Join us for a presentation by CMC Photo Section member Larry Karasevich.
Larry Karasevich has been a member of the CMC Photo Section for 2.5 years. He
and his wife Ellen are both retired geologists living in Woodland Park. Larry enjoys
hiking, skiing, mountain climbing, 4-wheeling, camping, and traveling to new
places—all of which provide many opportunities for photography. His
photographic interests are landscape and wildlife.
In August 1974, as a college student at
the University of Cincinnati majoring in
geology, I took my first field trip out
west through Colorado and Arizona
including my first trip to the Grand
Canyon. On that trip, my future bride
and I hiked down the South Kaibab Trail
to Phantom Ranch, overnighted at
Indian Gardens and back up the Bright
Angel Trail to the South Rim. I’ve been
hooked on the Grand Canyon ever
since, making an additional 10 trips
over the next 45 years. I’ve had the
opportunity to fly over the canyon from
30,000 feet, from a single engine plane
swooping down below the rim, from a
mule, and most recently from a raft.
I’ve also hiked to the river on 4
different occasions, twice from the
South Rim, once from the North Rim
and once from Rim-to-Rim.

John Wesley Powell, the first explorer to
navigate the Colorado River in a small
boat, wrote: “You cannot see the Grand
Canyon in one view, as if it were a
changeless spectacle from which a curtain
might be lifted, but to see it you have to
toil from month to month through its
labyrinths.”
More people have walked on the moon
than have hiked the Grand Canyon from
one end to the other. Whether standing
on the rim at sunset and beholding the
vibrant colors or hiking down its steep
trails to the river or exploring its
treacherous rapids and mesmerizing side
canyons from a raft, the Grand Canyon
offers limitless possibilities for the
photographer and artist.
I will share a variety of images of the Grand
Canyon from these different perspectives,
focusing less on the iconic shots from the viewpoints on the rim and more from the other
perspectives of the canyon. An as a geologist, I’ll be sharing some perspectives on the
rocks and geologic history of the canyon that might otherwise go unnoticed by others.
Please submit 1 or 2 of your best Grand Canyon photos, particularly those representing
a different perspective. If you don’t have any Grand Canyon images, then submit photos
of other canyons you may have visited from Colorado or around the world.
Send your images to John Bickel ([email protected]) by June 9th. Name the file with
your full name. For example: “first_last_1.jpg” Limit file size to 5MB or less

The CMC’s Denver Group Council is holding elections for new councilors in early
September. Volunteering to serve on the council is an excellent way to support the
CMC. Councilors participate in the discussion and implementation of critical
decisions affecting the almost 5000-member Denver Group. In addition to a chair,
there are nine councilors who serve a 3 year term each. Three councilors rotate off
each year to maintain continuity.
Additional information regarding responsibilities can be found at:
https://cmcdenver.org/wp-content/uploads/CouncilorResponsibilities-2020-05.pdf
And at the Denver Council home page:
https://cmcdenver.org/membership/dgc/denver-group-council
For questions regarding the Council duties, please contact one of the following nominating committee members.
Sue Holden, [email protected]
Martha Delporte, [email protected]
Please submit your bio and a picture to Sue Holden (Secretary) at
These will be published for group members to review prior to September voting.
Deadline for submission is July 31st.

For 2020, the CMC photography section
is asking for volunteers to present
Shooter's Choice.
Shooter’s Choice involves selecting a set
of photographs from a hiking trip,
vacation, or any outdoor experience
and presenting them to the group.
As you are presenting each photograph,
you can include why you liked the image, how you composed it, any challenges you
encountered while taking the photo, and techniques that you used (e.g. tripod, time of
day, filters, aperture, shutter speed etc).
It's not necessary to be an advanced photographer to present a Shooter's Choice. All
skill levels are invited to participate. It’s optional, but you can ask for feedback from the
advanced photographers in the group. It's a great way to improve your photography
skills.
We look forward to seeing your photographs.
Please contact Karen Theesen at [email protected] if you are interested.

Although all events and outings have been canceled, the CMC Staff and Volunteers
have created a new Outdoor Online University so that members can learn new skills
and brush up on old skills while at home.
