On behalf of our staff, I welcome everyone to the new school year and hope that everyone had a good break and managed to spend some quality family time together. We are looking forward to the term ahead. It is great to see the children arrive back at school happy and ready to get into their learning. Thank you to Father Doug for offering a special blessing to our students, staff and parents this morning. There is a lot going on both in and out of the classroom this term so we encourage you to keep a close eye on key dates for the term and read all newsletters that are sent home. We welcome Mrs Anne-Marie Cassidy to our staff this year. Mrs Cassidy will be providing release in several classrooms this year as well as teaching English to some of our students. We are delighted to have Mrs Cassidy join our staff this year. Swimming begins this week and will continue throughout the term. This will take place every Friday for students in Years 1-6 and every Thursday for students in Years 7 & 8. Please see the syndicate newsletters for more information about school swimming and make sure the children bring their swimming gear each week. Please ensure that your child has a school sun hat with them at all times. We enforce a “no hat no play policy” in Terms 1 and 4. This means that children without a hat spend their lunchtime in the shaded area outside the office. This is to help protect our children from the risk of skin cancer. We ask that you also put sunblock on your children before they come to school. We only have a limited supply of sun block at school. We also love to see the children wearing their uniform with pride. This includes all students wearing black shoes or sandals only. We will be following up on students who are not wearing the correct school uniform. The full uniform requirements are available on our school website under the Parent Information tab. All uniform enquiries need to be directed to the school office. We ask that everyone who uses the drop off and pick up parking spaces at the front of the chalet in Nicholson Road please remain with their car and do not leave it parked there unattended. We have only a small space available and it works well when everyone is courteous of others and uses it as intended before and after school. There are usually parking spaces further along Nicholson Road, Everest Street and Ganges Road before and after school. We invite you to our Meet the Teacher Evening on Tuesday 8

th February at 6pm.

This is an opportunity to meet the staff in each syndicate and to hear about each syndicate’s programme and expectations. We will begin in the library with a brief overview of each area of the school and then you will have the opportunity to visit your child’s class and meet your child’s teacher. The annual school picnic is on Friday 10

th February so mark this date in your diary. This is always a fun community-

building day and is a great way to get our year off to a good start. As we are going to be at the beach and swimming at the Eastbourne Pool, we need to obtain permission from you for your child to attend. Please email the office or return the slip which is included in this newsletter. Everyone is welcome to join us for this day. Wednesday 15

th February we will be holding a beginning of year Mass at St Benedict’s Church at 9.15am where we

come together as a community to celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Everyone is welcome to join us for this Mass.

During the holiday break we had the exterior of the school painted. We are delighted with the way the school looks and look forward to the final stages of the work being completed over the next couple of weeks.

In January our solar panels generated 552 kWh of solar energy. This is 28% of out total power consumption for January. In 2016 our solar panels generated 5357kWh of energy in total. Our school page can be viewed by clicking on the St Benedict’s School Schoolgen link: http://schoolgen.co.nz/schoolgen-schools/st-benedicts-school.
