President’s Message by Frank G. Swarner III

Please contact Frank Swarner at [email protected] if you would like to be a club member to volunteer to help the Brandywine Trout and Conservation Club.

The 2017 Trout Season is underway and the East Branch of the Brandywine was running a bit high due to the

rain on Friday the day before Opening Day. The Trout were a bit tough to catch unless you were a seasoned veteran that has seen their share of tough fishing conditions and knew how to deal with the higher flows and muddy water.

The East Branch of the Brandywine was stocked pre-season on two separate occasions by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission with the help of a few volunteers, including some of our BTCC club members. One our

members made two home made float stocking tanks and was able to float stock two sections of the stream. The Trout

the PF & BC delivered were rather nice and many were above average. A few 18”+ Trout were stocked as well. Plenty of Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout for anglers to have fun with if you have able to hook into them since opening day.

The shad are definitely at Conowingo Dam right now, but we need some warmer air temperatures to warm the water temperature up so they will be in an aggressive mood to chase and attack shad darts, spoons, mister twisters,

and various other lures. If you never been to Conowingo Dam, it is a great day trip this time of year to fish for various species as well as watch the Eagles and the Osprey’s soar!! Conowingo Dam area is a year round fishery depending on

what species you plan on targeting. Just be sure not to target Striped Bass while fishing from the Conowingo Dam

face downstream to the Lapidum Boat Ramp. Even if you plan on catch and releasing them, it is still not legal this time or year. Also, all shad species are catch and release only and are not to be kept.

The Free Kid’s Only Trout Rodeo will be held on Saturday April 15 from 8am—2pm. Registration will start at 8am and fishing will start at 9am. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for us and will be a bit warmer than it has been

this spring. Even if it doesn’t warm up for us I’m sure there will be some “enthusiastic” young fishermen and

fisherwomen that will cope with the elements and show us adult’s how it’s done!! We typically have a good turnout of members to lend a hand when needed, but we could always use a few

extra people to help out at the event. We do have a few “loaner” rods that the kids can borrow, but if you have any extra please feel free to bring them to the Kid’s Rodeo. A lot of people have never fished before and they typically

need help with what bait to use and how to properly bait the hook. A quick lesson tying a few simple knots always helps out as well. Please take some time and help us make it a great day for all the kids on the stream!!

The Members Only Rodeo will be a two day event held on Saturday, May 6 from 8am - 8pm and

Sunday, May 7 from 6am - 4pm. There is some work that will be necessary prior to the rodeo and I would like to ask any and all of our members to volunteer some time for your club.

Trout Fishing Tips, Tricks and Techniques Know the Current – If you understand how a river or stream is shaped by moving water you’ll be able to find trout

very easily. Deep pools created by the current can hold a big trout, but smaller trout can also be found in them. The large trout will most likely be in these pools during dawn and dusk.

Choose Your Lures Wisely – It’s really important to pick the right lures. Using the wrong type could make you miss out on opportunities. Some lures may be too heavy for the creek you are fishing or too light for the stream you

are fishing.

The Best Live Bait – Hands down night crawlers are an effective live bait for catching trout, along with minnows and crayfish. A neat trick is to take a look at what lives on the shore of where you’re fishing for trout and see what might be

native to their lunch or dinner menu. Mayflies, when native to the area, can be deadly during the fall season.

The Silver Spoon – Trout love to bite on a small silver spoon. The best way to use this to your advantage is to buy a

spoon that mimics a minnow. Very easy use. Just cast it out, retrieve it and watch it flutter and flash!!

On Saturday April 15th from 8am—2pm the BTCC will be holding it’s sixth annual Kids Only Trout Rodeo, rain

or shine. Registration will start at 8AM and the fishing will begin at 9AM. Registration is so we can get a count of attendees for our reference and so we can share that information with the Pennsylvania Boat Commission. The event

will be free to children 15 yrs of age and younger. Junior BTCC memberships will also be available at the event. Average size Trout along with some Trophy Trout will be stocked at the Lower Rodeo Hole, and the Pavilion

upstream to the Buttonwoods. The Trout will be spread out so there will be opportunities for every child to see and

hopefully hook a Trout or two. Plenty of Golden Trout will be stocked as well. The kids always love watching the “goldfish” swim around in the stream. Prizes will be awarded to the three largest trout landed. One prize per winner.

The kids involved with the rodeo should perform their own casting and landing of fish with limited help from their parents. Also there is to be no chumming at this event. This Trout Rodeo is for the kids to learn the basic skills

of angling which will also help them gain a sense of self accomplishment and pride. BTCC members will be available to lend a hand to parents and children with casting tips, knot tying lessons,

baiting of the hook, landing of Trout, and any other help that may be required.

Our club has very few junior members and as most of you know, valuable outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, are not being included into their lives. Our club aims to promote not only fishing, but also encourages

respect and responsibility for the natural world that provides us with food, water, oxygen, and the wildlife we all
