Art Against AIDS, one of the city’s most exciting galas and art auctions will be held at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Saturday, December 7th. This year’s theme, “Young at Art” is the highlight of a year-long celebration of art programs for our clients, generously sponsored by Chevron. For more than a quarter century, Art Against AIDS, started by Arthur Roger as a sale of ornaments displayed in his gallery, has been a kick-off to the holiday season, raising more than $2 million for AIDS awareness and services for people affected by HIV and AIDS. Our Honorary Co-Chairs, artists Sarah Ashley Longshore, and David Harouni, invite you to join us for an evening of great entertainment with headliner band “The Honorable South,” burlesque performances including cast members of “Broadway Bares,” dance routines by “The Sirens of New Orleans,” food donated by local restaurants & caterers, a stellar silent auction of art, a Holiday Boutique…and dancing under the stars to the music of DJ Robbie Martin! Tickets are on sale now and are expected to sell out quickly. There’s still time to join us at the patron level and enjoy an evening of food, libations, and music provided by the St. Michael’s Special School Bell Choir. The Patron Party will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the Louisiana Children’s Museum. The Chevron NO/AIDS WALK with Presenting Sponsors Avita Drugs and Shell a Huge Success!

Over 3500 people took to the streets on Sunday, September 29th to help raise awareness about AIDS in our com-munity. Participants also helped raise nearly $200,000 for NO/AIDS Task Force, one of the oldest and largest AIDS Service Organizations in the Gulf South. The dollars raised will help the Task Force continue providing care and services to over 2500 men, women and families affected by this disease. A portion of the funds raised will also be shared with other AIDS Service Organizations around the state who participated in the WALK Share Grant Pro-gram.

The crowd at this year’s NO/AIDS WALK was the largest the event had seen in years. The diverse groups that come together in support of NO/AIDS Task Force each year is always impressive. School groups from elementary schools to college and university students, businesses, church groups, other nonprofits, and families from across the metro area come together each year to support the efforts of the Task Force and help raise much needed funds.

This year’s top fundraiser was once again Toby Lefort, who exceeded his goal of $25,000. Teams taking home trophies included Ben Franklin High School Gay Straight Alliance winning the Principal’s Award; The Chancellor’s Award went to The Tulane ID Germ Busters; the Top Team with 10 Members or Less went to Adeeta Corporate Staffing; The Top Mega Team was Friends of D.A.G.; and finally the School Spirit Award was captured by Bonnabel High School.

NO/AIDS Task Force would like to thank all of those that helped to make this year’s event a success, including all of the teams and individuals that participated in the event, over 200 volunteers that provided assistance on Septem-ber 29th as well as the event’s sponsors which included Chevron, Avita Drugs Pharmacy, Shell, Macy’s, TJX Com-panies, Capital One, Dow, The Goldring Family Foundation, Louisiana Pizza Kitchen Uptown, Coors Light, Rain Vodka, NOLA Media Group, Gambit, New Orleans Magazine, AmbushMag.com, and Where Y’At.

As the year draws to a close, I’d like to take a moment to look back at our successes over 2013. We recently held the 20th Anniversary Empowerment Conference, which brought together over 350 consum-ers and providers for a day of educational sessions and workshops around making treatment decisions for HIV and AIDS, the only event of it’s kind held annually in New Orleans.

Of course The Chevron NO/AIDS WALK was a great event as always, helping raise funds, and more importantly awareness to this disease and that we still have a long way to go in this fight.

This summer also saw the completion of construction and the grand opening of our Food For Friends Kitchen. The community kitchen will be jointly used by NO/AIDS Task Force’s Food For Friends program and First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans’ congregation to provide meals to those dealing with hunger and nutritional issues in our community.

NO/AIDS Food For Friends program will be using the facility primarily to prepare meals that are delivered to home-bound clients affected by HIV. Food For Friends previously operated a kitchen it the for St. Rose of Lima church building on Columbus Ave, but that site was lost during Hurricane Katrina.

We are so thrilled to have a kitchen again where we can provide nutritionally sound meals to people affected by HIV. With the complexities of HIV disease, along with the variety of medication therapies and numerous co-infections that come along with it, it’s important that we are able to have our own kitchen where a chef and nutritionist can ensure that clients have access to not just food, but meals tailored to their nutritional needs.

Late this summer, NO/AIDS Task Force was happy to bring the FACES program, formerly of Children’s Hospital, under the NO/AIDS umbrella. FACES, or Family Advocacy Care and Education Services, brings a long history and years of expertise in providing care and services to women, children and adolescents affected by HIV to the Task Force. We are thrilled to be able to welcome their dedicated staff to the NO/AIDS family and most importantly, preserve this valuable community resource for those that depend on it.

July of 2013 marked the beginning of NO/AIDS Task Force’s 30th year of providing care and services to our community. We hope that you will join us on February 7, 2014 at our 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner to mark this auspicious occasion as we look back over 30 emotional years as we rededicate ourselves to continuing this fight for years to come.

Sincerely,

Noel TwilbeckCEO, NO/AIDS Task Force

AIDSLaw began over 20 years ago as a volunteer-based organization, and still relies heavily volunteers to carry out its mission today. To recognize these important volunteer efforts, in 1995 AIDSLaw instituted the Pro Bono Publico Awards as its highest honor for service to AIDSLaw and the affected community.

The Annual AIDSLaw Pro Bono Publico awards gala took place on October 17th at the beautiful Atrium Ballroom at Galvez Restaurant, with sweeping views of the French Quarter and Mississippi River.

This year’s Pro Bono Publico awardees are Galen Hair of Varadi, Hair, and Checki and Asher Friend, Charles Reeves, Jr., Alexandra Clark-Layfield, and Mark Cun-ningham of Jones Walker, honored for the giving of their time and talents to protect the legal rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. The Teri Estrada Memorial awards went to Thomas Robichaux, and Bridget Lee, received posthumously by Bridget’s family, and both honored as advocates in the battle against HIV.

A very special thanks to our host firms who made the evening possible: The Law Offices of Tim Fields, Joseph Macaluso, Gerard P. Archer Attorney at Law, Jones Walker LLP, ASI Federal Credit Union, Judy Y. Barrasso, Delaney & Robb Attorneys at Law, Liskow & Lewis, and Talbot Historic Properties, as well as the amazing Pro Bono Event Committee!

NO/AIDS Hosted AIDS Quilt Panel-Making Workshop

NO/AIDS recently hosted an AIDS Quilt panel making workshop led by The NAMES PROJECT FOUNDA-TION. We reached out to the service provider community to partici-pate in creating new panels for individuals that they have worked with, knew or have served that had passed

away.

Quilt Panelmaker, Juanita Williams, who co-led the workshop explained, “We have all been touched by HIV/AIDS and by creating a panel for The Quilt, we, as a community, are honoring those we have lost and we are transforming that loss into something that offers hope and can keep others safe from this horrible disease.”

The AIDS Memorial Quilt was created one 3 x 6 foot panel at a time by more than 100,000 individuals from across the coun-try and around the world. With every-thing from teddy bears to wedding rings, Boy Scout badges to love letters, the more than 48,000 hand-made panels that comprise The Quilt are as varied as the individuals they honor and the people who created them. Each year, sections of The Quilt are presented in nearly 1,000 displays around the world -- in community centers, schools, places of worship, corporations, etc. -- in an effort to share the mes-sages of hope, healing and action found on The Quilt.

The worksop was sponsored by Chevron. Panels made at the workshop will be on view at Chevron’s Northpark offices close to World AIDS Day.

The night’s honorees (clockwise from top): Family of Bridget Lee,; Galen Hair; Charles Reeves Jr, Alexandra Clark-Layfield & Mark Cunningham; Thomas Robichaux.
