UPCOMING EVENTS

FROM THE DESK OF MRS. GINTER

A variety of activities…are helping to keep the winter doldrums at bay. Mother nature and Superintendent Broeren certainly helped the cause with

a well-timed, four-day weekend. For example, on March 1, sixth graders attended a panel discussion with several community volunteers. This activity incorporates the 6th grade ELA unit, Dealing with Disaster, with our

Academic and Career Planning (ACP) initiative. Students learned more about planning for and responding to emergencies and related career opportunities. The following people shared their expertise: Erman Blevins, Chief of Police WRPD; Mark Stickney, Wood County Emergency Management; Joe Terry, Director of Public Works for the City of WR; Pastor Dan DeRoche, Crossview Church; Eric Daven, School Resource Officer WRPD; Jennifer Duchrow, ER Paramedic/Nekoosa Ambulance; Craig Cook, National Guardsman; Lori Heideman, Dispatch Manager; Bob Bartek, Captain of the WRFD; Kathy Palm, Trauma/EMS Coordinator for Riverview Aspirus; and Brian Krzykowski, Lt. WRPD. On behalf of WRAMS, I would like to thank each of them for their time and their service to the community!

A MESSAGE FROM SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER DAVEN (WRPD)

With the recent national attention regarding school safety and some local incidents, I wanted to reassure parents and guardians that the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department along with the Wisconsin Rapids School District train and review emergency response policies and procedures on a regular basis. The recent false alarm at Lincoln High School demonstrated that local law enforcement respond quickly and appropriately while working very closely with school administration. Safety of students, staff and visitors to our schools remains a priority. Students should report misconduct or suspicious activity to staff, and it will be dealt with fairly and in a timely manner. Additionally, I encourage parents and guardians to contact me, the school, or use the STOPit app to report any concerns.

I am happy to report that on January 29 K-9 Officers from the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department and the Wood County Sheriff's Department, along with their K-9 partners, conducted a locker sweep of the Wisconsin Rapids Area Middle School and no items of contraband or concern were located.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

2018 WRAMS SPELLING BEE

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the WRAMS Spelling Bee in January. Brett Hartjes was the winner with Logan Maciejewski taking the runner up spot. On February 21, Brett went on to become the runner up at the Regional Spelling Bee that was held at Washington Elementary School.

2018 WRAMS GEOGRAPHY BEE RESULTS

Congratulations to the finalists that participated in the National Geographic Bee finals held at WRAMS in January. Special recognition goes to winner Emily Schiferl (6), Sarah Panzer (7) the runner-up and Dalton Petersen (7) for placing 3rd. There was a record-setting 21 rounds of questions before a champion was declared! Other finalists included Skye Bignell, Ava Etheridge, Connor LaMarche, Alivia Meshak, Canon Plawman, Kao Thao and Elizabeth Weiland. The ten finalists were determined after answering seven preliminary rounds of questions about national and global geography, natural forces, and history in their social studies classes.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the National Geographic Bee. The competition is open to students in grades four through eight and is held in more than 10,000 schools nationwide.

Emily will take an online exam to determine if she qualifies for the state championship to be held in Madison, WI on April 6. Outstanding job, Emily!

Congratulations to all of the WRAMS finalists.

TITANIC RESEARCH & VIDEO PRODUCTION PROJECT

The sixth grade students in Mrs. Grover’s language arts classes spent a couple weeks working on a project that required them to conduct research on topics related to the Titanic and produce a video based on their research. Once students completed their research, they had to find pictures to illustrate the facts and information recorded in their notes. The last stage of the project was to create a video using pictures, voice recordings, sound effects and music. Students then presented their videos to their classmates.

What Makes a Lunch: A Parent’s Guide to Offer vs Serve

- Each day, students are offered a lunch containing the following food choices:

Meat or Meat Alternate, Grain, Fruit, Vegetable and Milk.

- Out of the 5 food groups your student is offered, they must choose at least 3 food

groups for their meal. One of the food groups must be a fruit or vegetable.

- If your child comes home & says they didn’t get enough to eat at lunch, ask if

they took all of their fruit & veggie choices!
