D ear Parents & Guardians, Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 3, 2014. A large part of this newsletter is devoted to the Grade 12 report on their trip to Rabaul and Lihir. Having been with the students this time I can testify to the value of the Grade 12 excursions. The range of educational experiences provided for the stu- dents is such that other schools anywhere in the world would have great difficulty matching both the content and quality. Many thanks to Mr. Korerua for arranging the excursion, to Newcrest Mining as a company and to the Newcrest personnel involved for the amazing welcome given to us. A special thank you is given to Mr. Jimmy Peter whose attention to detail ensured that the programme proceeded like clockwork. Many thanks to all others involved both in East New Britain and Lihir who contributed in any way to the success of the programme. It is hoped that the relationship between Kimbe International School and Lihir will be further developed with students from Lihir coming over to West New Britain for a sim- ilar educational visit. The work of Mahonia na Dari and the sustainability sections of NBPOL and Hargy would be of particular interest as well as the processes involved in oil palm plantation management and palm oil production. As you should know a video presentation to the music of Pharrel Williams was pro- duced by Ms. Bethan Mair Jones during Week 1. Many thanks to everyone who has given permission for the school to use photographs and video clips of their children for promotional purposes. It is hoped that we will be able to upload the video onto the internet over this coming weekend. We are now in full swing preparing for the musical presentation of the biblical story of Joseph in Week 7. Please encourage your children to be present at any practices that they should be at - in particular if they have a principal role. The production of a musi- cal such as this is aimed at, amongst other things, developing team work, commitment and time management. It is important that the participants learn to maintain their standard of work across the curriculum in addition to taking part in the show. If any parents or friends would like to purchase advertising space in our show pro- gramme and have not already been contacted please get in touch with Mr. Simbiken. This Saturday our Grade 12, 10 and 8 teachers will begin a programme of additional classes in preparation for the external examinations. These classes are, of course, op- tional but I would encourage all students to take advantage of this extra input from our teachers. Remember these lessons are not compulsory for the teachers either—they choose to provide them to try to help our students to achieve the best possible results in the examinations. D ear Parents & Guardians,

Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 3, 2014. A large part of this

newsletter is devoted to the Grade 12 report on their trip to Rabaul and

Lihir. Having been with the students this time I can testify to the value of

the Grade 12 excursions. The range of educational experiences provided for the stu-

dents is such that other schools anywhere in the world would have great difficulty

matching both the content and quality. Many thanks to Mr. Korerua for arranging the

excursion, to Newcrest Mining as a company and to the Newcrest personnel involved

for the amazing welcome given to us. A special thank you is given to Mr. Jimmy Peter

whose attention to detail ensured that the programme proceeded like clockwork. Many

thanks to all others involved both in East New Britain and Lihir who contributed in any

way to the success of the programme.

It is hoped that the relationship between Kimbe International School and Lihir will be

further developed with students from Lihir coming over to West New Britain for a sim-

ilar educational visit. The work of Mahonia na Dari and the sustainability sections of

NBPOL and Hargy would be of particular interest as well as the processes involved in

oil palm plantation management and palm oil production.

As you should know a video presentation to the music of Pharrel Williams was pro-

duced by Ms. Bethan Mair Jones during Week 1. Many thanks to everyone who has

given permission for the school to use photographs and video clips of their children for

promotional purposes. It is hoped that we will be able to upload the video onto the

internet over this coming weekend.

We are now in full swing preparing for the musical presentation of the biblical story of

Joseph in Week 7. Please encourage your children to be present at any practices that

they should be at - in particular if they have a principal role. The production of a musi-

cal such as this is aimed at, amongst other things, developing team work, commitment

and time management. It is important that the participants learn to maintain their

standard of work across the curriculum in addition to taking part in the show.

gramme and have not already been contacted please get in touch with Mr. Simbiken.

This Saturday our Grade 12, 10 and 8 teachers will begin a programme of additional

classes in preparation for the external examinations. These classes are, of course, op-

tional but I would encourage all students to take advantage of this extra input from our

teachers. Remember these lessons are not compulsory for the teachers either—they

choose to provide them to try to help our students to achieve the best possible results in

the examinations.

The ‘Habit of Mind’ for each of Weeks 2, 3 and 4:

Week 2: Thinking Flexibly - Look at it another way!

Week 3: Thinking about your thinking (metacognition) - Know your knowing!

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the sec-

ond edition of news

and events in the

Grade One class-

room.

Our Theme

Our focus for this

term is ‘Egypt’

where we will look

at some of the cul-

tures of ancient

Egypt and compare

it with our own cul-

tures here at Kimbe

and the rest of PNG

as a whole.

Language & Reading

We are focussing on

questioning espe-

cially before, dur-

ing and after

reading of books

in class.

Mathematics

The study of

weight, length

and money will

be looked at in

our Maths les-

sons. We will also

have a café to

sell items like

rubbers, pencils,

balloons to prac-

tice buying and

giving change.

We will be using

money from 5t to

K2.00.

Brief Overview

MEEP—Mahonia Na dari

Instead of swimming, the

children had fun walking

on the sand and reef

OUR VISIT TO NUMUNDO CATTLE FARM

Page 6 Kimbe International School

The Right School For Your Child

As most of you are aware, during the semester one break, at the end of June, the Grade 12 students accompa-

nied by Mr Jones, Mrs Jones, Ms Symond and myself, Mr Korerua, went to Rabaul and Lihir for a two (2)

weeks long excursion.

This was the longest excursion ever taken by any group ever since the first excursion in 2009 and it involved

not only one (1) province, but for the first time, two (2) provinces; East New Britain and New Ireland.

What had been planned since 2012 when the students were in Grade Ten (10) had materialised and this was

surely an eye-opener and life enriching experience for everyone on the trip. They visited a lot of geographical,

historical, cultural, social, educational and industrial sites and institutions in the two provinces during their

visits.

Three quarters of the group had been to Rabaul previously and for a quarter of the students, it was their first

trip to Rabaul. One of the distinctive features of Rabaul which caught the attention of most of the group was

the road network system which was one of the best, if not the best, in the country. Most of the roads were

sealed making travelling more comfortable for the general public.

And yes, who could ever forget, for the ninety nine percent (99%) of the group, the highlight was climbing Mt

Tavurvur Volcano. One secret which I had always kept all these years and which I wish to disclose now is that,

I finally made it to the top of the volcano on my sixth (6th) attempt. I think I finally had the guts to climb this

volcano because Mr Jones kept on telling me that I had no evidence to prove that I had already climbed Mt Ta-

vurvur and that I should climb because he(Mr Jones) would make it to the top and that it would be a shame if

I didn't ! Thank you Mr Jones for the challenge and inspiration.

Then came the unforgettable and life-enriching visit to the island of Gold, Lihir, where the group was hosted

by the Newcrest Mining Limited for a week. This was the first time for everyone in the group to travel to this

beautiful island and the moment Air Niugini Q400 touched down at Kunaye Airport, Lihir, on Thursday, the

26th of June, there were sighs of excitement and there was relief in the faces of the students since they realized

that they were finally setting foot on the island after two (2) years of planning and fundraising.

The group’s visit and stay on the island was coordinated by the community Relations and Sustainability De-

partment of the company and the mentor and the team leader was a very intelligent and ever reliable bloke by

the name of Jimmy Peter. Just by looking at his name, one would mistake him for an expatriate, but no way, he

is a Papua New Guinean! He is definitely a very interesting character and could speak a couple of languages

including Kombe in West New Britain Province.

The hospitality and treatment provided by the company was second to none and everything was provided at

their expense. What also makes this trip to Lihir and particularly the visit to the mine special was the fact that

Kimbe International School was the first school from outside the province to visit the mine. This surely is an

achievement for our school as well as a gesture of goodwill for the company as they were more than happy to

have us on board.

This trip was clearly the best trip so far that I had coordinated and was a part of. There were many parties who

had contributed and had collaborated towards the success of the trip and, on behalf of the class, I would like to

take this opportunity to thank each and every one.

To give you a glimpse of the trip, each group member has reflected on their experiences.

Happy reading!!

The trip to Rabaul and Lihir was a life time

experience for me. I learnt a lot from this

excursion and saw a lot of marvellous places.

Climbing Mt Tavurvur in Rabaul would be the

best experience for me, it was magnificent!!

And then Lihir! It is the most wonderful

place! If I had a wish to be anywhere right

now, it would be Lihir.

The trip was exciting from the moment I set

foot on the plane to Rabaul till the last day of

the excursion.

Big thanks to My Class Patron.

Patricia Nellie Chan

It was a pleasure to tag along with the Gr

12s of Kimbe International School to Ra-

baul and Lihir and back to Rabaul. Even

though I had transferred out this year to

POMIS, seeing my former Principal, Mr

Jones brought back old memories. Seeing

my class patron Mr Korerua was some

what an over joy. Rabaul was awesome!!

But Lihir ahaha it was EPIC! First time for

all of us and we all enjoyed it to the fullest.

I made friends that I know and we will still

want to meet later on in life.

OIL IS THICKER THAN BLOOD!!

Nano-Levi Korimbo

The trip to Rabaul and Lihir was FANTASTIC! It

was the best learning trip I had ever experienced

with friends. The days in Rabaul and especially

Lihir will be a Life time experience that I can never

forget and hope one day I go back to that beautiful

place. Lihir is made up of a beautiful and friendly

community, and the mine makes it the better.

Samantha Kolonga

Thanks to all the people who

made it possible.

The excursion was SUPERB!

Benardine Mirio

It was an awesome experience vis-

iting a world class Gold mine such as

Lihir. The hospitality was great and

every single part of the trip was awe-

some!!

I miss that place to bits. Rabaul was

also fun. Mr Korerua and anyone

who had a part in helping to organize

this life-enriching trip deserve the

credit as it was worth more than

gold!!!

Joshua Mungore

The trip to Rabaul and Lihir was

the best trip I had ever travelled

in my lifetime and the experience

and exposure gained has changed

my mindset as to what I want to

become in the future. I wish we

could go for another trip as it was

more than what I had expected;

truly inspirational and amazing!!!

Gareth Oembari Chilling on Mt Tavurvur Volcano

The whole trip was totally AWESOME from

day one. Learning was fun and successful.

It was my first time to be in Lihir and it

definitely isn't my last. Mega thanks to

NEWCREST MINING LTD for making our

stay impeccable. And a very special word

of thanks to Mr Korerua for initiating and

ensuring that this trip eventuated from a

dream which started in 2012 when we

were in Year Ten.

The two weeks trip to Rabaul then to Lihir

was something we all would treasure. Two

solid years of fundraising, hard work and

effort, our objectives and dreams had come

true!

In Rabaul we learnt about the history of

certain historical sites and also visited

caves and not to mention the best part,

climbing up Mt Tavurvur.

In Lihir we were taken to the mining sites

where we were given a tour of the mine

site, and surrounding communities including

schools and villages. Simply AMAZING!

Jason Kamilo

No one could imagine the excitement I got.

I have never been to Rabaul and had never

thought I would set foot on Lihir Island.

Travelling to places I’ve never been to with

my class is SUPER AWESOME!!

Climbing Mt Tavurvur was the most ex-

hausting part of the excursion. I finally got

to be outside of the school environment

and came face to face with what I have

been learning in the classrooms.

Stella-Marie Mu’uh

The Trip was EPIC!! It really

put me in suspense when I

The trip was a moral booster educationally and in all a

new environment was a BONUS! Though the excursion

was hectic it was a memorable one!

Everything on the trip and every-thing I saw was just magnificent!

The food, places and people. The time I had there on the trip, both in Lihir and Rabaul has had a tremendous impact on my life, physically and mentally.

A big thank you to the Grade Twelve students and Mr Richard Korerua for having

me on this wonderful trip to Rabaul and Lihir Gold Mine. It was a great privilege for

me as it was my second time to go on such a trip and to have gone to places which

serve as life experiences.

RABAUL

I enjoyed the first lot of excursions in and around Rabaul. Visiting the historical sites

like the two (2) different tunnels which accommodated underground hospitals, a

workshop and a kitchen was so amazing.

Another visit to Mt Tavurvur volcano site was cool as we ended the day cruising the

Simpsons Harbour and to well-known Dawapia or the Bee Hives as it is called.

Dawapia is a historical site and also a cultural site.

LIHIR

From the historical and geographical backgrounds in Rabaul we then moved on to a

mining oriented environment. The people in Lihir were very friendly and it was evi-

dent that they still practised their cultural and traditional lifestyles. Although civili-

zation has come to the island, and development has taken its course, culture is still

a strong identity; it is valued as much as the spin-off benefits they are getting from

the mine.

The sustainability programme is very inspiring. To have community Relations Offic-

ers like Jimmy Peter working with the communities brings the people much closer

to the company as their voices are addressed through such a programme. The pro-

gramme looks into the future, into what they call “Life After Mine”. What they have

launched and are working on is to prepare the indigenous Lihirian for that phase of

Life.

Ms Symond

Page 12 Kimbe International School

I really enjoyed the trip to Kokopo and Lihir. Both were educational and pro-

vided valuable experiences for all of us.

The grade 12s were a team, coming well together and took advantage of eve-

ry opportunity provided. The highlight of the visit for me was visiting the local

village near the mine and experiencing their warm welcome and hospitality. I

also enjoyed the quiz night at Lihir Secondary School; in fact everything was

enjoyable - learning through doing. I never expected a gold mine visit could

be so interesting…...
