Dear Parents, Well, half term is almost over. That was a quick six weeks was it not!? As you are aware, this newsletter highlights the myriad achievements of countless pupils. Well, now it is your deserved turn to be recognised. On behalf of all staff, a massive Thank You’ for your active support, involvement and encouragement of your sons and daughters since this latest lockdown began in January. All parents deserve ClassCharts points, a Praise Postcard, a star ... even a waffle for ensuring that remote education throughout this lockdown has been such a relative success. Broughton parents have always been extensively involved in the education of their children, but this half term you have excelled yourselves. We are aware that many of you have been working from home at the same time as your sons/daughters. Not only has this put a strain on your internet, but it has also tested your powers of patience to the limit. However, you have done it. Congratulations! Communication between yourselves and various members of staff has been regular and two way. Any issues have been speedily resolved and the high quality of educational provision has continued. We have distilled all of your good practice into some ‘Parent Guidelines for Remote Learning’. ensure, as far as possible, that your son/daughter can access their online lessons in a quiet environment. support your child’s personal organisation so that they attend lessons punctually, in accordance with their normal timetable. encourage your son/daughter to participate fully in online lessons and to complete all the work set by the teachers. ensure that no element of an online lesson is recorded by your child or family members. please avoid making any inappropriate comments, or sharing any material, on social media that could identify your son/daughter, Broughton or members of staff. ensure that your son/daughter takes care of any equipment that they have been loaned and uses it only for the intended purposes. log on to Firefly as a parent as this allows you to see various documents, including your child’s timetable, as well as feedback from teachers and reviews/report. unexpected, unauthorised non-attendance at a lesson will result in a ClassCharts notification. This is not punitive, we want to keep you aware of your child’s participation in lessons. report any concerns that you have about any aspect of remote learning with relevant Progress Leader. Dear Parents, Well, half term is almost over. That was a quick six weeks was it not!? As you are aware, this newsletter highlights the myriad achievements of countless pupils. Well, now it is your

deserved turn to be recognised. On behalf of all staff, a massive ‘Thank You’ for your active support, involvement and encouragement of your sons and daughters since this latest lockdown began in January. All parents deserve ClassCharts points, a Praise Postcard, a star ... even a waffle for ensuring that remote education throughout this lockdown has been such a relative success.

Broughton parents have always been extensively involved in the education of their children, but this half term you have excelled yourselves. We are aware that

many of you have been working from home at the same time as your sons/daughters. Not only has this put a strain on your

internet, but it has also tested your powers of patience to the limit. However, you have done it. Congratulations!

Communication between yourselves and various members of staff has been regular and two way. Any issues have been speedily resolved and the high quality of educational provision has continued. We have distilled all of your good practice into some ‘Parent Guidelines for Remote Learning’. • ensure, as far as possible, that your son/daughter can access their online lessons in a quiet

environment.

• support your child’s personal organisation so that they attend lessons punctually, in accordance with their normal timetable.

• encourage your son/daughter to participate fully in online lessons and to complete all the work set by the teachers.

• ensure that no element of an online lesson is recorded by your child or family members.

• please avoid making any inappropriate comments, or sharing any material, on social media that could identify your son/daughter, Broughton or members of staff.

• ensure that your son/daughter takes care of any equipment that they have been loaned and uses it only for the intended purposes.

• log on to Firefly as a parent as this allows you to see various documents, including your child’s timetable, as well as feedback from teachers and reviews/report.

• unexpected, unauthorised non-attendance at a lesson will result in a ClassCharts notification. This is not punitive, we want to keep you aware of your child’s participation in lessons.

• report any concerns that you have about any aspect of remote learning with relevant Progress Leader.

Before we present these as part of a ‘Remote Education Policy’ at our next Governors’ meeting, please email me with any comments, amendments or improvements. We are always open to suggestions and good ideas.

Have a relaxing, enjoyable half term. You will be relieved and delighted to know that teachers will not be setting any homework. Everyone needs a break away from screens and computers. However, please remember that the country is still in lockdown and teenagers are not allowed to socialise with people outside their own household. Remote Education and school for children of vulnerable/critical workers starts again on Monday 22 February. We shall be teaching our normal lessons and following the usual timetable. On behalf of all the staff and governors, have a pleasant, relaxing and safe week. As always, if you need to contact me about any issue, however trivial, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is [email protected]. Chris Morris, Headteacher

Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 9th February

This year's theme is:

An internet we trust: exploring reliability in the online world

More so now than ever, we need to ensure that our children understand how to stay safe online and where to go for help if something is worrying them. There are lots of resources for parents and carers on the UK Safer Internet Centre. You can find them by following the link below. The pack includes activities, conversation starters and information to help parents and carers talk to their children about how navigate the issue of reliability of information online in a safe, responsible and engaging way. I am a parent or carer | Safer Internet Centre On Tuesday, all pupils will be sent a link to a virtual assembly produced by the UK Safer Internet Centre specifically written for this year's theme. Take care. Mrs Boardman

Children’s Mental Health Week This week we have celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week both in school and at home. Pupils have had access to an assembly about the theme ‘Express Yourself’, which is the focus of this year’s national week. They have been reminded to look after themselves and each other and to keep in touch during this challenging time. Pupils have also been encouraged to wear something that makes them happy during their lockdown learning at home. Pupils of key workers in school have enjoyed a non-uniform day too. We have been delighted with the photos that pupils and teachers have sent in of themselves wearing something related to what makes them happy. We hope you enjoy looking at these. If you need any support or advice on wellbeing or mental health, please look on the school website. There you will find an area dedicated to “Where to go for help”. Please contact school for advice and support if needed. Take care. Mrs Higham

Excellence in English In their weekly vocabulary study, Year 7 recently discussed the word 'controversy'. They made a list of controversial topics, and then pupils each chose one topic that was important to them and wrote a letter to the Editor about it.

The letters were heartfelt, dignified and well argued. Broughton is producing a generation of young people who feel strongly about things that matter. We wish we could have printed all of the letters!

Miss Winter

Dear Editor, I am writing to express my views of widespread Black Lives Matter which developed gargantuan growth in 2020, following the murder of an innocent man George Floyd. Although the movement started in 2012, some citizens only recently learned of and joined the movement. No matter when you learnt of the movement, it is essential you show support any way you can; whether you sign a petition, go to march or share information on social media. It is obvious all lives should have equal value therefore, until black lives matter are equal to white lives there will exist a continued injustice. We must stand together in support of our fellow citizens and guarantee the society we leave behind is one of equality and unity. I do hope your beloved readers take the time to consider my words and help create a powerful impact toward the lives of so many. Yours faithfully, Ajay Singh

Definition = Controversy occurs when an issue divides people and causes a heated debate. 1. Animal testing 2. Politics 3. Diet 4. Lockdown 5. Offensive words 6. Drug testing 7. Donald Trump and Joe Biden 8. BLM 9. Brexit 10. Global warming

Dear Editor, I am writing to express my feelings about global warming. I am distressed about this very important subject. I understand that some people feel differently about this and they believe that it is a subject that can be fixed later, but I feel that this should be thought about and that something should be done about this global pandemic. How can people carry on with their usual jobs while animals are becoming extinct and our earth is crumbling? It’s obvious that we have to act now. The dangers of this disaster are obvious. I hope this letter will make an impact thank you. Sofia Leeming

Dear Editor, I am writing to inform you about the shocking sexism that still happens in modern workplace. For every £1 a man gets a woman gets 85p and this shocks me to the core. I think it is dangerous how prehistoric we still are in the way women are treated. We are sexually abused in the workplaces just for being female. Our oppressors are men and how we don’t have any women who are the best at jobs because men won’t let us be. It hurts me to watch all this take place in my lifetime. I think people need to be educated about this and we need to be. I would like to see a change. We need more women in powerful positions. Please help me make a difference.

It has been great to see the different runs everyone has been doing, and so far the club has covered a total distance of 152 km. Rachel Mead has run the furthest distance of all our members, covering a whopping 11km in one run! Owen Price was not far behind with 10.46km, and an impressive average pace of 4.50/km. Mr Peterson didn't want to feel left out and completed his first ever 10k this week ... unfortunately this is twice as far as he has moved before, and he hasn't been able to move since! Keep up the good work everyone.

Excellence in Design Technology Oliver Williams, Year 10, continues to show excellent engagement, high quality research and hard work. He made a fantastic effort with our mock NEA work.

Crafts from Home

I am delighted that pupils have been busy ‘getting crafty’ and undertaking projects at home. Sophie Horner (7S) sent me some photographs of the mandala stones that she has made. Sophie said, “Last year during lockdown I bought a mandala tool kit from Amazon. I looked at some designs on the internet and began to make my own stones. During the first lockdown I made them for my family and friends. More recently I made some to sell at my former primary school’s Christmas craft fair to raise money for their PTA. The stones were very popular and they sold out. It is very relaxing and I really enjoy making them as gifts for people and I am happy to make them to raise funds for different things. I really enjoy crafts and making new things. I hope you like them.”

Amelia Brome (9B) sent me a photograph of her work. Amelia made a sculpture based on an albino octopus.

I look forward to receiving more examples of the craft projects and creative hobbies that our pupils have started during this lockdown.
