Volume 26, Number 4 December, 2003 www.geneseeorchid.org NEXT MEETING: THE HOLIDAY BANQUET SUNDAY, DEC. 7, 2003 Joy Luck Garden k Panorama Plaza k Penfield, NY W ell, this is the time of the year that pretty much eliminates the rest of the plant world from our attention. The spring and summer gardens have long since faded, the leaves have fallen away and the arrival of seed catalogues is still a while off. What’s “left”, if that is a fitting label, are our glorious orchids: in windowsills, under lights, in basement growing rooms, and of course, in the greenhouses of those lucky enough to own such a piece of paradise. There are scattered things in bloom here and there, but the army of Phalaenopsis “spikes” is growing in number almost daily, and the promise of Spring and Summer flowers is already clear. D id you win a plant at one of our raffles or perhaps at the auction? What could be better than anticipating its flowering in the coming months! Take a break from the weather,or from hectic holiday preparations, or from throwing snowballs at pass- ing Toronto Globe & Mail trucks. Go and spend some time with your orchids and marvel at the incredible beauty and intrigue sleep- ing in that little pot. W e’ll see many of you at the Holiday Dinner on December 7th. Well, this is the time of the year that prettymuch eliminates the rest of the plant worldfrom our attention. The spring and summergardens have long since faded, the leaves have

fallen away and the arrival of seed catalogues isstill a while off. What’s “left”, if that is a fitting

label, are our glorious orchids: in windowsills, under lights, in basement growing rooms, and ofcourse, in the greenhouses of those lucky enough

to own such a piece of paradise. There arescattered things in bloom here and there, but

the army of Phalaenopsis “spikes” is growingin number almost daily, and the promise of

Spring and Summer flowers is already clear.

Did you win a plant at one of our raffles orperhaps at the auction? What could be better

than anticipating its flowering in the comingmonths! Take a break from the weather, or from hectic

holiday preparations, or from throwing snowballs at pass-ing Toronto Globe & Mail trucks. Go and spend some time with

your orchids and marvel at the incredible beauty and intrigue sleep-ing in that little pot.

We’ll see many of you at the Holiday Dinner onDecember 7th. There’s still time to sign up - see theform on Page 3 of this newsletter. Best Wishes for asafe and happy holiday season from the GROS!

PRESIDENT’S CORNERMy brain is not yet completely here inRochester. I’ve just returned from two weeksin Ecuador. We saw many different orchidhabitats, as well as the beautiful Ecuadoriancountryside. There are many extremes there, high and low, wet and dry. The quantity andvariety of the vegetation was phenomenal.Much as I love orchids, I kept getting dis-tracted by other kinds of plants.

Tis the start of the winter holidays. Considercoming to the GROS banquet and socializ-ing with your orchid friends - a good begin-ning to a social season.
