JULY PROGRAM

BOB VOSATKA, Educator & Science Expert, Liberty Science Center Tuesday, July 23, 7 P.M. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math: STEM Education in 2013

Educational experiences for students K-12 are becoming both more interactive and more integrated with other subject areas. There is a great push to coordinate areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math into one integrated area: STEM education.

Young children are exposed to computers and advanced technology often before they can walk or even talk. This discussion will give an overview of how we at Liberty Science Center use Distance Learning, to build advanced concepts for young learners.

The discussion will also introduce to the audience the Arduino: one of several easy to use microprocessor devices for learning computers, electronics and much, much more.

Free and open to the public. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 7 p.m. Library Lower Level OCTOBER PROGRAM October 22, Gwen Cooper, New York Times bestselling author of the memoir Homer’s Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life With a Blind Wonder Cat, and the novel Diary of a South Beach Party Girl. SORTERS AND SELLER’S CORNER Sellers: Please be sure to check the book kept in the new desk each time you come in to volunteer. Updates will be put into the book; that way we do not forget to tell any one individual volunteer of any changes. Remember that all books — except for pocket paperback books — need to have a price tag. If they do not, they need to be returned to the sorting area for pricing.

Sorters: All coffee table sized books need to be looked up. Recently a coffee table sized book was found in the "Art" section without a price, and turned out to be worth $40. We should also try to look up all non-fiction. Remember, if you are a regular sorter and haven't seen a particular book before, there’s a good chance it should be looked up.

If any current volunteers need additional help in their assigned area or would like to change to a different area, please contact Erin at [email protected].

Thank you to everyone who volunteers and makes our books sales a successful source of support for the Library.

ALL VOLUNTEERS: In light of the recent library emergency, all volunteers need to sign IN and OUT on the clipboard in the main office upstairs, or by calling Sue at ext. 4000.

WHAT WE ARE READING The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson This book won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and deservedly so. It manages to tell a compelling story while giving us an inside view into the mysterious workings of North Korea. It is a very ambitious novel—a novel that changes its mode of narration at will, and a novel that challenges the reader to separate truth from fiction. At its core, the novel is about the power of storytelling—and both the good and bad that comes from it. I highly recommend this book.
