A Note from the Facilitators: There was much excitement expressed about the work ahead for our PPPIF when we met during the NAEYC Annual Conference on November 20, 2015 from 6-8PM. There was an announcement regarding a collaboration between PPPIF and the MIT Center for the Study of Aging for Intergenerational Play Symposium in Boston during the spring of 2016. Lynn Hartle distributed copies of the newest edition of Connections that she and Karen Lindeman produced with guest editors Marcia Nell and Walter Drew. work ahead for our PPPIF when we met during the NAEYC Annual Conference on November 20, 2015 from 6-8PM. The minutes were approved from the 2014 business meeting and then all those that attended the meeting conducted short introductions.

Kent Chrisman and Donna Couchenour shared the completion of their work for The Sage: Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education, which has a strong focus on play.

Lynn reported on how to access the newly designed PPPIF website at: https://pppconnections.wordpress.com/

Several members then shared about their specific sessions highlighting play, attendance, and responses from attendees. We also discussed the future in regards to play in the lives of children and our responsibility to that calling.

As as side note Jim Johnson shared that Jim Christie, a vital member of the PPPIF community passed away earlier this fall. His work in play and literacy will be remembered and the possibility of creating an award that would honor him was discussed for consideration.

We presented Lynn Cohen with a Certificate of Appreciation for being a founding member of PPPIF and for all her hard work over the years to our organization. We also presented our annual awards for the following for 2015 with the following recipients receiving each of these awards: Edgar Klugman Award – Dorothy Sluss; Patricia Monighan Nourot Award - Marcia Nell; and the Emerging Play Scholar Award – Lindsey Robey.

The committees met during the last part of the evening with a look toward the future with the focus on ways to become actively involved in PPPIF. Please read over these committee reports and if you weren’t able to join during this year’s meeting, please contact the committee chairs and volunteer to assist in their plans:

Research Committee: John Sutterby ([email protected]) and Marcia Nell ([email protected])Our goal is to write annotated bibliographies for play studies with a focus this year on specific studies of play and cognitive development. If you would like to volunteer to write an annotated bibliography, then please contact one of the chair persons.

Practice Committee: Ruth Gurgis ([email protected])In our Practice committee we discussed the possibility

of being able to present more hands on and interactive research that would allow educators to take back not only the experience of hearing our research but taking part of the presentation. Allowing them to become participants in these presentations would give attendees a larger awareness of the importance play and the feasibility of it in the classroom. We further discussed the option of perhaps modeling how play could be properly facilitated and scaffolded in the sessions days we are given to our attendees and how we can make the session more educational and teacher friendly with the

materials we can bring in. The discussion also included a bit of policy and how it is currently affecting what our early childhood practice truly looks like as oppose to what we are trying to set precedence for.

We would like to continue to investigate and thus present a collaborate unit on play or a symposium to use as a guiding session on how each discipline and thus different perspectives can be brought into play in the early childhood field while adhering to current policy practices.

Vision Committee: Jim Johnson ([email protected])The visions committee discussed the desirability of drafting a letter to the National in the near future indicating our intention of writing a PPPIF ‘position paper’ on play. This would be in addition to separate “action plan” statements for different audiences( e.g., principals, parents, etc.) . We also discussed play standards. This would be in contrast to academic standards and bring attention to the importance of play in the lives of young children. We need to begin to dialogue the pros and cons of defining, articulating and advocating for play standards (versus play assessment for improving play). In sum, the visions committee work includes that we need to work on the letter, the position paper and the action plan papers, and the question of play standards. As chair of the visions committee, I invite PPPIF members to contact me (whether or not you were at the meetings in Orlando or plan to be at the one in L.A. in 2016) for further information and/or to express interest in joining in the planned work of the committee this year.

Policy Committee: Deb Lawrence ([email protected]) The group discussed the Quiz questions that we have been creating for Facebook. The title of the Quiz is , Does your child have a play deficit? The Group will post the questions to the PPPIF Interest Forum Listserve by the end of middle of January for input and then create the Facebook Quiz to post by the beginning of April.

Communication and Technology Committee: The Communications and Technology Subcommittee meeting followed up regarding a whole group discussion regarding how NAEYC does support PPP in some ways, but does NOT support a position statement on play.

NAEYC supports PPP with space, accepted play presentations at the Annual conference, and space for the PPP annual meeting.

Since NAEYC does NOT support a play position statement, one of the suggestions was made by Kent Christman. He suggested that PPP develop some short statements about play, perhaps Action Plans; each one focused for particular audiences. He drew a diagram to show us:

Lynn suggested for the Spring 2016 PPP Connections newsletter, the editors solicit to selected members with respective expertise in each of these above topics to each submit an article to PPP Spring 2016 newsletter.

Joan Almon (http://www.allianceforchildhood.org/) met with Lynn during the subcommittee meeting and stated that seemed like a good suggestion for the focus the Spring 2016 PPP Connections. This newsletter can be used as specific information and an interim step (even an outline for a Position statement) to present to NAEYC as important to inform and advocate for play for children and families. We agreed to invite a PPP member, Michael Patte ([email protected]) to help Karen and Lynn guide this issue and Michael accepted the invitation.

Lynn suggested that before all break for the holidays, Lynn, Karen and Michael conference call to develop a plan for next steps for the Spring 2016 PPP issue of Connections.
