A moment makes a memory, a memory makes a story, and a story lives on for generations. Many people who have walked through the doors of The Saint Paul Hotel have walked away with stories that have

become the legacy that is The Saint Paul Hotel. Weathering decades of historical moments, The Hotel has remained a landmark within the community. This year, The Saint Paul Hotel is celebrating 100 years of business.

When The Saint Paul Hotel was but a dream of Lucius Ordway, Saint Paul was a growing city in need of an elite hotel that would support such growth. It was in 1908 when

he envisioned Rice Park as the perfect spot for a grand hotel in downtown Saint Paul. Backed by the Saint Paul Business League, Lucius Ordway and his entrepreneurial spirit sought out Reed and Stem, the architectural firm that designed New York’s Grand Central Terminal. With fine work of brick and stone, the “Million-Dollar Hotel” opened its doors with much excitement on April 18, 1910.

Built with the latest décor, furnishings and technology of the time, The Hotel was deemed “Best in the West” by the National Hotelmen’s Association just a few weeks after opening. Since then, The Hotel has received numerous awards that have recognized its commitment to excellence, quality and service. People from across the world, including presidents, world leaders, movie stars, royalty and sports figures have experienced The Hotel’s impeccable service.

As Saint Paul continued to grow over the decades, so too, did the need for restoration, maintenance and repair of The Hotel. In 1982 The Hotel re-opened its doors after a major remodel that brought The Hotel up to the standards of elegance patrons came to expect. The community once again embraced The Saint Paul Hotel. For some, such as the Walters and Alberg families of northern Minnesota, they’ve stayed with The Hotel every year since 2000 during the Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey Tournament. For others, such as the Warner family, they have celebrated many Christmas holidays at The Hotel. For those who have yet to enter the grand doors of The Saint Paul Hotel, 2010 is the year to do it.

Notable Moments in The Saint Paul Hotel’s History• In July of 1920, 300 women from 45 states gathered for the National

Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club convention (the still active organization returned to Saint Paul in 2000).

• During Saint Paul’s gangster era in the 1920s and 1930s, Leon Gleckman, known as “the Al Capone of Saint Paul,” maintained his business dealings in a suite at The Hotel. Mike Malone, a U.S. Treasury Department official who infiltrated Al Capone’s syndicate in Chicago, also rented a room at The Hotel to observe Gleckman’s activities.

• During prohibition, deliveries of liquor were made to The Hotel and the bellhops were ready with envelopes of cash to accept the merchandise at prices of $25 a gallon.

• On June 26, 1937, a young band leader named Lawrence Welk began playing at The Hotel on Saturday nights.

• On September 13, 1947, Gene Autry checked into The Hotel for 8 days – with his horse, Champion. They were in town performing in the World Championship Rodeo at the Saint Paul Auditorium.

• Shortly after John F. Kennedy’s first televised debate with Richard Nixon in 1960, Kennedy addressed a group of 500 at a reception in The Hotel’s grand ballroom and was greeted by another 17,000 supporters outside The Hotel.
