When this happens, part of the Sun’s light is blocked. The sky slowly gets dark as the moon moves in front of the Sun. When the moon and Sun are in a perfect line, it is called a total eclipse. The phases of the Moon depend on its position in relation to the Sun and Earth. As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we see the bright parts of the Moon’s surface at different angles. These are called “phases” of the Moon. There are 8 Moon phases; New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. 5-6M will be presenting their Moon Phases learning at assembly next week. Moon Phases 5-6M have been using one of the Primary Connections Science kits to investigate ‘Earths Place in Space. We have been using the kit to firstly understand the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun. We found out that the Earth, which is the third planet from the Sun, takes 24 hours to rotate or spin around. This is what causes day and night. As the Earth rotates, it also revolves around the Sun. The Earth’s path around the Sun is called it’s orbit. It takes the Earth one year, or 365 1/4 days, to completely orbit the Sun. As the Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moon’s orbit lasts 27 1/2 days, but because the Earth keeps moving, it takes the Moon two extra days, 29 1/2, to come back to the same place in our sky. Sometimes during their orbits, the Moon and the Earth form a line with the Sun. When this happens, an eclipse occurs. There are two kinds of eclipse - lunar and solar. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the Sun and the moon, blocking part of the Sun’s light from reaching the moon. During a lunar eclipse, you will see the Earth’s shadow on the moon. In a solar eclipse, the moon moves

The Final Countdown“Yippee”! Cheered the class as we counted down the days left until we depart for our excursion to the Hungry Caterpillar this week. The students of 1-2C have been extremely excited! Leading up to our excursion, 1-2C have been looking at many Eric Carle books, including ‘The very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybug’ and ‘The –Mixed up Chameleon’. We have used these text to implement and explore adjectives and sizzling starts, and ways we can use them in our creative writing to engage our readers. “Roar”! Bellowed the yellow and blue polka-dot dinosaur as he ran quickly towards the cave. Shhh! Said the teacher to the very noisy class. Pop! Went the helium balloon at the crazy hat party. These are some of the great sizzling starts the students of 1-2C have developed. Over the past week we have been investigating the text ‘Mister Seahorse’ by Eric Carle. One of the reasons Eric Carle books are so appealing to children is that they are visually stimulating. I love his use of colour and I wanted to try and capture that in our visual art. During our visual arts lesson, the students’ developed their own wonderful seahorse paintings. We used water colours to recreate our own Mister Seahorse. We looked at the colour wheel and how we can combine colours to create new exciting colours. These wonderful creations will be on display in our classroom. Please feel free to visit and check-out what our little Picasso’s can do!

Preschool RAP with our Buddies Preschool have been enjoying their RAP (Reading Aloud with Preschool) program with their buddies. Each week the preschoolers meet up with their Year 5-6 buddies. The buddies help preschoolers choose a book and teach us how to borrow from the library. Our buddies read the book to us and have a focus for that week. So far we have focused on what the illustrator and author do; the title of the story, what the writing on the back of the book is for as well as predicting what the story might be about looking at the cover of the book.

Preschool really enjoy this time at the library with their buddies and look forward to it each week. Year 5 and 6 are doing a fabulous job and are excellent role models for the preschoolers. This program runs throughout the year and is a very successful part of our transition to school and literacy program. A big thank you to Miss Toop, Mrs Madden and the students in Years 5 and 6. New sports team uniforms on theway!A huge thankyou to the P&C (and canteen) for the donation to help meet the cost of the new team-sports shirts and shorts. It is greatly appreciated and will make our teams all the prouder to represent Tweed Heads South.

3-4N Singing ScientistsThe students in 3-4N have been working well in class and have been very committed to their studies and learning in all areas of the Australian Curriculum. The dedication and effort the students have shown through being totally engaged in literacy and numeracy sessions is the foundation for achieving better results in all learning areas. A liking for experimenting with magnets and the extra tuition offered by the Southern Cross University Science Department was graciously received by the Stage Two cohort at Tweed Heads South Public School. The conversations in class around what magnets can do, what they are used for and how they create magnetic fields have been astounding. Stage Two would like to take this opportunity to thank the Southern Cross University Science Unit for its preparation of resource materials and teaching and during a five-week period.
