Sometimes the Best LureAction Is No Action

By Babe WinkelmanWhether you're jigging, rigging, cranking, spin-ning, spooning, worming or popping, there are lit-erally infinite ways that you can impart action onyour bait. For jigging you can swim it, drag it, hopit, drop it, twitch it and everything in between.The same thing applies to retrieving soft plastics. When casting or trolling crankbaits, there's noend to what you can do with those either. Rip 'emfast, slow-roll 'em, wobble 'em at the surface, thelist goes on. And with topwater poppers, prop baitsor "walkers," you can work them violently or withsubtle finesse. The savvy fisherman is always tinkering withlittle nuances in the retrieve, to dial in the precisepresentation that fish respond to on a given day.Sometimes they want it fast and furious. Otherconditions will call for slow and lazy. However, there's another presentation that Ihaven't yet mentioned, and it's often the best one.That, my friends, is to do nothing at all. Before Iget into ways you can do nothing, let's first con-sider the creature we're after: the fish. Fish must eat, that's obvious. And like everyother predator on planet earth (humans included),fish want their meals to be easy. It is a naturalinstinct to expend as little effort as possible whenfeeding (or attempting to feed). Survival dependson maintaining body mass and energy levels -because let's face it, when a fish isn't eating he'sbasically trying not to get eaten himself! With that said, ask yourself: would the averagefish rather chase a racing, zig-zagging minnow oreat one that's just hanging around? Most of the

time, they'll take the easy meal. So next time you'refishing, serve up a simple snack. This is really easy to do when jigging or fishingwith soft plastics. In a walleye scenario with ajig-and-minnow, pitch the jig to your chosen spot(let's say it's 16 feet down on a rocky hump). Letthe jig reach bottom and let it just sit there. As-sume a walleye has seen it drop and has rushedin to investigate. Maybe he inhales it right away,or maybe he's nosing it and waiting for it to makeits next move. During this period, pay very closeattention to "feeling" a bite or seeing your fishingline twitch. If nothing happens after 10 secondsor so, give the jig a hop and let it go motionlessagain. If fish are there, and they're hungry, youwill get bit! Do-nothing soft plastics for bass can be espe-cially deadly. A lot of bass guys call this "dead-sticking." I remember a particular day on a goodbass lake when every largemouth I caught wason a dead-sticked Senko rigged "wacky style."I'd make a cast, reel up the slack, and just wait.Sometimes it took several minutes before a roam-ing bass came upon the bait and sucked it in, eventhough it was just lying there on the bottom. Dead-sticking is particularly effective whencatching bass and panfish on spawn beds too.Find a bed, pitch a soft plastic into it, and eventu-ally the fish guarding that piece of real estate willpick up the lure to get it the heck out of there. To dead-stick crank baits, there are two lurestyles involved: floaters and suspenders. Withfloaters, simply twitch or retrieve the lure andthen stop. Let it float to the surface and sit therefor several seconds. You'll be amazed at howmany strikes you'll get when it's sitting still. It'sthe same drill when you're working topwater baits(poppers, prop baits, etc.). For suspenders (or neutrally-buoyant)crankbaits, retrieve the lure down to its desired

depth, stop, and let it hang there. Try this justbeyond the outside edges of thick underwaterweedlines. Gamefish will tuck into those edgesfor cover, then dart out for unsuspecting baitfishthat get caught loafing around. Even spoons and spinners, especially whenfished vertically, can be dead-sticked. And natu-rally, any type of live bait presentation underneatha bobber (float) is a fairly motionless bait and aneasy target for a hungry fish.
