Prior to the planned tree planting, Nicholas gave a mostinteresting account of his family’s long connection with this historichouse and garden. The 3,000 acre estate which is divided into grass,arable and forestry was acquired by his forebears in 1913. A formalgarden was designed in the 17th century and commands spect acularviews over a deer park and the rolling Cotswold Hills. Some of thetopiary was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. Herbaceous Borderswithin the walled Garden are said to be some of the longest in privateownership. us to a carefully chosen area of the gardenwhich was the ideal location for our Master,John Warner, ably assisted by our hosts, toplant the Medlar Tree.

With the exhausting work completed,(even Major Tom’s Labrador who hadentered into the spirit of the occasionappeared a little weary), and before sittingdown for lunch there was time to relax in

what has been quoted as being one of theten most romantic gardens in the world –and participate in some light sustenance!!

During the tasty lunch which followed,Past Master David Hohnen thankedNicholas and Major Tom Wills for the warmwelcome which they had extended to theFruiterers Company.

The visit concluded with a walk throughthe garden led by Major Wills who explainedhow the garden had evolved.

There is always an air of relaxationoverlaying the traditional formality at

the Master and Wardens’ Dinner. Per haps,it is because it is the Master’s last comp -any dinner in the year – his final swansongbeing the St Paul’s Day lunch, or, perhaps,it is because we hold this dinner in theBarber-Surgeons Hall, which has becomea sort of home for us. This year was noexception and the Master had enhancedthe occasion by inviting as his guests agood number of Masters of other LiveryCompanies. There was some debateabout what is the correct collective nounfor a group of Masters. Some rather likedthe term a Mystery of Masters, as all weancient companies were called Mysteriesin the thirteenth century. Thinking thatthere was very little mysterious about thecheerful Masters at the dinner, the pref -erence was for a Pride of Masters, proudas they are of their own companies. The

Pride that evening con sist ed of the Mastersof the Wax Chandlers, the Cooks, theGold and Silver Wire Drawers, the En vir -on mental Cleaners, the Immediate PastMaster of the Carmen and, of course, ourown Master. We were honoured to havewith us as guests of the company theCom missioner of the City of London Police,Ian Dyson QPM, and the two recentlyretired Sheriffs, Alderman Timothy Hailesand Neil Redcliffe JP. It is a tradition thatwe invite to this dinner each year, theSheriffs whose year of office has finishedin September. And so it was a greatpleasure that both were able to join us.

It was a joy to welcome at the dinnertwo newly clothed Liverymen, JamesSimpson and Anthony Upward, and fournew Freeman, Stuart Ross, by redempt -ion, and Anthony Clark, Adrian Olins andBenjamin Olins by servitude – havingcompleted their apprenticeships. It wasalso very good to see the Honorary FruitPorter, Jim Huddart. Jim recently offic -iated at the Presentation of Fruit to theLord Mayor. He puts all the Past Mastersto shame as it is he, and he alone, whoknows his lines by heart!

James Smith, a fruit grower from Kent,spoke about his experiences as one of ourNuffield scholars. His dissertation on‘Realis ing the potential of English Applesand Pears’ should be required reading forall our fruit industry Liverymen. The Masterspoke, eloquently as always, about thecompany and to introduce our guests,followed by our principal speaker, IanDyson. ‘Seventy percent of crime is cybercrime’. These were the salutary words withwhich he started his speech. It was themost thought provoking speech given tothe Fruiterers in many years. The CityPolice have a unique importance in thedefence against cyber crime: they are thenational centre of reporting and intelli -gence for all the police forces of theCountry. The other statistics given in theCommissioner’s speech were equallysobering: there were 5.8 million reported

cyber offences in 2017 and sixty percentof businesses that suffer a cyber crime areattacked again the following year. As theuse of cards and internet transactionsgrows, so does the potential for increasesin attacks. These crimes are not muchcommitted by an anti-social nerd with aPC in his bedroom, as is the popularimage; they are largely committed byhighly technical and sophisticated ‘cyberfraud factories’, often situated abroad.Unfortunately, many individuals andorganis ations are very slack about basicIT protection. Fortunately, the image of‘PC Plod’ (the Commissioner’s own words)lagging be hind the crim inals is incorrect.The Police have sophisticated technologyand technicians and are making succ -essful convictions. Ian Dyson is only thefifteenth Commiss ioner, since the CityPolice were founded in 1839. What achange in the nature of crime, the Cityhas seen in the 180 years since then.

Refresh ment was needed after thismost interesting speech, so we were allmost grateful that theMaster invited us totake a stirrup cup.

Honorary Archivist

Past Master Cuthbert Grasemann MA,was for many years the public relations

and advertising officer of the old SouthernRailway and subsequently of the SouthernRegion of the Railway Executive of BritishRailways.

Educated at Rugby and Trinity College,Cambridge, Grasemann entered the serviceof the Railway in 1912, succeeding JohnElliot (later Sir John Elliot) as P.R.O. in 1930.Bringing to his work a lively imagination anda tireless energy “C. G.” as he was univer -sally known, quickly made the P.R.O. againa necessary and acceptable part of theorganisation. He also had a wide knowledgeand appreciation of art and was one of thepioneers of having high standard pictures,painted by first class artists, made intoposters, at the same time encouraging newand unknown artists in this field.

Outside railways his great interest was inthe sea and little boats. He was one of theoldest members of the Royal Cruising Cluband for many years honorary steward of theclub. He was an indefatigable member ofthe general purposes committee of the RoyalYachting Association; was commodore of

the Cambridge University Cruising Club andat one time rear commodore of the RoyalMotor Yacht Club; and he was chosen as theBritish delegate to the Union of InternationalMotor Boating. Honorary secretary of the“International off Shore Power Boat Racing”,being remembered by the “Cuthbert Grase -mann” Memorial trophy. He was also trusteeof the Harmsworth Trophy

In the City of London where he workedfor the greater part of his active life he tookdeep interest in its social fabric. He was aliveryman of the Fruiterers’ Company andserved as Master in 1942. His work however,brought him into close contact with FleetStreet and newspaper men where he tookan active part in the newly founded Comp -any of Newspaper Makers. On the fusion ofthat guild with the ancient Company ofStationers, he took up with the livery ofStationers and Newspaper Makers where in1956 he was elected Master for the ensuingyear.

At the time of his death in 1961 he waschairman of the Stationers’ CompanySchool and was one of the governors of theTwickenham Technical College.

Our picture records the Master CuthbertGrasemann handing a cheque for charitablecauses to the Lord Mayor during the annualceremony of Presentation of Fruit to theLord Mayor in 1942.

Cuthbert Grasemann was related to theEiloart family, four members of whom werePast Masters of the Worshipful Company ofFruiterers with Ferdinand Eiloart serving asMaster on two occasions. Most interestingly,a distant cousin Liveryman Ian Eiloartremains a member of the company to thisday.

Fruiterers led by our Master were at CommonHall, Guildhall, on Oct 1 with other

Liverymen to vote Alderman Peter Kenneth Estlin,International Banker, as the next Lord Mayor Electof the City of London. Two other AldermanicCandidates stood in the election. Lunch was takenafter in the Stationers Hall. The Lord Mayor Elect, Alderman Peter Estlin

Peter Estlin was paraded as the 691st Lord Mayor ofthe City of London on Saturday 10th November in

a pageant that has its roots extending back 800 years.In 2018 the Procession, commonly entitled ‘The LordMayor’s Show’ was over three miles in length, involvedover 140 floats, 7,000 people and 200 horses. Theweather was perfect; sunshine, a touch crisp but blueskies prevailed. Always popular with families, spectatorswere treated to some wonderful displays of militaryprecision, innovative displays, delightful music all lacedwith a great sense of fun.

In the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, all the stops had tobe pulled out to prevent the world economy slumping even

further than it did. However, this did not prevent the 2009 globalrecession but there has been a steady recovery since.

The UK’s economic recovery has been lengthy, but weak, withlow wages, productivity and investment, even prior to the 2016Referendum. On the positive side, there has been record levels ofemployment but only recently has wage growth started to pick-up.In the US, too, the recovery has been lengthy and recently has beenstrong, helped by President Trump’s tax cuts. Meanwhile in the euroarea, recovery has been disappointing and after hitting a recessionin 2012-13 there has been a slow pick-up, with Germany andNorthern Europe in far better shape than the rest. But this year,euro growth has been disappointing.

In looking ahead it is vital to appreciate how important monetarypolicy – the setting of interest rates and the printing of money bycentral banks like the Bank of England – has been in what hashappened over the last decade.

Huge amounts of tax payers’ money were used to bail out thebanks following the 2008 crisis. Sorting out the financial sectorthen became one of the central planks of global policy. The US wasahead of the game in cleaning up bank balance sheets and theEuropeans some way behind. Indeed their financial system still hasa fragile feel to it. In the UK, meanwhile, solid advances have beenmade. The banks here appear in far better shape.

One way to picture this is a pendulum, where before the globalcrisis, it was at one extreme – regulation was too light – but it hasnow swung to the other extreme, too heavy. Pendulums, naturally,have to settle in the middle. Current regulation has made the bankssafer in the sense of having more capital and liquidity and thusbeing better positioned to withstand another crisis. Regular stresstests suggest that will be the case.

But the worry is that regulations have incentivised banks to buygovernment debt and to lend to the property sector but have notencouraged them to lend to small and medium sized firms acrossthe economy. This may have been a factor constraining the paceof recovery.

In turn, we have seen different schemes to boost UK lending,such as Funding for Lending and Term Lending Schemes. Troubleis, over the last year these schemes have ended as monetary policyhas been tightened. There has also been a small increase in ratesto 0.75% and a tightening in bank capital requirements, potentiallyconstraining their ability to lend.

In addition to sorting out the banks, it was the pumping ofmoney into the system over the last decade that did the trick,

helping recovery. Monetarypolicy became the shockabsorber, both in the UK andglobally: interest rates werecut to rock bottom levels; andthere was “quantitative easing”.

This largely involved the central bank printing money bypumping huge amounts into the economy and financial markets.The Bank of England, for instance, bought government andcorporate bonds. Currently its asset purchases via quantitativeeasing stand at a massive £485 billion of government bonds and£10 billion of corporate bonds.

One of the big challenges is that if easy monetary policy was soinstrumental in turning the UK and global economy around, whathappens when it returns to normal? Central banks need to bemindful of the impact their policies will have on financial marketsand the economy as they withdraw their stimulus.

Policy normalisation has been ongoing for four years in the US.While this has involved higher rates, this tightening has beengradual and predictable. But as we have seen in recent months, itis now taking its toll on financial markets. The US stock market hasfallen sharply and government borrowing rates risen.

Here in the UK, meanwhile, policy tightening has beenprogressing for about a year. While interest rates have only risenmarginally, there has been additional tightening through the endingof lending schemes and also through a further tightening of bankcapital requirements. The net effect is that rates have not risenenough for savers to notice but the combination of policies maybe enough to account for the recent slowing in the UK economy.

In the third quarter (July to September) the UK grew stronglybut it slowed during the quarter. Early data from the fourth quartershows sluggish retail sales and weak monetary growth.

As we look to 2019 there will be many different factorsimpacting the economic outlook. Current inflation of 2.4% shoulddecelerate to its 2% target. The recent Budget provided a stimulus.Solid jobs growth and rising wages may boost consumer spendingwhile the competitive pound may help export growth. Greatercertainty about what lies ahead after Brexit may also provide abounce in investment plans. But above all, it is important not tooverlook the vital role monetary policy has played in recovery andthus its importance in shaping the pace of growth ahead. The Bankof England needs to tread carefully, both in raising interest ratesand in tightening other areas of policy. Gradualism is key.

View from Overseas

There is a lot of talk about the excitingopportunities for British products and

services in a post-Brexit world, outside of theEU and often in Asia. This applies, not least,to the agricultural and horticultural sectors,as we look to embrace life after the CommonAgricultural Policy and develop our own UKspecific way of managing the agri-food sector.

Most people now know the number ofAsian consumers is set to grow by around1.5 billion over the next generation, andeconomic growth is also set to be strong.

The key driver of this is a combination ofstrong demographics, robust macro funda -mentals and greater trade integration withthe rest of the world. Government policiesacross the region are often aimed at reformin the key areas of economic and tradepolicy.

Right place, right timeWhile the opportunity in Asia is clear, pickingthe right market, at the right time, acrosssuch a diverse region is still a majorchallenge. The following pointers providesome guidance;l Is there a large, growing population that

is increasingly wealthy?l Is the economy strong per se?l Is there a history of needing (or wanting)

to import? Not just in horticulture, butacross the agri-food sector per se

l How strong (or not) are the tariff and nontariff barriers to entry?

l Is there a rapidly developing retail andfoodservice market?

All of the above factors are typical ofIndonesia.

What do we know about Indonesia?With a population of over 260 million, ofwhich 50% is aged between 5-34, a fast-growing middle class estimated to be in theregion of 40 million already, per capitaincome of over US$11,000 (when ad justedby purch as ing power parity), robusteconomic growth of some 5% per annum,the attraction of Indonesia starts to becomeclear.

The retail structure is still dominated bytraditional outlets, but modern super marketsare becoming more influential with the likeof Carrefour, Giant, Lotte Mart, Spar, Aeon,Circle K, Lawsons, Family Mart and GS

Supermarket (a Korean chain) all present. Hypermarkets, supermarkets, con veni -

ence shops and minimarkets are all presentespecially in the Indonesian capital, Jakartaand other major urban centres.

Production, imports and the role ofgovernmentLocal horticultural production is in the

region of 18 million tonnes per annum. This production is dominated by crops

such as bananas (almost 50% of the total),as well as other products, such as mango,papaya, citrus and then more local items,such as dragon fruit, rambutan and durian.

“However, based on our knowledge, theoverall small scale structure of Indonesianproduction struggles to compete withimported fruit, on both price and quality.This is linked to the often poorly developedphysical infrastructure in terms of coolstores, handling/packaging and distribution.

Distribution in particular is a majorchallenge, because Indonesia is made up ofthousands of islands, although 60% of thepopulation live on Java alone.

This sees the import market well suppliedby the likes of the US, Australia, SouthAfrica, Argentina, China and Thailand.

China and Thailand obviously enjoy adegree of geographic proximity and the USand southern hemisphere suppliers havebeen quick to spot the opportunity anddevelop commercial links in to the Indon -esian market. And, of course, they delivergood quality products.

Around 150,000 tonnes of apples areimported per annum, and another 120,000tonnes of pears, along with other prod uctssuch as citrus and grapes. This is despitethe Indonesian govern ment’s support andincentives for horticultural producers, and attimes, open mani pu lation of non-tariffbarriers which can restrict imports at certaintimes of the year.

Produce or agri-tech?Based on market experience, it seemsunlikely that the UK will be exporting hugevolumes of produce to Indonesia, but someniche market opportunities will clearly exist.Where, however, the UK might be able tosee more success is in the provision oftechnical skills and educational training

services, an area in which we are inherentlystrong.

This is all part of an estimated US$ 400billion global ‘agri-tech’ market covering theneed to find solutions to complex chall -enges surrounding the need for more‘resilience’ in the supply chain, use of water,climate change, the environment, labourand the opportunities brought about by the

move towards a digital economy. Thesesorts of issues are all beginning to impacton Indonesia.

This is a strength for the UK, as not leastour supermarkets have demanded thatprod uce companies are well resourced inthese areas in the drive to develop highlyefficient supply chains. And this is wherecountries such as Indonesia are eventuallyheading.

In the global top five?Indonesia has seen an economic growthrate over the last 10 years only trailingbehind Turkey, India and China in the G20’smajor economies.

It’s already the fourth largest economy inAsia, behind China, Japan and South Korea.And by 2050, it’s predicted that it will be thefourth largest in the world. A tremendousopportunity exists.

The English apple crop is far larger thanwas forecast at the outset of August.

But cooler weather and rain provided idealconditions for good growth in Septemberwhich has resulted in the dessert cropshowing an increase of 27% over 2017.Braeburn has been the variety benefittingmost where the current tally is over 26,000tonnes up from 11,500 tonnes last year.Gala stands at 71,000, an increase of 20%.Encouragingly Bramley has had a goodyear notching up a 28% rise in tonnageterms. After a disappointing 2017 the newvarieties have also registered a 10% recov -ery but this is mainly on the back of newplantings and last year’s low crop.

Most individuals in the top fruit businessare surprised by the figures particularly afterthe cool, damp spring and exceptionally hotsummer. A similar situation prevails inEurope where at 12.3m tonnes the crophas been described as “large”. There issome consternation in Poland where thegovernment has felt it necessary to introd -uce measures to remove 11% of the cropfor processing from the market place. In effect, this has been described as anintervention scheme. The aim is to give thePolish apple growers an income.

Back on home territory, this year’s UKapple quality has been described with theuse of superlatives. According to those closeto the action sugars, texture, colour, tasteand skin finish are exemplary. One burningquestion remains, how will the fruit standup in cold storage? Well is the answer, if the

available analysis of the flesh proves accurate.Despite the glowing prospects several

negative factors have emerged. It startedwith a substantial hangover of southernhemisphere apples at the commencementof the European season. Many of thesewere of indifferent quality and small in size,finding their way to the UK market. Theyacted as a depressant on the price structurewhich has resulted in values for freshdomestic English apples being down by aminimum of 5%. Even more threatening isthe price of apple juice which has declinedby a staggering 60% since last autumn.Apple juice stocks for cider are very highand there is virtually no market for pearjuice. With an inadequacy of bins andretention capacity in certain areas of thecountry, some growers have been forcedinto selling apples which have becomemature, at low prices. Cox which used to bethe jewel in the crown of the English applecrop is losing favour amongst consumers.The variety’s problems has been exacer -bated this season with no promotions beingmounted. intelligent robotics will beintroduced for harvest -ing apples in the future,

such machinery will beexpensive and requires

trees that are grown on suit -able root stocks and formats.

In early October the UK’s largest grocer,Tesco, announced that it was intending to

remove ‘best by’ labels from even more of itsfresh fruit and vegetable lines. Consumerresearch has found this information confusingand can potentially lead to perfectly safe andedible food being dumped unnecessarily. Thelatest move saw labels removed from ownbrand apples, oranges, cabbages andasparagus. Compulsory “use by” labels haveto be put on foods such as meat, fish, eggs

and dairy products that carry a safety risk ifeaten after that date. But the best before datesput on fruit and vegetables are largely a qualityindication to show that although they may nolonger be at their best, they are still safe toconsume. WRAP, the government’s wasteadvisory service estimates that £13bn of ediblefood is binned from domestic circumstanceson an annual basis while another £3bn isdumped from the hospitality and food servicesector. In September Tesco was among majorsupermarkets and manufacturers signing upto efforts to drive down the food wastemountain by committing to halving wastefrom “farm to fork” by 2030. All very laudableaspirations particularly when linked to thedetermination to reduce plastic at retail level.

Chatting to our independent retail green -grocer, who incidentally has very few problemswith wastage, (virtually zero), he reported ageneral upsurge in interest and opinionamongst his customers on the subject ofplastic materials. As a conse quence, wheremost of his produce is free flow and brownbags have always been readily available, thatis being under scored by the introduction ofpaper carry bags. “We still maintaina stock of plastic carry bagsfor any customer

requiring one but we charge and the utilisationhas shrunk dramatically”, he asserts. On theUK’s exit from the EU he foresees littleinterruption to supplies of top quality producefrom Europe or oversees. When asked whichexport nation of fresh fruit and vegetables isgoing to ignore a market of 65 million plus,relatively affluent consumers, or indeed canafford to, his resp onse was “none”. The freshproduce industry has always found mech -anisms for circum navigating bureaucracywithout break ing the law and will continue todo so. “People need to eat and demandchoice and will ensure that it is maintained”.His biggest concern currently was the sluggishmarket and oversupply on certain lines whichwas making the trade more difficult. Heconfirmed that the hangover of southernhemisphere apple supplies into the Europeanseason had had serious conse quences forEnglish producers and the reputation oftrademark varieties such as Pink Lady andJazz. Quality of English fruit was good butprices were low. The only beacon in his viewat the time of the interview was EgremontRusset, which was maintaining its value. Thegeneral opinion of most traders has been thatthe Spanish commenced their citrus camp -aign too early and the quality, certainly of softcitrus, left much to be desired. It had been adifficult northern hemisphere grape seasonand early shipments from south of theEquator were mixed.

Meanwhile still on the plastic front ALDIannounced that it was introducing clear, re -cyclable packaging for selected fresh producelines in a move that will save an estimated 265tonnes of plastic per year.

Figures released by Kantar Worldwide forthe British Supermarket sector’s sales andgrowth for the 12 weeks to the 4 Novembermake interesting reading. The discounters,principally Aldi and Lidl, continue to makeground. Between them they attracted anadditional 14 million shoppers both makingimpressive gains in turnover and marketshare. Of the ‘Big Four’ Asda returned themost impressive figures.

Being Fruiterers, we shouldn’t forget thehumble Pumpkin. A dry, hot summer resulted

in a crop of smaller sized fruit butconsumers spent 24% more on this

Halloween favourite than last year;the supermarket till receipts record -ing £7m at retail. How much was

wasted and how much was subsequently con -verted to soup or pies? Now there’s a thought.

This will be my last “Reflections” so I hopeyou will allow me to indulge in a little

nostalgia!As Master it is especially pleasing to award

Student Prizes and, at the Fruit Focus Ipresented such a prize, sponsored by BerryGardens. The worthy recipient was JedKnaggs who gained his award for his disser -tation examining the effect of temperatureand photoperiod on the yield of June-bearingstrawberries under LED lighting for out-of-season production. We all believe that Jed,has a great future in the Industry.

Apart from presenting awards, of whichmore later, my time has been more than filledby what I call an Ambassadorial Role.Together with the Masters of other LiveryCompanies. I have been invited to manydiverse events. One such was to listen to theBand of the London Scottish Regiment intheir Drill Hall and the Band of the RoyalYeomanry in Guildhall Yard.

Then it was my turn to receive rather thangive! At a Dinner hosted by the WorshipfulCompany of Basketmakers I was presentedwith an Apple Cobb – a traditional applegathering basket – which now sits proudly inour Parlour.

This was to signal the start of a move fromceremonial events back to more fruit orient -ated occasions.

As many of you know, one of our mostpopular fellowship events is the “Master’sWeekend” held in a location special to him orher.

This year I chose Oxford and the Chilterns.We started out having lunch in ‘Cell Five’ ofwhat used to be Oxford Prison, which nowhouses a Malmaison Hotel. Some of you may

recall that when I was working I was involvedin the transformation from the very grim HighSecurity Prison (featured in many TV and filmshows including Porridge) to a mostwelcoming hotel.

We were, I am relieved to say, all “releasedfrom the prison” and the next day we startedwith a visit to a local vineyard, Daws Hill.Here we were given a very extensive tour anda tasting of their various vintages and typesof wine, all sparkling. I had visited this vine -yard before and sampled their wines over the

years and can vouch for the rapidimprovement they have made in their quality.A part of the wider fruit industry that isexpanding throughout the land!

Then on to the tree planting! My choice ofvenue this year was The Sir Charles Napier.PM Sibley, as always, sel ected a variety thathad a connection to the venue,and, because we were in Oxford -shire, a Blenheim Orange applevariety was chosen.

With a huge sigh of relief,we, in common with the CityLivery Comp anies paus edfor breath in August.However, we decided totake a break in Guernsey,where I was delight ed to meetPast Master Mike Tanguy andhis charming wife Elizabeth.

Mavis and I returned fromGuernsey ready to resumeour duties and were immedi -ately “on parade” with a visit to

the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. On 1stSeptember we attended a Drum HeadService to commemorate the start of the“Last 100 Days Campaign” which, in turn ledto the conclusion of the First World War.

Then to Miserden for the tree planting atthe Historic Houses/Christies Garden of theYear. We were welcomed by Nicholas Willsand his father Major Tom Wills. They hadchosen a Medlar tree, again supplied by PastMaster Will Sibley, and this was planted withdue ceremony accompanied by Major Tom’srecently acquired Labrador. (Page 1)

I was then privileged to attend the All-PartyCider Group meeting on the terrace of theHouse of Commons. It struck me as odd thatat the meeting in one breath cider producerswere being castigated for not using homegrown cider apples and in the next there waspromotion of various flavoured fruit “ciders”.Obviously, I, as an Engineer, do not under -stand anything!

I then went to Antwerp with my wife’sCompany, the Worshipful Company

of Makers of Playing Cards, tovisit the largest manufacturer of

playing cards in the world –only mentioned here asthey have a special rangeof cards for magicianssuch as our very own Clerk!

Then to the MalvernAut umn Show whereLiveryman Graham Collier

had organised the Fruiterersin his normal efficient way toput on the Peoples’ ChoicePerry Competition, won this

to attend Common Hall at Guildhall to electthe new Lord Mayor. (Page 3). This is anancient ceremony that all Liverymen shouldattend and is, of course, followed by a lunch!

I firmly believe that we, as a Companyshould have our own Common Hall where theincoming Master can set out the programmefor the year together with reports from theChairmen of the various Committees andCouncil, Common Hall is, I believe, requiredby our Charter and is mentioned in the GreenBook as being held every year but I have beenoutvoted on this but if you agree with meplease let the Court know. It could easily beaccommodated in St Paul’s Day if enough ofyou demand it!

Perhaps one of the most important eventswe have attended was the opening by HelenWhately M.P. of the ground-breaking long-term research project, Apples in a WarmerWorld. This research is being undertaken byReading University at the National FruitCollection, Brogdale. Begun three years ago,it is only now that the trees are deemed to bewell enough established for the project to beofficially opened. Despite this apparent delay,very valuable data has already been collected.

Other research we continue to support isby Dr Michelle Fountain at NIAB EMR. She isin the final year of her quest to seek parasit -oids of Drosophila susukii (SWD) as a meansof controlling this invasive and very damagingpest of fruit.

Your Awards Council has always beeneager to support young scientists and thisyear has been no exception. We have, there -fore, awarded two travel bursaries to NIABEMR students. One to Flora O’Brien to enableher to present a poster on apple re-plantdisease at a conference in Israel and the other

to Franesco Rogai for him toundertake a two-day study visit tothe laboratories of an Italianresearch institute, The Edmund Mach Found -ation, to exchange expertise on the control ofSWD by parasitoids as mentioned above.

The Company is also a great supporter ofthe Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust. Inthis current year we are sharing the spon sor -ship of Richard Harrison with the WorshipfulCompany of Gardeners. His subject will be“Where next for soft fruit in the UK?Addressing the yield gap and providing a pathto 500 t/ha”.

Those of you who came to the Master &Wardens’ Dinner, (Page 2), will have heard thebrilliant presentation made, without notes, byJames Smith. He demonstrated how wellspent our money is when we direct itaccurately. Our thanks are due to the AwardsCouncil who ensure that not a single penny iswasted. To this end it is important torecognise that we will NOT be awarding aNuffield Scholarship this year as no suitablecandidate has been put forward.

Another apple related event that I attendedwas the 25th Bramley Apple Festival held inSouthwell Minster and other locations in thetown. I was honoured to be asked to open thisFestival by one of our own Liverymen RogerMerryweather, great-great-grandson of HenryMerryweather. Henry was the nurseryman whopropagated the original sapling. Much like theWorld Marmalade Festival in Penrith, thewhole town has taken this Festival to heartwith brilliantly conceived window displays.

Next in the diary was the National FruitShow held at the Kent County Show Ground,Detling where I had the privilege of makingseveral awards. (Page 11).

Following on from the National Fruit Showwe went to Mansion House where I presentedto the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress ourancient dues in the form of “no more thanbushels twelve” of fruit, (Page 12). At thatsame ceremony the Company donatedcheques to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and tothe Mansion House Scholarship Scheme.One of our stated objectives is to support theLord Mayor and the City.

Then came what has been, perhaps, themost important contribution that I, or,perhaps, any other Master of our Company,

could have made to raising the profile of theCompany within the City. In February 2017 Ifirst floated the idea that Livery Companiesshould be represented at the Centenary of theArmistice that marked the end of World WarOne. I could not believe that never before hadthe Livery Companies been represented at thelaying of the wreath by our Lord Mayor at theCity War Memorial outside the RoyalExchange. To this end, and with much “huffingand puffing”, I obtained the permission andsupport of the City for some 100 gownedrepresentatives of over 50 Livery Companiesto attend both the Service of Remembranceat St Paul’s, the laying of a wreath by me onbehalf of the Livery Companies and theapplauding of the Old Comrades as theymarched past Mansion House at the end ofthe ceremony. It appears that this will becomean annual event in the Livery Companies’diaries from now on.

I am immensely proud that we, theFruiterers, are in the forefront of events suchas these within the City, we have always“punched above our weight” in everythingwithin the City and long may we do so.Thanks to every one of you who hassupported Mavis and me in the year gone by– so fast that we have hardly drawn breath!

At the start of my year I said that my mottowould be “Fruit, Fellowship and Fun”.Hopefully I have gone someway to achievingthese aims.

The last four months have been describedas “challenging” by personnel closely and

intimately associated with the growing andmarketing of Strawberries. Britainexperienced the longest heat-wave for 40 years with recordtemperatures in many areas.This abnormal climaticsituation posed seriousquestions for growers andretailers alike. There weretrem endous peaks of fruit wellabove what the retail andwholesale market could sell and asa result the industry experi -enced consid erable wastage.On a positive note the retailerscame up with some innovative schemes tomanage the volumes and the new varietiesstood up well. At the conclusion of August allinvolved were fatigued, including the plants.During September supply shortened and withthe mild conditions prevailing in October theplants started to fruit again. The situation thenprogressed as is usual to glasshouse Dutchand by mid-November Egyptian and Jordan -ian supply. There has been a tremendousexpenditure of time and resource in recentyears on improving the genetics of strawberryplants, with those growers focussedon high quality replacing plantsannually There have beenissues with labour shortagesbut those growers with table top production anddesirable accommodationfor their seasonal pickersfared best. It is highly unlikelythat robotic or mech -anical picking aidswill be developed forstrawberries in theforeseeable future. Itwill remain a highlylabour intensive crop.

The seasonal results for Raspberries weremore encouraging. Apart from prod uctionbeing knocked back in the early stagesthrough cold weather, limited scorching andkeeping up with the heat during the mainseason, the entire crop was sold. There was alittle more peaking than would have beenregard ed as ideal but overall a satisfactoryseason was recorded. So called ‘top tier’varieties now account for around 15% of theproduction, driven by only one variety and

there are still a lot of customers who have yetto buy into the fruit.

Peaks of Blackberry production weremore compressed than text book and

there was nothing massivelyexciting about the top line

figures. Volume was staticyear-on-year but there is anopportunity to grow sales. Itrequires the general avail -ability of superior vari -

eties. Dark fruits aregenerally perceived

as healthy by thec o n s u m i n gpublic andblack berries

certainly fall into that category.UK Blue berry prod ucti on

during 2018 was influencednega tively by the heat and therewere a lot of marketing chall enges at theback end with berries of a small size. This wasdisapp ointing after a much larger early yield.Overall the crop size was satis factory andblueberry varieties are showing improve -ment. Additional plantings are beinginstalled but with the up-front capitalcosts and soil require ments, as well as

securing labour to harvest, it isunlikely that production

will increase dramatic -ally within these shores.Going forward it willbe about size andflavour.

Kiwi Berries showed a 64% increase inproduction, carving out their own little nichemarket.

The discounters fresh offer continues tomake an impact in the berry market andfurther growth will probably be aided by newstore openings. Although the traditionalmultiples are innovating and show that freshis still at the core of their business.

Soft and Stone FruitBERRIES and CURRANTS

Serves 8-10• 100g caster sugar• 3 tbsp blood orange marmalade• 200ml blood orange juice (from 3-4

fruit)• Juice of 2 lemons

Put the sugar in a pan with 600ml ofwater. Heat gently, stirring now andthen, until the sugar has dissolved,then leave to cool.

Chop the marmalade and mix it with

the blood orange juice, lemon juice andcooled syrup.

Pour the liquid into a shallow plasticcontainer and freeze for 4-5 hours, untilthe edges are beginning to crystallise.Fork the mix, freeze it for a further 4-5hours until it is soft-frozen, and thenfork it again so that the texture of theGranita is like slushy snow.

Return it to the freezer until youwant to serve it. Serve in small glasses.

The Fruiterers’ Management Award, whichis given annually to individuals who

demonstrate progressive and innovativemanagement skills working within the UKfruit industry, was presented by the Master to Richard Castle while at the National Fruit Show.

As the manager of Nichol Farm, at Teyn -am in Kent, Richard has worked closely withthe owner, Nick Moor, in transforming thefarm business and adopting novel and prog -ressive techniques, including twin stem treesgrown in fruit walls, multi-row sprayers,

driverless tractors and solar panels on thefruit store roofs. Nichol is an organic farm,recognised by one major customer, Waitrose,as top of its league in the UK. Indeed onecustomer complained that fruit from the unitwas “far too big and clean, and the colourtoo good for them to possibly be organic”.

John Warner concluded the presentationby saying “Richard, you have certainlydemon strated progressive and innovativemanage ment skills and are a worthyrecipient”. It gives me great pleasure topres ent you with the Worship ful Company

WCF Fruit Culture AwardThe Worshipful Company of Fruiterers’ Fruit

Culture Award is presented annually to anindividual who has made outstandingcontributions through communication andtechnology transfer. For 2018 the award was

presented to Robert Fovar -gue by the Master

Fruiterer, at Detling. Robert has spent time ona number of farms in the east and southeastof the country before managing RichardMerrick’s facility near Rye in East Sussex. Whenthat farm was sold Robert changed careersand transferred his knowledge, skills andenthusiasm to his new role as top fruit advisorfor the consultancy organisation ADAS.Although he had particular interests in harvest

management and cherry prod uct ion he wasalso a dab hand at pruning. This wasdemonstrated at one of the Gala Clubtrials run by Roger Worraker, where hewon a prize for ‘pruning and tree

manage ment’.Leaving ADAS he joined Pearce

Seeds, an independent agronomy and

agricultural services company based in theSouth West. Robert moved his family fromEast Sussex to Somerset, where in addition toadvising fruit and cider apple growers heestablished a cherry business on his own smallfarm. For a number of years he acted as anadvisor to the Fruiterers’ Awards Council butunfortunately had to step down for healthreasons.

Throughout his varied career Robert hassought out and developed new ideas passingthem on enthus iastically to others.

The Master, in presenting the award,expressed delight to see Robert “back on hisfeet” and personal pleasure that the FruitCulture Award was going to such a worthyrecipient.

National Fruit Show 2018This year was the 85th Anniversary of this

very important show which began in 1933as the Marden and District Commercial FruitShow, becoming the Marden Fruit ShowSociety in 1960 and then relaunched in 1999as the National Fruit Show.

Since 1992 the event has been held at theKent Showground, Detling where some of thefinest fruit produced in the UK is exhibited andwhere the Worshipful Company of Fruiterersannually awards medals. They are the result ofjudging in three classes; most meritoriousexhibit of Dessert Apples, Culinary Apples andPears

There is a strong spirit of competition andthe tender loving care which is required toproduce such a high standard of award-winning produce must not be under estimated.

For many years J A & N J Bardsley, RiverFarm, Staplehurst, Kent under the watchful eyeof Mrs Annette Bardsley have consistently

achieved success with their award-winningentries.

This year was no exception. The same teammust again be congratulated as this year’srecipients of the awards for the mostmeritorious exhibits of Culinary Apples andPears. The award for the ‘Most Meritoriousdisplay of Dessert Apple’ went to RD AppleGrowers. It should also be mentioned that BenBardsley won the ‘Toy Tractor Race’ at thedinner, the previous evening.

The fine weather over the two days of 24/25October encouraged a strong turn-out ofFruiterers with their families and guests.

Our Master and Renter Warden were inattendance with Past Masters, an HonoraryFreeman, Liverymen together with an Appren -tice and Journeyman. Our Company Standwas again placed in a prominent position andthe stewards received many visitors. As part ofhis duties our Master awarded our Fruit Culture

Trust medal to Richard Fovargue and ourManagement Award to Richard Castle.

Presentation of Fruit to the Lord Mayor An Ancient CustomThe annual ceremony undertaken by the

Fruiterers of ‘Presenting Fruit to the LordMayor’ is an ancient custom that continues tothis day, albeit in a somewhat reduced format.It is none the less important as it provides theFruiterers Company and the Lord Mayor withan opportunity to fulfil their commitments laidout in the historic charters. As most of youknow this ceremony dates back to, at least,the 15th century and is as a result of a bargainstruck between the Fruit -erers and the then LordMayor who kept demand -ing more and more taxeson the fruit being soldwithin the City. It all gottoo much so, after, weimagine, much “debate”,a limit on the amountthat could be demandedwas set. Nowadays, wepresent fruit, (much of it

award winning fruit from the National FruitShow), in a silver replica porter’s basket. Therest of our “dues” is, with the Lord Mayor’spermission, distributed throughout the year tohomeless shelters in and around the City.

At Mansion House 0n 31 October, theMaster John Warner took great pleasure inpresenting the Lord Mayor Charles Bowmanwith a magnificent selection of fruit. MavisWarner was also delighted to present the Lady

Mayoress, Samantha Bow -man, with a fruit basket,pictured left.

It should be noted thatthe display and the fruit

basket were created byLivery man Peter Thomas,who was ably assisted by theHonorary Fruit Porter JimmyHuddart. It was also Jimmy’sresponsibility to make thepresentation speech. This he

did in a word perfect fashion without referenceto a crib sheet.

Following the ceremony and prior todeparture, the Lord Mayor’s most generoushospitality was enjoyed and hugely apprec -iated by Past Masters, Liverymen, Officers ofthe Company together with their families andfriends.

Meet the Master Elect

Our Upper Warden and MasterElect is Cheryl Roux who was

born and educated in Zimbabwe andthen moved to South Africa in 1977,where she lived for 12 years. It washere that her business acumendeveloped, as she established adiversified hospitality company whichranged from fast food outlets, throughto coffee shops and restaurants tosilver service corporate dining.Catering for major sporting andentertain ment events were regularengage ments. In 1989 Cheryl stoppedin London for two weeks on her wayto Japan, loved the City and stayed.One day she might make it to Japan.

In London her catering interestsfurther developed, setting up adesigner chocolate company whichsupplied the niche market for licensedbranded chocolates. This then led toher becoming a consultant to the highprofile end of the hospitality industry.

She was introduced as a guest tothe Worshipful Company of Fruiterersby a close family friend, John Dunham.Readily identi fying with the charitableaspects having previously gained experiencein that field mentoring talented young artistsassisting them promote their skills in abusiness environment and currently actingas an Ambassador for RNIB and serving asa committee member for a number of othercharities. Cheryl became a member of theCompany in 2001. She has served on theMembership and Communication Comm -ittee before becoming an Honorary Assist -ant from 2008 to 2010. Adopted seven

years later as Renter Warden she is currentlyserving as Upper Warden and is due to beinstalled as Master at the St Paul’s Day

Service on 25 January, 2019. Her family life retains links with South

Africa where her mother still lives butshe greatly enjoys the company of hermarried daughter and two grand -children who live close by.

Cheryl enjoys opera, ballet, classicalmusic and the arts. Her sportingactivities include sailing (Yacht skipper),diving, skiing and adventurous travell -ing. A dog and horse lover, passionateabout food and wine, she is a memberof the Sloane Club, Soho House, 67Pall Mall and the International Wine andFood Society.

Her year will focus on the Company’sobjectives and the development of areasin the Fruiterers’ strategy which mayhave been overlooked in recent years.Encouraging liverymen to understandmore about our role and taking part inachieving our objectives will be a majorfeature. To this end, Cheryl commendsthe excellent new Company website,created almost entirely by Past MasterCooper, and which will be so helpful in

that process of understanding. Interestingvisits and events will, of course, also featurethroughout the year.

Under Forties Fruit Growers

The Worshipful Company of Fruiterers’ Awards Council has agreed to part sponsor‘2019 Under Forties Fruit Growers Conference’. This will be held in Chile between

10 – 18 February next year. Tom Christensen of Adrian Scripps, is co-ordinating thearrangements.

Four months had elapsed between theholding of the National Cherry and Soft Fruit

Show at Detling in July and the AwardPresentation Dinner at The Granville, Canterburyon Novem ber 13. This is an annual event, whereindividuals topping the class for which theyentered at the Show, are presented with theirprizes and awards. Obviously, there is always astrong grower contingent in the company andThe Master Fruiterer is invited to dispense thetrophies. Several Fruiterers were among therecipients.

On Thursday 11th October, LiverymanGerry Edwards was installed as Master of

the Guild of Mercers Scholars (GMS). GMS isa Guild of the Worshipful Company of Mercers.

That same evening, at the Apothecaries’Hall his Installation Dinner was held witharound 140 guests in attendance. ThePrincipal Guest was Lord Selborne and he wasaccompanied by the Chief Commoner, the

Chairman of the Mercers Company EducationCommittee, Fruiterers Past Master PeterCooper and a number of Mercers SchoolHeads. His charity for the year, which wasannounced at the Dinner, is THRIVE whoseaim is to enable positive changes in the livesof disabled and disadvantaged people throughthe use of gardening and horticulture.

Our Congratulations are extended to Gerry.

To those who have not worked in thefresh produce industry it is always a

wonderful experience to visit a wholesalemarket during trading hours. The displaysof pristine fresh fruit and veget ables,flowers and plants with the accompanyingkaleidoscope of colours and pervadingmyriad of scents that bombard the olfactorysenses, are wonders to be cherished. Forold hands there is always a magic ofarriving for work each day to witness thenewly arrived overnight deliveries that

need selling and distrib-uting while at theirpeak of condition. Each twenty-four hourcycle presents different challenges temp -ered by supply and demand and a virtualencyclopaedia of other factors. LiverymanPeter Thomas, who runs successfulbusinesses in New Spitalfields Market,recently played host to the Upper Wardenand a group of Honorary Assistants whocame to familiar ise and in certain casesre-energise their knowledge of whatactually occurs in this cauldron of trading.

Anthony Harris, who died on Saturday 8th September 2018,

had been a member of the WorshipfulCom pany of Fruiterers for over 40 years.Born in 1932, he was related to SirArthur (Bomber) Harris, a connectionof which he was very proud. Heattended Keble College, Oxford and ongraduation become a teacher. While atBec Grammar School, he taught DavidDavis, who later claimed that Anthonywas the most important influence in hisearly life. He finished his career as HeadMaster at one of the largest compre -hensive schools in Kent.

Anthony’s main int -er ests outside edu ca -tion were cricket and thelaw. He was a memberof the MCC and a greatsupp orter of SurreyCounty Cricket Club,having as a young manmanaged a schoolboy teamtouring Aust ralia. He became a Justiceof the Peace and sat as a magistrate inCentral London, often with his friend,Ni Okija III, King of (the Republic of)Ghana. Above the stairs of his house inKent, he hung a portrait of himself

dressed as JudgeJeffries. Anthony remained a

bachelor for his entirelife. Although his oftenrather abrupt manner

used to alienate some,he was an engaging andentertaining companion and

a loyal friend. He will be greatly missedby the relatively few who knew him well.

He was admitted to the Livery in 1977and served as an Honorary Assistant.

AService of Thanksgiving for the Life and Work of Sir Edward du

Cann was held on the 13th ofNovember in St Margaret’sChurch, Westminster Abbey.Known as Parlia ment’sChurch and tucked betweenWest minster Abbey andParliament Square, thisdelightful 12th centurychurch was the perfectplace for us to gather toremember Sir Edward, who,above all else, was a man ofparlia ment.

Fittingly, for such an eminent parlia - mentarian there were two orationsgiven by politician friends of Edward:Sir Graham Brady MP, chairman of theConservative Party 1922 Committee,and Daniel Hannan, MEP and journ -alist. They spoke movingly and withgreat affection of Edward’s life, career,his many achievements and his deter -min ation always to do what was right,even at personal cost to himself. His

jovial charm and easy relationshipswith every body shone throughout theirorations. He was a man of great loyaltyand his own words summed this up‘he who deserves loyalty the most, ishe who gives it to others’.

Lord Fowler, the Lord Speaker, ledthe readings and Edward’s son,James, and his daughter, Louise Read– ably assisted by two of Edward’syoung granddaughters – followed withdelight fully chosen readings thatfollow ed the theme of sailing, one ofEdward’s great joys in life.

Among the many family, friendsand eminent politicians were seven -teen Fruit erers, there to pay ourrespects and to say a last farewell toour old friend. Funeral Services andServices of Commemoration are oftentitled nowa days as a ‘celeb ration’ of thelife of the deceased. This Service wasthat very rare thing, a true celebration.All of us left with our many happymemories of Edward well refreshed

Discovery in FranceWe received an interesting communication from Past Master Donald Cryan

along with two pictures. While on holiday in France, his son Andrew founda notice attached to a tower that was entitled Le Fruitier. Unfortunately wecannot identify the text so if anyone can help the editor would be obliged. Theillustrations show the position on the tower and Andrew with his daughter Nina.

For any Liveryman who has not attended a City of London Briefingand is in two minds whether to apply ask a fellow Fruiterer who hasattended. You will always receive a very positive res ponse becausethe evening provides an inter esting and valu able insight into theworkings of the City. They are aimed particularly at new Freemen andLiverymen, but wives, husbands and partners are also welcome.Liverymen and Freemen of longer standing who have not previouslybeen to a Briefing are also encouraged to attend It is necessary toattend one of these briefings, held at the Livery Hall, 71 BasinghallStreet, Guildhall, before being clothed in the Livery.
