From the Pastors DeskReflections on Thanksgiving

It is difficult to believe that November is right around the corner. This means that Thanksgiving is coming up quickly. I

thought I would use this article to give some reflections about Thanksgiving.

When did Thanksgiving become a holiday that meant stuffing our faces so full that we need to unbutton the top button of ourpants and then sit around to watch parades and football gamesthe whole time thinking that this truly reflects what Thanks-giving is all about?

I do not know the answer to that question, but it seems to me as I reflect upon Thanksgiving that this image totally distorts the

intent behind having a National Day of Thanksgiving. Think back to the first Thanksgiving. American Indians. Pilgrims.

New England. The whole point of this event was that the American Indians of this country brought food and shared with thepilgrims who without this help may or may not have survived throughout the year. Thus, the pilgrims were thankful for thegenerosity of others and how God provided for them in the midst of difficult times.

How does this translate to our situation today? Should Thanksgiving be a time for us to sit back and enjoy how blessed weare? Or should this be a time for us to remember how God has blessed us and use this as a reminder that we need to share withothers who are not as fortunate? What is a better way to spend Thanksgiving: stuffing our faces and watching football or help-ing to serve at a soup kitchen?

The traditional text for the Day of Thanksgiving is the story of the Ten Lepers. Recall that there are ten lepers who encounterJesus and plead to be healed. Jesus heals all of them. Then later, only one of the lepers returns to Jesus to give thanks. Jesusasks, where are the other nine? From this story, it reminds us that we should be like the one leper who returns and gives

    thanks for what has occurred.

    :TextI Kings 19:1-18

(All Saints Day)As a way to call the Israelites to faithfulness and remain in the covenant that God made with them, God raises up proph-ets who speak for God. One such prophet is Elijah. After Elijah kills 450 prophets of Baal, he flees for his life because

he is afraid. As he flees, the Lord speaks to Elijah in the still silence.

    November 10th:TextAmos 1:1-2; 5:14-15, 21-24

We continue focusing upon the prophets. As the people of God are settled into the two kingdoms (North and South),

they become more lax in their living out the covenant of God. Amos is a prophet whom God raised up not out of Jerusa-

lem or from the order of priests, but from the fields. Amos clearly announces Gods concern for justice. The peoplesacts (festivals and sacrifices) have little meaning if people do not seek to live out justice and righteousness.

    November 17th

    :TextIsaiah 9:1-7

Isaiah, one of the most significant prophets, announces the coming of a righteous king. Isaiah proclaims the coming of

the promised one of God who will change everything. This is to remind people of Gods promise to David that someonefrom Davids household would rule over Israel forever. The message also inspires hope among all the people as manywere questioning where God was at.

    November 24th

    :TextJeremiah 29:1, 4-14

Jeremiah is a prophet during the time of the exile. The exile is the time when the Southern Kingdom is conquered and most

of the people are taken away and relocated to Babylon. Jeremiah tells the people that God is still in charge for God is theone who is using Babylon to punish Israel through this exile. However, God will remain faithful and He will fulfill His

promises and lead the people back from exile to the Promised Land. Until that time, the people are to build houses, plant

    gardens, and marry have children.

the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.
