www.olivenhain.org 1 Welcome to the middle of summer. I am sure many of you have had some summer travels as my family did and hope they went smooth. As much as I love to travel and visit different parts of our great Country, we certainly do live in a beautiful City which is always so nice to come back to. I do wish the summer would slow itself down a bit so we can enjoy it for all its worth! One thing I am looking forward to seeing is the Summer Olympics. These athletes train for years to try and be the best of the best, not just in a league or a school, but the world. It is special to watch and enjoy and great to be able to cheer on our Country and celebrate the winning medals. Just last week I had the pleasure of meeting Monique Henderson, a homegrown San Diegan and Olympic medalists for track and field. I thanked her for working so hard representing the United States. I want to thank those of you who attended the July 4th picnic this year and especially Stan Cole who fired up the grill for all to enjoy. The picnic was scaled back this year as the majority of us on the OTC BOD were out of town but it sounded like everyone had a great time. It is so nice that we have the Meeting Hall grounds available to share with the community on days like this. Movie Night Alert: It is that time again for the Olivenhain Cinema Series. This is a time to grab your lawn chairs, blankets, food, and drink, come down, grab a great seat and enjoy a movie in a family atmosphere. The movie nights have been such a success the last two years we are expanding to four nights this year. The nights will be every other Friday starting August 10th and we will begin the movie at sunset or as soon as we can see the film on the big screen. The concessions will be served up by our Olivenhain 4H group so please support them on the night of. I want to extend a very special thank you to our Sponsor for the Cinema Series, Hay House Publishing. Hay House has been the sponsor for our Cinema Series now for the last few years and it is so great that they continue to support us and help bring these family gatherings to the Olivenhain Community. Many of you probably own the Colony Olivenhain book that Hay House publishes. Please plan on coming a little early to grab a good seat. Please note that the restrooms will be open in the Meeting Hall for these events and no outdoor restrooms will be available. Olivenhain Fire Station Alert: As my family got back in town the second week of July from the East Coast, I was very excited to spot something and I am sure many of you have as well. Our Olivenhain Fire Brush Truck cruising around town. Now it is not running 24 hours yet, but certainly a step in the right direction and something that has brought me much more comfort in knowing that emergency services are that much closer to home. I do want to extend a thank you to the Encinitas City Council for implementing the services in July and making this happen for our community. I will be looking forward to having the 24 hours service but these are things that do take time to get into place and it is moving forward in the right direction. With the help of our community supporting our events and separate donations, we have made some great strides in the rehabilitation of the Germania Hotel. We have electrical wiring complete, and drywall down stairs complete. It certainly is exciting to see the progress and as many historical rehab’s it is one step at a time. With the Cinema Series in August, we will not be hosting an August General Meeting, so keep an eye out for a September meeting if we decide to have one. We are still looking for Volunteers to help us in creating a new web page as well as future Board members. If you are interested, please let anyone on the Board know. Thank you to the membership committee for the continued growth that has been happening. It is great to see the numbers trend in the upward swing. Please keep reaching out to friends and neighbors so we can continue this growth. Enjoy summer and see you at the Cinema Series! “Colony Olivenhain” History Book

In 1981, Richard Bumann, descendent of one of the original colonists, published a local history book titled Colony Olivenhain. The original printing sold out long ago, but thanks to a very generous donation by publishers Kristina and Reid Tracy, the Olivenhain Town Council has made this book available once again, and will be able to use all the proceeds from the sale for renovation and repair of the Germania Hotel. You can order using the order form on the cover sheet, or stop by and pick one up at the Postal Corner in

Olivenhain Platz, on the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Encinitas Boulevard.

License Plate Frames

Chrome license plate frames are available at the Postal Corner in Olivenhain Platz. for $30 plus tax. All

proceeds go toward maintenance of the Meeting Hall, the Germania Hotel, and the Meeting Hall grounds.

Beer Steins

Colony Olivenhain Beer Steins are available at Postal Corner for $13 plus tax for a 25 oz. Stein. These are the best Beer Steins ever!

Olivenhain Cookbook

The Colony Olivenhain Cookbook compiled by Debbie McCauley has over 500 recipes collected from members of the community. All the proceeds from the sales of this cookbook go to renovate the Germania Hotel. The cost is $15 (including tax), and you can pick them up at the Postal Corner in the Olivenhain Platz at

the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Encinitas Boulevard and at Olson's Car Wash on El Camino Real.

Community Events — Scott Woodward

OLIVENHAIN SUMMER OUTDOOR CINEMA SERIES RETURNS … We are pleased to have Hay House Publishing as the sponsor of the Outdoor Cinema Series for the third year in a row. Their generosity has made this ever popular event

possible.

Movies will begin at sunset. Admission is $5 per person and $10 per family. Concessions will be available. Bring a blanket or/or

chairs.

Following are the movie selections for this year’s series:

August 10, Wall-E August 24, Puss in Boots September 7, Shrek the Third

September 21, Mirror Mirror

OKTOBERFEST 2012 … This year’s Oktoberfest has been scheduled for October 14. Make sure you put this in your

calendar and reserve the date.

The OTC is very thankful for the generous grant from the City of Encinitas and Mizel Family Foundation Community Grant

Program to continue the restoration of our Germania Hotel.

Wonderful progress has been made this year!!

Bart Smith with DNZ Partners (at no charge) drew up the plans for the OTC and helped us get the permit from the City of Encinitas for electrical service, handicapped ramp

and handicapped bathroom.

John Knowles with Sun Coast, the general contractor for the project, got the electrical hooked-up, the hotel wired, the handicapped bathroom framed in, the new exterior landing on the west side of the Hotel installed, and the whole

downstairs ready for drywall installation.

Stan Wegrowski with Active Drywall did the drywall

installation and wall texturing for a very reasonable price.

This is a huge step forward for the Hotel to be available for use. It may even be used this November for venders during the Craft

Fair.
