Kindergarten to Year 12 Issue No: 8 19th March, 2015
BROKEN BAY It is an exciting week for the Stage 3 students at Molong Central who departed for Broken Bay on Monday. The
students and staff met at 4 am to catch a coach to Bathurst where they then boarded a train. These types of
excursions allow students to interact with their peers and teachers away from the normal conventions of
school. Students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in an unfamiliar
environment. It is a time that students look back on and memories that can last a lifetime are created. It also
allows the development of independence as many students have their first opportunity to stay overnight away
from home. I am looking forward to hearing of the many adventures and challenges the students will
experience.
AFTER
SRC ASSEMBLY
The SRC held their first assembly last week. This assembly was initiated by the students and was an
opportunity for the SRC to share their ideas with the rest of the student body. The SRC are keen to hold an
assembly each term to inform the student body of upcoming events and issues that may impact on students. I
am pleased to say that the assembly was a success.
UNIVERSITY ROADSHOW Molong Central’s Year 12 students attended the University Roadshow held in Orange last Thursday. The Roadshow allows students from regional areas an opportunity to consider university as a post school option. Several university representatives presented an insight into university life and the courses that are available. The students then had an opportunity to ask questions. Thanks to Mr Taylor for organising our students’ attendance at this worthwhile day. I am sure that it opened up ideas for discussion that will be followed up as the Year 12 students consider their future. Mrs Michelle Barrett Principal
OUT & ABOUT I took the time on Monday morning to step into several classes in both the Secondary and the Primary. In 1 Barrington I watched literacy groups participate in several activities that promoted the development of literacy skills. There were several things that stood out. Firstly the parent helpers who allow the formation of an effective learning environment for the class teacher to give individualised instruction, secondly the level of engagement the students displayed at each station and finally how responsive the students were when I asked them about the activities that they were involved in. As I moved around the Secondary I also noticed the opportunity the teachers have to give students individualised attention. This attention is only possible because the rest of the class is actively involved in learning and focussed on the task in front of them. I have highlighted the fact that an excellent learning environment exists at Molong Central and as I walked around the Key Learning Areas of the Secondary I was not disappointed. From a lesson on sports coaching to a class completing a biology assessment and a chemistry experiment in the room next door it was all systems go on a Monday morning at Molong Central. In every room students were actively involved in the learning.
WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE & CRAZY HAIR DAY Mercades Oste and Sharna
Campbell took part in the
World‘s Greatest Shave with both
girls raising substantial amounts
of money both at school and in
the wider community to support
the Leukaemia Foundation. I
discussed with both girls the
reasons why they did this and
they each had an individual story
about someone who had been
close to them who needed to
undergo treatment for Cancer.

YR 8 MATHS STUDY MOBILE PHONE PLANS In the early stages of Year 8, Mathematics classes study the topic of Data Collection and Representation. In this topic they look at the ways in which data and statistics are used in our society. This includes looking at the different ways in which data is presented in the media and the community in order to ensure that they are well informed citizens who are not vulnerable to the manipulation of data and information by commercial or political interests. As a part of this topic, students in the 8 Maths 1 class have undertaken a special research program with Mrs Pottie which involves studying how Mobile Phone Plans work. This has included analysing and comparing payment programs, costs and benefits of different types of plans and ways in which consumers may be misled by the information provided. Mrs Pottie said “students researched phone plans, finding hidden facts, surveying friends and family on mobile phone usage. Students then present their findings and research to the class once they have completed this task. Some of them found it challenging, but I think it was very rewarding.” Joshua Dowler happily outlined what they had done in class including the fact that they “…used the data and surveys to work out the best mobile plan for people”. Nathan Rapley concluded that this task had confirmed that he “…will not get a mobile phone – the plans are all too dear!” Congratulations to the students of 8 Maths 1 on their hard work in this topic and thankyou to Mrs Pottie for designing this interesting program which has allowed our students to get an understanding of another application of Mathematics in the real-world.

YEAR 10 TEXTILES On Wednesday 11th of March, Year 10 Textiles had the opportunity to be involved in a Techniques Day delivered by the S&S Textile and Art representative, Annette Dixon. The Techniques Day focussed on the elements and principles of design. We, as students were actively involved in the 12 methods of embellishing cloth and paper. To commence the day we tie dyed a silk scarf within 12 minutes. The favourite techniques were heating Angelina fibre to create a bonded fabric, solar printing, tie dyeing, devour paste and gelli plate printing. These techniques will be invaluable when creating our Textile Art project in Term 1 and 2. Year 10 Textiles and Mrs Corinth.

AEROSOL CANS I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and students that MCS is an aerosol free zone. This means that students will need to use roll on deodorant instead of the aerosol style spray deodorant. This is not a new rule at the school; it has been this way for many years. I have asked staff to act if they see an aerosol can in a student’s possession. They will confiscate the can of deodorant and issue a full demerit. This may sound harsh, but all students have been warned of the consequences and this stance has been taken by the school out of health concerns. Aerosol spray is a major trigger of asthma amongst teenagers and we are certainly striving to minimise the number of asthma attacks which occur within school. Another concern which is reported to be occurring within the wider community is the use of aerosol cans by teenagers in the practice of sniffing. This practice can have disastrous results for those involved, with deaths being reported each year among teenagers. We would like the support of parents by insisting that aerosols are not to come onto school grounds and that roll on deodorant is viewed as the sensible alternative.

Case of Discovery Visit On Tuesday, students in Years 3-6 had a visit from ‘A
Case of Discovery’, where they got to become
Forensic Scientists. They were given a crime scene
with clues and learnt how to be detectives. The
students then had to explore the clues left behind by
the suspects to work out who committed the crime.
Students had to carry out coin rubbings, finger print
testing, read ultra-blue invisible ink, test for poisons,
construct DNA models and observe evidence under
the microscope. The also had to piece together the
clues to be able to open the victim’s safe.
The students had a fantastic time and even managed
to solve the crime! Well done everyone.
Some comments from students were: “The Case of Discovery show was cool. We got to try and solve a case. We also had to try and find fingerprints. I think it is good for kids to try and learn about trying to discover things.” Ryan 5/6 Gibraltor
The Discovery show was a fun and interesting way to learn and it can strengthen a child’s problem solving capability. It could be a great job opportunity.” Charlotte 5/6 Gibraltor
“We really enjoyed the case of discovery. Emily – My favourite activity was fingerprinting. Cooper – My favourite bit of Case of Discovery was the
invisible ink with the ultraviolet light.”
Western Swimming Last Friday, two of our students represented our
area at Western Region Swimming held in Dubbo.
Lacey Brown and Phillip Pike qualified for the
50m Freestyle. Lacey swam first in the 8years
Girls and achieved a personal best time. Phillip
swam in the 13 Yrs Boys and also achieved a
personal best time, taking two seconds off his
District swim time.
Although not fast enough on the day to make it
through to the State Carnival, both swimmers
agreed it was a great experience and getting a PB
was the icing on the cake!
Well done, a wonderful achievement by both
students!

The Fair has been a popular spot to visit over the past eight days and the Library staff plus our enthusiastic Year 11 Monitors have been kept very busy each day. Not only have we had many visitors to the Fair but many excited students scouring the playground for knights and princesses as well as guessing how many mints it would take to freshen a dragon’s breath. The winners of the colouring competition, the Treasure Hunt & the Guessing competition will be published in the newsletter next week. Orders have been placed so some students will receive the books they have paid for this week. Unfortunately I am unable to re-order posters or stationery items this year. It has been pleasing to receive so many Premier’s Reading Challenge permission notes. I would appreciate their prompt return so that I can activate the K-2 student records. There will be opportunities for students in Years 3-6 to record their book choices on the PRC website during Library lessons. Explore your imagination, read a book! Mrs Hall
