Children can be supervised by a teacher; please provide their afternoon tea.

    28 March Sports spectacular for New Entrants - Year 2s 3 April Board meeting at 7 pm 4 April Canterbury swimming sports at Rolleston Pool - qualifying students 5 April School triathlon for whole school, organised by PALs. It will involve

    some running, swimming and biking. Children will be able to enter a short, medium or long course depending on their ability (like last year). If biking is tricky for your child, then they have a few weeks to practice their biking skills.

    8 April Parent-teacher interviews 2 30 - 5 pm; bookings will be made online. Hear how your child is settling in to 2019 and about the assessment data we have collected this term. Online bookings open soon.

    12 April ASB Get Wise Financial Literacy

    MANA AKE VISITS Each Wednesday between 1 00 pm and 3 00 pm, Liz Adams, from the new initiative Mana Ake, will be visiting Greendale School. She will be in the playground at long play, then working with classes/students, and will be available from 2 30 - 3 pm for a drop-in for parents and teachers. This is a free service, so you are welcome to ask any health and well-being questions you may have.

    Mana Ake promotes wellbeing and positive mental health for Years 1 - 8 children. Mana Ake kaimahi can help promote and maintain wellbeing for all students. They can also support groups of students or individuals who are experiencing ongoing concerns that impact their wellbeing, such as anxiety, social isolation, parental

    separation, grief and loss and managing emotions.

    The Mana Ake service is provided by people with a range of skills including social workers, whānau ora kaimahi, counsellors, youth workers, nurses and psychologists. The service can support individual children, groups of children and provide information and workshops for parents. Mana Ake kaimahi are available to support children and their families/whānau at school and at home and they will be in your child’s school regularly.

I have a particular interest in understanding human development and behaviour. I am looking forward to supporting the wellbeing of families and schools in the Malvern District.

  • From Canterbury District Health Board, 6 March 2019, regarding the Measles outbreak

    Since 26 February 2019, the number of cases in the latest Canterbury measles outbreak has been steadily climbing and as at 5 March we have had ten confirmed cases, with more likely to be confirmed over the next days and weeks. Some are children who have yet to complete their MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccinations, but four are adults aged between 27 and 50 who have had only one measles vaccination, which was standard practice between 1969 and 1990.

    Cases have now spread throughout Christchurch. Measles is a serious and highly contagious, viral disease where up to 30 percent of those who catch it will develop complications – usually children under 5 and adults over the age of 20. Measles during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, premature labour and low birth-weight in babies. Measles is spread through droplets in the air and through contact, so that anyone unprotected who has been in the same room as someone with measles will likely get it. The surest protection is for people to have had both of their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations, scheduled to be given to children at 15 months and at four years.

    As long as children of school age are up-to-date with their vaccinations they should be protected against measles. People vaccinated between 1969 and 1990 should contact their GP team who will provide a booster vaccination. People born before 1969 will have been exposed to measles and will be immune. Family members who aren’t sure if they have been immunised with two doses of MMR vaccine should talk to their GP team who will be able to provide a vaccination if they need it. An extra vaccination will not cause any harm. Measles symptoms include: A respiratory type of illness with dry cough, runny nose, headache; Temperature over 38.5 C and feeling very unwell; A red blotchy rash starts on day 4-5 of the illness usually on the face and moves to the chest and arms.

    More information about measles is available at http://www.immune.org.nz If you think a child at your school has measles, keep them away from other children until they can be collected and taken home. If they are already sick they should stay home for at least five days after symptoms such as a rash appeared. Once measles has been in your school, parents of any children who are not fully immune (2 doses of MMR) are advised to keep them home for 14 days from the likely date of exposure.

    A few things have been ticked off the school calendar over the past two weeks: *Swimming lessons with Christina have finished (with thanks to the PTA for their support) *Bus Safety has been revisited with the whole school, and our bus monitors have been trained by Constable Rick *Parents heard a talk about speech language with Sarita from MoE *Swimming sports at Greendale and Hororata Pools (with thanks to families for coming along to support your hard-working children)

    This Friday promises to be a fun day as we have House Colour day, as well as our annual Elgregoe magic show, which focuses on “Being Bully-free”, and Jacqui Adams will be working with students, leading art lessons for the Sheffield Show.

    It is with sadness that we received a resignation from Sarah Busch, from her cleaning and caretaking positions. She will remain as a Teacher Aide. You will note a position vacant notice on our Community News page.

    Musings from Mataī…

    Congratulations to everyone for awesome efforts at the Swimming Sports! Wonderful to see our learners stepping up to challenges and encouraging others. Looking forward to taking the group of Malvern swimmers to Rolleston next week for the next level of challenge - swim your best and enjoy the experience!

    Our focus has shifted a little from water and swimming… to rocks! On Tuesday, we took a walk down the road to the river bed to each find our own special rock. This is inspired from the beautiful book, Ishi. Our special rocks will help us to learn more about ourselves, our feelings and what we can do when we are feeling “a bit stinky”. We will be naming our rocks, creating a profile page for them, and making connections with our own names … finding out why we were given our names and how names and their meanings can tell stories of who we are and our whānau. We are also in the process of writing recount texts about finding our rocks to share with the other classes.

    Seed library: There is now a seed library at the Darfield Library that everyone is welcome to use. The rules of how it works are with it. It’s a fantastic opportunity to grow different plants.

    I can't believe it is Week 7 already! We welcome Essie Mayberry to our class. The children have been learning about the Very hungry Caterpillar this week as our letter is

    C. Next week we will be looking at the letter i and the short vowel sound it makes, as in insect.

    We also had the experience today of making porridge. This is to accompany our storytelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children had mixed results but on the whole it was generally tolerated!

    The children are doing well with their reading and remembering their reading folders and readits every day. Poetry is sent home on Fridays by Mrs Leech. If a

    child forgets their reading folder, I will not send a book home as our books are very precious and they need to be cared for. It is less likely they will get scrunched and crumpled in a bottom of a bag if they are in a reading folder.

    You may have noticed your child has a new Maths book in their reading folders. We call this an AWS Maths book. This is to be done for homework and sometimes we use them at school along with the Mathletics programme. The expectation is that children do reading each night. If they want to do maths, this is great as well, but it is a big ask for some of them. The Level One books start off reasonably easy, focusing on numbers 1 to 5 and have a few activities to complete. As they move along, the activities become more challenging and the numbers become more challenging. Ideally a page a week is great; some students are so keen they race through it, which is also fine as long as they understand.

    Most of the children are working on pencil control and forming their letters and numbers correctly, which AWS focuses on at the beginning. It would be great if the AWS books come to school every day and I will use them as “early finishers” activities for Maths. Keep up with Mathletics, as points are collated and children are given certificates once they reach certain points. Passwords are in the front of the readits. There are also rewards for getting to certain nights’ reading which align with the stickers your children can get in their readits. We also do rewards for AWS when we reach every fifth page.

    Medication should be in original prescription packaging, with your child’s name, dosage and medication name clearly visible. Medication in blister pack should remain in that packaging.

More details nearer the time. Drama opportunity in Greendale: We have a good number of students taking up this opportunity on Thursday afternoons with Nickie Hughes from Christchurch. After the first lesson last week, the students were buzzing, it’s so exciting to see! Swimming Sports qualification for Malvern on 19 March We have 16 Year 4 - 6 students who qualified for the Malvern Swimming, to be held next Tuesday at Rolleston. We hope they enjoy their day out swimming and representing Greendale. Student Record Sheet (on pink paper): The information listed needs to be checked, signed and returned to the school office, whether or not changes are required. We are still waiting for 30 forms to be returned.

    George’s version of The Lion and The Mouse: The lion is snoring. He woke up and caught the mouse. He said “I am going to eat you.” The lion did not eat the mouse. The lion got stuck in the trap. The mouse helped the lion by eating a hole in the trap. The lion go out of the trap. The lion and the mouse are friends.

    Saphia’s version of The Lion and The Mouse: One day there was a lion. After a big snack he fell asleep. Then a mouse crept onto the lion and started to bounce and jump, then slide down his tail and up his tail. Then the lion woke up and put his paw on top of the mouse and the mouse said “Let me go.” “No, I will eat you,” said the lion. “Oh King, please let me go and I will help you one day.” “Ha, ha, ha … you will help me?” said the lion. “Yes, ok then,” and he lifted his paw and the mouse walked away happy. The lion went the other way, The hunters made a trap for the lion. After eating some bones, the hunters caught the lion and he roared and roared and roared. All of the animals, also the mouse, heard the roar. The mouse said “Don’t worry, my King, I will help you with my sharp teeth. Nyum, nyum, nyum.” The lion was free. “Thank you, mouse.” “No worries,” said the mouse. “By the way,” said the lion, “do you want to slide on me and jump on me?” “Oh, yes,” said the mouse, “weeeee!” Then they lived happily ever after.
