Club Captain’s Report - The golf season is certainly in full swing now and a busy programme ahead of us for

April. The club's showpiece tournament has always been the Easter Open and this year we have raised the handicap limits to 30 for men and 36 for the ladies. We hope this will now encourage some of the higher handi-cappers to enter the competition. Please remember the tournament is run in grades and so there is always a good chance of being in the prizes within your grade by simply playing to your handicap. We have also kept the entry fee at $50 which includes a lunch or dinner on the Saturday. There are AM and PM tee times so get your entry in on the notice board or give the clubhouse a call. A high five to those who turned out for the Stewart Cup last Sunday, a wet dull day but enjoyable all the same. Congratulations to Team Fran who took out the trophy with a +15 score for the Best Ball Par competition which was reduced to 18 holes. The winning team consisted of Fran Sutherland, Nick McIntyre, Ross Ford and Blair Tilley - well done guys. April's mixed pairs event is the Robinson Trophy which is a 18 Hole American Foursome Best Nett competition. With this format both players tee off and then play a second stroke with their partners ball and then continue as normal foursomes. Entry sheet is on the notice board - if you want to play in this but do not have a regular partner please ask me or Pat, we'll sort one out! Those of you on email will have by now received the link for the Member Satisfaction Survey. This is an independent survey carried out by NZ Golf on our behalf. We are not party to the raw data and do not see anybody's completed survey or any comments made. Upon completion of the survey the results are collated and analysed by Richard Hudson of NZ Golf who will then feedback to the Committee with a general report of the member's satisfaction levels and concerns. If you are not on email please ask for a 'hard copy' from the office which can be returned in a sealed envelope for us to pass onto NZ Golf. Or if you have access to the internet type the following in the address bar at the top www.surveymonkey.com/r/totaradalegolfclub. This is your chance to have your say! Mike Hrynkiw

9 HOLE LADIES REPORT - The 9 Hole Ladies District Tournament was held on March 3rd. A great deal of

preparation from the committee and club members helped to make it a very successful tournament. We had a good turnout with 42 players registered. From comments received, everyone had an enjoyable day. The weather was perfect, the course was in excellent condition, thank you John. We were well catered for by Jackie, many thanks to you. The prizes were well received as were the raffles. We are always very grateful to the assistance we receive from Betty Ponse and Colin Nickless for collating our results. The following week four 9 hole ladies attended the Annual Tournament run by the Hanmer Golf Club for 18 and 9 hole players. There are three days of competition. This is a lot of fun. Congratulations to Lyn and Verety who won best gross in the pairs competition. Two were lucky in the raffles. Meeting and playing with golfers from all over the top of the South Island is a great experience – not to be missed! Next week we host our first Biddy Smith Challenge from Motueka – good luck team. We are also well into our year’s competitions. Sue Paine

OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE GREENKEEPER - We are gearing up for our annual Easter Tournament.

It has been a fantastic season for grass growth. The course is looking lush and green. I usually write these news letters when it's raining, and today is no different. Luckily it has been a steady rain and no heavy downpours. Otherwise we could have had some debris coming across the course at 3 fairway. The forestry company is working there at present to minimise any damage. Larger settling ponds have been put into place, hopefully to combat the problem. The grounds committee is having a working bee on the Sunday after Easter. The aim is to put in a drain pipe from the sump at 2 green across 2 fairway towards 17 Tee into the drain which flows across 9 and 1 fairway. This is to take the water away when we are releasing water from the dam. Without effecting the course in the winter when it generally is already wet. It is very rewarding to hear from out of town green fee players how they love our course. Some of them played 3 days in a row. These were golfers who played several courses in the region and rated Totaradale as the best. That is great for Totaradale Golf Club. Have a Happy Easter, cheers John

HEALTH & SAFETY - Hello from your newly recruited Health and Safety Officer (thanks Clare !!).

It has been bought to my attention that there have on occasion been concerns about players becoming unwell on the course and in spite of concerns from the golfers in their group have assured them they are” OK” only to need some assistance later in the day. Please fellow golfers it is ok to let others know if you are unwell and cannot complete your round rather than end up having a potential medical emergency on our hands. We must be responsible for our own wellbeing whilst on the course. Happy Healthy Golfing Kay Ford

MARQUEE

Due to the logistics of hiring our marquee the Management Committee has decided to sell it. If you or any one you know is interested please make us an offer.

Rules Corner As the golfing programme progresses we see the start of many Match Play competitions which can sometimes stretch over several weeks and so it's probably a good time to remind ourselves of the club's policy on matches. Page 13 in the Programme Book states:- In match play competitions all matches should be played on or before the set date. Dispensation to play after the set day may be given by the Match Committee, provided that:- a] Both parties agree b] The Match Committee [section Captain] is notified of the new date set c] The reason for not playing on the set date is of sufficient importance d] In all matches the player who is unable to fulfil match commitments is responsible for contacting partners and opponents if intending to default or request postponement. [Note: this should be done in a timely manner be-fore the set date] Probably also a good time to remind ourselves about 'concessions' and look at Rule 2-4 A player may concede a match at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that match. A player may concede a hole at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that hole. A player may concede his opponent's next stroke at any time, provided the opponent's ball is at rest. The opponent is considered to have holed out with his next stroke, and the ball may be removed by either side. A concession may not be declined or withdrawn. Recording scores:- Where your opponent concedes your putt your score for the hole is number of strokes taken plus the 'gimme'. Where your opponent concedes the hole to you, your score for the hole is the number of strokes already taken plus, in your best judgement, the number of strokes that you would need to complete the hole from that posi-tion more than half the time. This is not intended as an opportunity to record a higher score to keep your handicap out. Where your opponent has put their tee shot down the middle and you now put two balls out of bounds and then say "your hole". You put down an ESC score and your opponent records 'par' plus any handicap strokes received on the hole. Where your match has finished and you have unfinished holes, your score for these holes not played is 'par' plus any handicap strokes received on the hole. Scorecards - all cards from handicap match play must be returned for handicapping. Scorecards from matches played without handicap [off the stick] do not need to be returned however can be at the player's discretion.
