In the next couple of weeks our church will take part in a congregational survey. This is an online survey to gather input from the people in our church. It is short (29 questions) and easy to use. The results will provide the Healthy Church Initiative (HCI) Consultation team valuable perspectives about our church. Please take a few minutes and follow the instructions below. 1. Address: The link for the survey tool is; 2. Goal: More than 50% of our people to complete the survey. The more the better! 3. Deadline: The survey will open on Sunday, November 2, and close on Sunday, November 16. All data submitted through the online survey is anonymous and completely confidential . Each adult and youth in the family should complete their own survey. Due to the labor intensive nature of collecting the data, this survey is intended to be done online. If you are unable to complete the survey online a paper copy can be made available. It is important that each question be answered. If you are unsure of an answer, it is recommended that you choose “neutral” or fill in the blank with “none” for text answer questions. The results of the completed surveys will help the HCI Consultation team develop a plan of action (prescription) for WUMC to become a healthier church. " My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;

I will sing and make melody.

Awake, my soul!"

- Psalm 108

I have now had Scott Wilson as the director of a choir I'm singing in longer than any other choir director. That's saying quite a lot since I've been in choir since 3rd grade! Scott is a talented and generous leader, and it's not only fun to sing with him, it's fun to sing with the choir members who love to sing as part of their ministry to our church.

I've been in choir non-stop since 3rd grade. I love to sing, and singing is one of the most personal ways I praise God. I love to sing in the choir, and singing in the choir is of the most connected ways I serve God in the church.

The biblical book of Psalms is the "hymn book" of the bible. Imagine how important singing must have been to those who assembled the bible to dedicate 150 chapters to songs of praise!

And when is music more important to us than during the Christmas season? How could we have an Advent season without a Music Sunday? Or how could we have a Christmas Eve service without singing "Silent Night"?

So now's the time to contribute YOUR talent and enthusiasm to praising God. Both the choir and the adult Filthy Rags praise band have started practicing Christmas music. The choir needs singers; the band needs drummers and guitar players; the worship service needs PowerPoint creators and sound booth workers.

The church needs YOU.

Come make melody to the Lord. The choir rehearses Wednesday nights; the band re-hearses Thursday nights; childcare is currently available Wednesdays and can be available on Thursdays. Contact me, and I'll put you in touch with Scott or with band leader Randy Mitchell: [email protected] or 972-442-5835.

Come sing and make melody!

Love, Pastor Kathryn Strempke

Mission Market Page 4

Mission Market Starts THIS Sunday

Make Christmas about Jesus. Give gifts that reach out to

Jesus by reaching out to "the least of these [his] brothers

and sisters" (Matthew 25:40). Buy a gift at the Mission

Market November 2 and 9; you give the certificate to your

friend or relative; your monetary gift goes to one of the

following places where our neighbors are in need.

Heifer Project International sends animals and accompanying education into areas

of hunger. Texas Ramp Project builds to disabled community. WUMC’s Abundant Needs fund provides financial assistance to our Wylie-Sachse-

Murphy area neighbors who need help with a bill. United Methodist Committee on Relief offers disaster relief all around the U.S. and

the world. Stop Hunger Now helps us bag 15,000 meals this year to go to our hungry

neighbors around the globe. Family Promise is a coalition of churches in Collin County who house homeless

families and help them get back on their feet. In addition to gift certificates from the above missions, you may buy tamales from Christ’s Foundry United Methodist Mission to support this Hispanic congregation in the Love Field area of Dallas. And you may buy soup-in-a- School class which will benefit our B.I.G. Feed summertime feeding program right here in Wylie.

Shop Mission Market, and make this a Christ-filled, meaningful Christmas.

Wylie UMC's college kids are over halfway through their fall semester, and we would love to send them something extra special as they work hard before finals.

We invite you to continue to help our college students stay connected to Wylie UMC by being involved in our College Care Ministry. Our College Care Ministry will send care packages and letters to our college students. This is a won-derful ministry maintaining contact with our college stu-dents by letting them know that our church loves and cares for them.

We will be sending letters and care packages soon, and here are some examples for a care package items we will be collecting:

If this is something you would like to help out with please contact Chuck or Michelle Church at or 972-302-2580.

From the Mailbag Dear Wylie UMC, Thank you for your gift of $235.23 [communion rail offering from September] to Providence Place [Methodist Children’s Home in San Antonio]. Your compassionate support makes it possible for our ministry to reach out and touch the lives of birth parents, adoptive families, and young adults with disabilities. Your compassion and generosity make it possible for us to minister and help positively impact lives on a daily basis. LeClair Reaves is a licensed foster mother working for Providence Place who has provided temporary care for 200 babies since 1990. She feeds, bathes, diaper, and rocks the babies in her home

until they go home to their permanent families. She takes care of healthy babies and special needs babies. Some babies might need surgery, apnea monitors, feeding tubes or oxygen. They are all precious, and they are all loved. For adoptive parents, she is a godsend not only because she is a great help, but because she makes it easier for them to bond with their baby. Your kindness touches and tranforms the lives of so many. With your generosity and the loving guidance of God’s love, we can continue to help build families and futures for generations to come. Together we are giving God’s children a faith, a family, a future.

Sincerely, Jennifer Sample President and CEO

"Daylight Saving Time" is over (Sunday). Don't be late or early or whichever it is! Fall is almost over - did it ever come? As Kathryn reminded us Sunday this is Texas, yu'awl, and our weather does its own thing!! The pumpkins will disappear after Thursday, and the reason for their having come will be over Friday night. WHS and WEHS football is exciting, and Cowboy fever is raging stronger than the 1990's (or the 1960's if you're anywhere near as old as I am!!). Don't forget the church! It, too, is an exciting place to be. The mission market, morning worship led by United Methodist Men, perhaps a new reminder that we are one in grief and in joy. Thanksgiving may be a federal holiday, but it is constant prayer of the church. We are united in prayer, in concern, in celebration, in Christ. Sunday morning worship has always energized me - that's the church gath-ered, God's people thanking God and listening for God's Word of direction. The church is a gathering of people seeking meaning and new life, living strong together. I hope you are remembering prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness - those are our promises. Grace and peace. Pastor John Taylor

Do you play drums, guitar, piano or bass? Have you ever had an interest in running sound

or helping with the slides for worship on Sunday?

If so, now is your time! Filthy Rags Praise and Worship team is looking for you!

We are looking to grow our program with committed, Christ centered individuals.

If you play drums, guitar, piano or bass OR

are interested in learning how to run our sound board OR

can help with the powerpoint slides we use in worship, please prayerfully consider contacting me at

[email protected] or

469-323-2919. We can use your help! Thanks.

Volunteers are needed to decorate the church at Christmas. We have the trees, the wreaths, the lights, the ornaments. What we don’t have is a group to be responsible for putting them out … and taking them down and putting them away. If you would like to be part of that group, please call or email the church office.

CAN YOU HELP? Page 11

John Scanlan December 13, 1941 – October 20, 2014

John Scanlan died at his home in St.

Paul on Monday, October 20, 2014.

John joined Wylie United Methodist

Church April 7, 2002, by profession of faith.

John immediately moved into guiding the

church with leadership skills that adapted into

many of the “official” roles of the church. He

served as Lay Leader of the church which

meant he served on the Administrative Board,

the Staff Parish Relations Committee, the

Finance Committee, and the Council of

Ministries. He was the church’s lay delegate

to Annual Conference for many years, and he

was a regular, active usher.

John was a guiding member of the

Tuesday Night Men’s Bible Study, the Wesley Sunday School Class, and the True Grit

Men’s Saturday morning group.

His love of the bible, love of the Church, and

love of Christ also influenced his leadership on

the St. Paul City Council and the Radio Testing

Club. When St. Paul was incorporated on Decem-

ber 4, 1971, John Scanlan was one of the original

council members. John once again became a

councilman for the Town of St. Paul in 2007 and

held th position until his death.

John had a vision of the future of Wylie

UMC that those of us now left with the responsi-

bility hope we can maintain and move into.

Wylie United Methodist Church offers our

condolences and love to John’s wife, Paula, and

all the rest of his family.

IN THE ARMS OF THE LORD

It’s not easy letting go

Because I love you so.

But I know you’re in the arms of the Lord.

And tho’ I must say goodbye,

And I cannot help but cry,

I know you’re in the arms of the Lord.

It’s a part of God’s plan

Even if I don’t fully understand,

And you’re safe in the arms of the Lord.

You’re in my broken heart

Where you’ve been from the start.

Even now you’re in the arms of the Lord.

But He’s carrying me through this pain

Until we’re together once again,

And we’ll both be in the arms of the Lord.

BIBLE LESSON AT GARNET HILL WUMC continues to serve the residents of Garnet Hill each Tuesday morning from 10-11 am with a short message or devotion, a song, and a prayer. It’s a wonderful time for fellowship with the 3-10 residents who attend each week. There are currently 5 active WUMC members volunteering, but an additional 3 would help strengthen the program and allow everyone to serve only 1 hour, every 2 months. Please consider if you can join us for this ministry. Talk to Elizabeth McCarthy, Sue Clayton, Gayle Whitley, Kitty Price or George Whitley to learn more, or call the church office at 972-442-5835.
