    NOVEMBER M K , M I S S I O N A R Y A N D T H I R D - C U L T U R E A D V O C A T E 2011

November 4th, 2011. Thirteen young adults from around the continent converged on West Chicago fora weekend of comparing life stories, exploring MK issues, videoing interviews, and laying the foundation for a

new, more complete picture of who the modern MK is. The vision for the weekend had wakened me in the

middle of the night back in September, but I thought it would be too expensive and complex to pull off. I

hadnt counted on Gods provision through you. You, my friends, made the Kitchen Sink Summit possible

through your shared enthusiasm, the power of prayer, and generous giving that covered expenses.

From the moment they walked in, these young adults representing 21 countries began to share not only their

stories, but their hearts. They wept as they described some of the relational and transitional hardships

attached to their MK label, and they burst into contagious laughter every time someone shared an

embarrassing story to which only other MKs could relate. And all the while, my camcorder was rolling...

collecting hours of new material to work with. It was a magical, productive and stimulating weekend.

    If it werent for you...

    A GALVANIZING MINISTRY:

My life has been so full this fall. Invitations to speak in small groups, churches

and illustrious institutions like Moody Bible Institute have kept me busilydeveloping new materials. Ive consulted with transitioning MKs, with member-

care professionals, and with missionary parents facing difficult decisions. Ive

fielded hundreds of emails and some vitriolic responses to MK-articles Ive

written. God has been moving! I cant describe how exhilarating it is to see

people finally understanding how a life in ministry affects MKsand how

important it is for The Church to recognize its impact on young souls!

As galvanizing as these activities have been, the Kitchen Sink Summit topped

them all. Seeing adult MKs laying themselves open to help a younger and more

vulnerable generation connected me in a powerful way to the heart of my

calling. This is a battle for the sake of the wounded, and I couldnt be morejoyfully committed to developing new methods to meet their urgent needs.

FROM THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE SUMMIT:

I felt revived. I felt furiously cared for. This weekend has given me renewed hope for

    personal, mental and spiritual health.

It has been so freeing to share my heart and the struggles of transition with people

who are in the same boat and understand.

There were so many mixed emotions that surfaced, but it was cathartic and healing.

For the first time in years, Ive had the chance to process and vocalize the strugglesand hurts Ive experienced. Im excited to see how God is going to use our

    experiences to heal others.

This was an emotionally draining weekend, yet an encouraging and fortifying and life-

    giving one as well.

It was rich to be able to go back in time and celebrate what was.

The summit was a healing balm and a chance to be heard and understood.

Be shepherds of Gods flock that is under your care, watching over them not because youmust, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be.
