50th International Chemistry Olympiad 2018

Well done to James Booker, a First Year A Level Chemistry student, who took part in the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad run by the Royal Society of Chemistry. James only narrowly missed the Bronze category by two marks in the test paper.

Verelle, a Hair Salon and Barbers in Fareham tasked the Level 3 Year 2 Business students with a live client brief, which was an excellent opportunity for them to work with a local employer. The students had to work together to produce ideas for Verelle to use within the salon and provide new ways for them to attract customers. They then presented this in a formal business pitch to the Director and Salon Manager and have all had

excellent feedback from the employer. The project enabled them to develop a number of work ready skills such as teamwork, communication and pitching.

The St Vincent College 2018 Debating Team are celebrating, following in the footsteps of the 2017 and 2016 teams by winning the annual Inter-College Debating Competition organised by Gosport & Fareham Friends of the Earth. The team had to beat off stiff competition from Fareham College, Havant & South Downs College and Highbury College. The competition involved six rounds with a range of topics including the environment, energy and earth’s natural resources.Careers & HE Manager, Alistair Lambon said, ‘Once again we were extremely proud of the students. What was a real strength was the team spirit they showed and the professional manner in which they conducted themselves. I must also thank Friends of the Earth for giving the opportunity to all the students to learn lots of new skills and build their confidence in public speaking.

As part of their preparation for an exam in June, second year A Level English Language students visited the University of Portsmouth’s Library. After a ride across the ferry and a short walk around the campus buildings, students had a chance to grab a drink at the café and explore the library with its cosy study dens. We were allocated our own IT room as a base. Dedicated staff from the library’s team talked us through their resources – how to use the catalogue to find books, journals and newspapers either physically in the library or on their vast online resources. Our students set about researching their chosen topics set this year by the exam board for the Investigating Language unit which included:

Foundation Degree teacher and students recently worked together with young people at a London Sixth Form, Our Lady’s in Stamford Hill Hackney, to develop some interactive resources promoting equality and diversity.

Using Interactive Technology to Promote Equality and Diversity

It was the first time this has been done using Skype and it was very successful. It encouraged the students to put what they had learnt in class into practice in an exciting and dynamic way – we hope links will continue.

Caribbean English, Scottish English, charity advertising and how women share personal information. Students took the opportunity to put their research skills to the test and came back with armfuls of useful photocopies to continue highlighting and summarising later in their own time.If you have a photo identity card, any member of the public is welcome to visit the library. We were pleasantly surprised to hear about their forward thinking approach with their 24/7 opening hours where talking, drinking and snacks are allowed – although there is a silent floor for those who prefer to study in peace and quiet of course!

The Level 2 Uniformed Public Services students undertook their work placement this year with the Army Air Corps. This involved two days at Longmoor Army Training Camp and one day at AAC HQ at Middle Wallop. Students got involved in various activities such as Camouflage & Concealment, Communications using

the 'Bowman' radio system and firing the SA80 assault rifle on the indoor firing range. Day three included a visit to the home of the Army Air Corps where students were introduced to the Apache helicopter. In short, it was a unique experience and our thanks go to WO2 Old of the AAC for arranging this event.

Sport Relief 2018

Fun Run in aid of Sports ReliefThis year our Year 2 BTEC Sports students organised a Fun Run which took place on the 23 March 2018 to raise money and awareness for Sports Relief. At 8am we met – prepared 3 vans and lined up - the air horn blew at 8:55 to start the event and we set off out through the Clock Tower, with Bay House and Crofton students assisting us on a journey that would see us visiting around 20 schools. All students stayed motivated during the day and we ran back through the Clock Tower at 3 pm, this time with Brune Park pupils. We had two famous faces joining us during the event, Caroline Dineage to start the run at Newtown and the Mayor of Gosport to end the event at St Johns. Tom Beresford (Chair of the Event) said: ‘The event was very successful as we raised nearly twice the amount we wanted to and had over 5,000 children involved. The event ran smoothly and was enjoyable for everyone who took part and we managed to count nearly 13,500,000 steps towards the National ‘Billion Step Challenge’. The schools said that our event was ‘well organised and the children loved it’. They also said that they appreciated ‘all our hard work and it was great to work with all our staff ’. This event was part of Unit 23 Event Planning, where the students had to plan and run an event with tutor help to gain a pass, or without tutor help to achieve a merit or distinction. It’s fair to say, this is well and truly work in the distinction grade band and a fantastic experience for all involved #learningbydoing.

The Annual Vaulting Displays took place in February this year; the staff and participants arrived at 7am to prepare for the first performance at 10:20am. Another followed in the afternoon and the day finished with our first ever evening performance at 7 pm.This was an exciting show as it was full of our parents, school children from Alverstoke Junior school and Sports Leaders UK representative, Kat Heathers, who presented the College with a “Leadership Academy” Award to formally recognise all the community work we do.

students, Bridgemary, Brune Park and Copnor pupils. The event was not only successful in terms of spectator numbers (over 1,200 this year) but we had a final section that was fully interactive for all age groups from the audience. All the children said they enjoyed the vaulting and all the dancing at the beginning and end. The students worked towards all of this for 3 months to cover Unit 9 Individual Practical Sport – then the write up for coursework. We would like to thank all the spectators and support we had to run the event especially Uniformed Public Services and Sports students who marshalled and collected our guests from local schools.

£1 to wear red and enjoyed a round robin of activities including making a healthy drink, boccia, pub games and sumo wrestling.

There was also a vast team behind the scenes organising lights, sound, hospitality, bookings, programmes and additional training sessions. This is another example of what makes the Sport course at St Vincent Outstanding. The students and the staff working together. See you next year!

An additional bonus this year was the pupils from Alverstoke also had the opportunity to take part in climbing, tennis, football, Olympic sports etc run by our Year 1 Community Sports Leaders.Three more big performances followed the next day for Brockhurst, St Johns and Newtown schools. We also greeted other St Vincent

We were delighted to secure a recent visit from the University of Portsmouth Simulation Vehicle. The Health & Social Care team work closely with the School of Health Sciences and Social Work to provide insightful and practical experiences for our students. Within the vehicle, students and staff had the opportunity to practice their skills in physical assessment and clinical

examination, as well as responding to deterioration in the patient’s condition with Apollo, the simulated manikin. Clinical practitioners who teach across the ODP (Operating Department Practitioner degree), Nursing and Paramedic Science degrees also hosted academic lectures in college on detailed pathways, degrees and careers that the University of Portsmouth offer.

Lucy Dobson (Lead Technician, School of Health Sciences and Social Work, University of Portsmouth) commented: ‘The students were really enthusiastic and were fully engaged. They were open and genuinely interested in the vast array of options that we have here at the University. It was so beneficial to be able to bring the University to you; hopefully allowing the students to feel that University is possible for them and an avenue open to them should they want it’.

Community liaison links with our partner University is an integral part of our courses in Health & Social Care. The date is booked again for 2019 for the vehicle to return.

They have all made a tremendous effort and should be rightly proud of themselves for helping others.

On behalf of the Student Council and Channell, we would like to thank everyone who took part in the day, either by donating or wearing purple, and we are again grateful to the whole college community for coming together to support the day.

In February A Level Media and Level 3 Business students went to the Warner Bros studios in Watford for the making of Harry Potter Studio Tour. For the students it was an opportunity to see how the blockbuster movies were made and gave a chance to see the props and sets that were used in the films. It was also a perfect opportunity to discover how effective marketing techniques were used in the promotion of these films to ensure they were a worldwide success.Students were able to ride a broomstick, venture into the forbidden forest, try some Butter Beer and board the Hogwart's Express. Students told us that they found the day fascinating as most had never had the opportunity to go to this attraction before and that they loved being able to see and experience the magic of movie making and marketing.

This half term the Student Council and Level 1 Public Services student, Channell McVey, raised money for Epilepsy Awareness by encouraging everyone to wear purple and donate money on 26th March. Keeping with the theme, the Student Council also helped Channell by organising a purple bake sale, with all proceeds going towards the charity. This, alongside generous donations from the staff and students, all contributed towards the grand total of £192.01 for Epilepsy Awareness.

The 29th March not only marked the end of another term at college, but also Wear a Hat Day 2018. This day aims to promote awareness for the symptoms of brain tumours and raise money for research and support. Alongside Paula Lamport in the Welfare Team, the Student Council organised our very own Wear a Hat Day. Students and staff were encouraged to wear any kind of hat, whether silly or practical, and to donate money for the charity. In the refectory there was also a photo booth set up and anyone could have their photo taken and emailed to them for a small donation. Overall, the college managed to raise £49.23 for the charity, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who took part, we saw some wonderful hats!

A Level Creative Writing students, Harry Adams and Maxx Baker, both got entries published in the Young Writers 'Welcome to Wonderland' collection after winning a contest. They were tasked with creating a fictional world before writing a mini saga, a story in just 100 words, inspired by their world.

The Vocational Learning Area are now working closely with Gosport & Fareham Job Centre offering an NVQ Level 1 Introduction course in Health & Social Care for Children and Adults. This will give better prospects for employment opportunities at the end of the course where the students will potentially progress to their Level 2 qualification in the future. This has also resulted in a fantastic opportunity to deliver Customer Service NVQ’s in the summer for the five new stores opening including Marks & Spencer and Home Bargains in Heritage Way, Gosport. We are looking at delivering up to 200 courses resulting in job opportunities for the local Community.
