September, 2013 VOLUME 8:9 FROM DAVID'S PEN . . . September 2013 Dear Friends – How many of us remember the days when we gathered on Wednesday evenings to participate in what we called then “Wednesday Night Academy?” I remember those days well when I served this congregation as its first Associate Pastor. My duties then were to work with the children and youth of our church in the basement while Bob Sharman taught the adults in the Rodger’s Center. Those days bring back fond memories of good food, fine fellowship, and faith-filled study! In conjunction with the Christian Education Committee, I am proud to announce that we will be bringing back “Wednesday Night Academy” to our church beginning September 11 th ! We’ll kick-off each Wednesday with a meal served at 5:30 p.m. and study following at 6:15 p.m. The youth and children will be gathering at this time as well, and we’ll conclude by 7:00 p.m. so our choir members can make it to practice on time. There will be a little something for everyone at Academy starting on September 11 th , so be making plans to attend. Meals will cost around $3.00 for adults and $1.50 for children. Where else could you find a better meal-deal than that! I am indeed excited about bringing back our “Wednesday Night Academy” programming to First Presbyterian Church and I pray that you will join me in this excitement as we will soon be meeting weekly for food, fellowship, and study! TENNESSEE VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CURSILLO Maranatha Camp & Conference Center, Scottsboro, Alabama

Presbyterian Cursillo (cur-se-yo) is a 3-day retreat to renew and refresh our faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. It is a time of fun, fellowship, music, learning, and worship in a casual and relaxed setting. Any adult member (18+) of the PC(USA) is eligible to attend. The weekend begins at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and concludes by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is $150.00 per person. Scholarships are available.

People who attend Cursillo are just like you. They are Christians practicing their faith. The word Cursillo means “a short course” and a Cursillo weekend is a short course on Christian living. The lay-led retreat is an opportunity to grow in the faith and in a closer relationship with Christ. A PC(USA) clergy staff is on hand for counseling, prayer, and administering the sacraments. Every activity is founded in Reformed Theology and follows the Book of Order.

The next weekend is TVPC # 20 on October 10-13, 2013. For an application or general information about Cursillo, please visit our website: http://tvpcursillo.com/ or contact our Registrar, Mary Snyder, at: [email protected].

Leave the busy-ness of the world behind and treat yourself to a time of experiencing and reflecting on God’s love for you!

“Stuff the Bus” 2013 is the United Way of Athens’ effort to encourage our local community to reach out to all the children of our county by donating new and gently used books. By providing school aged children (Pre-K through 12th) with additional books, we are helping them be more successful in their school careers and ultimately we are helping our community to be more successful. Fact: Children need to read so that they may be able to understand the world around them, to succeed in school, to succeed in the workforce and to be effective citizens. Fact: Children are learning to read in the early elementary years: by 4

th grade they are

reading to learn. We are asking First Presbyterian Church for your help and cooperation in being a site where individuals could drop off books for this initiative. United Way will provide receptacles for the books as well as pick up services for all donated books during this six week initiative. We will list your site on all of our promotion and information items. “Stuff the Bus” will begin on August 1, 2013 and will culminate at the Day of Caring celebration on Thursday, September 12th at First Baptist Church, Athens with a luncheon at Noon. We would like to have anyone who has participated with this effort as our guest. Sincerely, Kaye Young McFarlen Executive Director United Way of Athens – Limestone County

“Stuff the Bus” “Stuff the Bus” “Stuff the Bus” “Stuff the Bus” Reading List and Suggested Titles

For ages 4 - 12+

First Presbyterian family members who would like to donate books can see a copy of the “Reading List and Suggested Titles” which will be posted on the wall near the church office. If you would like a printed copy of the list, copies will be available in the church office and on the counter in the Rodgers Center.

We want everyone to bring new or gently used books for grades K-12. United Way is having a “Stuff the Bus” book drive to put books in the hands of kids in Limestone County. Bring your book donations to the Sunday School assembly, worship, or to the church office. Yes, you can clean out the books your kids no longer use. Yes, you can go book shopping and get one that has never been opened before. There is a reading list posted just outside the office door, but the book drive is not limited to these books.
