Highvale SC 2019 Budget
The 2019 budget will soon be presented to council for approval. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the budget working party and Mrs Turner in particular for getting all the information together. A strong focus of our budget will be reserving funds for later use to finish off all those small items our building program.
VCE Exams
The VCE Examinations are continuing and from my observations our students are handling the pressure very well. I certainly look forward to some excellent results. I would like to wish all students all the very best of luck and encourage them to use their time responsibly in revision and study.
2019 Year 7 Orientation Day
The 2019 Year 7 Orientation Day is Tuesday 11 December. We are delighted that there will be a larger than normal year 7 cohort which reflects the confidence of our community in Highvale. To make the Orientation Day more engaging for students, our future Year 7 students participated the PAT maths and English testing last weekend. I would like to thank all of our new parents and students for their enthusiasm and attendance. The results of the testing will be used by teachers to plan targeted lessons as well as enable the school to allocate students to accelerated classes.
End of Year Program
Arrangements for the Head Start and Junior School end of year program are currently being finalised. I would like to thank Mr Galle, Mrs Carr and Ms Bate for all of their work in bringing these very important initiatives together.
Course Interviews
Students in Year 8 & 9 will soon be undertaking their course confirmation for 2019. If there are any issues with times that have now been booked online, please contact Mr Mitchell on 98035144.
School Master planning update
Our new Science block is finally coming into shape. The new permanent whiteboards are currently being installed and the myriad of boxed resources are being sorted and stored. Our year 12’s have appreciated the opportunity to study in the S block breakout space before their exams. Home economics and Art have settled in to R block portables. I understand that there has been some creative use of the school BBQs.
The junior quadrangle is expected to have synthetic turf installed next week and the last few seating benches finished off.
I would like to give a big thank you to all students and staff for putting up with the disruptions and construction noise. The expected completion date for the completion of Stage 2 is 26 March 2019. I expect that there may be some additional days after that, it is all weather dependant.
Presentation night
Presentation night will be Monday 17 December at 1330 Conference Centre, 1330 Ferntree Gully Road Wantirna. I encourage all parents and students to make sure that this night is set aside so you can attend the 2018 celebration of student excellence.

Term 4 Sport Report
With interschool sport coming to an end in Term 3 it is always great to see Highvale students still participating in Term 4 at region and state competitions. On Monday 22nd October, Jakeb Pearson, Year 11 and Talia Allen, Year 8 competed at the State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Talia placed 3rd in the 800m final and Jakeb placed 3rd in the 400m final. Two bronze medals were a fantastic achievement for the day!
Year 7 Regional Girls Volleyball
On the 29th of October, nine girls from year 7 participated in regionals for Volleyball after winning their first volleyball outing in March. The people who participated were Sarah Williams, Alysandra Abdallah, Naomi Moorjee, Ava Sadler, Tayla Hollins, Laila Pakzad, Charlotte Pearson, Elisha Garner and Daniella Currenti who were coached by Miss Cleeland. For the 8 months between our first tournament and regionals, we practiced for approximately 2 and a half months which helped with our drastic improvement.
Kelsey Dwyer Director of Sport
Eventually the day came, and we were all excited. When we got there, we saw all the other teams and were intimidated but we grabbed a volleyball and practiced before our first game against Norwood, we only lost by 4 points. It was a bit disappointing, but it pushed us to try harder for our next game. For the next 40 minutes we rehearsed our serves because that was the main thing that had let us down. Finally, it was time for our second game that was against Monbulk. We finished off with a sudden death because both teams had already won one set each. Luckily, we won another set which meant that we had won the whole game. Our digs weren’t the best in that game, so we used and hour to practice our digs, backing each other up and passing to each other.
At last, our finale game was against East Doncaster and was very similar to our second. Again, both teams had won two sets and one of us had to win another. We ended up winning that whole game, meaning we lost one and won two. Unfortunately, we came second because Norwood won all three of their games, but we were still proud that we came second, especially since the last time we played another team was in March.

JUNIOR MUSICIAN’S CONCERT
Last night, the Junior Musician’s Concert was held in the College Theatre. 147 musicians performed to a full house and presented an engaging, wide range of music numbers from Grieg to Coldplay.
The evening commenced with an a sensational rendition of ‘Clocks’ from the Massed Strings group and ended with a powerful performance of ‘Ice Mountain’ by the String Orchestra. The Rhythm Riders produced a ‘Battle of the Drums’, while the Harmonix Choir used body percussion to create the dramatic effect of a storm. The Concert Band surprised their audience with a plethora of special effects for their ‘Shoo Fly Rock, while the Junior Stage Band brought a touch of Jazz to the show. Some very talented soloists and small ensemble performances, added to the enjoyment of the evening.
Throughout the concert, short videos of each major junior ensemble rehearsal were played to the audience, in order to give parents an idea of the work that students and staff do in weekly rehearsals. The videos were produced and edited by Josh Tran (year 11 student).
A most enjoyable evening due to the high standard of performances from our youngest musicians and the dedication of our music staff. Mrs. Govan, Mr. McGuffie, Mrs. O’Brien, Mrs. Gaudion, Mr. Milosevic, Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Lam and Mrs. Chew.
A big thank you also to Ms. Bate( Stage Manager), Mr. Mitchell (Audio) and Mr. Kingston (Visual Media) for the ‘behind the scenes’ support for the concert.

INSTRUMENTAL HIRE AND TUITION CONTINUATION FOR 2019
All parents of instrumental music students will be sent an email in the next week, regarding hire and tuition arrangements for instrumental music in 2019. It is important that parents read through this material and return the survey indicating their intentions for their child’s involvement in the program next year. If students are wishing to keep their hired instruments over the holidays and continue hiring in 2019, full payment of the hire fee must be paid. (Details in the email document)
Students discontinuing hire in 2019, should return their hire instrument to the music office by at their last instrumental music lesson in early December.
PRIVATE LESSONS 2019:- In 2019, private lessons will again being offered to instrumental music students. Private lessons are recommended for students undertaking VCE Music Performance studies or high level AMEB examinations, in their chosen instrument. Please note that access to private lessons is dependent on the availability of instrumental staff.
Parents interested in private lessons for their child should also indicate this on the emailed survey.
