How can someone who is new to rowing begin?

If they want to join a group of masters competitors, they may be able to learn to row at their local club. But most rowing clubs do not yet have programs geared for the general public, for non-rowers, for people who could benefit from rowing but who do not wantto compete or row outdoors.  If these non-rowers simply want to get regularexercise using indoor rowing machines, their options are limited. They are better off than they would have been a few years ago, since manyYWCAs now have rowing machines available alongside the treadmills andelliptical machines.  In some communities, there are exercise studios based on rowing machines.Unfortunately, most communities do not have thatopportunity (yet).  Some personal trainers now use rowing machines.  But ifsomeone does not have access to

INDOOR ROWING FOR HEALTH

For the Novice and the Lapsed Athlete - by Dustin Ordway

"Great motivation for both the novice and the lapsed athlete to adopt ahealthy and balanced approach to daily exercise, this book has the potentialto change and lengthen your active life."Jo A. Hannafin, M.D. Olympic TeamPhysician, 2004; Member, FISA Sports Medicine Commission; Three-timeNational Champion.

It is no secret to rowers that rowing is good for you.  What may come as asurprise, however, is that moderate daily rowing can be as good for yourhealth as the more demanding training competitive rowers of all ages pursue. And the rowing machines competitors use to train and test themselves workequally well for the 65-year old novice looking for a safe and effective way to exercise.

The book "Row Daily, Breathe Deeper, Live Better" is intended to serve as atool to encourage and empower folks who are novices or non-rowers to beginrowing on their own.  Holding a talk, training session or camp on theconcepts in the book may help more novices begin.  As the book says, it isnot intended to motivate; we all have plenty of motivation to get regularexercise.  The challenge is fitting it into your schedule and doing iteffectively.

Two first-time indoor rowing weekend camps based on "Row Daily" arescheduled for the beginning of October 2009, to be held at the CraftsburyOutdoor Center in Vermont.  The goal is to review not only the basics of howto row on a machine but also how use it effectively for health so thatcampers leave with a working understanding that will serve them well athome. www.rowdaily.com

INSURANCEby Mariner Insurance Group

Trailering and Insurance

What everyone should know

about insuring your shell to travel,

carrying others shells on your

trailer, and the liability involved.

Scenario 1- Carrying your own

shell on your car: Pretty simple stuff here, but a few things to remember. If you

i n s u r e yo u r s h e l l t h r o u g h yo u r homeowner’s policy, check to see if it is covered while being transported off your

property. Some do, some don’t. If you have it insured on a small boat policy it usually is covered while being transported, but be safe and check. If your shell flies off

the rack and hits another car following, then the liability is on your auto insurance.

Scenario 2- Putting your shell on

a club trailer for transport:

This is where it can get more complicated. Many clubs insist that you

cover your own shell for property damage. So don’t count on the club to pay for damages while your shell is in transit by

someone else. Yes, it might be their fault that they didn’t strap it on correctly, but most commercial club policies only cover

club owned boats. So better have your own insurance before allowing someone else to transport it. If your shell flies off and hits a car behind then it would be the club’s auto

insurance that would respond as a liability claim. Not to say that they may not try to go after both the club and the shell owner.

It is always best to check with your insurance agent.

From a Club’s Perspective:How can a club protect itself form a

claim if they are transporting other’s shells?

We know every club has transported

non-member’s shells, so what can a club due to protect itself from an owner coming back and trying to make the trailering club

pay for damage while in transport. 1. Get evidence of insurance from the

shell owner.2. Use a Trailering Agreement. (see

sample next page)3. Don’t charge $. If you do so you

may be subject to interstate transport

rules. You should check the states that you are traveling through, if you do.

4. Care Cus tody and Con t ro l Exposure- If you do take on a transport and charge you maybe subject to a Care

Custody and Control exposure for other’s property. This is generally excluded from Commercial General

Liability Policies and because it is transportation it gets even more complicated involving Motor Truck Cargo Transport Insurance, and you

can’t charge enough to pay for that.

5. Best practice- Don’t transport

someone else’s equipment if you don’t have to. You are just taking a chance.
