Guns Attack,

This newsletter is intended for our Family, friends, and supporters and

is an effort to give everyone a glimpse into our happenings as an organization

and share news from Kuwait and Fort Hood. During last month’s sensing

sessions, I urged our Soldiers to share this newsletter and to bring our loved

ones into our experience as an organization. With that said, as you read this

newsletter, you will quickly discover the impact and importance every

member of our TEAM plays in successfully accomplishing our mission.

From our Soldiers conducting 24-hour maintenance on both vehicles and

aircraft to pilots conducting joint and partnered missions and Family

Readiness Groups across the Battalion holding events, we are a humble and

proud ATTACK BATTALION focused on taking care of people and getting

the mission accomplished. Enjoy this month’s newsletter and thank you for

How do we continue to “strengthen our unit” throughout the deployment? If you remember

back in August, as we said our goodbyes to loved ones, I challenged the Soldiers and Family alike to

remain vigilant in four areas: Mental Toughness, Spiritual Fitness, Physical Fitness, and

Communication with Family. It is commonplace to get into a rut or begin to feel isolated while

deployed or at home without a spouse, mom, dad, brother, or sister, etc. Talk about these important

aspects of the deployment with one another and find creative ways to maintain your resilience.

Family Readiness Groups continue to provide critical communication for our Families while

coming together to host events and build the TEAM. Tremendous job on the Trunk-o-Treat! The

pictures said a thousand words and Julia filled me in on the wonderful event! A special thank you to

Mrs. Katie Sprankles for her time and efforts in coordinating the Family event! Events such as the

cake walk, best costume, best decorated trunk, bounce house, pumpkin painting, and banner to send to

Kuwait all made an enormous impact on the Battalion. I call it pure and simple “EFFORT” that we

cannot accomplish without our volunteers! Thanks again to our FRG volunteers and the many Family

members who helped make the Halloween event successful! I continue to encourage our Soldiers to

make sure their loved ones have access to their FRG leader’s email and phone number. Another great

resource for information is the Guns Attack Facebook page.

Enjoy this month’s edition of the Guns Attack Newsletter!

Thanks to our Families for all they do in support of our Army, their Soldier, and this Battalion!

As always, it is an honor to serve as your commander. Take an active role in making the Army

and this unit better every day!

GUNS!!

October was a busy, but quick month with several fun activities. We started off the month with

a number of Soldiers participating in the Army 10 miler shadow run and kicked off the Combined

Federal Campaign (CFC) with Cigar Night and a cookout at the Oasis. And several Soldiers ended the

month participating in the Camp Buehring Zombie Mudder, celebrating Halloween.

With all the fun times though, Soldiers are still performing around the clock maintenance on the

flight line and at the motor pool. Our aviators and staff continue coordinating/conducting joint

operations with our sister services, along with maintaining our partnership with the Kuwaitis.

Companies also continue to take advantage of the ranges and MOUT (Military Operations in Urban

Terrain) sites located outside Buehring. D Co completed a five day field training exercise off Buehring

that covered several Warrior Tasks from vehicle convoy to room clearing and many more, outstanding

training.

Congratulations to PFC Robert Weaver, Alpha Company for winning the Soldier of the Month for

October. Great Job!! Congratulations to those graduating the Warrior Leader Course and to the five

Soldiers for making it into the last WLC Class for the year, here at Camp Buehring.

A big thank you to the FRG, Rear-D and all our Volunteers for making the Trunk-o-Treat a

successful event, awesome job…

For this month’s newsletter, I thought I would focus on the dedication and perseverance of the

maintainers who worked hard to get these helicopters flying to where we can now sustain our training

objectives. For a few weeks, we were forced to sit back and watch as very little flying took place, but

for good reasons. The crew chiefs, maintainers, maintenance test pilots worked long hours, day and

night to ensure that each maintenance problem was solved ending in a safe helicopter for all aviators to

fly. In over 19 years of service in Army Aviation, I’ve never seen a fleet of helicopters requiring so

much work, over such a long period of time. Our maintenance personnel truly brought these airframes

back to life. Hats off to all of you and thank you for keeping us flying!

One crew chief that stands out is PFC Robert Weaver from A Company. Everywhere you see

him, he has a smile from ear to ear, whether it is on the flight line or riding that red bicycle of his to the

gym. Always professional, on and off work, ready at all times to launch and recover his helicopter and

once again greet the pilots with that never ending smile. I have yet to hear anything other than praises

coming from others. PFC Weaver, keep up that awesome attitude and you will thrive in your military

career. Congratulations on winning the Soldier of the Month board! Too bad we can’t convince you to

become an officer…I am sure you will make an outstanding 1SG!!

HHC Bounty Hunters

Bounty Hunters Family,

October has come and gone with remarkable speed as we continue to progress in

our efforts of partnership and training. The Bounty Hunters have been working hard, starting out the

month with a range for the M4 rifle on the 7th. On the 10th, members

of HHC participated in the Army 10 miler shadow run hosted here at

Camp Buehring, with everyone finishing within 1 hour 45 minutes.

Vehicle training has also been prioritized, with personnel becoming

familiar with the use of our up-armored Humvee’s that we need to

utilize for missions. The Company has also spent their time in the

engagement skills trainer this month, honing in on more advanced rifle

skills.

Major events included the

re-enlistments of SPC Gilbert of the

S6 shop and SPC Daniels, one of

the Command drivers, a Chaplains

open house on the flight line for all

GUNS ATTACK Soldiers, and the

CFC Kickoff Cigar and Stetson night planned by LT’s Mangan

(HHC) and Baker (of A Co). The Bounty Hunters have also been

hard at work improving themselves, completing the DA required

Structured Self Development courses in order to qualify themselves

for advanced military schooling while giving the Soldiers the

opportunity to earn college credit at the same time.

The FRG is always looking for more volunteers, especially as we have members of our Family

who are expecting within the next few months. CPT Lorange’s wife, Judy, gave birth to a baby girl,

Liliana, on 17 OCT at 1214. We are also expecting new members from Vicki

Bush (wife of PFC Bush in the S6) in December, Robbie Kennebrew (wife of

CPT Kennerew form the Medical Section) in January and from Rachel Noyola

(Wife of SGT Noyola in the S6) in January. Amber is getting Bounty Hunter

onesies made for the new additions to our Family. She is also willing to help

pass on anything else that can be used to help the new babies of the formation.

Keep strong and keep supporting the Soldiers throughout the

deployment. We continue to work everyday to train and complete our mission

in order to come home. Thank you

and god bless.

Family and Friends of the Panthers,

What another great month for Alpha Company! As I sit here writing to you today it has

cooled off greatly here in Kuwait and our Soldiers are enjoying the beautiful mid 80 degree weather.

The weather isn’t the only thing that is changing here; as October has come and almost gone, Alpha

Company has begun to fly more hours across a wider set of missions including continuous aerial

gunneries, and overwater flights.

We’ve also had an exciting month here as one of our Soldiers, PFC

Weaver, won the Soldier of the Month Board for October! His dedication and

constant drive for excellence has been recognized across the Battalion and he

represented Alpha Company well.. We are also excited to have SPC Kim

graduating from WLC this month. His presence on the flight line has been

missed but we will be happy to have another WLC

graduate amongst our ranks. October hasn’t been

all work as Alpha Company’s Soldiers have been

able to attend several trips to the Kuwaiti Malls

and some even participated in an MWR trip to a

local golf course. We also held a BBQ at the

end of the month where the whole Company was

able to gather and enjoy SFC Wood’s

cooking and play Volleyball. The

Company was also able to recognize

SSG Jennings for his five great years

of service to Alpha Company. His

mentorship, professionalism, and drive

have helped Alpha Company

accomplish its mission across multiple

deployments and at home.

As we say goodbye to October, 1SG Witmer and I would

like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the family members and

friends of Alpha Company. It is always encouraging to hear

Soldiers laugh and tell stories

from back home. Know that as

we approach the holiday

season your love and support continues to propel us forward and

lifts the Soldiers of Alpha Company up so we can accomplish our

mission until we can be reunited with our families again. I look

forward to sharing our adventures from November with you!

Diamondbacks Families and Friends,

It’s official. The spookiest time of the year is here as Halloween and free candy (for the kids at

least) closes in on us! The Diamondbacks had a busy October in preparation for more training to come

as the year comes to a close in the following months.

The Diamondbacks were engaged in multiple

events throughout this past month and the Soldiers

worked diligently at each task at hand. The beginning of

the month saw the aviators participate in an Aviation

Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) exercise

over the course of two days. The exercise focused on

operating in a linear battlefield with crews conducting

reconnaissance and deliberate attack missions against a

mechanized force. The event forced crews to fly in an

environment that was occupied with air defense weapon

systems and allowed training at the team level. The

iterations were a great refresher on the operating

environment and we plan to conduct more iterations in

the coming months. We also continued preparations for our field exercise coming up in November by

conducting another Command Post Exercise. The Company set up all of our tents and organized

equipment for an 11 day field problem supporting 1st BCT.

The Diamondbacks continued its support of Trimmier Elementary school at the beginning of

the month. A local hospital hosted a Skeet Shoot

fundraiser for one of their children’s clinics.

Trimmier Elementary was involved in some of the

hosting duties and we had two of our Soldiers help

run the sign in tables and help set up/tear down the

event. The event was a success and the school

was very excited to have our assistance.

On the 19th, several Bravo Company

families took a day at a local pumpkin patch to

enjoy some outdoor fun and find some great

pumpkins for Halloween. The kids enjoyed the

petting zoo, bounce houses, hay rides and more

throughout the morning. We look forward to the

trunk or treat event this weekend and hope to see

you there!

4-227TH ATTACK RECONNAISSANCE BATTALION

Happy Halloween from the Snake Eyes family at Ali Al Salem!

October has brought some cooler weather in the low 70’s at night and in the early morning. As

stated by CW2 Pyburn “I will be wearing my jacket and beanie to the gym. It’s cold!”

This month, the 386 Expeditionary Wing, our Air Force hosts, held Rock Fest which included a

day of Halloween related activities and a concert performed by local talent from here at The Rock on

Ali Al Salem. They performed covers of songs from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Our very own

SPC Rodriguez sang two songs during the performance. He sounds just like Marc Anthony!

The Snake Eyes have participated in some exciting training events

this past month. We conducted a joint gunnery with United States Air

Force and Marine assets as well as Kuwaiti Air Force assets. It was a very

unique experience, especially for the pilots who have not previously

deployed with an Aviation unit. We are continuing to work on our

partnership with the Kuwaiti Apache units. Several Snake Eyes had the

opportunity to go into Kuwait City and get the grand tour from one of the

Kuwaiti Squadron Commanders.

The drivers were insane,

houses enormous, expensive cars

such as Lamborghini's, Porches, and Aston Martin’s plentiful, and

the food delicious. MAJ Youseff took the group to a Lebanese

restaurant. He took the liberty of ordering for everyone. First

came what CW3 Ward assumed to be the appetizer. Not 10

minutes later the small snacks were replaced with a table full of

food. This table was meant to seat 8 comfortably. CW3 Ward

dug into the wide array of meats, breads, dips, and potato dishes

with fervor. After about 10-15 minutes he was told that this was

only the appetizer. The look of shock that washed over his face

was priceless. Both the main course and dessert followed.

Needless to say, the car was sitting a little lower on it’s springs as the car pulled back into Ali Al Salem

that night.

It’s always an exciting day

when we recognize Soldier’s who

are doing exceptional work

making missions happen. This

month we recognized SPC Odell

and SPC Ungles with Army

Achievement Medals for their

outstanding work during Warrior

Focus, part of our train up prior to

deployment. Congratulations,

and keep up the good work!

D Co Unforgiven

UNFORGIVEN Family and Friends,

Our Soldier’s have continued to work at an

amazing pace since our last newsletter. To date, we’ve

completed two 500 hour phase maintenance inspections

and are near completion of our third. A 500 hour phase

maintenance inspection is an enormous undertaking where

we literally remove all of the aircraft’s components,

inspect them, replace them if they are worn and finally put

everything back

together. It takes

a total team effort

to complete a 500

hour phase to

time and standard

and it would not

be possible

without the

extraordinary

teamwork that

our Soldier’s put

on display every day. While we have many more 500 hour

phases to come, I can confidently say that I know we have the

best people in the right positions to accomplish each and

every phase safely and

on time.

We also completed our first field training exercise since

our arrival in Kuwait. We focused our efforts at being able to

convoy to a given location and setup our company command post.

We accomplished those tasks, plus we threw in some other

interesting training to challenge our Soldiers. The Unforgiven

team provided instruction in combatives, field first aid, night

vision goggles drivers training and room clearing procedures.

1SG Corr and I are extremely proud of three Unforgiven

Soldiers who have been recognized for their outstanding job

performance. SPC Smith and SPC Whatley were both recognized

by the III Corps command sergeant major for their diligent efforts

on aircraft maintenance and SGT Whitaker was recognized by the

36th CAB command sergeant major for his outstanding work as

the combatives instructor at our field training week.

at the end of the month. He has been hard at work with Maintenance Platoon and can’t wait to share

his experiences. Please inquire with my wife & FRG Leader, Jessica, or your key caller to get your

child added to SGT Barry’s mailing list if they are not on there. The upcoming FRG events are a

cookie exchange that the Battalion will be planning. Spouses and family members will be making

Greetings Equalizers Families and Friends, The past month was full of exciting changes and new opportunities for Equalizers. Throughout

the month, the Equalizers have been very busy supporting multiple operations around the Battalion AO

while also conducting personal development classes at the company level. The Equalizers capitalized on

multiple training opportunities as we conducted two more ranges since being in country. The Soldiers

were very enthusiastic about training as we broke out the “Big GUNS” and conducted EST and live fire

ranges on both the M2 and the M240B weapon systems. Soldiers of the Equal-

izer team have also dived into safety with CLS and Rollover H.E.A.T. training.

Congratulations to our

Distro Platoon Sergeant SSG

Willoughby and his wife Rebekah

as their Family added a new addi-

tion. On 23 OCT little Maliyah

Renee Willoughby joined the ex-

tended Equalizer Family. We

also had standout performances

from SPC Rhone as she won the

BN Soldier of the Month Board

and gained promotable status by acing her Enlisted Promo-

tion Board and PFC Nguyen on achieving excellence at our motorpool and for his efforts he received

our corps Command Sergeant Major Scott C. Schroeder’s coin. We also welcomed his visit. This

month the Echo FSC also added some flare with new Company t-shirts and a Company Organizational day

in which DISTRO platoon lead the way. It was a lot of fun and different activities for our mighty Equaliz-

ers to be part of and divert from our daily tasks. In conclusion we ended the day with a Company picture.

Our FRG

continues to work

hard on its event,

“Battalion Walk to

and From Kuwait,”

which encourages

all spouses to log

all miles walked,

ran, and/or biked

over the entire de-

ployment time

frame. The event promotes health and fitness but focuses primarily on morale support to all deployed

service members in the unit. The participants have logged over 1000 miles towards our overall goal

of 7600 miles, which is the distance between Fort Hood and Kuwait. I’d like to thank all of the

Spouses, family members, and Equalizers supporters who are participating in this event and I wel-

come everyone else to join in on the fun. If interested in participating please contact our FRG leader

Guns Team,

Time is flying by! Another busy month

is behind us. From Fall Clean-Up, to the FRG

Steering Committee meetings, to ensuring our

deployed brothers and sisters are taken care of, the

Rear Detachment has been on the job to ensure

successful mission accomplishment. Our team has

also been working hard to provide the essential

support needed for our Soldier’s Families.

This month we’ve had FRG meetings for both

the Battalion and the Brigade, received multiple

personnel, conducted equipment inventories,

transfers and shipments, and hosted the 4-227th

ARB Trunk or Treat. The trunk or treat was a huge

success with a great turn out! In addition to the trunk

or treating, there were plenty of activities for the Families such as a bounce house, cake walk, pumpkin

painting and a Spiders in a Jar guessing game. We also had a Best Costume and Best Decorated Trunk

contest. I was impressed by the numbers that attended despite the unit being deployed. This wouldn’t

have been possible without the teamwork from the FRGs, FRSA and the Rear D team. Also, a special

thanks to our FRG treasurer, Katie Sprankles, who coordinated the event.

Finally, I want to introduce a new member of our team. SGT Chilcote has been with us for a

month and has shown us a work ethic that is impressive to say the least. In addition to his daily duties,

he has been assigned the Family Readiness Liaison (FRL) for the Rear Detachment. As the FRL he will

ensure all FRG matters receive the attention and support that they deserve. With a new month ahead of

us, comes new challenges, and his support will be invaluable!

On 15 October 2013 the Secretary of the Army, Joseph Westphal, Ph.D., addressed the top

priorities that he has for FY14. Listed at # 1 on the priority list was Prevention of Sexual Assault. For

the Secretary of the Army to list Prevention of Sexual Assault on this priority list portrays the

following.

1. It is important to our Leaders from the top on down, that Soldiers and their Families members are

being educated on the preventive measures of Sexual Assault

2. Those individuals that choose to violate the policies put in place will be held accountable for their

unprofessional and unbecoming actions

3. Everyone at all levels hold the responsibility and obligation to do all they can to safeguard

America’s sons and daughters, as well as maintain the trust between Soldiers, Civilians, Families and

the Nation.

If there is an incident do not hesitate to report it. There are Sharp Representatives in each unit

Dear Soldiers and Families,

November is the month of gratitude. We give thanks to God for the earth’s bountiful harvest,

for friends and Families, for the very gift of life itself. It is a time for us to reflect on the many

blessings we have received over the past year, and pray for continued blessings through to the New

Year. After living in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the previous eight years before becoming an Army

chaplain, I have many fond memories of the magnificent fall colors of that region. The desert doesn’t

quite live up to Minnesota’s brilliant show of fall colors. That is to say, desert living doesn’t have such

dramatic seasonal changes; however, I am beginning to notice subtle changes occurring here in the

desert. The weather has become cooler, and it rained for the first time today. What a refreshing

change from the intense heat we experienced in August. The more I live in the desert of Kuwait, the

more I am beginning to appreciate the unique seasonal changes it offers to its inhabitants.

As we journey through this month of gratitude, I encourage you to approach others with a

thankful heart; I encourage us all to give thanks to God for the loving relationships that sustain us

during this time apart from each other. I end here with a spiritual reflection on gratitude, and invite you

to take a deep breath, quiet your mind, and mediate on the message given:

A seeker once went to the holy woman in the desert because life had become too chaotic and he

yearned to have balance and order restored within him. The desert woman said to him, “Your

life is chaotic because you have become dependent on change, on excitement, on variety. You

want always to experience something new instead of finding what is new through the repetition

of what seems old. If you would have balance and order within, do one small thing at the same

time each day with gratitude in your heart and slowly the tattered fragments of your life will be

bound together into a textured tapestry of beauty. It does not take great doses of hardship –

only one small thing done every day at the same time with gratitude in your heart. One small

thing every day, at the same time, with gratitude in your heart. One small thing, every day,

same time, with gratitude. And that will be enough.”

Ask yourself the question, “How does the activity of my life keep me from practicing

gratitude?” May the blessing of God be with you and yours.

With a grateful heart,

CH Caruso

4-227TH ATTACK RECONNAISSANCE BATTALION

The FRG and Bravo Company Family members have been very busy during the month of October. Last week, the FRG conducted a bake sale at the 4-227th AHB hangars to raise money for future FRG events.

Above the FRG leaders pose with Julia Perry, FRG Senior Advisor, during the Trunk or Treat event.

FAMILY READINESS GROUP CONTACTS

with the Battalion and local area. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your
