Another month has come and gone since we saw each other. I hope this month has seen you healthy, happy and carving as much as you can. This time next month we will be celebrating our annual picnic, enjoying each others company and some good food. Both the Canyon County Fair and the Western Idaho Fair are coming up quickly on us. The Canyon County Fair is July 24-27. Early registration deadline is July 16, with late registration on July 19. The Western Idaho Fair is August 15-24. Registration for competitors is August 7, with late registration on August Our Guild meets the second Thursday of each month all year round at 6:30 P.M. at the Woodcraft located at the Overland Park Shopping Center at 7005 West Overland Road, Boise ID 83709 (208) 338-1190. 11-12. Cost of entries is $3 per professional entry, with $2 for online registration. Amateurs and beginners pay no fee for entering. I always enjoy going to see the entries, and to see how well my friends did in the competitions. We will also be demonstrating in the Hobby/Craft section, as we have done for several years. I still have several slots open for anyone willing to sit at the Western Idaho Fair, carve and talk to those interested in carving. We usually have a great outing, and lots of folks show up to just chat about carving. See me at the meeting if you want to get on the schedule for carving at the Western Idaho Fair. This month’s program will be a video presentation. I will show the Harley Refsal video “Figure Carving Scandinavian Style with Harley Refsal”. The video is 90 minutes and covers the history of Scandinavian carving, and sharpening. We will skip to the blank stage, and watch as Harley Refsal carves Karl Oskar, the flat plane figure. It is very interesting to see how he lays it out, what cuts he uses, and how interesting a figure can be carved using large cuts (“big chips”!). Anyway, I hope you can stay and enjoy this carving tutorial on flat plane carving. We will plan our annual picnic, figuring out the usual stuff, such as where to hold it, what to have, any entertainment, and other important things. Don’t forget to bring your carved pencil that we gave out at last month’s meeting. If you did not get one of those pencils (the large red ones), use an over-sized pencil, if you with to participate in this. We will trade them to each other at the picnic by drawing numbers. It should be fun to see what everyone has done to their pencil. Well, thanks for listening. Keep your tools and your wits sharp, and the chips and jokes flowing. Thanks! June 2014 Minutes by Carolyn Greener IWG Meeting on June 12th, 2014. [please note: these minutes have been typed by Carolyn, trying to interpret notes taken by Eric.] Eric called the meeting to order at 6:32. Jane was present; John and Carolyn were not. Mark Mackey and Don Price were introduced, new folks to the meeting. Jane was apparently not happy with how Eric handled the checkbook in her absence. Now maybe she wont leave again! (2+2=5) Eric had a box of misc. wood to be given away. About one-third disappeared. Eric also had club patches for sale at three dollars each. A few were sold. Eric, Jane, Bob R and Ken P gave a report on the Tri-Cities Carving Rendezvous, they all attended, June 6-8. Upcoming carving events: the Ellensberg Carving Academy, Ellensburg Wa, July 14-18, and The Oregon Woodcarvers Rendezvous, Silverton Or, Sept 18-24. http://www.nwcarvingacademy.com/classes/2014-classes.html Then there was a discussion about reviving the Jamboree. Eric had sent out a questionnaire and received lots of great comments, questions, ideas, etc. He will meet with Monte on June 19, to go over plans for next year. Show and Tell had several participants. Dave sharp have a short burnishing demo. The raffle was good. Larry C had a program on the Ward World Championship. Finis."

Larry Christ’s video presentation on the Ward World Championship

Announcement from Carolyn Greener "New Flash from the Rogue Carvers Guild! You can still earn your Section Challenge patch for 2014! True! Let me tell you how! Just enter one carving in each woodcarving section of either the Canyon County Fair or the Western Idaho Fair. That's right folks, it's just that easy. So pull those birds out of your dust collectors, and let's show the good people of Idaho how we carve!" "The Canyon County Fair drop-off is June 19th, pick up is June 28th. If anyone would like items entered, I would be more than happy to transport them for you.--Carolyn"

Thanks, Larry

Open Carving

Eric and Norm brainstorming ideas for a future Jamboree

“Carving is a source of joy to the artist… To attack the raw material, gradually to extract a shape out of it following one's own desire, or, sometimes, the inspiration of the material itself: this gives the sculptor great joy. In carving, material and thought are linked by the hand alone; thus the raw material is imbued with a warmth of feeling directly drawn from the artist's nature." -Aristide Maillol1861-1944
