First off, it was such a blast to kick off with Book Week, thank you everyone for making it a fun and memorable event!

Here's an update from the School Council:

Learning through play

Following on from the last newsletter, I mentioned the School's vision for developing an outdoor masterplan to allow more play experiences for our students. To give you a better idea on what this may look like throughout our grounds, here are the areas that have been targeted to facilitate this student growth:

School Leadership Message – Glenn Butler, Alison Rees, Christian Holdsworth and Bianca Gatherum

What a week full of fun, colour and celebrations!

On Monday we enjoyed celebrating Book Week (a week early due to Year 4 Camp), Thursday we supported the Pyjama Foundation to raise awareness and funds for children in foster care and then on Thursday evening we celebrated STEM Week with the Year Two Family Science night. We also celebrated the contributions our Education Support Staff make to our school community as a part of ‘National Support Staff Week’. Thank you to our teacher support, administration, Health Centre, Library, speech pathology, social work and grounds keeping staff for all they do to contribute to the holistic learning environment that is Mount View Primary School!

Staffing Update Due to a number of developments there has been a restructure and additional employment in the Year 3 team. Firstly, Stacey Sberna, who has co-taught in 3BS with Louise Barrett, will be on extended sick leave into next term and will not be returning to her regular duties this year. Secondly, Ali Walker, who has co-taught in 3SW with Bridie Stillman, will change roles having been selected as an additional Teacher of the Deaf at Mount View. In consultation with the Year 3 team, consideration was given to employing two new part-time teachers to work in 3SW and 3BS. This was considered, on balance, to be more disruptive for the students. The alternative of employing one new full-time classroom teacher for 3BS and relocating Louise Barrett to co-teach with Bridie Stillman in 3SB (formerly 3SW) was agreed, by the Year 3 team, as the strongest option. A staff selection process was undertaken to choose a new full-time teacher for 3BS. The successful applicant, Mark Coulston, has four years teaching experience at Eltham College and a wide range of schools through ANZUK

Educational. Mark will begin his time at Mount View with the Year 3 Planning Day on Friday, 17th of August. His first day with 3MC (formally 3BS) will be Monday, 20th of August. Rebecca Koh, a teacher will three years experience at Middle Park has been selected as the successful applicant in the recently advertised two day-a-week ‘additional support’ position. Rebecca will co-teach, one day a week with our Year 3 Learning Specialist Felicity Hall-Shulman in 3FS. This appointment is also associated to Stacey Sberna’s leave as it is a role she previously filled. The appointment will allow Felicity to continue the work each of our seven Learning Specialists do as collegiate coaches with the staff in their respective year levels. Rebecca will also work closely with the Prep team as a part of the K-P 2018-19 Transition. The Year 3 teachers will continue to work closely in order to assist the students through this transitional process. We are confident that all students involved will adjust readily to the new arrangements and continue to make great gains in their learning with the support of a dedicated and talented team of Year 3 teachers.

Principals in the Classroom & Junior School Council

The JSC has been given the amazing opportunity to help in create 2 new playgrounds to encourage more socialisation within our school. The JSC, the voice of the students, is currently asking for suggestions from students to understand what they would like to see in these playgrounds. We have already booked sales consultants to come help us by providing designs of interactive structures to suit our school.

The students will soon have the chance to vote for some fun and interactive equipment they would like to see featured in the new playground. The JSC representatives will record these suggestions and then we will arrange what equipment we will need to get from the consultant.

We would like to thank the JSC team, Mrs Irani and Ms Wynd for their time and effort. We would also like to thank Mr Holdsworth for his support and flexibility in this project.

This week it has been terrific to work with Sana, Kavin and the JSC on this joint Carnival and Parents’ Association funded project. It was great to see the way Sana and Kavin organised their task and set out an action plan to get the project moving. They clearly identified their goal, articulated it to the JSC and the set about ‘working their plan’. They showed great confidence booking appointments with playground providers and even organised a Google Drive to share our ideas.

I look forward to working with JSC on the project and am extremely excited at the prospect of delivering two new playgrounds to the students THIS YEAR!

ICAS – Bianca Gatherum

NAPLAN ONLINE 2019 PREPARATION

In 2018, The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commence the transition from a paper

based to an online assessment. Our school is making this transition in 2019. From 2020, all schools across Australia

will conduction the NAPLAN tests online.

NAPLAN online is delivered to schools via the Online National Assessment Platform. It is via this platform that tests

will be administer. Students complete the tests via a secure locked down browser on a device, IPAD’s. The LDB

prevents students from accessing the internet and other functionality (such as spelling checks and grammar).

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has responsibility for the central

management of NAPLAN and is leading the transition nationally.

SCHOOL READINESS TEST

As part of this transition, all schools with be administering a NAPLAN Online School Readiness test (STR). This test is to

give our school the opportunity to confirm our ICT capacity, to determine the most effective way to deliver NAPLAN

Online and to provide teachers with an introduction to the tests.

The SRT involves students completing an Omnibus and a writing test. The Omnibus test is for all students in Years 3-5

(Reading, Convention of Languages and numeracy domains). Year 3 will only complete the Ominbus test. Year 5 will

also complete a separate online writing test.

We will be conducting this SRT on Wednesday 29th August (Ominbus Year 3 & 5) and Friday 31st August (Year 5 only

Writing test).

Please note there is no results from completing these ONLINE tests, they are solely to see how the school’s ICT

capacity withholds.

Parenting Ideas – Developing Responsibility in Kids

Many parents ask me how they can develop responsibility in their kids. The answer is simple – give responsibility to them! Let them feed the family pet, empty the dishwasher, clean up the living area at the end of the day. Most kids rise to a real challenge when it’s sincerely given, and backed by realistic expectations.

We tend to give responsibility to the kids who don’t need it – the easy kids. But we often ignore the kids in our family who really would benefit from having some trust – the difficult kids, those that require following up. Sometimes the extra parenting work they require can seem all too much.

Belong through contribution

Kids belong in two ways in families – they either belong due to their positive contribution or they belong through poor behaviour. The family pest has as much cache as the responsible child – their parents certainly know they are around!

It makes sense for parents to work hard to provide opportunities for kids to contribute to their family so they feel valued for what they bring to their family, rather than for what they take.

Here are five practical tips to promote a sense of responsibility in your kids:

1. Start from an early age. Children as young as three are keen to help and take some responsibility but we often push them away and say, ‘You can help when you’re older.’ Train your kids from a young age to make a contribution so it becomes habit-forming. Remember, not every child will help equally. If your children are school-aged and do very little to help, then start with a few jobs each day and gradually increase the number.

2. Give kids responsibility that scares or surprises you. A neighbour gets her four year old to unpack her dishwasher each morning, plates and all. Another parent I know gets her five year old to help her younger sister get her breakfast each morning. Another gives over the weekly garbage to ten year old with no reminders whatsoever. In each case, the kids rise to the challenge set by their parents. Give your child or teenager something that makes you think, ‘NO WAY’! He can’t do that! Kids will often surprise adults with what they can do.

3. Make sure the responsibility is real. Setting the table, making beds, tidying rooms are jobs that others benefit from. Giving kids jobs because you think it’s good for them just don’t cut it with kids. However giving jobs that others rely on teaches them that their help is needed.

4. If a child forgets then no one else does the task. If a child doesn’t empty the dishwasher then it still there when they come home from school. Sounds tough but that’s how the real world operates. When you empty it, it becomes your responsibility. When we’re time-strapped it’s usually easier to do kids’ jobs for them. Nothing wrong with this once in a while as we help each other out in families. However, if you are always doing a child’s job then it may as well be yours.

5. Place help and responsibility on a roster. The use of rosters has the advantage of placing responsibility on to kids and takes you out of the picture. Remind them to check the roster, not to do their jobs! It’s a subtle but important difference.

Many parents call this type of responsibility ‘jobs’ or ‘chores’. I prefer to call it ‘help’. It’s just a little rebranding, but it reflects what it’s about.

Year 2 and 3 AFL Card Swapping Club This term Year 2 and 3 students can trade their AFL cards in a safe environment every Monday in Mrs

Diedrich’s room. It is from the end of lunch ending time until middle bell.

We like this club because lots of people are coming and everyone is trading fairly. Feel free to come and join

us.

REGIONAL GIRLS SOCCER

On the 14th August a group of girls attended the Regional Girls Soccer Championships. We played 3 matches. We won

one of our games which was a great effort by everyone. Overall, we came 3rd place. Special mention to Saskia and

Isabelle’s for their winning goals. The day was sunny and we made new friends with students from the other schools.

We had great chats. Special thanks to Mr Simpson for coaching and making this day possible.
