of the entire team of
Proyecto Horizonte
In recent months we have
worked extensively on im-
proving our marketing and
our image outside Bolivia.
Nearly a dozen interns and
volunteers both in and out of
the country have helped with
this.
As a result, you’re currently
holding in front of you our
new “Newsletter for
Friends“. We plan to con-
tinue to update you about
our work and about current
events every two months, so
that you have the feeling of
being able to participate in
Proyecto Horizonte. Other
measures have included a
new website and a Facebook
page, as well as information
packages which can be used
in schools, companies or or-
ganizations.
It has been and always will be
our goal to maintain a close
contact with our friends. We
value the trust you have
shown us.
And, we know that our
friends are the key to greater
awareness. Therefore we ask
you to spread the informa-
tion about Proyecto Hori-
zonte Ushpa-Ushpa. Please
tell your family and friends
about us and show them the
work we are doing here.
Any support, whether large
or small financially, or in

For some time now, the vol-
unteers of Proyecto Hori-
zonte educate and inform the
residents of Mineros de San
Juan Mineros “Ushpa-Ushpa”
about the possibility of using
and disinfecting drinking wa-
ter through the SODIS*-
method. This is a simple and
inexpensive alternative to
boiling or the use of chlorine.
It all started on a SODIS Day
on October 4th. A group of
students in the school and
the kindergarten made a play
about the "Super Amigos
SODIS". In addition, on that
day all the children were in-
formed about the methods.
Tippi Taps, simple "taps",
built from plastic bottles
were made for each group of
the kindergarten.
Since then, every Friday
morning, an information ses-
sion is organized by the staff
of Proyecto Horizonte with
the members of the commu-
nity at the health center. The
topic is the importance of
clean hands and clean drink-
ing water with regards to the
health of the family. For this,
the SODIS method is taught.
The steps on how to make
Tippi Taps and how to wash
hands are taught.
Residents of San Juan Min-
eros are also informed about
SODIS outside the sessions
in the health center. On the
afternoon of our "Gran Mul-
tiferia" (the big expo of
Proyecto Horizonte) an in-
formation stand was organ-
ized in the main street of the
neighborhood. The meetings
of women’s group are also
used as another opportunity
to talk about SODIS.

* SODIS is short for "Solar
Water Disinfection." The
method was developed by
Eawag and has spread since
2001 in Bolivia by the Fun-
dación SODIS. The key con-
cept is that exposure to sun
kills water if it is exposed in
bottles.

their subjects of study, rang-
ing from inventive math
games to an elaborate replica
of a castle from the Middle
Ages. Some students dis-
played intricate wood carv-
ings and anime drawings made
with the Arts and Culture
club, and women from Tanta-
kuna also displayed their arti-
san handicrafts for the visi-
tors. The health center´s
stalls provided visitors with
information about many im-
portant health topics, includ-
ing dental hygiene and tuber-
culosis. Children practiced
washing their hands properly
with tippy taps made at the
Proyecto Horizonte volun-
teers´ stall and sampled water
purified using the SODIS solar
water disinfection method.
The entire staff and student
body of the school, the guad-
ería, the health center, and
Tantakuna welcomed more
than 120 visitors from the
community to celebrate six
successful years of coopera-
tive effort between Proyecto
Horizonte and the community
of Mineros San Juan.
On Sunday, October 24th, all
sections of Proyecto Hori-
zonte Uspha Uspha came
together to participate in the
third annual Gran Multiferia.
More than 300 staff, students,
and community members of
Mineros San Juan gathered on
the main street to celebrate
the efforts of Proyecto Hori-
zonte in the past year and to
demonstrate their work.
Much work went into the
many stalls, tents, and activi-
ties that lined the street for
the afternoon. Each grade of
the school produced their
own stall centered around
It will take some
time before there is
a permanent water
supply and a
sewage system.
SODIS will help
us now!

While access to sexual educa-
tion is hard to come by
Cochabamba’s schools, teens
in Mineros San Juan have been
taking advantage of a unique
opportunity to have their
questions answered through a
new initiative started by Aus-
tralian volunteer Eliza Wall.
The Club de Jovenes meets
weekly to discuss the things
most affecting students’ lives,
including the aspects of grow-
ing up that are so often
sources of confusion. The
club spends Friday afternoons
chatting, playing games, asking
questions, and learning about
the topics that concern them
most. More than 15 students
of varying ages and sexes have
attended since the club’s inau-
guration two months ago.
The goals of the club are that
members do not start families
before they are ready, that
they avoid preventable dis-
eases, and that they have the
information they need to
make informed decisions.
Through informal and fun
meetings, the Club de Jovenes
empowers the youth of Min-
eros San Juan to take control
of their own futures and
avoid the risks that prevent
them from reaching their
goals.

PROYECTO HORIZONTE CHRISTMAS CARDS ARE HERE!
Mery Torrico, incorporated
the anime style of drawing
with traditional Bolivian dress
to bring together the two
concepts in a representation
of their own lives in Mineros
San Juan. Along with Mery,
volunteer Sarah Sinnot
worked with the group
throughout the design and
production process. Mery
says, ¨I feel extremely appre-
ciative of the volunteers…the
help they give isn´t just
money, the help is more sup-
porting the students. The
volunteers grow together
with the kids. We teach the
children, but we learn from
them as well.¨ The cards rep-
resent a true community ef-
fort and an accomplishment
for the students.
They are now on sale for
USD 2.50 each or ten for
USD 20.- and can be

Proyecto Horizonte is proud
to offer its friends and sup-
porters Holiday greeting
cards designed by the youth
of Mineros San Juan. Over
eight weeks, more than fifteen
students of the school
worked together to create an
impressive product for the
holidays. Working under the
direction of a volunteer art
teacher, students from the
school´s Anime Club learned
different techniques to design
the drawing on the front of
the cards. The Anime Club,

Changing lives through education, healthcare, and
community development
Proyecto Horizonte is financed mainly by donations. We guarantee effi-
ciency and transparency in the use of funds and, if you desire, you can be-
come personally involved in the project’s activities.
Our current organizational structure allows us to use almost 100% of dona-
tions in the project. No administrative costs or other expenses will reduce
your donation. All volunteers work for free both in and outside of Bolivia.

of education for Children's
Services in 2003.
How did you come to the
"Proyecto Horizonte?
Thanks to "Professor" Os-
valdo... I met him in another
day care center during my
studies. My first day of work
was the 18.11.2005.
What was your first im-
pression of the "Proyecto
Horizonte?
When I first got to the
"Proyecto Horizonte" I saw
many children of all ages. I
saw that the town was
crowded with tents. There
was no water or electricity.
Which age group do you
work with?
At the beginning I worked
with the stage "Pre-school
children", then later on with
children of various ages.
What do you think about
your work in the
"Proyecto Horizonte?
It's a great job. I learn a lot
from the community, and the
mothers and fathers who
participate in the activities of
the "Proyecto Horizonte.
What do you like the
most about it?
I like to fill my working time
Raquel Vargas was the first
teacher in the kindergarten of
the "Proyecto Horizonte. She
was born in Sucre (Bolivia)
and is married to Juan Carlos
Magia. She has two daughters,
Yakelin and Litsi. She com-
pleted her studies in the field
by ensuring that the children
learn as much as possible.
What do you want the
readers of the newsletter
to know?
I would like to express my
thanks to the founders of
the project for the very fact
that we are here. I would
also like to say thank you to
everyone who has sup-
ported us from the
"outside". We think hugely
of our supporters and speak
much in class about it.
