Number 1 5 February 2020

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the School, I welcome our 570 students, new and

connuing, to Maiden Gully Primary School for 2020. I am

pleased to report that our twenty-six classrooms appeared calm

and well organised on my visits today and since we arrived back.

Our teachers were well organised following the many hours in-

volved in relocang to new rooms and preparing for the return

of students. Well done to all involved!

Our well wishes are with Mrs Bri+ Daffy and Mr Travis Pool who

recently finished their me with us. Mrs Daffy is due to have her

first baby in the coming weeks and we know that she will be an

outstanding mum. Mrs Daffy is a most organised teacher and I

am confident that she will carry out these qualies into mother-

hood. She will be missed and we wish her and husband Josh all

the best.

Mr Pool commenced a new role at our Regional Office over the

holiday period. Travis is working with helping other schools im-

prove their results in Literacy for the next two years. Mr Stacy

Fiske has been appointed as Mr Pool’s replacement and brings

with him a wealth of teaching experience and curriculum

knowledge to our school.

Following a number of new appointments late last year I am also

Lauren Coghill (Grade 2), Miss Chelsea Goulden (Grade 2) Miss

Karlee O’Donnell (Grade 1), Miss Ivy Yuan (Chinese), Mrs Vicki

Redwood (Music / Drama), Mrs Carli Turner and Mrs Annie

James to our school.

teams. 2020 will also deliver class sizes of an average 21.9 stu-

dents across our school.

This year students will experience specialist teachers in the areas

of Chinese, Drama / Music, Visual Arts and Physical Educaon.

Over the coming weeks, I will be asking classroom teachers, if

they have not done so already, to ensure that parents are con-

nected through the use of the classroom Dojo. When used ap-

propriately, this will ensure that there are many opportunies

for communicaon between home and school. I am expecng

that teachers will use and check this daily. I trust that parents

will do the same and will be encouraged to communicate with

teachers in this manner when they are unable to pop-in.

Families are asked to ensure that all medical records of students

and emergency contact details of families including mobile

phone and residenal records are kept up to date.

Finally, it was excing to see our students arriving to school on

me, in uniform and happy to be returning to school. All stu-

dents are reminded as part of our Sun Smart policy that they are

expected to wear a school hat during Terms 1 and 4.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key di-

educaon that the school provides for its students.

For 2020, school council elecons must be completed by March 31st.

STUDENT NETBOOK COMPUTERS

Over the holiday break we took delivery of our new net-

book computers. The computers have been imaged and

are ready for use.

This year the cost of providing netbooks to our students

will exceed $30.000.00 aOer the annual parent contribu-

on is deducted. The expectaon is that all children in

Years 3-6 will parcipate in the program. The cost to fam-

ilies this year will be a $150.00 per student for students in

Years 3, 5 and 6 and $175.00 for students in Year 4. (The

students in Year 4 receive a new model device with higher

specificaons)

Earlier this week, families received a user agreement and

once signed and netbooks paid for, they will be given out

to the students.. All students in grades 3 to 6 are ex-

pected to pay for these prior to Friday 8th March. These

details were sent to families also this week and will allow

families to retain the device at the end of the leasing peri-

od. Collecon details will be include in next week’s news-

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNCIL AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within state-wide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

WHO IS ON THE SCHOOL COUNCIL?

For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:

A mandated elected Parent category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not en-gaged in work at the school.

A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

WHY IS PARENT MEMBERSHIP SO IMPORTANT?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help inform and shape the direc-tion of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

DO I NEED SPECIAL EXPERIENCE TO BE ON SCHOOL COUNCIL?

Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role, councillors may need to develop skills and ac-quire knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

HOW CAN YOU BECOME INVOLVED?

The most obvious way is to vote in the school council elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.

In view of this, you might seriously consider

standing for election as a member of the school council

encouraging another person to stand for election.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO STAND FOR ELECTION?

The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister.

If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate your-self in the Parent category.

DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work, are eligible to nominate for parent membership of the school council at that school.

Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will re-ceive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.

Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.

REMEMBER

Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do

Consider standing for election to school council this year

Be sure to vote in the elections.

Please feel free to contact me for further informaon.

Oshcare News

Welcome to Before and AOer School Care at Maiden Gully

Primary School for 2020.

We have plenty of vacancies for any new families that might

be thinking of using OSHCare. We welcome you to come

and talk to the staff at anyme.

I have rolled the a+endance roll over from last year. If noth-

ing has changed then there is no need to come and see me.

If you require addional or changed days please contact

myself or the staff in the school office.

We will be picking up all new preps from their classrooms in

the aOernoon that will be going to AOer School Care, and in

the morning we will be taking all the new preps to their new

classrooms if they are in Before School Care. This rule will

apply unl they are confident enough to do it for them-

selves (end of Feb).

All children will need a hat when they come to OSHCare. A

spare hat in their bag is a great idea. If your child doesn’t

have a hat, then they will have to stay inside to play.

Before School Care operates from 6.45am to 8.45am and

AOer School Care from 3.30pm to 6.00pm.

Middle Mutterings

Welcome back to the school year for 2020!

We are super excited to be back into the swing of things

with our new grades… but with that, comes all the start-of-

the-year paperwork! Can we get a woohoo? …Anyone? J

Over the next couple of weeks, please keep an eye out for

notes and permission forms coming home (including Net-

books, Mobile Devices and PG Movies, as well as our Term

Overview and Parent Exchange Info) and return any notes

as soon as possible.

BookClub is also coming home, which is a great segue into

one of our focuses for the year: READING! Reading exercis-

es our brain, it’s like taking your brain to the gym! Reading

is a more complex task for the human brain than watching

TV, for example. Reading strengthens brains connecons

and builds NEW connecons. These connecons make all

learning easier. Our focus this year will be “Every Child.

Every Day.” More on this to come!

Monday, February 10th is our Meet the Teacher and Com-

munity BBQ Night, from 5:30pm to 7pm. We’ll all be in our

rooms unl 6pm, when the delicious smells waOing from

the BBQ will draw us all out to the Netball Courts. We’d

love to see as many parents as we can for a great communi-

ty night.

Please make sure your child has their school hat and a drink

bo+le filled with water at school every day, as we are in for

a few hot days this week and beyond.

If you have any quesons or concerns, please Dojo your

class teacher.

Have a cracking week!

READING – EVERY CHILD, EVERY NIGHT

At Maiden Gully, we expect all children to read a minimum of 5 nights each week. They are to fill in their Reading Diaries,

which is to be signed by parents.

The Home Reading Program is a vital part of the home-school partnership and helps your child to improve fluency and con-

fidence in reading. Home readers and goals are generally designed to be slightly easier than the work completed in class to

enable your child to pracse the following:

reading words and books they know,

using phrasing and fluency,

monitoring and rereading for comprehension and accuracy,

gaining confidence in their reading ability through experiencing success and enjoyment.

Your role is to:-

• Encourage children to find 20 or more minutes of quiet me to read (30mins by Grade 6).

• Encourage them to read the blurb of the story when choosing a book

• Encourage them to read as they would speak (with fluency and expression)

• Talk to your child and about the book

• Make predicons about what the book might be about or how the story might end

• Work to or pracce your child’s literacy learning goals

• Encourage your child to borrow from the library

Please ensure their reading book and diary is returned daily to class even if they have not completed it. NOTE: It is not ex-

pected that chapter or lengthy books are completed in one night!

Partnerships between the student, home and school will give your child the best opportunity to achieve to the best of their

abilies.

If at any me you wish to discuss your child’s reading progress, please make an appointment with the class teacher.

Thank you, and please enjoy the stories that you read together.
