at Group 1 level. Whilst the walk down retirement road won’t be easy for Radley Bale, the gallant fawn chaser is soon to call an end to his wonderful career. And now is an appropriate time for second-stringers like David Bale to put their paws up and take up the challenge to emulate the deeds of these three brilliant sprinters. “Dave” gets his chance after taking full advantage of the cherry alley in his 29.83 heat win, and rarely moves off the rail in his races.

Gordon Bale will be hoping to emulate his sire Velocette, who was successful in landing the 2009 Australian Cup for long-time mates, Graeme Bate and Ron McCullagh. This youngster has taken a particular liking to The Meadows and notched his seventh win over the 525 metres trip in 29.77, clocking 5.00 and 17.65 at the checkpoints.

Soda Boy came out running in his heat and speared through the first split in 5.09 before hitting the second mark in the back straight in 17.88. The Silver Chief finalist maintained his momentum and went to the line in 30.09, slicing .01 off his previous 30.10 PB. Raced by Danny Mizzi and trained at Tanjil South by Peter Giles, this light fawn sprinter does his best racing when drawn close to the rail.

Perth Cup winner, Oaks Road was an eye-catching close fourth behind Radley Bale in the Group 1 The Temlee, then followed that gutsy run with a another come from behind victory, running down By Starlight in 29.89. The Bob Payne winner at Wentworth Park in late December, Oaks Road has held his fitness and form, going through the Perth Cup series undefeated. The well bred son of Spiral Nikita and Leprechaun Pace is raced by Eddie Kingswell and trained by Mark Gatt.

Zara Zulu had first crack at a very quick Broadmeadows circuit and hummed out in front, registering fast splits of 4.95 and 17.54 before holding her rivals at bay to score a runaway 29.75 win, which was later equalled by Dyna Tron. Raced by renowned studmaster, Geoff Collins and trained by Ros Hume, Zara Zulu was one of the finds of the recent Group 1 National Futurity series at The Gardens, winning a heat in 29.61 before finding trouble in the final won by Midnight Capers.

MAJOR MILESTONE! Major McCheese won the first race at Shepparton on Monday to become the 100th pink winner of the 2012 Go The Pink Dog! campaign taking the total raised for the McGrath Foundation to $50,000. The milestone came amidst a huge day for the pink dog that saw an amazing 10 winners across Victoria and Tasmania. This took the total raised to $52,500 with two days of the campaign remaining. Greyhound Racing Victoria and Tasrac ing a re aiming for $65,000 by the end of February, to help raise funds for McGrath Breast Care Nurses across Australia.

N o to r io u s ly s l ow breaker, Lacomare motors home when the race is virtually over, and rattled home behind Audacious Elle in a Cup heat.

Allen Hertz, a regular at this elite high level, was working home hard in his heat until baulked at the top turn. Loves this venue and his honesty is reflected with five wins and six placings over this trip. Rarely runs a bad race.

A LIGHTNING FAST surface was prepared by Cory Hiscock and his team for last weekend’s Australian Cup heats over 525 metres at The Meadows, and it was in the opening round that Zara Zulu, a National Fu-turity finalist, ran the quickest sec-tions.

A $10.70 chance on SuperTAB at boxrise, Zara Zulu showed immense early pace in the white vest to clock 4.95 a lap out, holding a three lengths break on Wy Yung Tiger and Dyna Bert.

With a wing on each paw, the Bunyip kennelled daughter of Mogambo and Zulu Zepha had stretched her advantage to four lengths, completing the next phase in 17.54 with the race as good as over.

Although Dyna Bert tried to catch up, the Ros Hume prepared, Geoff Collins owned speedster won by five lengths in equal Best Of Night 29.75, while Tonneli Bale railed through into third place.

Zara Zulu, who’s previous PB was a modest 30.62, has now notched two of four starts on the track, whilst career-wise her CV shows seven wins and three placings after 14 outings.

DYNA TRON ran 29.75 when taking out another Cup heat.

Extra smart, the ‘Team Dilly’ trained racer came from the seven alley and nosed-out Defrim Bale in 5.05 early on, before kicking clear along the back.

After pausing the timer at 17.73, the Brendan Wheeler owned red brin-dle dog was unrelenting in his quest for victory, going on to beat the luck-less Allen Hertz by a length, with Defrim Bale next past the post.

APPRECIATING the two trap, Gordon Bale was another that led from go to whoa in an Australian Cup heat.

Trained by Graeme Bate, the Paul Wheeler owned son of Velocette and Saffron Bale ran his rivals ragged, scoring by almost five lengths to Mepunga Geordie in 29.77, with a neck to third placed Aston Elle.

Gordon Bale, a winner of 11 races from 21 attempts, went into the race with a 30.12 PB.

NSW greyhound, Oaks Road con-tinues to hold his form and proved too good for his well performed rivals in another of the Cup heats.

Raced by Eddie Kingswell, the Mark Gatt trained sprinter rode an early check but once he spotted the bunny, was always the one to beat.

Although By Starlight ran solid splits of 5.07 and 17.68, she didn’t have an answer to Oaks Road’s whirl-wind finish.

The son of Spiral Nikita and Lep-rechaun Pace, who’d recently landed the Bob Payne series final and the Perth Cup, scored by a length and a quarter to Bubba’s Dream in 29.89, with By Starlight third.

Recent winners Prince Holyfield and Radley Bale found plenty of bother in transit and never threatened, finishing last and second last respec-tively.

Oaks Road, who opened his ac-count at The Meadows, has 15 wins and 15 placings from 39 raceday ap-pearances.

After coming from across ‘the ditch’, Thrilling Quest recorded 34.55 and effortlessly annexed the Macro Meats Grade 5.

From the seven alley at the 600 metres ‘bend’ start, Thrilling Quest got away fast but couldn’t match it with Emotion Princess, who clocked 9.03 and led them along the back.

With the pacesetter showing signs of slowing, Thrilling Quest zoomed up and took over.

After handing in a 22.27 section, the Gary Harding owned chaser showed her class.

Trained at Tirau by Karen Walsh, the daughter of Hallucinate and Thrilling Faith proved far too classy, saluting the judge four lengths clear of the hard railing He’s My Future and third placed Emotion Princess.

SHIMAGUNI was viewed by most as the one to beat in a heat of the Macro Meats Superstayers series and duly scored.

But the win came with a few heart palpitations for those who pro-cured the $1.70 on offer, as the extra smart stayer was headed by Full Cir-cle mid-race.

Trained at Anakie by ‘Team Dailly’ for the SGC Syndicate, the honest daughter of Primo Uno and Messines notched her fifth win from six starts over the half-mile journey at the Broadmeadows layout.

In a thrilling triangular finish, Shimaguni defeated Thrilling Brat by a half head in 42.76, while there was a head to third placed Full Circle.

RED HOT ANDY made it three from four at the track when taking out the other round in 42.91.

By Andy Palmer from Redburst, the Wayne Vassallo trained rising four year-old came from midfield early and caught the early leader, Be-fitting in the back straight.

With plenty of trouble occurring on the final bend, Red Hot Andy

scored by over tree lengths to the fast finishing Echelon, while Befitting was next across the line.

It was the 16th success from 59 outings for the Leo Dahl owned Red Hot Andy. On Saturday evening, with two rich finals highlighting a mammoth card of frenetic chasing, all roads will lead to The Meadows.

THE MEADOWS

Geoff Collins with his flyer, Zara Zulu, who ran slick splits and was strong at the finish in her Australian Cup heat, clocking equal BON 29.75.

70 BITCHES IN THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS

SMART SPRINTER, Penny’s Angel will head to Sydney this week to embark on a campaign that will hopefully see him con-test the Golden Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park at the end of next month. The talented bitch has been racing in great form of late and deserves his chance to mix-it with the best in Australia. Penny’s Angel also played his role in the plan to raise $65,000 for the McGrath Foun-dation when he gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the Helen Aitchison Invitation over 461 metres at Hobart last week. He was pitted against a qual-ity field, including Rewind, who was recently voted Tasmania’s 2011 Greyhound Of The Year. Rewind was sent out the $1.20 favourite while Penny’s Angel was one of the outsiders at $33.90, which was in some way disrespectful to a dog that has been so competitive at the top level of late.. It was a keenly contested affair with reserve runner, Hel-lyeah Stella jumped from box four to be the early leader, with pressure coming from Lika Whis-per and Rewind, who was push-ing up along the fence nearing the top turn, whilst Penny’s An-gel was close-up but the widest runner. When the leaders bunched approaching the home turn, Penny’s Angel swooped on the lead and kicked clear.

He had a big enough break to hold out Rewind and Hellyeah Stella in the run to the line. Rewind did get dragged down from behind nearing the home turn, so his effort was full of merit, given the circumstances. It was Penny’s Angel’s sev-enth win on the track from 13 outings, and his 13th career win, with the winner’s cheque taking his stakes tally to almost $30.000. “Ï was very happy with the effort to win this race but I thought it was a silly price be-cause he wasn’t a 33/1 chance,” Penney said. “But I’m not complaining, although I’d like those odds every time he goes around.” The win also added another $500 to the total being raised by Greyhound Racing Victoria and Tasracing for the McGrath Foun-dation, as part of the ‘Go The Pink Dog’ promotion. Penny confirmed he will take a small team of three to Sydney with the hope of qualifying all three for heats of three Easter Egg. “It’s not easy to get into the Easter Egg series because I’ll have to get my team qualified through preludes starting next week,” Penny said. Penny’s Angel’s travelling

companions for the trip to Syd-ney will be his litter sisters Clyde’s Angel and Miss Roman Nose Both have great credentials, although Clyde’s Angel is argua-bly the pick if the trio. Clyde’s Angel scored a sen-sational win in the Devonport Cup Consolation final in which Penny’s Angel was runner-up. Neither bitch has raced since February 14 and will be kept fresh for their assault on the Easter Egg prelude process in Sydney.

Bolter’s quinella PARK BEACH trainer, Darren Critchley has not been a regular visitor to the winner’s circle in recent times, but the drought was broken at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night. Critchley’s lightly raced pup, Greysynd Merry scored an upset win at odds of almost 70/1 when she chased down tearaway leader, Shining Lomar to score by a nose, much to the dismay of most punters. Shining Lomar, from the Leon Brazendale kennel, also was at bolter’s odds starting at $50. Greysynd Merry may have been a despised outsider in bet-ting but the bitch went onto the race on the back of a much-improved effort at her previous outing when third to Bearville Phil at the same venue a week earlier. The winner’s time of 26.84 over the 461 metres trip was hardly exciting, but it was the

way the daughter of Path To Power went about chasing down the leader that impressed most, suggesting she is heading in the right direction. T h o s e w h o f a n c i e d Critchley’s bitch would have been rolling in money, as the exotic bet types paid enormous, with the Exacta returning $1235 on SuperTAB, which was only a few dollars less than what the trifecta paid.

Tommy tunes up PROMISING DOG, Tommy Teeko sounded a warning that he could be a serious chaser after powering home to win the The Mercury Juvenile over 461 me-tres at Hobart’s Tattersall’s Park. Tommy Teeko began fairly from box three but could not match the speed of Ready To Rock, who bounded away from his rivals to hold a decent break on the home turn. But when Tommy Teeko knuckled down to his task in the home straight, he hauled in the leader and went on to score by two lengths from Ready To Rock. with Wongawilli Jimmy over seven lengths astern. Tommy Teeko (Knocka Nor-ris - Charming Miss), prepared by Russell Watts, was having his sixth start in the state. The dog was sent to Watts at the end of last year and opened his Tasmanian account with a handy second to Big Poppy Jack in a qualifying heat of the Hobart Maiden Thousand series. He struck trouble at his sub-sequent outing in a Maiden Thousand semi-final, but has gone on to win two of his next four starts. Last Thursday night Tommy Teeko covered the 461 metres in 26.38, which was comparable to the Best Of Night 26.21 recorded by Penny’s Angel in the Invita-tion.

Tassie

Peter

Staples

Terry Penny with Penny's Angel after she’d beaten a top class field at Hobart last Thursday night.

After passing the early pacesetter, Ready To Rock, Tommy Teeko went on to beat the chaser by an ever-widening gap, running Best Of Night 26.18 over 461 metres in a Juvenile event last week.

PAUL FELGATE is in virtual grey-hound racing retirement, but the for-mer leading trainer can still churn out a Group performer.

He did that last Thursday night at Ipswich when his exciting young bitch, Brook Lee, royally bred by Brett Lee out of Miss Brook, led throughout in the 520 metres Group 2 Vince Curry Maiden final.

Paul bred and raced her mother, champion stayer, Miss Brook, who herself had been a finalist in the Vince Curry as a puppy.

These days Paul is happy to just breed a couple of pups out of Miss Brook, and let others do the training. That is the case with Brook Lee, who is trained by 23 year-old Chris-tina Apap.

Brook Lee scored by two lengths over Run Bolt Run, with a length and a quarter to Harry The Great third, clocking 30.78 to remain unbeaten in her only four starts.

She is the first Vince Curry win-ner to go through the series unbeaten since Vizcaya in 2005.

It was a case of third time lucky for the Apap family that have had Vince Curry finalists for the past three years.

Sky Hardy in 2010 and Spindle in 2011 were unplaced.

The Apaps were confident that the bitch would go close to winning, despite the presence of boom Victo-rian bitch, Aston Carmelita, the hot favourite.

“We have been working on a back problem with her all week,” said

Christina after the win. “She has never felt better, and we thought she would be improved for the final.”

Brook Lee began sensationally from the seven box to lead through a 5.46 first section.

It was enough to open a break on another royally bred pup, Harry The Great (Where’s Pedro – Queen Lauryn).

Christina’s father, Tony also has a share in the ownership of Harry The Great.

Into the back straight, Run Bolt Run took off after the leader and raced into second to make a race of the final.

But Brook Lee held her ground through a 12.08 final section and that was enough to annex the $40,000 to the winner final.

Felgate could not attend the final but Tony Apap’s phone rang the mo-ment Brook Lee hit the finish line in front.

It was Felgate basking in the glory of a Vince Curry victory once again.

Paul’s other champion, Just The Best had won the Vince Curry in 1999.

In an interesting coincidence, third placegetter, Harry The Great was celebrating his second birthday on final night, and Brook Lee turned two the following day.

“We reared the pair of them to-gether,” said Jane Apap, Tony’s wife and Christina’s proud mum.

Auction target SPEEDY BITCH, Country will aim to emulate, and hopefully improve upon her mum’s record when she lines up in the upcoming Ipswich Auction series. Peter Hay, who part-owns the bitch with wife, Jill, the dog’s trainer, said this last Thursday night after Country (Give Me Five - Just Coun-try) had led throughout to land the 520 metres Vince Curry Maiden Con-solation in 30.90.

She won by eight and a half lengths over Have Agogo, with two and a half lengths to third placed Tayla Marie.

Country is one of four pups from former Ipswich 431 metres specialist, Just Country, the winner of 17 races.

“We lost four of the litter at whelping,” said Peter. “The other three can all run as well.”

Peter rates Country better than her mother.

“She can run 520 metres,” he said. “Her mother could get it, but we decided to keep her to 431 metres.”

Just Country was a finalist in the Ipswich Auction herself, winning a

heat by 10 lengths in 30.90. But she struggled to run out the

distance strongly. Country struggles after her races

over 520 metres. “She gets the wobbly boot on

after she races,” said Peter. “It takes her a few minutes to recover.”

Country ran a brilliant 30.54 to win a quarter-final of the Vince Curry series and then was a good third be-hind Brook Lee in a semi-final.

She was second reserve for the rich Group 2 final.

The Hays have had great success at Ipswich, as they raced Ima Design, the Greyhound Of The Year two years ago, and Awesome Design, the winner of the Ipswich Auction in 2003.

IPSWICH has been conducting Saturday afternoon non TAB meetings in recent weeks, due to Capalaba being closed.

Recent flood damage at Ca-palaba GRC has been signifi-cant... and it’s an ongoing prob-lem whenever south-east Queen-sland receives extremely heavy rainfall.

Adjoining the suburb of Ca-palaba is the Leslie Harrison Dam, which services that area’s water needs.

When the dam level is near-ing full, water is released to a path that includes the Capalaba greyhound track.

The authorities alert the grey-hound club and others who will be affected, in time to remove some items to higher ground.

This notice is not lengthy, as the water release can become necessary within a day or two.

When the water is released, the greyhound track and buildings become flooded, even if some equipment is safely stashed on top of tables, etc.

Control body, Racing Queen-sland has decided that repair work will continue at the Capalaba track, subject to RQ’s insurers approving the estimate of damage costs caused by the recent flood.

RQ participated in a meeting with SEQ Water two weeks ago.

The object of the meeting was to ensure that SEQ Water had a comprehensive understanding of the continual flooding in the re-gion and to discuss options to limit the frequency of these events and volume of water that inundates the infrastructure.

RQ deemed the meeting as “productive”, and negotiations are continuing.

My understanding has always been that, if water isn’t released from the Leslie Harrison dam as it nears a capacity, and if the dam overflows, the damage to proper-ties and infrastructure would be more widespread than what oc-curs with the controlled release of water.

The Capalaba greyhound

track is on low lying ground adja-cent to Tingalpa Creek, which is a tidal waterway.

When there is heavy rainfall and the dam and the creek both fill up, flooding is inevitable.

Combine heavy rain with high or king tides and it’s a dou-ble whammy effect on the grey-hound track.

RQ hopes to have Capalaba back racing next month.

In the meantime, Ipswich will continue to race on Saturday af-ternoons right through this month.

The recent meetings have attracted plenty of nominations, with nine or ten races.

So, does Capalaba have a future as a greyhound track?

Flooding there is nothing new, it’s just that the past couple of floods have been devastating.

I remember calling a meeting at Capalaba back in 1989.

The day started with a slightly damp track, heavy rain occurred and, combined with a very high tide, the area in front of the starting boxes flooded within about 20 minutes.

The meeting was called off. The point is, not a lot has

changed in the past 23 years. A straight racing track is nice

to have, as it caters for grey-hounds returning from injury and those that don’t handle circle tracks.

But New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania don’t have any straight racing, and get by without it.

I would say that Capalaba will return, but one more big flood and that could be curtains.

Pure economics might dictate that money, which could be used for prizemoney elsewhere, can no longer be spent on repairing flood damage.

Even if the insurers pay up, there’s still a significant cost in manpower, etc., in getting the place back in business.

Make it happen! THE GREYHOUND (and har-ness) track at Albion Park is in a flood zone.

So too is Rockhampton. But what can you do? Nothing. Or realistically, nothing short

of relocating to higher ground. If Brisbane’s greyhound

headquarters moves from Albion Park to Logan, as is promised by Racing Queensland, and the “in limbo” State Government, flood-ing shouldn’t be a problem… EVER!

I drive past Cronulla Park at Underwood in Logan City several times a week because I live on that side of town.

Even during our heaviest times of rain there is no flooding there.

It’s a higher part of that sub-urb of Underwood.

Some suburbs of Brisbane are notorious for flooding, but Under-wood isn’t one of them.

There is a Queensland elec-tion on March 24.

The opinion polls aren’t al-ways right, of course, but suggest strongly that there will be a change of government, with the LNP taking over.

The current state Labor Gov-ernment recently signed off on a $24 million financing deal for a new greyhound headquarters at Cronulla Park.

I’m told that is a binding agreement, which the incoming government must abide by.

Let’s hope such is the case. A brand new complex with

two tracks, including a much needed one-turn circuit (no horses to compete with) that’s fully paid for by the Government.

Am I dreaming? Consider this It’s expensive to be poor.

KEIRON BUTLER has been around greyhounds long enough to know what a good one looks like.

He reckons he’s got a good one in promising youngster. Arc-tic Blitz.

Last Thursday night Arctic Blitz (Bit Chili - Miss Maniko) led throughout to win a Novice over 520 metres at Ipswich in 31.10, scoring by four and a quar-ter lengths over Dodgy Bob, with a length and three quarters to Cir-cus Boy third.

Arctic Blitz will be given a

couple of weeks off by Butler and then be prepared for the Ipswich Auction Series.

Butler raced the dog’s mother, Miss Maniko, a Bearabil-ity bitch who ran 19.70 when winning at Capalaba, which was then the fastest ever by a bitch up the straight track.

“I gave the bitch to Des Heil-bronn to breed with, and I was always to get a dog pup from the litter,” said Keiron.

“This is the dog from her first mating.”

Butler is confident that his

dog will develop into a handy performer, if only he can fix his box manners.

“If I could get him to jump, he could be something,” said Kei-ron.

The dog began well and was never in doubt when he led.

Butler purposely skipped the Vince Curry Consolation with his dog. “If he won the Consolation he loses a couple of races,” said Kei-ron, “so I decided that the Novice suited better.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S timeslot last week belonged to the Dapto meeting, with a couple of handy win-ners emanating from the good card of racing and they should be worth fol-lowing in the weeks ahead. In an exciting finish, the Andy Lord trained Asterix arrived in the nick of time to win the Tuiaki @ Stud Stake over 520 metres. When the lids opened it was the rails runner, Cool At Midnight that stepped best, as too did the popular fancy, Mingle, who was sporting the yellow vest.

Asterix was on the next line and from her box two she slotted in be-hind the two leaders heading into the

first turn. They broke away from the others down the back, with favourite backers on very good terms with themselves.

Coming down the side, despite Cool At Midnight still leading, it was Mingle that was closing the gap and Asterix was also hanging around in third spot.

Turning for home Cool At Mid-night ran wide, allowing Mingle to push through, however, there was also room for Asterix to get closer to the fence.

Heading towards the line, Mingle was being acclaimed the winner, but it was Asterix that drove her tiny 27kg frame hard along the paint.

In the shadows of the post Asterix drew up and put her noggin out right on the line, getting the judge’s verdict by a half head over Mingle, with Cool At Midnight holding on for third, one and a quarter lengths back. In winning her second race at the Dogdome, Asterix recorded a new PB 30.18.

Asterix, from a fairly successful litter of Collision and Ate Bucks, is owned by a group of punters headed by well known thoroughbred form guru, Clinton Payne.

The guys are having a lot of fun at present with this tiny chaser, who’s had just four starts for two wins and one placing.

Mingle (Go Wild Teddy x Nikita Grove), trained by Bill Bates, has produced two wins and two placings from five starts, whilst Cool At Mid-night (Big Daddy Cool x Midnight Miss) has notched three wins and nine placings from 20 career starts for trainer, David Ruse.

KEEP AN EYE on Kool Brock, who has his share of ability but at the Dogdome had not always had the best of results.

The son of Big Daddy Cool made it 10 career wins when taking out the Swift Fancy @ Stud Stake after lead-ing most of the way. Boxrise saw Kool Brock moder-ately away from the three trap, while Maldini Lad out of box two and Olay Zara from box six were best served.

Gathering pace quickly, Kool Brock was able to make it a line of three out of the straight, and with the aid of the inside position, she put her head in front as they raced to the back. By the top corner Kool Brock had broken clear, with Half Empty running on from back in the field and Maldini Lad was next.

Maintaining those positions down the running, Kool Brock hit the line two and a half lengths ahead of Half Empty in in a new PB 30.18, with Maldini Lad a further two lengths

away third. Kool Brock (x Biddyken Lass), trained by Andrew Drapiewski, from 47 career starts has collected 10 wins and nine placings.

Half Empty (Over Flo x Nova Lira), trained by Simon Gafa, has had 11 starts with two wins and five plac-ings, whilst the Caroline Psilos pre-pared Maldini Lad (Droopys Maldini x She’s Polished) after 20 raceday outings has three wins and five plac-ings on his scorecard.

SIMPLY SWEET gave the im-pression that she should get the half-mile trip following her strong finish-ing burst to claim the Dapto Swish And Swash Stake over 600 metres. Simply Sweet was in the back half of the field in early stages but gradually worked her way through the pack.

She easily accounted for tearaway leader, Murrumboola in a handy 35.03. They drew clear of their rivals, with Simply Sweet defeating Mur-rumboola by three quarters of a length and Dynamic Shiraz wound up third, a further four and three quarter lengths adrift. By Hallucinate from Charm For-ever, owned and trained by Joe For-mosa, Simply Sweet has had 38 ca-reer starts that have yielded five wins and 12 placings.

Murrumboola (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Token Whiz), prepared by Craig Moffitt, has contested 14 races for three wins and six placings, whilst David Sundstrom’s Dynamic Shiraz (Bombastic Shiraz x Tarhooley Doo-ley) after 75 career starts has gathered six wins and 20 placings.

KAILUA BAY notched a classy victory at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Bosco Stamenkovic trained chaser took out the Adelaide Galvanising Grade 5 feature final. A second placegetter behind Mate’s Honour in a heat a week earlier, Kailua Bay was sent to box six at $5.00 behind $3.50 equal favourites, Piruz Bale and Mate’s Honour in a very even field. Although poorly drawn, Kailua Bay began nicely and showed great determi-nation to cross the field, holding the early lead over Mate’s Honour and Piruz Bale through the first turn. In front by half length to Mate’s Hon-our along the back straight, Kailua Bale inched away and reached the top turn with a one length break. Stretching the lead to a couple of lengths through the final bend, with Mate’s Honour trying hard to bridge the gap, Kailua Bay proved too strong.

Although Naveed Bale flashed home for second, the daughter of Surf Lorian and Lapras crossed the line three and a half lengths clear of Naveed Bale in 30.21, with Mate’s Honour a close third. Kailua Bay took her record to 14 wins and 11 placings from 44 career starts.

JOHNNY WILL grabbed his fifth win from his past six starts when he gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the Colonel Light Meat & Smallgoods Mixed 2nd/3rd/4th Grade at Angle Park last Thursday night.

Trained by Petar Jovanovic and exit-ing the three alley as a $2.35 chance behind favourite Goosebumps ($2.30), Johnny Will jumped cleanly and mustered speed to hold the early lead over Buckar-inga Lad through the first turn. Slipping away from Buckaringa Lad to lead by three lengths in the back straight, Johnny Will was showing his rivals a clean set of paws and reached the top turn with a four lengths break. Rounding the final bend with his lead extended to six lengths over Buckaringa

Lad, Johnny Will showed no signs of stopping. The son of Spiral Nikita and Lepre-chaun Pace had seven and a half lengths to spare over Buckaringa Lad, clocking a new personal best and Best Of Night 29.63, while Pint’s Delight finished third. A winner of 10 races from just 17 career starts, Johnny Will was injured pulling up in the catching pen, with the vet demanding a 10 day stand down. Jess is good enough ONLY JESS bounced back to winning form at Angle Park last Thursday night when successful in the National Union of Workers Free For All for trainer, Angela Modra. Donning the white vest and starting at $6.50, Only Jess was away only fairly and was checked early to be seventh through the first turn behind early leader, Allen Chang. Railing into sixth and blocked for a run in the back straight, Only Jess was looking for a way through traffic as she improved into fifth place at the top turn, only four lengths behind the front running Allen Chang. Taking a split to move through into fourth spot through the final bend, Only Jess finished powerfully in the run home.

After swamping Allen Chang over the closing stages, the daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Brooklyn Rain won by a length and a half in 30.65, with Daelan Bale holding down third place.

Hurley burly SIX HEATS of the time honoured St. Leger series were run at Angle Park last Thursday. with the first four runners past the post making their way through to this week’s semi-finals.

CAPTAIN COMBAT upset race fa-vourite, Jessenia Bale when he won the first heat for trainer, John McMillan. Wearing the pink singlet and starting as a $9.00 chance, Captain Combat raced to the lead through the first turn and held Jessenia Bale at bay throughout, passing the post one and a half lengths clear in 30.12, with My Little Star third.

KOOMBOOYANA GIRL recorded her third successive win for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic when she took out heat two. Nicely drawn in box one at $2.90, Koombooyana Girl won the start and led throughout, scoring by five lengths to the fast finishing Cambrian Rock in a new personal best 30.03, with Lektra Train in third place.

EVA’S FLAME brought up a strong win for trainer, Don Turner when success-ful in the next heat. An $8.80 chance from box eight, who was up against series favourite, Victa Troy, Eva’s Flame settled down second behind early leader, Darren Bale, and gained the ascendancy in the closing stages, scoring by a length to Darren Bale in 30.38, with Victa Troy third.

CURLWAA HOPE registered his fourth career win for trainer, Sharyn Gray when he took out heat four. Starting at $16.70 from box five, Curl-waa Hope settled down midfield but stormed home over the closing stages to swamp Buddy Magician and score by a length in 30.27, with Emerley Cliona a close third.

EMERLEY STRIKER showed his best form for trainer, Peter Hurley when won heat five over favourite, Hope’s Up. Drawn box five and returning “overs”

at $20.20, Emerley Striker bounded straight to the front and defied Hope’s Up throughout, winning by a neck in Best Of Day and new personal best 29.96, while Jason Bale held down third place.

DEADLY IMPACT maintained his good strike rate for trainer, Petar Jovano-

vic when he won the sixth and final heat of the St. Leger. Rated a $6.90 chance from box eight, Deadly Impact settled down third and stormed home to beat early leader, High Crimes by a length in 30.23, with Eira Bale third.

Hanson Senor was joined by his mentor, Geoff Allen (centre) and ardent fans Terry Hines and Michael Sherlock after the son of Give Me Five and Hanson Charm had taken out the 520 metres RQL Young Guns final by a nose in 30.36.

A HUGE CROWD turned out at Shelbourne on Saturday night and they were treated to an-other master class effort by Milldean Panther as he raced home a four lengths winner of his second round heat in the SIS Live Shelbourne Gold Cup and in the process took his un-beaten career record to 12.

As in the opening round he had to pull out the stops to assert in what was a high-class contest, but what his two initial all-aged out-ings have shown is that, in golfing parlance, he can scramble just as effectively as he can ruthlessly dominate his rivals.

He came away better than last week but still didn’t make a flyer from the inside trap, and it was Razldazl Will that led up on the outside from Millbank and Cian Abbey.

But Millbank Powers showed an impres-sive burst of speed to challenge into the bend.

On the corner the determined Milldean bumped Millbank, which in turn crashed into Razldazl and Cian Abbey.

Suddenly the race was as good as over as Milldean moved into the back with a lead of two and a half lengths from Uncle Eoin, which had avoided the melee in front of him, whilst Noirs Buachaill was now in third.

Milldean now displayed his strength and pace as he raced on to win by four lengths from Uncle Eoin in 29.60, with Noirs Buachaill some three lengths back in third.

The unlucky Razldazl Will lost out on qualifying by a length.

John O’Flynn Snr reported yesterday that Milldean “is quite tired again. He hasn’t

reached full race fitness yet but, apart from a little scrape on his leg, he looks fine, and will be back bouncing in a day.”

With Cabra Noel an absentee in the opening heat it became a five-dog race and the near-veteran, Broadstrand Lad produced another excellent run.

The story is easily related as the John Linehan trained Broadstrand Lad flew out of the two box and led up from Ohio Rumble.

Broadstrand Lad was three in front on the second bend and went on to win by two and a half lengths from strong running Slick Seattle in 29.62, with Ohio Rumble another four lengths third.

The shock of the night was the elimination of Rockchase Bullet from the third heat, where his tendency to see an inside line brought his downfall, as it had in last year’s Irish Derby final.

He went into the bend just ahead of Mines A Pint and Piercestown Sand but was badly baulked and dropped out of contention.

Now Mines A Pint led but was passed by Piercestown before Tibetan Skies arrived with a rush into the third bend.

Tibetan looked to be through the inside gap but he crucially checked and Piercestown Sand now shot ahead.

Seamus Whelan’s Masters winner was strong up the straight as he won by a length and a half in 30.05.

Tibetan Skies ran into Mines A Pint on the run-in and Fastaway King finished fast to grab second spot ahead of Mines A Pint.

Peter Cronin’s Irish Derby finalist, Rock-view Head showed the benefit of last week’s initial race of the season as he won the final heat in 29.79.

He flew from traps and led into the back by three lengths from Airforce Roger and Slip-pery Patch.

He was still clear turning for home, but Airforce then produced a big challenge and only a short head separated them at the line, with Castlelyons Ralf grabbing the third spot.

Milldean Panther’s highly rated kennel companion, Dear Pa made his seasonal reap-pearance in an open 525 and performed well when winning in 28.76.

After fluffing the start slightly, Dear Pa moved up very smartly to go round fast start-ing Brickfield Lee into the bend.

He was chased down the back by Noirs Magician, but Cashen Mafuma was to be the final challenger. The latter went second around the final bend and failed by just half a length to catch Dear Pa in a very closely battled finish, with Noirs Magician another half length third.

Fastest over the 525 distance on the night was Seamus Graham’s Swift Marathon as he led all the way in 28.47, while there was an-other smart effort from Paul Hennessy’s Bare-foot Missile as he ran away with an A1 semi-final in 28.58.

Semi-final draw: HEAT 1: 1 Mines A Pint; 2 Broadstrand Lad; 3 Castlelyons Ralf; 4 Milldean Panther; 5 Noirs Buachaill (w); 6 Uncle Eoin (w) HEAT 2: 1 Airforce Roger; 2 Fastaway King; 3 Ohio Rumble; 4 Piercestown Sand; 5 Slick Seattle; 6 Rockview Head Fahy buys Cabra Noel CHARLIE LISTER’S chance of a seventh English Derby triumph received a massive boost on Saturday when P J Fahy purchased highly rated Irish tracker, Cabra Noel, and revealed afterwards that the dog will be joining Lister for a crack at the Wimbledon classic.

Fahy said, “I first tried to buy him before Christmas and finally got him on Saturday.”

“I decided not to run him at Shelbourne but to get him across to Charlie as early as possible so that he can have a good few trials around Wimbledon and possibly a race or two also.”

Cabra Noel, a son of Premier Fantasy and Cabra Midget, was a strong fancy to win the National Puppy Stake at Shelbourne last December.

The January 2010 whelp has a best time of 28.41 around Shelbourne and would appear to be the ideal type of dog for Wimbledon.

Fahy has previously had a number of dogs with Lister, and would love to have a decent crack at winning the English classic to go with his two Irish Derby successes. The plan would be for the dog to come back to Fahy after the Wimbledon event to be prepared for an Irish Derby challenge.

Ireland’s pin-up boy, Milldean Panther, formerly known as Bellmore Panther, with Clive Francis. The black speedster still remains unbeaten on the Shamrock Isle, notching his 12th consecutive win on the weekend. The current track record holder for 525 metres at Shelbourne Park, the famous Dublin venue, Milldean Panther is a son of Irish Derby winner College Causeway (Go Wild Teddy - College Tina) and Auld Nag (Spiral Nikita - Slippy Dilemma).

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, March 1st, 2012 – Page 57NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Champion effort SOMETIMES we tend to over-use the word “champion”, and sadly when we do that we tend to take away ‘that special moment’ when we do see a champion perform the seemingly impossible.

If the word “champion” wasn’t appli-cable to Radley Bale before The Temlee, it definitely was apt afterwards.

Just trying to put this altogether is quite difficult.

Okay, so we’ll start at the start. We had a four year-old dog with 97

starts to his name invited into a Group 1 event that was up against seven of the nation’s best sprinters.

Gee, already that sounded rather difficult.

After a reasonable getaway, Radley Bale was outpaced, was in bother and almost fell in the straight the first time.

I guess in the minds of many, that was ‘race over’ for Radley Bale at that point.

Now in front was Mystic Apple, who has the reputation that no dog can come from behind him and beat him once he’s on the lure.

He was being seriously challenged by another dog with an almost identical reputation, Glen Gallon, and you don’t expect dogs that are behind him in the run to beat him home.

I would think that no matter how gen-erous the odds were at the half-way point, and armed with all that knowledge, you’d want to back Radley Bale to win… not even with borrowed money.

On the home turn, where he’d pro-gressed to third and for a fleeting moment looked like he was going to hook out, in your wildest dreams you wouldn’t have expected him to beat the two in front of him home, with third place being his best option.

And you’d then all say that was a marvellous effort to finish so close.

However, with age also comes wis-dom, and Radley Bale decided the only way he could beat these two was to try to come through on the rail, even though

there didn’t look like there was enough room for a run there.

Displaying qualities that only true champions have, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Minkara Bale forced his way through on the paint to claim the other pair and got the judge’s pat in a photo finish.

Things like passing a half a million dollars in prizemoney or moving to third on the all- time stakemoney table seemed insignificant right there and then.

And the roar from the crowd on-course nearly said it all.

This dog had just won… and won where very few if any other dog could have.

I was talking to his trainer, Graeme Bate on the Sunday morning, and he told me without a doubt that this was one of the biggest thrills he’s ever had in racing.

We started talking about just how good a win it was, and Graeme pondered, was it better than Kantarn Bale’s Warrnambool Cup?

I think Radley Bale’s win was in a harder race, but I suppose he’s been racing all along without a break, so he was as race-fit as can be.

Kantarn Bale, who was a well-documented three-legged cripple, had been retired and had only just come back to racing.

The similarities in the wins were that both dogs finished hard along the rail from seemingly impossible situations to score, and both dogs ran down dogs that you just didn’t expect to see run down.

In Kantarn Bale’s case it was Mag-namize, a dog that won 51 races.

Kantarn Bale was a champion. Anyhow, which is the better run? Well, to call one better than the other

would be terribly unfair, so Radley Bale’s Temlee win was no better or no worse than Kantarn Bale’s second Warrnambool Cup.

Radley Bale now needs $40,558 to break High Earner’s Australian stake-money record, and $11,843 to move to second place ahead of El Grand Senor.

With the Australian Cup and Golden Easter Egg just around the corner, the odds must be in Radley Bale’s favour to claim the record. Stroll in the park ALL EYES were on Miata in The Zoom Top for her first Victorian start, and it turned into a stroll in the park for the champion Western Australian stayer.

When she came up with box one, it really seemed a mere formality for the Paul Stuart trained galloper.

Still, despite all the boxes ticked in the positive column, she still had to go out there and do it.

After getting out well, she quickly

found the front and then said “ta-ta” to her rivals.

Knowing that she’s really strong at the end of her races, and with an eight lengths lead at the half-way, quite a few were speculating a 20 to 25 lengths win and a new track record.

Actually, it was probably enthusiastic optimism that caused the thought of 20 to 25 lengths against that quality of opposi-tion, as at the end it was seven and three quarter lengths, and how could you not be impressed by that?

The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird never really threatened Nellie Noodles’ track record, but it was her first race start on the track.

And I would think with that run under her belt, she may frighten the record in the upcoming Superstayers series.

An interesting little snippet is that Winsome Bluebird produced the winner of The Zoom Top in 2011, namely Blue Lorian (x Surf Lorian). Lektra-fying NO ONE could or should begrudge Lektra Jay’s win in The Rookie Rebel. He was luckless in the Group 1 Sale Cup on Boxing Day behind Mystic Apple, running sixth, beaten just over two lengths, and then he came from the pink in the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup to run a great third behind Mystic Apple and Strong Intention.

After that he trekked over to Perth for their Group 1 Cup, making the final be-fore finishing a gallant second to Oaks Road.

Looking better suited at The Mead-ows (and over the 600 metres), Lektra Jay does like the pink box, but at this trip and against that quality of dog, it was going to be a rather hard assignment.

When the Andrea Dailly trained chaser got out well and worked wide out to second, it was the dog that beat him home at Cranbourne that was in charge.

Make no mistake, Strong Intention is a top class chaser and certainly one of the country’s best middle distance gallop-ers, and another thing, once he’s in front he’s a real tough dog to pass.

Lektra Jay worked overtime through-out the run, trying to stay with Strong Intention.

In the end, perhaps the fact that he can run a strong 650 metres was the little assist that he needed to claim victory.

That certainly ranks as one of the toughest wins you’ll see, as there was nothing glamorous about it really.

It was just a really hard slog. Lektra Jay is probably an underrated

galloper and many would think just how could have just a tick under $200,000 in prizemoney.

By being a fair bit better than a

“bread and butter” dog, and by tackling the hardest races and getting podium finishes, that’s the reason.

But as I’ve mentioned here before, those who are against a bitch having too many starts, and in their opinion not worth breeding from, should note that Lektra Jay’s dam, Elektra had more than 100 starts.

I rest my case. Lucky I MADE mention last week that selecting interstate dogs as reserves isn’t the wis-est thing to do.

This year, I think it was lucky that the two dogs that were scratched were with-drawn in plenty of time to allow the con-nections of He Knows Uno and Cousin Callum the chance to take their place in their respective fields. So, did the Selection Committee get it right?

Well, in one respect, yes, as neither made it to the podium, however, because they were ninth rated, you could be ex-cused for thinking they should finish last. As it turned out, both ran fifth, so I guess in one sense they did better than some expected them to. But it all boils down to opinions on who should be in and who shouldn’t, and the end result this year was three terrific races. And again, that’s the aim isn’t it… to hopefully put on races in which all the dogs have a claim and to provide enter-tainment with great racing… and that was achieved. NP to G1 I WAS having a look through the elimina-tion heats of the Australian Cup, in par-ticular the winners.

There were three chasers that won in those seven heats that had competed in non-penalty meetings at their previous eight starts. Take It Home won the first heat in 30.42 and he had three NP runs within his previous eight outings.

Audacious Elle won heat three in 29.98 and she had one NP start within her past eight.

And Bubba’s Dream won heat seven in the Best Of Night 29.84 and she also had one run in a NP in her past eight outings.

Maybe that explains why non-penalty races can be so hard to win at times, as you might have been up against a poten-tial Group 1 winner.

Or the other end of the scale could be what I continually preach; your dog can’t win it sitting at home in his kennel.

And Bubba’s Dream might be a great role-model, as after running second from box one at Sandown in a non-penalty 515 metres Grade 5, she landed a Grade 5 at The Meadows over 525 metres before scoring in an elimination heat. How many ONE of the things I ponder each year is just how many of the dogs that contest the elimination heats of the Australian Cup will actually qualify for the final? Quite a few times, the dogs that con-tested those elimination heats couldn’t get near the better performed dogs, whereas some years a few have been more than competitive. I guess if you select 56 dogs from a pool of over 100, there’s probably going to be some that are stiff to miss out. I mean, how much is between 56 and 57? It’s a bit like The Temlee and the TOPGUN, the two reserves, in a lot of people’s eyes, would have been competi-tive if in the final eight. And as we saw a few years ago, Regal Thyme was a reserve for the TOP-GUN and gained a run then wound up being the eventual winner. Therefore, the gap between say 30th in the top 56th and say 90th could be just a matter of opinion. As I said before, you can’t win it if you’re not in it, and even though having to come through the elimination heats makes it harder, sooner or later we’ll have a dog win it that way to prove that it isn’t impossible. Either side YOU have to feel a little bit sorry for Wal-ter Bale. Back on January 24, the son of Hallu-cinate and Kazar Bale ventured to Hor-sham for a 410 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade and scored in 23.24. That just happened to be his 99th

start in a race. Being in-form for start number 100 is a positive way of getting the best chance to join our Centurions Club. Sadly, at Warragul on January 31 in a 400 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade hev found trouble early and came in last, hav-ing been injured during that effort, receiv-ing a 10-day stand down. Trainer, Graeme Bate righted the red fawn sprinter, and on February 18 he trekked on down to Warrnambool for a 390 metres Grade 5 to subsequently score in Best Of Night 22.20 at start num-ber 101. He’ll have to wait another 49 starts now to join the Centurions and a Half club. Toughened up I’VE NOTICED in the past week that Stewards may have toughened up on dogs that continually perform poorly. I saw a dog in the other day that had absolutely terrible form that tailed them in and it received a Satisfactory Trial for its effort, or lack of same. I sincerely doubt it’ll ever get cleared, although having said that, I spotted a dog that had received one for pulling up in a staying race and was cleared by running last in a very short sprint trial. That defies logic. Gee, this dog managed to complete half a lap of a track, which looked to be shorter in distance than what it covered before pulling up in the race where it was pinged.

I do realise that finding a half field for a staying trial might be hard, but in this dog’s case, trialling solo for at least 600 metres, and doing so in a satisfactory manner, as far as commitment in say a fair time, would have seemed more sensi-ble to me. However, some of these dogs with seemingly poor form, on closer inspection you find it reads better than it looks. I did see a dog that hadn’t finished any better than fifth in his past eight runs, but he’d done it from bad boxes and had been beaten in quick times.

I think four were BOD’s and it copped plenty of checks in the run. And on top of that, in all but one race, he’d been in single figure lengths from the winner. That dog is crying out for an ounce of luck and I hope he gets it. Mind you though, if he gets a suitable draw in a suitable race and blows his chance, I’ll be sacking him. I mention this dog only to point out that not all poor form is rotten form, how-ever, I’m still waiting to see “Mr. Beaten Twenty Lengths Each Time” race again. Sadly, I’m still seeing quite often that the two dogs with the best form in the field are numbers 9 and 10. Your Say “The Ace” on the ‘blower’ on Saturday morning: “I haven’t quite worked out who’ll win the three big races as yet but I reckon I have the three that’ll run last, Noble Pedro, Key To Eden and Cape Hawke.” Your reasons were noted, and I tell you what, two out of three ain’t bad...hehe. “Blood Nose” asked, “How many people have received a blood nose whilst stand-ing over a dog waiting to race?” Not me! “The Legend” with, “Radley Bale, that’s the Run of the Year.” It’ll take some tossing for sure. This week’s Teaser Who am I? Historically, I’m the exception to the rule as I’m in a class of one.

In other words, I’ve done what no other greyhound has done and I did it in what at the time was Australia’s greatest Cup race. Luckily, the people in that hugely populous Asian country weren’t into grey-hound racing back then otherwise I might have been enticed to make a journey. My name of two words with the ini-tials “CT” is who? Last week’s answers 1. Miata (or Sure As) 2. Allen Harper 3. Fancy Will 4. Godsend (or Lochinvar Marlow) 5. Radley Bale 6. Shereen Bale 7. Oaks Road 8. Bobby Boucheau

Back injuries The spine has five main components - there are 7 cervical or neck vertebrae, 13 in the thoracic or chest region and 7 lumbar vertebrae bones in the back between the chest cavity and the sacrum, which anchors the pelvis and extends into the coccygeal or tail segments.

The neck is vulnerable to sprain and soft tissue injury, often induced by fight back trials or bullring activity.

Fractures or disc problems are rare, and often neck strain has little effect on the greyhounds running ability.

The vertebrae of the chest cavity are fairly rigidly locked in place by the rib cage.

A diagnosis of a spinal injury in the chest region should be treated with great scepticism unless the greyhound is suffering from complete hind limb paralysis.

The lumbar vertebrae are much more flexible and as a result much more susceptible to injury.

This flexibility and range-of-movement allows the dog to amplify its galloping action, in effect lengthening the range and spring off its hind legs.

In reality, the hind limbs begin at the kidneys, rather than the hips.

There are large groups of muscles supporting and enabling this action, above the vertebra are the longissimus and spinatus groups and below the vertebrae are the large psoas muscles.

These groups alternately contract and relax when the dog is galloping to allow the hind legs to extend their range-of-movement.

Injuries of these large muscle groups are not uncommon… however, they are often not easily detectable.

For example, the muscles of the psoas group are impossible to palpate, since they are enclosed within the abdominal cavity.

Often we can only establish injuries to these muscles by determining whether the range-of-movement of the back has been affected and/or whether there is evidence of spasm of the muscles after a series of manipulations.

Spasm is a natural defence adopted by muscles when they have been bruised, over-stretched or in some other way insulted.

Chiropractic manipulations are a method of relieving muscle spasm, as is acupuncture and also various methods of electro-therapy, such as ultrasound, TENS or muscle contractor.

Chiropractic manipulations are an important routine part of a physical examination, and are not painful, as they simply bring some vital joints to their full range-of-movement with a gentle thrust.

If a dog resents this on a regular basis then it is very likely that the manipulation is being performed incorrectly.

It is also important to realise that the manipulation is not replacing a dislocated bone, it is simply a method amongst many of treating muscle spasm.

Practitioners who believe they are replacing bones into joints, simply do not have a basic understanding of anatomy, joint sprain and muscle strain.

In young greyhounds, the spine of the sixth and especially the seventh lumbar vertebrae can weaken from solid bone to a flexible remnant, which is constantly inflamed and sore.

This develops over a period of weeks and causes local pain in the weakened bone but also, because of the proximity of the inflammation to the ischiatic nerve, there is secondary referred pain down the back of both legs.

These dogs generally show loss of early speed and inconsistent running.

Diagnosis can only be made by physical examination and palpation of the affected bone.

It has not been possible to demonstrate the fracture on an x-ray. And also having a clear x-ray does not rule out the diagnosis.

Older greyhounds, four years and upwards that have had significant racing careers, develop a condition called spondylitis.

It is evident as small bony growths on the bottom corners of the vertebral bones.

Spondylitis is usually a chronic low-grade pain for retired dogs, however, in stud dogs it can lead to decreased libido, and if the pain is present during matings then the stress may have a secondary depressing effect on his fertility.

Page 60 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, March 1st, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

THE FORM from the heats of the Macro Meats Novice over 595 metres stacked up when the three fastest qualifiers ran the trifecta in order.

The winner, Sonic Legend came from box eight as favourite at $2.80 and was away fairly but had to work hard out wide to get to third into the straight the first time.

Riley’s Mate led them to the first mark in 9.41 but the wide tracking Sonic Legend was a length away sec-ond, with Surfin’ Tiger on his inside third.

Sonic Legend worked around the outside to take over at the back cor-ner and paused the timer at 23.78 for the second split, leading narrowly over Riley’s Mate, with Mad Star

getting up alongside of Surfin’ Tiger to be third.

Despite tracking wide, once ahead Sonic Legend did it comforta-bly to the wire, defeating Riley’s Mate ($3.60) by a length and three quarters, with third placed Surfin’ Tiger ($8.70) three and a half lengths further astern.

Sonic Legend, a son of Elite State and Sonic Jet, is owned and trained by Peter Reinders, and in clocking 34.75 to make it two from two at the trip, the blue chaser made it three wins in 12 starts to date.

Jot this down MARKED DOWN gave a dashing display to lead throughout and take out heat two of the Grenda Transit Management Grade 5 over 595 me-tres, scoring in Best Of Night 34.07.

Drawn in box three at $8.20, the son of Primo Uno and Magic Maisy was out reasonably then quickly hunted through to find the front be-fore leading in 9.10 by three lengths over Dream Chick and Onya Splash at the first mark.

Marked Down was making every post a winner around to the far turn where he passed through in 23.12 with the best part of six lengths on Rozehill Wolf, while Onya Splash was battling away in third spot.

Marked Down never looked like being caught and made his way to the Judge four and three quarter lengths a head of the fast finishing Disraeli ($3.20), with Onya Splash ($36.60) three lengths back in third spot.

Jet Blast, owned and trained by Michael Carter, has now won eight of her 41 starts, and in posting 34.80, the black chaser has scored in two of his seven starts at the trip. Ruby’s still laughing RUBY HA HA gave a great display to lead from pillar to post before scoring in the twi t ter .com/sandowndogs Grade 5 over 515 me-tres.

After lining up in box seven at $9.30, the Robert Neocleous trained chaser came out running and had no trouble in leading by two lengths in 5.13 down to the first mark, with Hackel Bale second in front of Ellen Bale on the fence.

Ruby Ha Ha had the speed on around to the back and went through the second marker in 18.85 with a four lengths lead over Hackel Bale, while there was nearly three lengths to Limburg Gold third.

Ruby Ha Ha did it easily to the

post, scoring a five and three quarter lengths victory over Hackel Bale ($8.00), with Limburg Gold ($44.00) three quarters of a length further afield.

Ruby Ha Ha returned the new PB time of 29.46 to make it two wins in 10 tries at the trip, as part of her seven wins in 27 starts overall.

The black chaser, a daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Paddy’s Meika, is owned by the NEOMC Syndicate.

A bunch of Bales LEVIATHAN owner, Paul

Wheeler had a very good night when four of his chasers scored impres-sively.

Firstly it was the Andrea Dailly trained Chris Bale that fin-ished best to land the Racing Here Wednesday 14 March Grade 5 over 515 metres in 29.45.

Rated at $10.10 out of box seven, the son of Velocette and Saffron Bale defeated Houdini ($21.50) by five and a half lengths, with Parisette ($5.10) coming in third, a length and a quarter back.

Irma Bale for trainer Graeme Bate, was leg two and recorded 34.16 to score in heat one of the Bring Your Club To Sandown Grade 5 over 595 metres.

After lining up in box six as fa-vourite at $3.10, the daughter of Bar-trim Bale and Amelia Bale scored by five lengths over Barry Blowout ($5.60), with a length and a quarter to third placed Breathe Fear ($6.20).

Elmira Bale was leg three and she posted 34.19 when an all the way winner of heat three of the Macro Meats Grade 5 over 595 metres to provide trainer, Mark Delbridge with the first leg of a winning double.

Wearing the green vest at $3.60, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Se-rene Bale scored by five lengths over Take Me Home ($3.00 fav), with Fyna Bale ($7.800 three quarters of a length further adrift.

Cailyn Bale completed the double for Mark, and was Paul’s fourth leg when she led all the way to score in the Rapidvite ACV Mixed 3rd/4th Grade over 515 metres in the new PB and BON time of 29.41.

The daughter of Bartrim Bale and Belbin Bale came from box seven at $3.40 to score by six and three quar-ter lengths over Jet Blast ($21.00), with Darlin Bale ($16.50) picking up third money, two lengths back.

Former WA sprinter, Marked Down didn’t take too long to open his Victorian account by leading all the way over the 595 metres trip in a fast 34.07. Trained by former Sandgroper, Troy Iwanyk, Marked Down had been winless at his past dozen starts and last tasted success back on August 27 at Cannington in 30.59. Punters weren’t too keen on his chances either, with the Primo Uno and Magic Daisy chaser starting an $8.20 chance.

Recent 29.86 sprint winner, Hamilton Speed showed her versatility by scoring on debut over the 595 metres journey in 34.75. Neglected by punters, the $38.70 winner gave her trainer, Billy McMahon plenty to smile

Ruby Ha Ha had the last laugh on her rivals when she appreciated a significant drop in class to lead all the way over the 515 metres trip in a new sizzling 29.46 PB. The well bred daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Paddy’s Meika is raced by the NEOMC Syndicate and trained at Hazelwood by Robert Neocleous.

IT WAS back to back meetings at Dapto last week, and its Thursday night fixture drew a particularly strong 10-event card.

One of the main performers on the night was the Andy Lord prepared Undis-puted Dos, who stepped out over the middle distance after numerous starts recently and took on the big name play-ers in town in sprint races. Contesting the Sportingbet Stake over 600 metres, the start was going to be all- important for Undisputed Dos, who has found early trouble at recent starts.

Once the lids rose the 32kg chaser found the front and the confidence was back with a vengeance, as he was enjoy-ing being on his own. Inside the lap mark Undisputed Dos broke clear of Super Laurie with the equal

race favourite, Vintage Blend well out of contention. The further the race went, the further Undisputed Dos increased his advantage, and the extra distance was not showing any issues whatsoever. Down the home running Undisputed Dos was a ‘mile’ in front and at the judge had eight lengths to spare over National

Molly, clocking a very slick 34.44, with Vintage Blend running on in third place, a length away. Undisputed Dos, by Pure Octane out of Dos Santos, to date has had 66 career starts with 22 wins and 25 placings.

National Molly (Bombastic Shiraz x Lesson Cruiser), trained by Owen Lang-ley, has raced 21 times for four wins and six placings, whilst the John Finn trained Vintage Blend (Bombastic Shiraz x Frosty Fruits) after 13 career starts has won four times with six placings.

CONTINUING her good recent form was the Michael O’Brien owned and trained Cool Zack Knee, who led most of the way to notch her third win at the course in the Betfair Blue Paws final over 520 metres. When the lids opened, best to begin was Jessie Reltub in box five along with Cool Zack Knee in the white vest.

They raced into the first corner to-gether, and with the aid of the inside run-ning, Cool Zack Knee held the front over Jessie Reltub. Entering the back Jessie Reltub broke down and dropped back through the field, leaving the leader a long way ahead. Coming down the side Cook Zack Knee was travelling strongly, with only Biddyken Brayden and Hayville Raider emerging from the pack as hopefuls as heads were turned for home. In the straight Cook Zack Knee started to shorten stride and Hayville Raider was making good ground.

But Cool Zack Knee held on to win by one and three quarter lengths over Hayville Raider in 30.28, with Biddyken Brayden third, a length further astern. By Big Daddy Cool from Be My Girl, Cook Zack Knee has had 28 career starts that have yielded nine wins and nine placings.

Hayville Raider (Collision x Nada Mee), prepared by Bill Bates, has con-tested seven races for a win and three placings, whilst Biddyken Brayden (Big Daddy Cool x Biddyken Lass) has gath-ered six wins and 10 placings from 44 career starts for trainer, Jeff Hilder.

THE FORMCARD reads well for Big Mischief, and along with the aid of the rails box, the daughter of Bit Chili was far too strong in a heat of the Dapto To Wenty series over 520 metres. Big Mischief jumped well but was taken on for the early lead by Blazing Britt, who exited box three.

Leaving the straight Big Mischief was passed by Blazing Britt, who kept rolling along in front.

Eventually Big Mischief gave chase and inched closer as they approached the home turn.

Upon straightening, Big Mischief really lifted and charged home over the top of Blazing Britt, to score by three quarters of a length in 30.34, while Long Time wound up third, a further three and a half lengths away.

Trained by Jimmy Micallef, Big Mis-chief (x My Quoted) from 23 career starts has produced three wins with five plac-ings.

Blazing Britt (Pure Octane x Maria’s Danger), trained by Russell Ford, has had 15 career starts for two wins and eight placings, whilst the John Cassar trained Long Time (Bit Chili x Hot Plun-der) after 19 career starts has collected two wins and six placings.

Classy city sprinter Undisputed Dos made it 22 wins for the Bigger Than Life Syndicate after his all the way Dapto victory on February 23.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, March 1st, 2012 - Page 61 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

AT LAST Friday’s Wentworth Park mneeting, trainer John Callaughan took the honours with a smart piece of planning that enabled Witch On Wheels to win first-up over 520 me-tres at the Glebe venue. The tiny 26kg chaser had been doing all her chasing of late over the half-mile journey but the astute men-tor thought it might be time to sneak back into a Friday 5th Grade over the sprint journey just to freshen her up. With the aid of the rails box, Witch On Wheels began on terms with them and went into the first cor-ner leading Bit Skippy and Armenra.

Holding the rail, Witch On Wheels just shaded Armenra into the

back, but having plenty of miles in her legs meant those behind would always to struggle to stay in touch. Witch On Wheels started to draw away coming down the side, and whilst Armenra kept battling away, he was no match for the leader as they turned for home. Witch On Wheels drew right

away over the concluding stages, go-ing on to record a four and a half lengths victory over Armenra in 30.22, with Ryno Rules running on for third, a head away. Witch On Wheels, by Bombastic Shiraz from Sionara Baby, from 35 career starts to date has notched six wins and 18 placings.

Billy Bright’s Armenra (Trewly Special x Miss Spin) has contested 12 races for five wins and four placings, whilst Ryno Rules (El Galo x Dark Marne) has recorded six wins and one placing from 13 starts for Tasmanian trainer, Mick Stringer.

V E R Y C O N S I S T E N T Mandagery Miss made it two wins from her past three starts with a strong run in the Pages Event Equip-ment Stake over 520 metres. The race was action-packed with the lead changing three times before the daughter of Mandagery Man showed her class, drawing away for a comprehensive victory. Boxrise saw the white vested Melrina Miss best away, with Lyndor Lee and Just Mick at close quarters in the run to the first turn.

With the aid of the inside draw, Lyndor Lee got the break and took them to the back ahead of Melrina Miss and Mandagery Miss, who had

worked through the pack and slotted third, with the leader well in her sights. C o m i n g d o w n t h e s i d e Mandagery Miss made her charge for the lead and turning for home raced to the front.

Over the concluding stages she came right away, winning by four and three quarter lengths to Melrina Miss in a smart 30.17, with Lyndor Lee third, a further four and a half lengths astern. Mandagery Miss (x Glen Abbey Treat) has now had 33 career starts for 10 wins with 12 placings.

Prepared by Vicki Prest, Melrina Miss (Over Flo x Amazing) has had 44 career starts for eight wins and 14 placings, whilst Lyndor Lee (Primo Uno x Micro Lee), trained by Mark Arncliffe, has produced 10 wins and 18 placings from 65 career starts. JEFF JAEGER thought he had two definite winning chances in the Centrebet Gosford To Wenty Final, but was forced to scratch Purely Blue and was left with MacGruber to fly the flag. At the end of the 520 metres there can be only one winner, and it was MacGruber who held up his end for the kennel with a strong finishing effort to claim victory.

When the lids rose MacGruber was slowly away from box six, with Rosie Doons best to jump from box eight and rails runner, Barbella Osti showed pace, as too did Greg’s Chil-lin, who exited box three. After they’d sorted themselves out down the back, it was Greg’s Chillin that gained the ascendancy over Barbella Osti, White Cashbox and MacGruber was still well back. Approaching the home bend Greg’s Chillin still led from Barbella Osti, with MacGruber starting to claim the leaders quickly. After a brief struggle in the home straight, MacGruber took over and raced to the judge one and a quarter lengths ahead of Greg’s Chillin in 30.68, with White Cashbox third, a further three and three quarter lengths away. MacGruber, who is by Prang out of Candy Gain, has had 24 career starts for three wins and eight plac-ings.

Greg’s Chillin (Bit Chili x Super-cilious), trained by Paul Roach, has had 22 career starts for five wins and seven placings, whilst the Mark Mo-roney trained White Cashbox (Big Daddy Cool x Viva Conquest) after 14 starts has produced three wins and five placings.

Mandagery Miss maintained her good record by annexing a Mixed 4th/5th Grade in 30.17 at Wentworth Park’s recent Friday meeting.

ROXY MAC held off two late chal-lengers to secure a narrow win in the $15,000 Solo Summer Chase over 642 metres for trainer, Kylie McLen-nan.

A two year-old daughter of Where’s Pedro and Della Bale, she was sent out the $2.80 favourite when seeking to make it back to back mid-dle distance wins. Mortal Combat was away smart-est from the boxes but was quickly headed off by the speedy Roxy Mac.

McLennan’s charge was highbal-ling out in front with a circuit to travel, clocking a smart 11.61 open-ing split, with Mortal Combat four lengths adrift and Freeway Fame was pushing up on the paint. The punters’ elect was travelling well through the pen and a held a three length advantage leaving the back.

Mortal Combat looked to close

the margin through the final bend and the questions were starting to be asked as they entered the straight. With the favourite was tiring in the closing stages, both Mortal Com-bat and Freeway Fame made late charges.

However, in a thrilling finale, Roxy Mac held on by a head in 37.51 to beat Mortal Combat, with Freeway Fame a neck away third. It was Roxy Mac’s ninth career win from 25 outings which took her earnings to a little short of the $40,000 mark.

Double trouble TRAVEL BUG MISS, for Eric Cam-pana, announced her arrival in the West with a powerful come from be-hind run at her Cannington debut.

Better known as a middle dis-tance and staying performer in New South Wales, the daughter of Over Flo and Cookie Royal powered to the line over the 530 metres trip in 30.62, within two lengths of the BON time.

Having her first start in six weeks, Travel Bug Miss is likely to derive great benefit from the hit-out, making her a chaser to follow in the coming weeks.

The $6 chance only had one be-hind her into the first turn but was only four lengths off the early leader. Pushing through hard past run-ners, Travel Bug Miss had railed into second behind Fast Cappa onto the back straight.

Into the final turn the lamplighter left the rail and Campana was looking to claim an early winner on the card.

Travel Bug Miss did not disap-point, putting on the afterburners and finishing six lengths to the good of Fast Cappa for John Iwanyk. Eric Campana brought up his double in race seven when the tal-ented Cantrill made a welcome return to the top podium position.

A $2.90 second elect, she was away well in the yellow vest before copping a bump from West On Luke, who took the early lead. West On Luke went through the pen four lengths to the good of Kar-chada, who was ensuring Cantrill did some heavy lifting to her outside.

The lamplighter left the back in 18.98 and led Cantrill, who was now a clear second by four lengths. Cantrill joined the Britton trained West On Luke into the home run and looked set to burn off the tiring lamp-lighter.

However, both chasers were down to impulse power and it was a grind to the judge.

Cantrill won by a half length over West On Luke in 30.98, with a simi-lar margin to third placed Rumble Zone. A daughter of Collision and Next To None, Cantrill now has a record of five wins and five seconds from 16 race starts.

Rock party ROCK POOL proved her class again on Saturday night by taking out the Free To All second-up from a five months spell for mentor, Ben Aber-crombie.

Her kennelmate, also in the own-ership of Damon Fardig, was all the rage at $1.50 as she looked to make four straight wins in top company The favourite didn't get it all her own way early was between Rock Pool the rails and What Size at the first marker, with the trio on the heels of the early leader, Hayley’s Me Mum. What Size (Kody Charles) led the three-pronged attack on the leader onto the back section. with Hayley’s Me Mum giving plenty of cheek.

He was still two lengths clear of What Size and Rock Pool, who were

matching strides midway through the final turn. The lamplighter ran off heading for home and the 2010 WA Oaks winner needed no second invitation, as she strode away to the her 20th career win in Best Of Night 30.53.

Hot Irish followed her through to be a three lengths second, with Hayley’s Me Mum third. On Wednesday night, the Paul Stuart trained De Wade recorded a slashing win in the Kanyana Series final, recording BON 30.51.

The son of Bit Chili and Brook-lyn Belle sizzled early and easily crossed the field from box five. Leading by five lengths through the pen, the Stuart trained youngster was never in danger, defeating Goomalibe Lane to bring up his fourth win from eight starts.

Pretty good WHEN Frank Hancock tried to sell his bitch, Hannalore’s first litter of pups for $2,000 apiece, he did not even get an enquiry. That turned out trumps because at Lis-more on Tuesday night, Pretty Malaika, one of those unwanted youngsters, scored her 41st win in 94 starts and took her prizemoney to $80,000 - all earned on bush tracks. Hancock, who trained his first greyhound in 1976, is at Spring Grove, between Casino and Lismore, and has not been tempted to bring Pretty Malaika to Wentworth Park. “I hate travelling, but never considered sending her to a Sydney trainer,” he said.

“Pretty Malaika has not been tried beyond 500 metres, and whilst she would have run that distance when younger, she is now over four years-old so would struggle.”

Despite Pretty Malaika’s extraordi-nary strike rate, Hancock doesn’t rate her his best.

“Her dam, Hannalore won 52 races and was as good.”

“The dog’s previous owner works in the mines, so his wife had to sometimes exercise his dogs, but Little Ben was too strong for her,” Miller revealed.

“I’ve had greyhounds for 30 years, with my best being Bago Raider, who won 15 races.”

Part-owned by Sydney’s Gordon Sciber-ras and Castlereagh breeder, Barbara Spack-man, Little Mother has earned $347,000 in New Zealand. “She is a four and a half year-old veteran, and at Manakau she was having her first start for five weeks after tearing out a toenail,” Sciberras said.
