Dear Parents, It’s good to be back. Your sons and daughters are delighted, relieved and happy to return to school – and we are so pleased to see them all too. Attendance is 98.6% today which is superb in the circumstances. On behalf of all the staff, a massive ‘Thank You’ to all parents for your support, encouragement and active involvement with Remote Learning. Together we have ensured that every youngster has had the opportunity to continue their education; albeit not in the circumstances we all want. Still, we are now back. We are all looking forward to three enjoyable, successful and sociable weeks in school. As you are aware, there is a lot of talk and concern about ‘lost learning’ and ‘catch up’. We have a plan to help everyone with learning recovery, but for now we just want your sons/daughters to have some peer interaction, experience face to face teaching, eat a school lunch, walk/cycle to and from school and be as happy as possible. Members of staff will be welcoming, upbeat and genuinely pleased to see every single pupil. Today has been a great start. The second round of COVID testing begins today. Last week was such a success and thank you for your cooperation and support, especially with the return of the consent forms. If you are a parent of Year 8, 9 or 10, you deserve at least one ClassCharts point because we had 100% return of the forms. As you can imagine, the organisation of the testing has involved hours of meticulous planning and careful consideration of all the safety issues. Our Business Manager, Mrs Englishby, deserves considerable praise for the way she has coordinated the testing regime in such a short space of time. Special thanks to our team of volunteers - parents/relatives/friends. We could not have managed without you and such a high level of commitment mirrors the loyal, valued parental support we have at Broughton. A few reminders about this week:

UNIFORM Please ensure your sons/daughters wear their uniform correctly. In particular, plain black shoes, girls’ skirts the right knee length and outdoor coats black or blue.

MASKS As you are aware, the Government has made it clear that the use of face coverings

(in indoor areas where social distancing cannot be maintained) is strongly encouraged/expected. Your support with this will be much appreciated. We understand this will be reviewed at Easter.

EQUIPMENT We know you will provide all the basic stationery equipment, including numerous

pens. Please continue to remind your child to pack their bag the night before. Last Friday, we said ‘Goodbye’ to Paul Wallace, our Support Mentor who has been with us for the last 2 ½

years. As many of you will appreciate, Paul used his considerable experience to work alongside various pupils in/out of the classroom. He has been such a respected, valued member of our staff because of his wisdom, timely advice and genuine desire to ensure pupils make the right choices and make the most of their considerable opportunities. Mr Wallace is retiring (sounds good) and we wish him well and offer considerable thanks for his hard work, loyalty and dedication to our school.

As always, if you need to contact me about any issue, however trivial, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is [email protected]. Chris Morris, Headteacher

YEAR 9 OPTIONS 2021

If pupils log on to the Firefly dashboard, they will be able to see the logo for Year 9 Options 2021.

Using this link, they will be able to access a video introduction to the options process, subject specific video presentations and the options booklet.

This is the start of the process whereby Year 9 pupils choose the subjects they wish to study in Year 10 and Year 11. Pupils and parents are encouraged to access this information. During the week beginning 22nd March, Year 9 pupils will be asked to complete a preliminary survey outlining their preferred option choices. The information from this survey will then be used to create the Year 9 Options Form 2021, on which pupils will make their actual choices and submit by 13th May 2021.

Excellence in English Pupils in 11E3B were set the task to write an essay to appear in a broadsheet newspaper in which they explored their opinions on the following statement: ‘The cladding scandal reveals how Britain treats its poorest people. The residents of unsafe flats should not be made to pay to fix this housing crisis. ’

Excellence in English Year 9 are studying Shakespeare's tragedy 'Romeo & Juliet' this half term and they have been learning all about the historical context of the play. I asked 9ED to research Shakespeare's life and here are some examples of their excellent work. Well done, Year 9!

Strava Update A huge well done to all pupils and staff who have joined the Broughton High Strava group over lockdown. It has been fantastic to see so many different pupils out running, from beginners who have just started to our more seasoned runners who have showcased some excellent times. Regardless of ability, they have all benefitted from the many physical and mental benefits of exercising and being out in the fresh air. There is going to be a new Olympic-related Broughton High Strava challenge coming soon ... so please keep up the good work!

Baked Bean Challenge 2021 Year 9 pupils were tasked with a fun challenge using their creative skills, whilst only using basic ingredients that were accessible to most pupils - hence baked beans or

spaghetti hoops). There were some inventive entries as part of the challenge. The brief included food styling and how the product was photographed.

Congratulations to the following pupils who rose to the creative challenge.

Along with the Caught Reading challenge, our whole school community enjoyed a five-part murder mystery story throughout the day. It was lovely to know that, even though we weren’t in school, our staff/pupils could still share a story together. Tutor groups have also been organising themselves into teams throughout the week to take part in a Book Quiz. The winning team for each tutor group is named below.

There are still numerous activities to get involved in, as we are leaving the Library competitions open all next week. Pupils will be able to call into the Library to attempt winning ClassCharts points and prizes.

We cannot wait to welcome you all back into school and the Library.

Do you need any careers help or guidance?

Don't delay, book an appointment today!'

Please contact your schools Career Adviser or your Form Tutor

Not happy with your progress? Disappointed in your achievements? Lacking in motivation? Fed up with failing?

It’s all about FOCUS this month, whatever you focus your thoughts, words, attention and energy on will become your reality – so STOP and ask yourself do you need to CHANGE what you are thinking about, the words you are using (aloud and in your own head), where you are putting your attention and energy?

Career North’s top tip is to FOCUS on what it is that you want to achieve, you must think about it and visualise it as clearly as you can, tell yourself and others (repeatedly!) what it is you are going to achieve, do this often and FOCUS all of your energy and attention on imagining you have achieved your goals. What can you see, hear and feel when you have achieved your goals? Now hold on to that and remember how good that looks, sounds and feels at every opportunity!
