So much so, that the after-school care vans have been unable to park safely while collecting children. Cars coming in and out, blocking exits, children and parents taking short cuts on bikes and scooters – all this is a recipe for disaster! Please keep out of our staff car park, follow road rules and be safe when travelling around school. Next week is maths week and we are actively promoting visual maths, talk and debate so that children and families are having conversations about maths. Be prepared to friendly argue and justify your thinking to help others gain understanding and also to clarify your own thinking. Take turns to be the convincer and the sceptic. When you are the convincer your job is to be convincing! You will have justify your thinking. When you are the sceptic, don't be easily convinced. Make them justify their reason. Enjoy! Here is family maths problem for you to try. If you have young children, you might want to start with blocks or lego, etc. Squares to Stairs How many different ways can you see the stairs growing? Try and be as creative as you can. Think about using different colours to show the different ways it grows. After you've come up with as many ways of it growing as you can - what might the 10th figure look like? What figure would you be able to create if had 80 squares? What about 640?

The senior Kapa haka group has been very busy preparing for the 2017 Cultural Festival to be held at the Horncastle Arena next Wednesday 16th August. This year's event will have over 70 school's performing from all over Canterbury. The Cultural Festival has been held annually since 1981. This is the first time that our school has performed in the evening so it is a big deal for us. Go Hoon Hay! Thanks for taking part in the Safe Travel to School Survey. A copy of the results has been sent to you via email. A working party has been established to action the concerns that have been identified. Hopefully together we can ensure safe travel to and from school. We will soon be receiving 3,000 jazz apples from Raeward Fresh so thank you to our families for nominating and liking our nomination on facebook. We will be on-sharing our good fortune with neighbouring schools so we can all enjoy a healthy nibble. Thank you Raeward Fresh and everyone who helped........an apple a day..... Have a super week! Kids in Town

The "Kids in Town" event was held this week at the Art Gallery. Hoon Hay School was the only school performing and the children gave it their all to an appreciative audience of parents, grandparents, and visitors to the Art Gallery. Many thanks to the City Council for providing the transport and special thanks to the wonderful whānau who always support us so well.

What else do we do?

Sydney H is climbing her way to the top in rock climbing. From the start of this year, Sydney has been working hard to get into the NZ National Rock Climbing competition. She has been training 2, sometimes 3 times, a week and working hard to qualify. Sydney had to be in

the top 2 girls under twelve in Christchurch to go and needed to climb grade 16's clean. She was told a few weeks ago by her coach that she had qualified and is going to Auckland on the 19th August for the competition. Way to go Sydney – we wish you good luck at Nationals as you strive to the top of the wall.

Mya K and Abigail H, both recently at a tap dancing exam and did exceptionally

well! Great work girls!

SOUTH WEST ZONE WINTER TOURNAMENT The South West Zone Winter Tournament was held last Tuesday at Hagley Park. Our Netball Red, Football Red, Hockey Red and Hoon Hay Taniwha’s all played in some very competitive round robin tournaments. Tournament game times are very short but the competition is intense. Our children all did themselves and our school proud. Congratulations to all who represented our school. Hockey Red finished 5th in their competition, and the Taniwha’s team placed 3rd on the rugby fields. Netball Red were on fire winning all their games for the day which placed them in 1st position. Football Red had some great games and it came down to the wire as they were tied with another school for 1st place. It was an anxious wait while organisers had to go back and count of goal difference to see which team would win – and it was Hoon Hay! Winners are grinners and Hoon Hay was all smiles. Netball Red & Football Red will now represent the South West Zone and go on to play at the Central tournament on the 24th August (pp 29th/31st Aug) WAY TO GO HOON HAY YOU MAKES US PROUD

CENTRAL CROSS COUNTRY - ZONE SUCCESS The South West is shaping up as a strong sporting zone this year. When our children go on to central competitions they not only represent Hoon Hay school but also our South West Zone. At the Central Cross Country, held in late June, all individual placings are collated and the different zones are awarded an “overall placing”. Our Zone was placed 1st in the Year 6 Boys event, which included Sam H and we placed 3rd in the Year 6 Girls A team which included Sophie Y. Well Done to the South West Zone!

RAINBOW NETBALL TOURNAMENT Check out the following children’s new rainbow wrist bands. The team on the right won at a club netball tournament last weekend. Chloe A, Xanthe A, Sophie Y, Tabi C and Eva P all play netball for Cashmere netball club and were the only Yr 5/6 team at tournament to win the rainbow band - which involves sinking 64 goals during the tournament - way to go girls nice shooting!! Kamai P was filling in for a year 7/8 St Nicholas team. They earned a green wrist band for 32 goals. It’s great to see Hoon Hay children being active in the weekend.
