Gale Waldron, A Gale Force

by Margaret Morton*

One of the mo t influential members of the Loudoun arts scene has died.

" ale wa both a vi ionary and a doer, a sometimes rare combination," said photographer Sarah Huntington her friend and collaborator of 30 y ars.

They hared a l ve of history, u ing the people of Loud un as their template. Their book, "In Their Own Words," was successful, with Huntington's photograph· providing the visual images for the vignette f county life related by Waldron.

Waldron was a tireless organizer and good at "doing all those nitty gritty things that make art happen " Huntington said.

A Letter from the President Dear Sketch Club members,

J am finishing this letter at Hillsborough Wine1y as

many of our members are enjoying the workshop by

Lorrie Herman on photographing your artwork. 1 love

the practical workshops this winter - photographing

critiquing writing artist statements (March) and choosing

appropriate painting supplies and materials (April). If you have any suggestions for

future workshops please send them to the winter workshop committee. Our member

Laura Hopkins has a ked for a work hop on drawing structures - excellent idea for next

year!

The outdoor committee has outdone itself in planning your pie in air adventures

this year. "Vineyards and Villages" promises to be fun and inspiring. I personally cannot

vi it a winery without whipping out my camera to capture the beauty of the vine-covered

vistas. We will kick off the 2018 outdoor sessions at Hillsborough Winery on May 1

- and as an added bonus, we will have our Spring meeting at the winery that day

during lunch. The notice and details are in this newsletter - please join us - if not to

paint, then to share lunch, companionship and the business of the club.

You will also find in this newsletter a column with opportunities to support our

club with your volunteer efforts. We will elect new officers this year and enhance our

committee structure. We need potential officers a general publicity coordinator and a

new shows steering committee. I will be hosting a meeting later this month with those

interested in participating in the show committee. I envision this committee a a steering

committee for all the shows with other volunteers coming in to help with specific venues.

There are many activities and task associated with planning an art show that have to

happen no matter where and when the show takes place. A general timeline and publicity

timeline will take the guess work - and intimidation - out of running any show. That is

my goal for the shows steering committee. Please send your interest in any of the club's

volunteer oppo1tunities to me at [email protected]. I look forward to assisting in

any way I can a I pass the presidency on to the next great leader of our club.

Finally I end on a poignant note. The Loudoun Now new paper gave us

permission to reprint the beautiful tribute Margaret Morton wrote about our extraordinary

Gale Waldron. The entire a1ts community is grief stricken that she is no longer with us.

On a personal note I cannot look at the art anywhere in my home without thinking of her

support of artists and the arts. She showed me the way toward my patronage of the arts

and my desire to work on your behalf. We shared laughter and tears and our love of

""'

travel. .. our trip to Italy together in 2010

remains one of the most memorable adventures

of my life. A photo of Gale in Venice on that

trip is on the left. We will have a memory book

at the Spring meeting for you to share memories

and send condolences to her family.

Have a good Spring eve1yone.

See you May I st!

Cindy

"I've never known anyone with so much drive,

persistence and determination to promote the arts,

especially visual arts in Loudoun and beyond,"

Thompson said, calling Waldron her mentor,

inspiration and friend.

Potter Richard Busch called Waldron 'the

happiest person I've ever known." His wife Olwen

Woodier noted Waldron's "fighting spirit to the

end." Even when gravely ill in recent months she

was always upbeat. She was thinking of planting a

flower garden. wo days later, they helped lay out

black plastic in preparation for next season

erecting a 'Gale's Garden sign that she could see

from the house.

Friends brought her wildflower seeds, and she

was excited that composted manure from neighbors

would be used to enrich the soil.

Waldron volunteered with the annual Four

Seasons of Oatlands Art Show and Sale

Leesburg s Fall into the Arts Festival, and the

Loudoun Chamber of Commerce on Horsing

Around Event. She also served on the Western

Studio Artists Tour and the Loudoun County Ali

Advisory Board.

She is survived by her hu band Gerry Waldron,

her daughter Sarah Waldron of Belfast ME and

her sister Jean Hendrickson of Chapel Hill, C. An

Trillium Walk by Cynthia

Years ago, I was an active Master aturalist and attended a native plant

class through Audubon ANS. We went to this magical place to hike and

identify native plants. The mountainside was sprinkled with millions of

Trillium. There are also native orchids green violets and other native

plants in secret places. This happens the first week in May. If a group of

artists would like to venture out , I would be happy to lead the walk.
