Sever’s disease is a common cause of heel pain in active children at around 9 years old for girls and 11 years old for boys. Sever’s disease occurs as a result of growth plate changes between the Achilles tendon and calcaneous (heel bone), It is calcaneal apophysitis. Cause of Sever’s disease Sever’s Disease is a result of poor biomechanics, growth in leg length and activity. During a child’s growth, bone growth will occur prior to muscle growth. This results in really tight muscles. Prior to adolescence, a child’s foot also does not have the bony stability of an adult’s foot. These features commonly create a foot that over pronates (commonly referred to as rolling in). So as the Achilles Tendon stretches it puts tension on the growth plates in the heel. As the foot functions along the ground the tendon and calcaneus are pulled in different directions creating an inflammation commonly called apophysitis. There is no evidence to suggest that Sever’s Disease causes any long-term problems or complications.
Symptoms of Sever’s disease The pain and symptoms of Sever’s are commonly confused with Achilles Tendonitis, however, in Severe’s Disease the symptoms are more localised to the back of the heel bone. These symptoms are:
Pain at the heel. Heel pain is present during activity, however, is worse after causing the child to limp.
Pain is exacerbated by a lateral crunch test.
Factors that contribute to Sever’s disease:
Physical activity – Actvity that involves explosive power tends to aggravate the condition
External factor-Hard surfaces, poor fitting shoes and unstable surfaces like sand will affect the symptoms associated with severe’s Disease.
Poor biomechanics- Children who have flatter feet tend to develop worsening symptoms
Treatment of Sever’s disease At Erica Dash Podiatry we are trained in a number of modalities to treat Severs Disease, including METs massage to manage muscle dysfunction, soft tissue work involving gentle massage, strengthening and stretching exercises. We also have exclusivity to a Podaitech Sever’s orthotic which is specifically designed to treat and manage Sever’s Disease.
If you would like to discuss further treatment options, please call Erica Dash Podiatry for an appointment today on 43670177. 10% discount if you mention this article.
