Dear Parents, As the weather has become colder, a number of pupils sensibly choose to wear outdoor coats to and from school. May I remind you that our school uniform clearly states that any coat must be either predominantly plain black or blue. Hoodies, fleeces and scarves have never been part of our uniform and they are not permitted. If your son or daughter comes to school by bike, it will help if they are as highly visible as possible. Lights on a bicycle definitely help, as does the wearing of high visibility jackets or bands. Reflective badges which can be put on bags are freely available from Miss Cross. If your son/daughter cycles to/from school, please remind them of the importance of road awareness. Pupils must always pay attention to pedestrians and road users, and they should always stop and check for oncoming traffic at junctions. We want all pupils to arrive and depart safely. The overwhelming majority of your sons and daughters arrive to school on time, ready for the beginning of the day at 8.40am. They look smart, alert and eager to learn. As all pupils know, if anyone arrives late they have to attend a ‘same day’ break detention. If any pupil is late on more than two occasions in any one week, not only will they have to attend a break detention, they will be in a detention until 4.00pm on Friday with me! Punctuality is such an important lesson for life beyond Broughton and we are determined that everyone arrives to school on time. Today we welcome a new Learning Mentor, Mr Paul Wallace to our staff. Mr Wallace is a highly experienced senior teacher who will be working specifically with a targeted number of Year 10/11 individuals who need additional support, guidance and ‘encouragement’ to perform at their very best in and out of lessons. In response to a number of requests from pupils, we shall be allowing pupils to play on the all-weather pitch at lunchtime, so long as they wear the correct trainers. This is a great facility and we are keen to make maximum use of it, whilst ensuring it is well- maintained. At the first PTFA meeting of the year, Mrs Rukin outlined a proposal relating to the purchase of a Broughton sports kit for several of our teams. At last week’s PTFA meeting it was unanimously agreed to donate £2,000 to pay for all the necessary kit. As always, if you are happy or unhappy with any aspect of life here at Broughton, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is [email protected]. • Lancashire Remembers The Centenary Festival of Remembrance Armistice 100 ''We Will Remember Them''

Netball Throughout September and October, the Year 9, 10 and 11 girls participated in the Preston Schools’ netball league. On Wednesday, 31st October, the finals were held at St Cecilia’s where all of the schools met to play for their final places. All pupils involved gave an exceptional performance and it was fantastic to see the standard of netball and the number of girls participating in netball across Preston. Each of the three leagues included twelve teams. The final standings were:

Year 9A 2nd place Year 9B 4th place Year 10A 3rd place Year 10B to be rearranged to play for 7th/8th place Year 11A 5th place Year 11B 11th place

Well done to all forty seven pupils who represented the school in any of the netball teams.

    Mrs Hough

In homework club at lunchtime last Thursday, it was evident that so many pupils were working together with mutual respect care and support for each other. Some pupils were explaining strategies and concepts to each other whilst others were testing their friends helping with revision. It was a pleasure to be on duty in there.

Most notably the boys from Year 8 and Year 11: Joshua Philipson, Alex Tyson,

Oliver Williams, Archie Macleod, Rory Hastings, Dan Eastham and

    Iain Simpson. Mrs Hardman

Mr Grindrod, Musical Director of East Lancashire Concert Band, invites you to an evening of remembrance at Preston Guild Hall on Saturday November 10th at 7.00pm. On the 4th August 1914, Britain went to war. Many expected the war would be a short one, with the Allies quickly triumphing over Germany. There was a great deal of patriotic fervour, which resulted in thousands of men volunteering to fight. In the event, the war was to last for over four years and it would change the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of Britain forever. On the 11th Hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War 1 officially ended when an agreement (known as an armistice) was signed by Germany and the Allies. This date is known as Armistice Day, and is still commemorated each year when people wear poppies to remember those who fought and died in conflicts around the world - the pretty red flowers were the only things that grew on the battlefields of Western Europe. Sadly, by the time World War 1 was over, more than 18 million people had been killed worldwide. It was hoped it would be the war to end all wars but this wasn't the case. Just 21 years later, World War 2 began. This concert, on the eve of the Centenary of the Armistice that ended World War 1, is the culmination of four years of commemoration concerts. It is a fitting tribute, not only to those who lost their lives in the Great War, but all those who have fought and died for our country over the past century. Supported by BBC Radio Lancashire, and in aid of the Royal British Legion, it brings together Musicians, Singers, Forces cadets and the Standard Bearers of the RBL from all over Lancashire - truly a ''people's'' concert. The concert will also be broadcast on Radio Lancashire on Sunday 11th November. It is an ideal opportunity to show our appreciation of those who defend us, or defended us, in this unique way.

On Saturday we remember those Lancashire Pals Regiments.

Tickets are £12.50 and can be purchased from

the Guild Hall booking office tel: 01772 804444.

All proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion.

Football On Tuesday, the U16 girls' football team were playing Archbishop Temple away in the English Schools’ Cup. The two teams have been very evenly matched at this age group since Year 7 and with many of the girls playing together at clubs outside of school, both teams always want to win bragging rights. Broughton have been the narrow victors the last couple of years, but it was not to be this time. Archbishop scored two early goals on the counter attack and despite Broughton dominating most of the play in the middle of the park, it was Archbishop who were more clinical in front of goal. Broughton brought the score back to 3-2, but were unfortunate not to receive a penalty when Daisy Mason was brought down in the 6 yard box having beaten the keeper. Archbishop then went down the other end and scored to ensure themselves of the win.

Wednesday saw the U14 girls’ football team in action with a home match against St Augustine's. St Augustine's started the better of the two teams, and it was clear they had quality across all three lines. With ten minutes to go, Broughton had come from 3-0 down to 3-2 and looked likely to equalise before full time. However, an unlucky deflection from one of the Broughton defenders gave St Augustine's a fourth goal and finished the game off. A great effort from all the Broughton girls.

Macy Darley, Cara Astley, Gail Harrison, Katy Redmond, Eve Burrow, Khadijah Issap, Leah Whitear, Eleanor Noblet, Sarah Reid, Phoebe Connolly,

Monae Hetherington-Smith, Scarlett Dawson On Thursday, the U16 girls’ football team were back in action in the Preston district league with a game against Ashton. Still frustrated with their loss on Tuesday, the girls started the game much more brightly and it was not long before Daisy Mason opened the scoring after a lovely pass from Georgia Hills. Broughton then completely dominated. They played some fantastic football and went into half time 5-0 up. With confidence high, Broughton continued to push for more goals second half, with some of the midfielders getting on the score sheet and leaving a final score of 10-0. A fantastic performance. Well done.

  • Root of the Week A root word is a word or part of a word which can form the basis of new words, through the addition of prefixes and suffixes. Understanding the meanings of common word roots can therefore help you work out the meanings of new words when you come across them. If pupils use the Root of the Week correctly in any form and label it, they will be awarded a point on ClassCharts.
