The start of a new year brings with it the eternal hope that this year, yes, this year, I will not only join a health club, but will actually go for more than one or two visits. And each year, just as the swallows return to Capistrano, I find ways to avoid the health club and justify that early morning breakfast omelet with bacon and a caramel roll on the side.

We all know how powerful human nature is and understand the challenge of getting everything done that we commit to each day. That is why at the Chamber we work hard to make sure that your investment is about what we can do for you, not what you need to do for us. Far too often members join the chamber and then a year later tell us that they didn’t get anything out of the investment. I understand the

comment, but I have to tell you we are working harder than ever to change that story.

If you are reading this perspective you already know that every week we are sending an e-mail to your mailbox with our latest events, business advocacy work, or breaking news that we believe our members should know about. Each Friday we send out our Friday Facts, an e-newsletter that reaches over 13,000 recipients across the metropolitan area. The member news section of Friday Facts is filled with current events and updates, giving you insight into what our members are doing. Lastly, our SPACC Savings provides members with a way to market goods and services to 5,000 visitors of our website each month.

We are forming new partnerships with business associations and trade groups, bringing value to our members. We are working hard on core infrastructure projects, like roads, bridges, light rail, parking meters in downtown Saint Paul, and even our new Civic Engagement Guide; all are investments that the Chamber is making for the entire business community.

Haven’t hit your hot button yet? Then please, let me know personally. We know that you invested in the Chamber, just like that health club, with high expectations. If we haven’t met them through our existing work, I’d like to know about it. If we can’t help you directly, I’m confident we can find a partner who can help you.

We are committed to making sure that your investment pays off and that you realize the benefits of a Chamber membership.

So don’t leave us! Challenge us! We can’t lift the weights for you at the health club, but we can make it a lot easier for you to succeed!

In 2009, Leadership Saint Paul (LSP) participant Mindee Kastelic chose tutoring for her community service project after learning a startling fact — over half the students in the Saint Paul Public Schools are not proficient in reading and math.

“It was eye-opening to me to learn about the challenges to academic success faced by so many children in our community,” said Kastelic, director of member services for the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce.

While in LSP, Kastelic and other participants tutored in area elementary schools through the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation’s Tutoring Partnership for Academic Excellence, which brings together tutoring providers, educators and community stakeholders around the goal of increasing the quantity and quality of tutors and tutoring programs. The Tutoring Partnership includes 28 community-based organizations that tutor more than 6,500 students in 41 Saint Paul Public schools.

In addition, the LSP team helped the Foundation develop

plans to reach its long-term goal of recruiting 1,000 volunteer tutors annually from Saint Paul area businesses and corporations.

This year, a team of LSP participants is continuing that effort, and their help is invaluable, said Karen Woodward, Tutoring

Partnership program director.

“Together, we are creating a stronger and wider base of support for volunteer tutoring, building on successful experiences of corporations such as Travelers, Ecolab, Securian, 3M, Lawson, Drake Bank, the United Way and United Hospital,” she said.

The Tutoring Partnership’s target is a persistent achievement gap in the Saint Paul school district. By the time students reach 3rd grade, 40% cannot read at their grade level. By 8th grade, less than 60% of the students are capable of completing grade level math.

The good news is that tutoring done well can and does turn those numbers around, as evidenced by independent

evaluations of Tutoring Partnership providers. An ASPEN Associates study, conducted in 2011, found that growth rates of third graders tutored greatly exceeded those of students not tutored. The growth rate was 27% higher for English Language Learners and 22% higher for low-income students.

Tutoring yields a valuable economic payoff as well.

An analysis conducted by the Morning Foundation in 2010 showed that a relatively small investment of $2,250 per student for tutoring over three years can yield up to

$87,500 in return of incremental economic value to society over the lifetime of a student.

“We share a strong common interest in the academic success of Saint Paul’s youth,” said Mike Anderson, executive director of the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation, and a board member

of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation “because today’s students are our future workforce and leaders.”

While the Tutoring Partnership has grown rapidly, Anderson said the involvement of more corporations and businesses of all sizes is needed to
