Parent Information Evening In the last newsletter I mentioned this upcoming parent evening:
We are pleased to invite you to a parent information evening on
Tuesday 11th April 7-8.30pm in our school hall. This is the start of our
consultation around future focused education and the implications for
our learners in school. This will help inform our building developments
here at Brooklyn. Here is an overview of the evening and I have
included a bio of the presenter. Mark Osborne is a really interesting
speaker and he is an expert in this area. I urge you to attend.
It is not too late to R.S.V.P. by emailing [email protected],
please use Mark Osborne as the subject heading. For those of you who are
unable to make it, we are hoping to video his presentation and will have this
available on our school website.
Future-focused Education
Our schools are currently going through significant levels of change. Developments in technology,
the world of work and demographics mean that what schools were doing even as recently as 10
years ago no longer meets the needs of our students. Thankfully, our growing knowledge of
neuroscience and effective teaching and learning practice means we have a better idea of how
to meet every learners' needs. This talk will explore the ways in which schools are ensuring learners
are prepared for 'their future; not our past'.
Bio- Mark Osborne is Director of Leading Learning Ltd and has been a teacher,
school leader and consultant for more than 20 years. He works nationally and
internationally on future-focused education, innovative learning environments
and educational leadership, helping schools build great places to learn and
the capability to make the most of those spaces. Mark is also a doctoral
researcher at the University of Melbourne currently exploring change leadership
in innovative learning environments.
Tonight we are holding our first 2017 Fair Meeting. You
are most welcome to come along. The meeting starts
at 7.30pm in the school staffroom. We are hoping to
have a fair in term 4 of this year.
Tapu Te Ranga
Last week the Moa and Takahe syndicates visited the Island Bay Marae-Tapu Te Ranga. The Moa
syndicate stayed the night and put down a hangi the following morning. The Takahe syndicate
were welcomed on the Marae by the Moa (tangaga whenua) and enjoyed a delicious hangi.
We would like to thank Matthew Breach for his leadership and organisation for this occasion. The
kai was scrumptious. Here is an update from Room 10. They have updated the class website with
some pictures from the marae visit last week. The students had a go at writing with the twitter style
limitation of 140 characters about the trip. Sleepless nights seems to be a bit of a theme – We are
sure you noticed that when the Moa students got home.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who was able to help out on the trip, and you should all be really
proud of your kids. They were a fabulous bunch to take away.
Enjoy the pictures and writing. http://room10brooklyn.weebly.com/
Staff Update
We would like to wish Jaimee Perrett all the best as she leaves us next Thursday and heads off on

Next term Margaret Zlatkov will be opening the new entrant class in Room 2. She will be on
Associate Principal release on a Wednesday. Kirsty Parun is releasing Margaret.
New Students This week we extend a warm Brooklyn welcome to Year 2 student Ana-Mei Taumata and her

Library News Term One
As always the library is a popular and well-used area of the school. It is well-resourced and up-to-date with all the new and popular books. Lunchtimes are especially busy and there are often up to 50 children enjoying reading, playing games, drawing or just chatting.
Luckily we enjoy the help of student librarians to issue, return and shelve the books. They are all keen and reliable helpers. As part of their duties they are each responsible for a particular area of the non-fiction collection - shelving and maintaining the books in their correct Dewey order, identifying books needing repairs and helping younger students to find books.
Our wonderful 2017 School Librarians
Library Sessions
Reading for pleasure is the key to lifelong reading. Schools with a reading culture value, model and talk about reading for pleasure. They are places where staff and students read and are encouraged to read at school and at home. Each class up to Year 6 has five library literacy sessions per term. The Year 7/8 classes have regular slots on Wednesdays. Aim: to create readers
How: Provide information, resources and ideas to aid students’ reading for pleasure.
Create a reading culture at Brooklyn School where reading is supported, role modelled and encouraged. Why? Fluent and reflective reading deepens language skills, and engages students’ imagination enabling independent learning. Kids Lit Quiz
Once again we have two teams of senior students competing in the Kids Lit Quiz. This is a fun, interactive literary event where the teams answer 100 varied book-related questions. The winning team goes on to a NZ final and from there a world final. The students chosen this year are Sarah Walker, Jessie Davidson, Louis Case, Ben Ballantyne, Gabby Pointon-Gyde, Maddy Jobson, Anna Reilly, Eleni Prebble and Sophie Lee (Reserve).

An Awfully Big Adventure This ridiculously clever, funny and highly entertaining show highlights the absurdity of war, exploring WWI and its impact on New Zealanders. Amongst the pythonesque absurdity and theatrical performance comes a show that explore the story of two young men; one a keen enlister and the other a conscientious objector meeting on Flanders Fields. Written by Leo Gene Peters for families (due to content we recommend over age 7).
