It was colourful and exciting just like Rio de Janeiro. Stay tuned for our own Olympics Day planned for next week. The flu season is upon us with many staff and children succumbing to the winter chills. It is timely to remember the basics of frequent hand washing, considerate coughing (into your elbow) practices to help prevent the spread of germs. Wolves and Sheep – Maths Solving Problem

Sheep and wolves is a fabulous problem to work collaboratively to solve. Some Legend and some Team Koru children have been having some success with this.

What we know: Wolves can eat any sheep that is in a direct line (not just the next door square – the whole line) from their square – vertical, horizontal and diagonal. Have fun!

A field is arranged 4 rows of 4 squares (16 in total). There are 3 wolves in the field and some sheep (more than 1), each in their own square. How many sheep can be placed on separate squares and be safe? Make sure you prove it!

More Wolves, More Sheep, More Fun! Now there are 5 rows of 5 squares (25 in total). The same ‘safe sheep’ rules apply. Can you place 5 wolves and 3 sheep, so that the sheep are safe?

Problem solving is what mathematicians do.

When children problem solve they get a chance to collaborate, to come up with creative

solutions and trial their ideas. It helps develop mathematical reasoning.

On Tuesday the 2nd of August we (Sally, Sam, Evie and Juliet), held a bake sale in the hall at lunch time. We sold lots of baking like, lolly cake, marshmallow slice and chocolate chip biscuits. The chocolate cake we had sold out really fast. At the end our profit was $302.20 for the SPCA. We also got a few blankets. We are really looking forward to going to the SPCA to give them the money and blankets.
