Here we go! Ready to start the Next StoryWe’re finally ready to go! I welcome you to the first leg of the 2014 expe-dition, and am delighted that we’ll be making this trip together.

A few points to remembern Give your personal equipment another quick check. You shouldn’t bring too much with you, as the space available for luggage is limit-ed. Very important for those riding the motorbikes: Remember to bring an approved full face helmet and suitable motor bike clothing.

第一阶段：伊斯坦布尔启程，目的地第比利斯

Byzanz – so hieß der Ausgangs-punkt unserer ersten Etappe zu Zeiten des Römischen Reichs. Aufgrund seiner Lage am Durch-gang vom Mittel- zum Schwarzen Meer und dem Übergang von Europa nach Kleinasien besaß es schon damals große Bedeutung. Heute ist Istanbul das pulsierende Zentrum der modernen Türkei, eines Staatsgebildes, das ohne die Seidenstraße nicht denkbar wäre.

Neben ihrer Funktion als Handels-weg diente die Seidenstraße stets auch als Route des Vordringens von Kulturen und Völkerschaften von Osten nach Westen und um-gekehrt. Noch um 1000 n.Chr., zur Zeit des Niedergangs des Byzan-tinischen Reichs, findet man hier keine türkische Besiedlung. Erst mit dem Sieg des Seldschuken Alp Arslan über die Truppen von Byzanz 1061 bei Manzikert (heute Malazgirt) begann die türkische Besiedlung.

Zurück in die frühe Zeit des Ge-biets reicht die Begegnung mit der Kultur der Hethiter in Hattusa, die zwischen 1500 und 1000 v. Chr. mächtige Gegenspieler der Reiche von Assyrien und Ägypten waren. Schließlich erreichen wir am Ende dieses Teilstücks den Kaukasus, ähnlich wie die Argonauten der griechischen Sage.

Byzantium – in Roman times this was the name of the place where the first stage starts. It was already very important back then, owing to its position at the point where the Mediterranean and Black Seas meet, and where Europe becomes Asia Minor. Today Istanbul is the vibrant centre of modern Turkey, a state that is unthinkable without the Silk Road.

Apart from its function as a trading route, the Silk Road has always served the advance of cultures and peoples from East to West and vice versa. Around 1000 B.C., at the time of the fall of the Byzantine Empire, there was still no Turkish settlement here. It was only with the victory of the Seljuq, Alp Ars-lan, over the Byzantine troops at Manzikert (now Malazgirt) in 1061 that Turkish settlement began.

Going even further back in history, the Hattusa region was home to the Hittites – powerful adversar-ies of the Assyrian and Egyptian Empires between 1500 and 1000 B.C. Finally, like the Argonauts of Greek mythology, at the end of this section we come to the Caucasus.

拜占庭 – 罗马帝国时期名称，是我们第一段旅程的起点。由于其处于通往黑海及欧洲至小亚细亚道路的中心位置，当时具有重要意义。现在 ， 伊 斯 坦 布 尔 是 当 今 土 耳 其 活跃多彩的中心。没有古时的丝绸之路，土耳其的面貌将不可想象。

除 了 作 为 商 路 ， 丝 绸 之 路 也 一 直是 东 西 方 之 间 文 化 传 播 和 人 员 往来之路。约在公元1000年，拜占庭帝国没落时期，这里还没有土耳其族部落。1061年，瑟德苏肯人(Seldschuken) Alp Arslan在曼齐克特(Manzikert，今天的马拉兹吉尔特(Malazgirt))战胜拜占庭军队，土耳其人开始在这里聚居。

第二阶段：第比利斯启程，目的地伊斯法罕

Die Gebirgszüge des Kaukasus bilden eine mächtige Barriere zwi-schen den eurasischen Steppen im Norden und dem Gebiet des Fruchtbaren Halbmonds im Vorde-ren Orient. Die abgelegenen Hoch-täler und -ebenen des Kaukasus bieten Zuflucht für zahllose ethnische und religiöse Minderheiten.

Die Republiken Geor-gien, Armenien und Aserbaidschan bilden heute den Südteil des Kaukasus, die beiden erstgenannten zählen zu den ältesten christlichen Gemeinschaften der Welt, wovon noch heute zahlreiche Kirchen und Klöster zeugen. Im 13. und 14. Jh. war der Nordwestiran Sitz einer mongolischen Dynastie, ebenfalls in dieser Gegend entstanden im 16. Jh. die Grundlagen des heuti-gen iranischen Nationalstaats.

Unser Weg führt uns in die Hoch-täler des Alborz-Gebirges zu der alten Bergfeste Alamut, früher der Sitz des gefürchteten „Alten vom Berge“, wie der Führer der Ismae-litengemeinschaft genannt wurde. Wir kommen an den Fuß des 5.671 m hohen Damavand und erreichen dann schließlich eine der Perlen des Orients, die alte Residenzstadt Isfahan.

The Caucasus Mountains form a mighty barrier between the Eu-ropean steppes to the North and the region of the Fertile Crescent in the Near East. The isolated high valleys and plateaus of the Cauca-sus offer refuge to countless ethnic and religious minorities.

The Republics of Georgia, Arme-nia and Azerbaijan now form the southern part of the Caucasus, the first two being amongst the oldest Christian communities in the world, a fact to which the many churches and monasteries still bear witness. During the 13th and 14th centuries, northwest Iran was home to a Mongolian dynasty and the seeds of the present state of Iran were sown in the same area in the 16th century.

Our route takes us into the high valleys of the Alborz Mountains to the ancient mountain fortress of Alamut, once home to the dread-ed “Old Man of the Mountains” as the leader of the Ishmaelites was known. We will come to the foot of 5671-meter-high Damavand, after which we will reach one of the pearls of the Orient, the old royal city of Isfahan.

高加索山脉在北部亚欧平原和近东新月沃土之间形成了一道天然的屏障。高加索山的高地山谷和高原地处偏远，也为无数种族和宗教少数派提供了避难所。

现 在 ， 格 鲁 吉 亚 、 亚 美 尼 亚 和 阿塞 拜 疆 共 和 国 构 成 了 高 加 索 南 部地区。其中前两个国家是世界上最早 确 立 基 督 教 为 国 教 的 国 家 ， 至今仍有许多教堂、修道院可为其佐证。13和14世纪，伊朗西北部的蒙古王朝崛起。16世纪，就在同一地区出现今天伊朗民族国家的前身。

Wir erreichen Persepolis, den glänzenden Höhepunkt des Reichs der Achämeniden, das auch als das erste Weltreich der Geschichte bezeichnet wird. Hier begann Mitte des 6. Jh. v. Chr. der Sturmlauf Kyros des Großen, der innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte Teile von Asien, Afrika und Europa eroberte. Hier endete dieses Reich auch, nachdem Alexander der Große Persepolis eroberte.

Seinen und auch den Spuren Marco Polos folgen wir weiter in Richtung Nordosten und durch-queren die Große Kavir und die Wüste Lut. Der letzte Höhepunkt auf iranischem Boden ist das schiitische Pilgerzentrum Mash-had mit dem prachtvollen Grabbau des Imam Reza aus der Reihe der heiligen Imame der Schiiten.

Nun wenden wir uns den Step-pen Zentralasiens zu. Von der Hauptstadt Turkmenistans aus beginnt die Durchquerung der Karakum, unterbrochen nur durch ein Lager beim großen Gaskrater von Derveze. Drei große alte Han-delsmetropolen der Seidenstraße mit teilweise prachtvollen alten Bauten, Xiva, Buchara und Sa-markand, sind unsere nächsten Ziele. Beendet wird diese Etappe in Taschkent, der heutigen Haupt-stadt Usbekistans.

We reach Persepolis, the daz-zling city that marked the high point of the Achaemenid Empire, said to be the first empire of the ancient world. It was from here in the middle of the 6th century B.C. that Cyrus the Great launched his invasion, conquering parts of Asia, Africa and Europe within a few decades. This was also where the Empire fell, after Alexander the Great captured Persepolis.

Moving northwest, we continue to follow in his footsteps and those of Marco Polo, crossing the Great Kavir and the Lut Desert. The final highlight on Iranian territory will be the Shi’ite pilgrimage site of Mash-had with the magnificent tomb of Imam Reza, one of a series of Shi’ite holy imams.

We now turn towards the steppes of Central Asia. Starting from the capital of Turkmenistan, we begin crossing the Karakum, our trip interrupted only by a night camp-ing beside the great gas crater at Derveze. Our next destinations are three mighty and ancient trading metropolises on the Silk Road – Xiva, Bukhara and Sarmakand, which feature some splendid old buildings. This stage ends in Tashkent, now the capital of Uzbekistan.

Über mehrere Wochen hinweg wurden zunächst die Themen Um-welt, Klimaschutz und Recycling behandelt. Direkt im Anschluss haben die Jugendlichen mit der Entwicklung eigener Umweltpro-jekte begonnen.

„Das Projekt hat Modellcharakter“, berichtet World Vision-Mitarbeiter Hannes Reuter. „Jetzt sollte auf dem guten Ansatz so schnell wie möglich aufgebaut und die Idee auch auf andere Regionen übertra-gen werden. Mit der Unterstützung von Spendern und Partnern können wir noch mehr Projekte möglich machen.“

Eine Spende hilft weiterWir werden mit einer Spende dafür sorgen, dass dieses Projekt weiter ausgebaut werden kann – und auch andere neue Konzepte für Jugend und Umwelt in Armeni-en angegangen werden können. Über den Stand des ökologischen Jugendprojekts werden wir uns vor Ort informieren.

Wir nehmen viel für uns mit.Und geben etwas zurück.Im Lauf unserer Expedition werden wir die Menschen, die Kulturen und das gesellschaftliche Mitein-ander zahlreicher fremder Länder kennenlernen. Bildung in GrünIn der Region Gegharkunik in Armenien sind Umweltprobleme allgegenwärtig, etwa die unkontrol-lierte Rodung der Wälder oder die Verschmutzung des Sevan-Sees. Um Jugendliche über die Heraus-forderungen aufzuklären, wurde in Kooperation mit der Universität von Gavar ein „Lernraum“ mit Computern und Zugang zu Lehr-materialien eingerichtet.

“The project sets an example,” says World Vision employee Hannes Reuter. “Now we want this positive approach to be transferred as quickly as possible to other regions as well. With the support of donors and partners we can enable even more projects.”

A donation will helpOur donation will help to ensure that this project can be expanded – and that other, new concepts for young people and the environment in Armenia can also be launched. We will be informing ourselves at first hand about the status of the ecological youth project.

We’re taking away a lot. And we’re giving something back.During the course of our expedi-tion, we will encounter the people, cultures and social interaction of many unfamiliar countries. We will be making a donation to leave something behind that has a pos-itive impact on local life, and have chosen a project organised by World Vision Deutschland e. V.

Green educationEnvironmental problems, such as uncontrolled forest clearance or the pollution of Lake Sevan, are omnipresent in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. In order to educate young people about the challenges, a “learning room” with computers and access to teach-ing materials has been set up, in conjunction with the University of Gavar.
