Spirits and surroundings are in har-mony as we get together to celebrate IIMT’s transformation into Vedatya

at our new campus. My good wishes to you. In this fourteen years journey we went through a intellectual fermenta-tion. This kind of ferment is the very rea-son Vedatya has the capacity to change. Because we ask questions, because we embrace doubt, because we seek out uncomfortable truths, Vedatya/IIMT has propelled once unimaginable achieve-ments, in no small measure of what I call ‘the role of all stakeholders in compelling this institution to live up to its professed ideals.’ The change, that brought us to our new Vedatya campus. A new birth of IIMT. Vedatya is born. Vedatya will en-dure - as Vedatya changes. The spirit and legacy of IIMT lives in Vedatya. Now, with milestones passed and revelry conclud-ed, I thought I would share some reflec-tions on the events of the past academic year and on the progress we continue to make together. We announced a partner-ship with IHG – a meaningful interface with industry. A new self independent post graduate program in Revenue Man-agement was initiated. Good placements nationally and internationally validated our commitment with students. We suc-cessfully collaborated with IHG to set up first international training hotel –Holiday Inn –in India, at Vedatya Campus. If it was an academic year of celebrating the past, this year will also be one of looking to the future and launching new initiatives, new partnerships, and new spaces that will strengthen Vedatya for future. We will in-troduce new initiatives for learning and teaching develop innovative approaches to teaching and to share more broadly the best in established and emerging methods with faculty across our Schools.

We will announce a partnership with a new international university that will en-able us to embrace the promise of learn-ing for our students while sharing our knowledge more widely with the world. And we also have a dream to open the Vedatya Innovation lab, a hub where stu-dent inventors and entrepreneurs from across the institution and industry can work closely with faculty and with mem-bers of the broader innovation commu-nity to turn their ideas into products and services. As we move deeper into 21st century, we reaffirm commitments that will stand us in good stead, by progress-ing with plans to transform, but ensur-ing the preeminence of all our cherished resources- all stakeholders. At heart, this institution is about you people. This campus – our new home- would provide ample space for students and faculty to gather and collaborate. “The books stand open and the gates unbarred.” The final line of Seamus Heaney’s Villanelle for an Anniversary, is a resonant reminder of our highest purposes. Through the examples I have highlighted in Vedatya Times and many more achievements that distinguished the past academic year, we have perpetuated knowledge to poster-ity, expanded the circle of inclusion, and imagined a world improved by our indi-vidual and collective efforts. Looking now towards the culmination of new purpose, we begin again, guided by our history and inspired by one another.

The coming year will also involve intensi-fied focus on the elements of a more pur-poseful student engagement for Vedatya as a whole. We aim to maximize our intel-lectual footprint internationally without creating a physical footprint larger than we need. And we aim to identify some compelling foci for coordinated academic

efforts abroad, even as our faculty and students pursue a range of international activities already vast in their variety. As our institutional opportunities for global engagement continue to multiply, it will be essential to undertake them with a clear eye on how they advance our larger academic aims and values, and how what we do abroad can complement and en-hance what we do close to home.

We should measure our progress by how, over time, we shape and contribute to hu-man understanding in its fullest sense, how we attend not only to the immediate but to the timeless. New programs, new modes of teaching, new buildings, and new appointments are not ends in them-selves. They ultimately matter insofar as they advance our enduring academic pur-poses—to educate students to lead lives of meaning and value, to better fathom the world we inhabit, to conserve and in-terpret the knowledge of generations, to marry rigor and imagination in the pur-suit of new ideas, to serve society in ways a community of learning singularly can.

And so, looking ahead to the coming year, I hope we will focus not just on the lat-est initiative or headline. I hope we will look forward to the quiet moment in the library that leads to an intriguing idea. The dining hall conversation that prompts a common endeavor, or change a long-held preconception, or creates a lifelong friendship. The office encounter that generates a bright idea for streamlin-ing a complicated process. The crafting of an essay whose argument hangs together and whose expression rings true. The stage performance of our cultural ex-travaganza CELEBRATIONS that moves its audience beyond words. The close reading of an abstruse text or the pains-taking solution of a vexing equation that feeds our sense of wonder—that reminds us why we have come together, as people have come together at Vedatya, to pursue our curiosity with passion and without bounds. This has been a year of change for us. We have an appetite to experiment with new ways of doing things—a recog-nition that Vedatya’s most enduring tradi-tion is its capacity for thoughtful change. We are committed to engage the larger world and to help meet its challenges in ways that an academic institution distinc-tively can. And in the process to pursue ideas along pathways unblocked by barri-ers of discipline or professional field—to experience Vedatya less as an assemblage of discrete parts and more as an encom-passing and navigable whole.

Study Trip to Old Delhi 1st March, 2014

The Hospitality School at Vedatya or-ganised a study trip to Old Delhi for the 2013 batch students on 1st March 2014. This trip was organized to allow the students to observe how the vari-ous tourism sub sectors play out in the context of a destination that is rich in heritage, culture and offers unique so-cio-economic perspectives. The objec-tive was to allow the students to draw from their experiences during the visit, connecting the learning with taught theory.

The students enjoyed a Delhi Metro ride from Gurgaon to Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. Post a small briefing, the students accompanied by Prof. Munjal, Associate Dean & Head School of Hos-pitality, Mr. Debpriya De, Sr. Lecturer, Mr. Sanjay Sharma, Asst Professor and Mr. Anmole Singh, Asst Manager Place-ments, commenced their walk into the streets of Old Delhi. The unique setting provided by the Mughal era architec-ture dating back to the 15th century

and the contrast provided by modern day living was quite evident. Landmark sites that were part of the trip’s iter-nary were Sis Ganj Sahib Gurudwara, Jama Masjid, Itr Wali Gali, Pranthe Wali Gali, Meena Bazar and many other nar-row streets representing the rich and diverse culture of the walled city. Stu-dents saw many international visitors enjoying the food, culture and heritage of the area, and a few even interacted with them.

Lunch was hosted at the famous Ka-rim’s, where students and faculty en-joyed local culinary delights. As the day ended, it was soon time to head back. Students found the trip quite enjoyable, and were able to understand the is-sues and challenges that the area faces. This will allow them to reflect on the same and offer recommendations on how this fabulous tourist destination can gain from tourism in a sustainable manner.

Study Trip to Sulabh International on 7th March 2014

The School of Management at Vedatya organised a highly inspiring trip to Su-labh International for its UG and PG students on March 7th, 2014. Faculty members Monica Bhardwaj, Dr Kalpana Maheshwari, Neetu Ahmed and Jagjeet Singh from placement office accompa-nied the students on the trip.

Sulabh is an Indian based social service organization which works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education. The organization counts 50,000 volunteers and is the largest non-profit organization in India.

Sulabh is running a school and vocation-al training center with the objective to liberate and elevate the status of scaven-gers. Our students got the opportunity to visit both the school and vocational training center and had a close interac-tion with them. Sulabh international is

also known for its technological innova-tions in sanitation facilities.India faces high mortality and morbidity due to lack of awareness and access to basic facili-ties sanitation, particularly the people in low income segment. The Sulabh mu-seum informed the students about the environmental and cultural influences of sanitation issues and the sanitation technologies put into place by Sulabh international.

The students also interacted with Dr Pathak ,the sociologist, social activist, and Founder of Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement and is consid-ered as the a pioneer for social reform.

The visit was highly eWducational, in-formative and deeply touching looking at the flip side of life and the struggle and passion of Sulabh and their team to fight for the good cause and enable a respectable life for the underprivileged and a clean environment for our society.

Personality Development session on 27 August 2014

Personality development session on 3 September 2014

Communication is a strong method of self awareness and marketing oneself in today’s world of expression era. On 27th Aug, 2014 first session of PD class started with students giving presenta-tions. Presentations is a powerful tool for presenting oneself in professional and personal sense in today’s world of digital age Students of first trimes-ter of PGDM (AICTE) also attended the session to have firsthand experi-ence of giving presentations. Students of PGDM (OBU) and PGDM (AICTE) of third semester gave presentations from diverse field of topics relevant for general awareness. In the age of new medical inventions for counter acting life style disease and increasing life ex-pectancies, stem cells use and storage has become a hot topic for companies and researchers in medical profession.

Continuing last week’s presentations session, the Personality Development Class on Sep 3, 2014, started with the presentation by First year students, Ms. Amita and Ms. Priyanka of PGDM (AI-CTE) 2014 batch. The topic for presen-tation was “Emotional Branding” which was very interesting and students and

Ms. Kanika from PGDM (OBU) and Ms. Akansha Shah from PGDM (AICTE) presented this knowledgeable topic and need of hour, as very less is known about it. As petrol, diesel disadvantages and its effect on our environment is now becoming one of the concerns of a common man, environmentalists, gov-ernment agencies and business world, Mr. Samir from PGDM (AICTE) pre-

sented a very apt topic of our era, i.e., Alternative Fuel like ethanol for future and explained very well how it is use-ful for coming generations in compari-son to petrol and diesel. Mr. Mohit Saini from PGDM (OBU) and Mr. Ajay Kourav and Mr. Prashant from PGDM (AICTE) presented the topic Value added ser-vices - the concept increasingly used by companies as marketing strategies

to increase business. Ms. Varsha and Mr. Shakti presented a very interesting topic Cloud DMS which is very relevant for corporate as manual storing of data and files was a hurdle in the age of fast communication and has become past in handling and storing data. Overall it was very good attempt from students of second year of PGDM (AICTE) & (OBU) with minor fumbles in presentation skills. Some students also gave Prezi Presentations which they learned from last year from a workshop conducted by Vedatya. It was a good insightful experience for first year students of PGDM (AICTE) also. For the next ses-sion, it was decided for other students also to give presentations on few more topics to gain confidence in expression and themselves and develop personal-ity into wholesome.

faculty members had an insightful dis-cussion after that presentation. Mr. Ari-jit Das, Mr. Manish Sharma and Mr. Mo-hit Bhandari presented very well their topic “Innovation”. As the topic itself is many times misunderstood by many, students had a good discussion on the terms like reverse innovation etc. As social networking is unavoidable for today’s generation, Role of Social Net-working in Business was explored and touched upon in the form of presenta-tion by Mr. Shresth and Mr. Pradeep which was very well presented. A very relevant topic is Corporate Social Re-sponsibility for today’s corporate hous-es which was presented by Ms. Jyoti and

Ms. Preeti of PGDM 2013-15 batch. As for some students of first year of PGDM (AICTE), it was their first presentation, but whole group presented very well their presentations and observations in the form of feedback was given by the faculty members, Ms. Neetu Ahmed and Dr. Arvind.

Gastronomic Tour of Old Delhi by Vedatya Students on 9 November, 2014

The Hospitality School at Vedatya or-ganized another culinary expedition to Chandni Chowk, this time for the 2011 batch students on 9th November, lead by Chef Sanjay Sharma. The visit was to experience the taste and ex-plore the variety of authentic Old Delhi street food and Nawabi cuisine. The students strolled across the Paranthe Wali Gali to the biggest and the best-known mosque in India, Jama Masjid. The busy by lanes of Chandni Chowk can be traced back to the 1700’s and so are the well known and established eateries. Some of the famous outlets like the Natraj sweet shop, the Pt. Gaya Prasad Shiv Charan Paranthe Wala are

six generation old and still stand the best. The Vedatya food connoisseurs went through the paranthe wali gali, khari baoli, Jama masjid, gali khajanchi, meena bazaar, and the lane opposite to Jama Masjid where Al Jawar and Ka-rims had made a landmark. Towards the end of the trip, the students walked down to Chowri Bazaar to savor delica-cies like Daulat ke chaat, badam milk and nizami paan. It was indeed an in-credible experience for all the students where they indulged in the irresistible charm of the Old City, its monuments, streets and old stalls giving the most authentic feel of that era.

Vedatya - IHG Cricket Tournament on 4th April, 2014

Many congratulation to team Vedatya for a spectacular win against InterCon-tinental Hotels Group (IHG) team.

On Friday, the 4th of April Vedatya’s new campus witnessed an interest-ing cricket clash between Vedatya and Crowne Plaza, Greater Noida, an IHG team. Vedatya captain Shailender Singh Negi after winning the toss put IHG to bat. The IHG inning did not take off well as the first four batsmen including the captain Abhishek Verma were bowled out at a mere score of 4 runs on board. Meeting the expectations of the captain, Pranav Mishra (BBA) with his pace and bounce struck early wickets putting IHG on back foot, with the exceptional bowling from Vedatya bowlers, the score after five overs was 16 runs for 5 wickets, however the partnership be-tween Shahrukh Khan (26) and Balbir Singh (14) took the score to 102 runs.

In pursuit of the target, Vedatya’s open-ing batsmen Rohit Ojha (BBA) while trying to place the ball over the third man lost his wicket on the very first ball. The second wicket partnership of Jatin Chabbra (15, PG) and Shailender Singh (21) gave Vedatya a good base to chase the winning runs however IHG kept striking wickets in regular inter-vals making it an interesting chase. While Vedatya lost seven wickets and the required run rate was almost 6 runs an over, the game looked equally bal-anced. It was Abhishek Saini (PG) with his crucial knock of unbeaten 23 runs with 3 sixes and a 4, that took the game away from IHG.

Both the captains received the trophies from Mr. Amit Kapur and Mr. Sand-eep Munjal, the man of the match was awarded to Balbir Singh (IHG) for a 5 wicket haul that kept Vedatya on their toes. The game ended with a sumptu-ous lunch hosted by Vedatya at the new campus.

The event offered a unique opportunity for Vedatya to engage with our industry partners and added another welcome dimension to our special relationship with IHG as an IHG academy.
